ARCHITECTURE MIXER
Before we begin to use the controls and sliders in the
mixer, you should have a basic knowledge of the components of
the mixer and the signal ow between the various components.
Without those basics, you might give the impression that some
controls operate incorrectly or not work: there may be another
tight control to a position inconsistent.
Apartfromthat,therearesometermsthatshouldfamiliarizethemselves
with,andtobeusedrepeatedlythroughoutthisusermanual.
CHANNELS
Achannelisamixersectionthatprocessesasingleaudiosignal.
Giventhatthemixerhastwochannels.Despitesignsthatbothchannels
enteringthesamemixer,remainseparateintheirrespectivechannels,
allowingprocessindependentlybeforemixinginonechannel:the
Audience.
GAIN
Whenasignalofanaudiochannelentersamixer,therstthingyoudo

orreducethelevelofthehighest.Thisisanessentialsteptomaintaina
highqualityaudioandbalancethelevelsoftwosongstomix.
EQUALIZER CONTROLS
Then,inthesignalchainistheequalizer,orinshort,theEQ.Ifthegain
controlincreasesordecreasestheleveloftheentireaudiosignal
channel,theEQincreasesortemperslevelofaspecicfrequency
rangeoftheaudiosignal.
Thismixerallowsyoutocontrolthelevelranges(orbands)different
frequency,calledHigh,LowandMid(acute,mediaandsevere)and
theirrespectiveprot.
ItislikelythattheequalizeristhemostpowerfulweaponofaDJmixer
(althoughsomepeoplethinkit’sthecrossfader).
TheEQcontrolsareusedto:
1.-Toimprovethesoundqualityofsomebadsongsproducedor
recorded.
2.-Tohelpbalancetheoverallfrequencycontentoftwosongs.
3.-Emphasizemusicremovingorisolatingoneormorefrequency
bands.
4.-Mixsongssuperimposingthefrequencybandsoftwosongsthat
soundatonce.

Theoldsongsdonotusuallyhavesomanyseriousastoday.Itisoften
usedoftenEQserioustoamplifylow(frequenciessevere)anoldsong
andlevelingitsgravewithamodern.Failuretodosomaygivethe
impressionthat,whenmovingfromonesongatarecentancientmusic
soundslower.
Likewise,eventhesongsrecordedinthesameyearmaysound
differentfromoneanother,yetdespitereproducethesamevolume.This
effectisusuallyduetooneofthemhassomewaysmorepronounced
thantheother.Ifthegraveofbothsongsseemtosoundthesame
volume,youcanusetheEQmeansto“lowervolume”thesongthat
soundsevenstrongerbalancewiththesongweaker.
Also,DJsalsoliketoplayontheirperformancesintheiropinionby
manipulatingthesongsthatcapture.Forexample,aDJthatcancutthe
frequencyofsevereacuteandatrackafewbarsbeforethechorusofa
song,andthenrecoverthemattherighttimeinstartingthechorus.
Whenplayingtwosongsatthesametime,itiscommonthatthe
musicsoundcloudy.Thiseffectisusuallyduetoanincompatibilityof
thetwoserioussongs.Thereasonmaybethattonalityofthetwosongs
isdifferent,orthatbothsongshaveseriouslongandsustainednotes.
Tosolvethisproblemandgainclarity,lowenoughtoeliminateoneof
thesongs.
Themixturewillretainthegraveofanothersong,sowewillcontinue
soundingnatural.

LISTENED WITH EARPHONES
AfterthesignalpassingthroughtheEQ,issenttotwodifferent
destinations.Oneconcernstheheadphones,whichmeanslistening
anaudiosignalwithoutbeingaffectedbythefadervolume(insome
mixersthisfeatureiscalled“Cue”).
Ifyou’renotfamiliarwithusingamixer,thisdenitiondoesnotseemto
makesense.However,thinkofitasifitwereawaytolistentomusic
privately-channelmixer,regardlessofwhattheylistentotheaudience.
CUE
ThecontrolCueservestoestablishapointof‘cue’inasong.Acueisa
pointofreferencepositionwithinthesongtowhichyoucanjump
instantlyratherthanhavingtogotondtherunway.
Normally,inaccordancewithDJscuepointsatthebeginningofatime
ofthesong.

FADERS VOLUME CHANNEL
Besidessenttothesectionofheadphones,theaudiocomesfromthe
EQalsosendsthevolumefaderchannel.
Thisisthevolumecontrolofthemainchannel(thoughitissubjectto
crossfader).Theycanmatchthevolumesoftwotracks.
However,someDJsprefertokeepthevolumefaderschannelatits
highestpositionandadjustthevolumeofsongsthroughtheGain
controls.Thereasonforthischoiceisthatallowsthemtousethese
fadersforotherpurposesasmoltenvolume,choppycutsoreffects
similartothetechniquesemployedwiththecrossfader.Decanterby
eithermethodisamatterofpersonalpreference.
Youcanusethevolumeslidertoadjustthevolumefaderchannel
CROSSFADER
Theaudiosignal,afterleavingtheindividualchannelsthroughthemixer
volumefaderchannel,issenttothesideofthecrossfaderitsshare.
Asyoucansee,hernameisveryappropriate,sinceitallowsconduct
afadingbetweenthetwochannelswithamovementfromsidetoside
mixer.

mixer.IfyoumovethecrossfadertotallyleftaloneheartheChannel1.
Ifyoumovethecrossfaderfullyclockwise,onlyheartheChannel2
ThecrossfaderwasinventedtoprovideDJsaneasywaytoaccomplish
withonehandmeltedoffasongandotherinput,andthetruthisthat
fullsitsroleperfectly.However,sinceitsintroduction,DJshave
transformedthissimpletoolintoapowerfulweaponthatenables
extremelyfastcuts,scratches,andmanyothertechniques.
