Warnings and Cautions
AC Power
Warning: Risk of electrical shock. Use caution when removing the
library’s cover. Spectra Logic recommends turning off the power
to the library before removing the cover.
Battery
Warning: There is a risk of explosion if the LCM battery is replaced by an
incorrect type. Be sure to use the correct battery type and
dispose of used batteries according to the instructions.
Library Placement
Caution: Do not place the library anywhere where you must place any
equipment (e.g., a monitor or a laptop computer) directly on
top of the library. The library cover is not designed to hold
weight.
Media
Caution: Use only the data cartridges approved for use in the particular
drives installed in your library. Improper data cartridges will
result in damage to the drives, library, and cartridges.
Shipping
Caution: Remove all TeraPack magazines before shipping the library. Use
the specialized TeraPack magazine packaging to ship TeraPack
magazines separately.

1 Introduction
About This Guide
This guide describes the configuration and use of the Spectra®T50 library, including
troubleshooting information.
Intended Audience
This guide addresses users of the Spectra T50 library. This guide assumes a familiarity
with backup systems, SCSI, Fibre Channel, and iSCSI connectivity, and technical tasks
such as configuring operating systems and installing drivers.

Figure 1-1 shows the components of the Spectra T50 library that are important in
configuring and using the library.

Available Configurations
Tape Drives The Spectra T50 library is available in a variety of drive configurations.
Drive Type The Spectra T50 library holds one or two full-height LTO-3 or LTO-4 tape
drives, or it holds one to four half-height LTO-2 tape drives.
Drive Connectivity The full-height drives in the Spectra T50 library are available with
SCSI, Fibre Channel, or iSCSI configuration; the half-height drives are SCSI only.
Cartridge Slots The Spectra T50 library can be configured with 10 to 50 tape cartridge
slots. These slots are built in removable containers called TeraPack magazines.
TeraPack Magazines Each TeraPack magazine contains five slots (see the picture
shown below).
The library holds a minimum of two and up to a maximum of ten TeraPack
magazines. The TeraPack magazines move around the inside of the library on a
carousel of specially designed TeraPack carriers.
See the table below for the slot counts provided in each available TeraPack
configuration.
Chambers Slots in the library are divided into groups of five (for each TeraPack
magazine). On the LC, each TeraPack magazine is referred to as a chamber.
Adding Capacity Additional slots (in groups of five) can be added at any time using
CoD, the library’s capacity-on-demand feature. Simply use Spectra Logic’s Web site
to purchase a CoD option key and the appropriate number of TeraPack magazines.
When they are shipped to you, simply type the CoD option key into the LC and
import the TeraPack magazine(s). For more information on option keys, refer to
Enabling Options on page 25.

Air Filter The Spectra T50 library lets you install an optional air filter, as shown in
Figure 1-2.
To purchase air filters, contact your sales representative (see Contacting Spectra Logic
Sales on page 126).

Library Management
Library management in the Spectra T50 library provides maximum configurability and
ease of use. To take full advantage of the library’s versatility, read the following
overview of the library’s management features.
Library Controller
On the front of the library, the
Library Controller (LC) is a
color touch screen with an
intuitive graphical user interface
(Figure 1-3).
With the LC, you can configure
and maintain the library, check
status and performance, handle
all daily media operations, send
e-mail with utility results, and
more.
Remote Library Controller
The LC can be displayed and operated remotely in any supported web browser; this
remote interface is called the Remote Library Controller (RLC).
Note: As of the printing of this guide, the supported web browsers are
Internet Explorer 6.0 and above, and Firefox 1.07 and above.
The RLC lets users access the same features and functions that are available through
the LC, excluding only the functions that involve the direct use of the physical library
(for example, the use of the TeraPack Access Port, or TAP).
Note: You can run no more than two simultaneous RLC sessions.
User Security
Library users are configured for the library in one of three groups: superuser,
administrator, or operator. For descriptions of the security privileges assigned to each
group, see User Types and Privileges on page 22.

AutoSupport
AutoSupport helps manage problems you may experience with the library. It guides
you through the process of sending e-mail regarding library problems—along with
library logs and configuration information—directly to Technical Support. AutoSupport
Level One is included with your library purchase; you can purchase AutoSupport Level
Two as needed.
Online Access to Spectra Logic
When the library is set up with access to the Internet, the bottom portion of the RLC
displays technical tips, allows one-click access to Spectra Logic’s Knowledge Base,
streamlines the online ordering of media and capacity, and more. Online access can be
enabled or disabled during any browser session; it does not affect AutoSupport.
Observatory
The Observatory option provides remote monitoring and management functions for
the library.
Centralized Remote Management: Observatory, which uses EXtensible Markup
Language (XML), allows users to see information remotely that is normally only
available on the library’s General Status and System Messages screens. This is a step
above the RLC feature that is included with the library, however, because users can
view the Spectra T50 library’s functions in combination with those of multiple other
Spectra Logic libraries (see Figure 1-4 on page 13).
Note: You can run no more than two simultaneous Observatory sessions.
Automatic E-mail Alerts: Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) allows users to receive
library status information in e-mail. When library messages are generated through
the LC, the library automatically sends e-mail notifications to selected users.
Information included in the notification consists of the number of the message, its
severity, its details, its remedy, and the time it was generated. Message types
include Informational, Error, Warning, and Fatal; users can configure the library to
select which types of messages are sent.

Advanced Communication across the Environment: Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) allows the user to retrieve general information and messages and
select the hosts to which notifications of new system messages are sent.

Entry/Exit Pools and Storage Pools
Inside the library, cartridges are logically grouped in pools. The grouping depends on
the state of the cartridges—whether they are available for storing data, or whether they
are newly imported or ready to be exported from the library.
• The storage pool is used by the backup software for backups and restores.
• The EE pool is used for newly imported media, and for media ready to be exported.
Exported cartridges aren’t stored in a physical EE port; rather, they are stored in an
internal EE pool. When it is time to remove tapes from a library, all the operator has to
do is access the TeraPack magazine(s) that contain “exported” tapes. The EE pool and
the TAP function together as a configurable EE port.
Figure 1-5 illustrates a backup environment in which 10 cartridges are exported daily.
The user assigns 10 slots (two chambers) to the EE pool, and the 10 cartridges are
exported there by the backup software.
Note that EE slots are not configured by default; these are configured by the user in
five-slot increments.

Partitioning with Shared Library Services
One Partition Required The Spectra T50 library requires the configuration of one
partition. It creates one by default when you install and configure the library, if you
accept the default when prompted. Each partition contains all necessary elements
for a robotic tape library: media slots, tape drives, and a robot.
An advantage of running the library as a single partition is drive availability; all
drives are available to all backup processes.
Multiple Partitions are Optional To partition the library into two to four partitions
(a maximum of one partition per drive), you must purchase an option key for the
number of partitions you would like to configure.
Partitions divide the library logically, so that the partitioned Spectra T50 library
looks to the rest of the backup environment like separate physical libraries—one
library per configured partition. Shared Library Services (SLS) technology simplifies
storage consolidation with no external software or hardware.
Each partition allows access to the drives and slots assigned to it. In some
environments, partitioning is crucial to efficiency and growth. For example, as
shown in Figure 1-6, multiple partitions are useful if the environment uses multiple
backup software packages and each software package requires its own dedicated
library.

2 Getting Started
By following the directions on the Spectra T50 Library Quick-Install poster that
accompanied your library, you have already completed most of these steps.

Library Power
Note: The library must be set up so that the power socket-outlet is
installed near the equipment and is easily accessible.
Powering On and Off
Powering On
With the library’s power cable plugged
in, press the power button (Figure 2-1).
The initialization sequence takes a few
minutes.
Powering Off
Press the power button (Figure 2-1).
The library shuts off.
