PREPARING FORTHE INSTALLATION

1. Read the “General Safety” section of thismanualfirstandthen the

entire manual carefully. If you don’t follow the safety rules, the

water heater will not operate properly. It could cause DEATH,

SERIOUSBODILYINJURYAND/ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.

Thismanual containsinstructions fortheinstallation, operation,and

maintenanceof the electric waterheater. It alsocontainswarnings

throughout the manual that you must read and be aware of. All

thewater heater and your safety. Sincewe cannot put everything

Water (Potable) Heating: All models are considered suitable for

water(potable)heatingonly. HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:

Water heaters are intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a

temperature which will satisfy space heating, clothes washing, dish

washing,and other sanitizingneedscan scald and permanentlyinjure

you upon contact. Some people are more likely to be permanently

injuredbyhotwaterthanothers. Theseinclude theelderly, children,the

infirm,orphysically/mentallyhandicapped. Ifanyoneusing hotwater in

yourhomefitsintooneof thesegroups orif thereis alocal codeorstate

lawrequiring acertaintemperature waterat the hotwater tap,thenyou

musttake special precautions. Inadditionto using thelowestpossible

temperaturesetting that satisfies yourhotwaterneeds, a means such

as a *mixing valve, shall be used at the hot water taps used by these

peopleoratthewaterheater. Mixingvalvesareavailablelocal plumbing

contractor. Consult a Qualified Installer or Service Agency. Follow

mixingvalvemanufacturer’sinstructionsforinstallationofthe valves.

Before changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read the

“TemperatureRegulation”sectioninthismanual.

LOCATING THE NEW WATER HEATER

FACTSTO CONSIDERABOUT THELOCATION Carefully choose an indoorlocationfor the newwaterheater, because

the placement is a very important consideration for the safety of the

occupants in the building and for the most economical use of the

appliance.

Whetherreplacingan old water heater or putting the waterheaterina

newlocation,thefollowing critical points must be observed:

1. Select a location indoors as close as practical or centralizedtothe

waterpipingsystem aspossible.Thewaterheater shouldbelocated

in anareanot subject to freezing temperatures.

2. Selectedlocationmustprovideadequateclearances(4”)forservicing

partssuchasthethermostats,drainvalveandreliefvalve.Adequate

clearancefor servicing this applianceshouldbe considered before

installation,such as changing theanodes,etc.

Installationofthe waterheatermustbeaccomplished insuchamanner

thatif the tank or any connections should leak,theflowwill not cause

damagetothe structure. Forthisreason,itis notadvisabletoinstallthe

waterheater inanattic or upperfloor. When suchlocationscannot be

avoided,asuitabledrainpanshouldbeinstalledunderthewater heater.

Drainpansareavailablefrom your local plumbingcontractor. Such a

drainpanmusthave a minimum length and width of at least 2 inches

(51mm)greater thatthewaterheaterdimensions andmustbepipedto

anadequate drain.

Waterheater life depends uponwaterquality, water pressure and the

environmentin which the water heater is installed.Waterheatersare

sometimesinstalled inlocationswhere leakage mayresult in property

damage,evenwith the use of a drain panpiped to a drain. However,

unanticipateddamagecanbe reducedor preventedbyaleakdetector

or water shut-off device used in conjunction with a piped drain pan.

Thesedevices are availablefromsome plumbing supply wholesalers

andretailers,anddetectandreacttoleakageinvariousways:

• Sensorsmounted inthe drainpanthattriggeran alarmorturnoffthe

incomingwatertothewaterheaterwhenleakageisdetected.

• Sensors mounted in the drain pan that turn off the water supply to

theentirehomewhenwaterisdetectedin the drain pan.

• Water supply shut-off devices that activate based on the water

pressure differential between the cold water and hot water pipes

connectedtothewaterheater.

LOCATING THE NEW WATER HEATER

• Devicesthatwillturnoffthegassupplyto a gas water heater while

atthesametimeshuttingoff itswater supply.

Also, the water heater must be located and/or protected so it is not

subjectto physical damagebya moving vehicle.

INSULATION BLANKETS

Insulationblankets are availabletothe general public forexternaluse

onelectric water heatersbutare not necessarywiththis product. The

purpose of an insulation blanket is to reduce the standby heat loss

encountered with storage tank heaters. Your water heater meets or

exceedstheNationalApplianceEnergyConversationActstandards

withrespecttoinsulationandstandbylossrequirements, making an

insulationblanket unnecessary.

Should you choose to apply an insulation blanket to this heater, you

should follow these instructions below. Failure to follow these

instructionscanresult in fire, serious personal injury,ordeath.

•Donotcoverthe temperatureandpressure relief(T& P)valvewith

aninsulationblanket.

•Do not cover the instruction manual. Keep it on the side of the

water heater or nearby for future reference.

•Doobtainnew warning and instructionlabelsfor placement on the

blanketdirectly over theexistinglabels.

INSTALLING THE NEW WATER HEATER

WATER PIPING

HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD:

Water heaters are intended to producehot water. Waterheated to a

temperature which will satisfy space heating, clothes washing, dish

washing,cleaningandothersanitizingneedscanscaldandpermanently

injureyouuponcontact. Somepeoplearemorelikelytobepermanently

injuredbyhotwaterthanothers. Theseincludetheelderly, children,

the infirm, or physically/mentally handicapped. If anyone using hot

water in your home fits into one of these groups or if there is a local

code or state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot

watertap, thenyou musttakespecial precautions. Inaddition tousing

the lowest possible temperature setting that satisfies your hot water

needs,ameanssuch asa *mixingvalve, shallbe usedatthehotwater

tapsused bythesepeople or at thewaterheater. Valvesforreducing

pointofusetemperaturebymixingcoldandhotwaterarealsoavailable.

ConsultaQualifiedInstallerorServiceAgency. Follow manufacturer’s

instructionsfor installation of the valves. Before changingthefactory

settingonthe thermostat,readthe “Temperature Regulation”sectionin

thismanual.

This water heater shall not be connected to any heating systems or

component(s)used with a non-potable water heatingappliance.

Toxic chemicals, suchasthoseusedforboilertreatmentshallnotbe

introducedinto this system.

Water supply systems may, because of such events as high line

pressure, frequent cut-offs, the effects of water hammer among

others,haveinstalled devicessuchaspressurereducing valves,check

valves,backflow preventers, etc. to control these types of problems.

Whenthesedevicesare notequipped withan internalby-pass,andno

othermeasuresaretaken, the devices cause the water system to be

closed. Aswaterisheated, itexpands(thermalexpansion)andclosed

systems do not allow for the expansion of heated water.

The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated and

increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving point of

the water heater’s temperature-pressure relief valve is reached, the

valve will relieve the excess pressure. The temperature-pressure

relief valve is not intended for the constant relief of thermal

expansion. Thisisanunacceptable conditionand mustbecorrected.

It is recommended that any devices installed which could create a

closedsystemhave a by-pass and/or the system have an expansion

tankor devicetorelieve thepressurebuilt bythermalexpansion in the

water system. Expansion tanks are available for ordering through a

local plumbing contractor. Contact the local water supplier and/or a

serviceagencyforassistancein controlling these situations.

NOTE: To protect against untimely corrosion of hot and cold

water fittings, it is strongly recommended that di-electric

unions or couplings be installed on this water heater when

connected to copper pipe.

Figure3 shows the typicalattachmentof the water pipingtothe water

heater. The water heater is equipped with 3/4 inch NPT water

connections.

NOTE: If using copper tubing, solder tubing to an adapter

before attaching the adapter to the cold water inlet connection.

Do not solder the cold water supply line directly to the cold

water inlet, it will harm the dip tube and damage the tank.

WATER PIPINGPRESSURE TEST

This section is only for the manufacturer installing the water heater

whenthe installation istocomply with H.U.D.Standards.

When testing the water ways, H.U.D. Standards state: “Water

distribution system: All water piping in the water distribution system

shall be subjected to a pressure test. The test shall be made by

subjectingthe system to air orwaterat100 psi for 15 minuteswithout

loss of pressure. When air pressure is used, the water heater

shall not be connected during the test.”

This heater is provided with a properly certified combination

temperature-pressure relief valve by the manufacturer.

• Ifwater piping systemis to beairpressure tested, thewater

heatermust bedisconnectedfrom the waterpiping system.

• Failure to disconnect the water heater during air pressure

testingofthewatersystemcouldresult inDEATH,SERIOUS

BODILYINJURY,ORPROPERTYDAMAGE.

Thevalve iscertifiedby a nationallyrecognizedtesting laboratorythat

maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment of

materialsasmeetingtherequirementsforRelief ValvesandAutomatic

GasShut-offDevices for Hot Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 •

CSA4.4, andthecode requirementsofASME.

Ifreplaced,thevalve must meet the requirements of local codes, but

not less than a combination temperature and pressure relief valve

certifiedas indicated in the aboveparagraph.

Thevalvemustbemarkedwithamaximumsetpressurenot toexceed

the marked hydrostatic working pressure of the water heater

(150psi=1,035kPa) anda dischargecapacity notless thanthewater

heaterinput rate as shown on themodelrating plate.

For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve must not be

removedfrom itsdesignatedopening norplugged.

Thetemperature-pressure relief valve must be installed directlyinto

thefitting ofthe water heaterdesigned fortherelief valve. Positionthe

valve downward and provide tubing so that any discharge will exit

only within 6 inches (153 mm) above, or at any distance below the

structuralfloor. Becertainthat nocontactismadewithanyliveelectrical

part. Thedischargeopening must not be blocked or reduced in size

underany circumstances. Excessive length,over30 feet (9.14m),or

use of more than four elbows can cause restriction and reduce the

dischargecapacityofthe valve.

Novalveorotherobstructionistobeplacedbetweentherelief valve

andthe tank. Do notconnect tubing directlytodischarge drain unless

a6inch air gap is provided. Topreventbodily injury, hazardtolife,or

propertydamage, the relief valve mustbeallowed to discharge water

inquantitiesshould circumstancesdemand. Ifthedischargepipeisnot

connected to a drain or other suitable means, the water flow may

causeproperty damage.

TheDischargePipe:

• Shallnotbe smaller in size than the outlet pipesizeofthe valve, or

haveanyreducing couplings or other restrictions.

• Shallnot beplugged orblocked.

• Shallbe of material listed for hotwaterdistribution.

• Shall be installed so as to allow complete drainage of both the

temperature-pressurerelief valve, and the dischargepipe.

• Shallterminatebeneath themanufactured home.

• Shallnothaveany valve between the relief valve and tank.

Thetemperature-pressurerelief valve must be manually operated at

leastonce ayear. Cautionshouldbe takentoensurethat (1)no oneis

infront of oraroundthe outletofthe temperature-pressure reliefvalve

dischargeline,and (2) the water manually discharged will not cause

any bodily injury or property damage because the water may be

extremelyhot.

If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and

continues to release water, immediately close the cold water inlet to

the water heater, follow the draining instructions, and replace the

temperature-pressurerelief valve with a new one.

FILLINGTHE WATERHEATER

Never use this water heater unless it is completely full of water. To

preventdamage to the tank, thetankmustbefilledwith water. Water

must flow from the hot water faucet before turning “ON” electrical

supplytothe water heater.

To fill the water heater with water:

1. Closethewaterheater drainvalveby turningthe handletotheright

(clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of the water

heater.

2. Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.

NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open when

the water heater is in use.

3. To insurecomplete fillingofthetank,allowair toexitby openingthe

nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run until a constant flow

isobtained. Thiswillletair out of the water heater and the piping.

4. Checkallwaterpipingand connectionsforleaks. Repairasneeded.

T&P VALVE and PIPE INSULATION (On Selected Models)

Removeinsulation forT&PValveand pipeconnectionsfrom carton.

Fitpipe insulation over the incomingcoldwaterline and the hot water

line. Make sure that the insulation is against the side jacket of the

heater.

FitT&PValveinsulationover valve.Makesure thattheinsulationdoes

notinterferewiththeleveroroutletoftheT&Pvalve.

Secureall insulationusing tape.

Neveruse waterheater unlessitis completelyfullof water. Toprevent

damagetothetankandheatingelement,thetank must be filled with

water. Water must flow from the hot water faucet before turning on

power.

You must provide all wiring of the proper size outside of the water

heater. Youmustobeylocalcodesandelectriccompanyrequirements

when you install this wiring.

Ifyou are not familiar with electric codes andpractices,orifyou have

any doubt in your ability to connect the wiring to this water heater,

obtainthe serviceof acompetentelectrician. Contact alocal electrical

contractorand/or the local electricutility.

WATERHEATERSEQUIPPEDFORONEVOLTAGEONLY:Thiswater

heater is equipped for one type voltage only. Check the rating plate

nearthebottomaccesspanel forthe correctvoltage. DO NOTuse this

waterheater with any voltage otherthanthe one shown on themodel

rating plate. Failure to use the correct voltage can cause problems

whichcanresultinDEATH,SERIOUSBODILYINJURY,ORPROPERTY

DAMAGE. Ifyouhave any questions or doubts consult your electric

company.

If wiring from your fuse box or circuit breaker box was aluminum for

yourold water heater, replace it withcopperwire. If you wish toreuse

the existing aluminum wire, have the connection at the water heater

madeby a competentelectrician. Contact a localelectricalcontractor

and/orthe local electricutility.

1. Provide a way to easily shut off the electric power when working

on the water heater. This could be with a circuit breaker or fuse

blockintheentrance box or a separate disconnect switch.

2. Install and connect a circuit directly from the main fuse or circuit

breaker box. This circuit must be the right size and have its own

fuseorcircuit breaker.

3. If metal conduit is used forthegroundingconductor:

A. Thegroundingelectrodeconductorshallbeofcopper,aluminum,

orcoppercladaluminum. Thematerialshallbeofonecontinuous

lengthwithout a splice or joint.

B. Rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, or electrical,

metallictubingmaybeusedforthegroundingmeansifconduitor

tubingis terminated infittingsapproved for grounding.

C. Flexiblemetalconduitorflexiblemetallictubingshallbepermitted

forgroundingif all the following conditions are met:

• Thelengthinany groundreturn pathdoes notexceed 6feet.

• The circuit conductors contained therein are protected by

overcurrentdevicesratedat20amperesor less.

• The conduit or tubing is terminated in fittings approved for

grounding.

Forcompletegrounding details and all allowable exceptions, refer to

thecurrent editionof theNationalElectricalCodeNFPA70.

4. Astandard1/2”conduitopeninghasbeenmadeinthewaterheater

junctionbox for the conduit connections.

5. Use wire nuts and connect the power supply wiring to the wires

insidethewater heater’s junction box.

6. Thewater heatermustbe electrically“grounded”by theinstaller. A

green ground screw has been provided in the water heater’s

junctionbox. Connect ground wire to this location.

7. Replace the wiring junction cover using the screws provided.

TEMPERATUREADJUSTMENT

To changethe temperaturesetting:

NOTE:It isnot necessarytoadjusttheupper thermostat.However,ifit

is adjusted above the factory set point (120°F (49°C)/HOT) it is

recommendedthatitnotbesethigherthan thelowerthermostatsetting.

1. Turn “OFF” the heater electrical supply. Do not attempt to adjust

thermostat with power on.

2. Removethe thermostatouterdoors andinsulationcovers fromthe

thermostats.Donotremovetheplasticpersonnelprotectorscovering

thethermostats.

3. Usingaflattipscrewdriver,rotate theadjustmentknobtothedesired

temperaturesetting.

4. Replacetheinsulationcoversandouterdoorsandturn“ON”heater

electricalsupply.

Itis recommended that the dial be set lowerwheneverpossible.

Dueto the natureofthe typical water heater, the watertemperaturein

certainsituations may vary up to30°F(16.7 °C) higher or loweratthe

point of use such as, bathtubs, showers, sink, etc.

Any water heater’s intended purpose is to heat water. Hot water is

neededforcleansing,cleaning,andsanitizing(bodies,dishes,clothing).

Untemperedhot watercanpresent ascaldhazard. Depending onthe

HOTTERWATERCANSCALD:Waterheatersareintendedtoproduce

hot water. Water heated to a temperature which will satisfy space

heating, clothes washing, dish washing, and other sanitizing needs

canscald andpermanently injureyouupon contact. Somepeopleare

morelikely tobepermanently injured byhot water thanothers. These

include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/mentally

handicapped. Ifanyoneusinghotwaterinyourhome fits into one of

thesegroupsor if there is a local code or state law requiring a certain

temperature water at the hot water tap, then you must take special

precautions. Inadditiontousingthelowestpossibletemperaturesetting

thatsatisfiesyourhot water needs, a means such as a mixing valve,

shall be used at the hot water taps used by these people or at the

water heater. Mixing valves are available from your local plumbing

contractor. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for installation of the

valves. Before changing the factory setting on the thermostat, read

the“TemperatureRegulation”sectionin thismanual.

INCREASES THE HAZARDS TO THEM. NEVER ALLOW SMALL

CHILDRENTOUSEAHOTWATERTAP,ORTODRAWTHEIROWN

BATH WATER. NEVER LEAVE ACHILD OR DISABLED PERSON

UNATTENDEDINABATHTUBORSHOWER.

Itis recommendedthat lower watertemperatures beusedto avoidthe

riskof scalding. It isfurtherrecommended,in all cases, thatthewater

temperature thermostat be set for the lowest temperature which

satisfiesyour hot waterneeds,see Figure 9. Thiswillalso provide the

most energy efficient operation of the water heater. Thermostat(s)

are factory set at 120°F (49°C) unless specified differently by state

requirements.
