Purchase of a Spectra Logic Tape Library includes a license to use one copy of the
control software. This software is loaded into non-volatile RAM in the tape library and may be upgraded or
reloaded from a tape. This software may not be copied for use on another machine without the express

This software license includes unlimited use on the Spectra Logic library hardware for which it was
purchased. The license applies to, but is not limited to, the number of slots in the carousel, the number of
drives in the library, and barcode capabilities.
A license to extend the capabilities or configuration of the software or hardware in this library may be
purchased from Spectra Logic Corporation or through an authorized Spectra Logic reseller. Purchase of an

CAUTION: Use only the data cartridges approved for use in the particular drives
installed in your Spectra 10000 library. Improper data cartridges will result
in damage to the drives, library and cartridges.

CAUTION: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than
those specified herein may result in exposure to hazardous visible laser

ACPower
CAUTION: Risk of electrical shock. Do not remove the library cover. To remove AC
power from the library, unplug the power cord from the power inlet. There
are no user-serviceable parts within the library.
LithiumBattery
CAUTION: The UCM board in the library contains a lithium battery. The battery is
not serviceable by the user. Return the UCM board to Spectra Logic for
proper service. Improper disposal could result in an explosion.

WARNING
RackMounting
CAUTION: These issues must be addressed when rack mounting the Spectra 10000.
1. Make sure the power requirements of the library plus the cumulative power
draw of the other equipment in the rack does not overload the supply circuit
and/or wiring of the rack.
2. The library weighs about 56 lbs. Use caution when lifting the library to install
it in a rack. Ask for help when lifting the library.
3. Always stack the rack from the bottom up to ensure a stable and safe rack.
4. Flat SCSI cables need a minimum rack depth of 27 inches and the rack must be
EMI/RFI shielded. Round SCSI cables need a minimum rack depth of
29 inches.
5. Installing library units in a rack system must not reduce the air flow within the
rack. The maximum recommended ambient temperature for the Spectra 10000
is 32°C.
6. The library unit should be properly grounded to the rack equipment. This
ground connection must be maintained when the supply connection is other
than a direct connection to the branch circuit.

Lithiumbatterie
VORSICHT: Die UCM-Platine der Library enthält eine Lithiumbatterie. Die Batterie

Spectra10000Developer’sGuide
documentstheSerial-to-SCSI CommandLanguage
(SSCL) and Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) commands that are supported by
the Spectra 10000 library. It is meant to be used by systems integrators and developers as
a reference guide to the systems-level control of the library. Information on installing,
configuring and using the Spectra 10000 library can be found in the
Spectra 10000User’s
Guide
and
Spectra 10000 Release Notes
.
Chapters 1 and 2 provide detailed information on the SSCL interface and commands,
while Chapters 3 through 16 describe the SCSI-2 commands the library supports. This

Numbering
All numbers in this manual are assumed to be decimal, unless specifically indicated as
hexadecimal. Hexadecimal numbers in this manual are indicated one of two ways:
•
A number followed by an h is a hexadecimal number, 11h and Bh are hex numbers.
•
A number preceded by 0x is a hexadecimal number, 0x11 and 0xB are hex numbers.
ConnectingtotheLibrary

Connect a serial cable between the library and the host system. The library end of
the cable is a DB-9F connector and the terminal end of the cable is an RJ11
connector. The pinout for this type of serial connection is detailed in the
following table.

All transfers use the standard 128 character ASCII character set.
SSCLInterfaceCommands
The SSCL interface is a communications protocol and command set defining serial (RS-
232) communication between the host system and the tape library. The command set of
the SSCL interface is similar to the extended SCSI-2 media-changer command set.
In normal operation, the library receives SSCL robotic commands from the host system
through the RS-232 serial port. For development purposes, you can interface directly
with the library using the Serial SCSI Command Language and a properly configured
terminal connected to the serial port on the library.

TheSSCLarchitecturedefinesfive phasesoroperatingmodes,described in the following
table. Each phase is distinct and mutually exclusive.
SSCLInterfacePhases
Four SSCL operating parameters are monitored. These phasesof the parameters indicate
the current state of the SSCL interface. The first three parameters, n1, n2, and n3, can
be in any of one of the five phases or modes. The fourth parameter,n4, cover/beeper
status, is a hexadecimal value from 0h to Fh. See
(ENQ) CheckPhase ctl+e
on page 13 for
more information.

The library returns the phases of the operating parameters when queried by the host or
an operator. Issue an ASCII control code to see the phases of the four operating
parameters (s

CommandSequence
The previous table shows the SSCL phases and command sequence.
•
The command sequence is identical whether the library is interfacing with a host
system running backup software or a terminal connected to the RS-232 port.
•
The library must receive a
Synchronous Character, SYN
, (ctl+v) before it will
accept a command.
•
After successfully completing a command, the library responds with
an
Acknowledge

ACK
character. After an unsuccessful operation the library
returns an ASCII
Not-Acknowledged (NAK)
character.

InitializePhase
At powerup the serial port, the front panel, and the SCSI portenter the
Initialize Phase
. The library initializes and performs a self-test initialization. If an error
occurs during the initialization, the library generates hardware error sense code data.
Note:Use Request Sense, command E, to access and clear the sense information
regarding the error. Clear the cause of the error, then reset the library.
During initialization, the library will respond to a limited number of commands. These
commands are I, E and ctl+e.
IdlePhase
After power up and initializing, the libraryenters the
