Equipment and features

engineering changes and improvements
are made from time to time. If the
operating characteristics or the
appearance of your machine differ from
those described in this manual, please
contact your STIHL dealer for
assistance.
Therefore some changes, modifications
and improvements may not be covered
in this manual.

Special safety
precautions must be
taken when working with
the cut-off machine, due
to the very high rotational
speed of the cutting wheel.
Carefully read through the
complete Instruction
Manual before using the
machine for the first time
and keep the Manual in a
safe place for future
reference. Failure to comply with the
safety instructions may be fatal.
Observe the nationally applicable safety
regulations such as those issued by
employer's liability insurance
associations, social insurance offices,
labour-protection authorities, etc.
If you have never used a power tool
before, have the STIHL dealer or other
expert show you how to operate your
machine safely – or attend a special
training course.
Minors should never be allowed to use a
power tool. The only exception to this
rule is in the case of young trainees over
the age of 16 when supervised by an
experienced operator.
Keep children, animals and bystanders
well away from the machine.
If the machine is not being used, it must
be switched off and laid down so that it
cannot endanger other people. The
machine must be protected against
unauthorized use.
The user is responsible for accidents
and hazards suffered by other people or
their property.
The machine may only be lent or rented
to other people who are fully familiar with
this model and its operation. Never lend
or rent the machine without the
Instruction Manual!
The machine may only be operated by
people who are fit, in good physical
health and in good mental condition.
If strenuous activity is not permitted for
reasons of health, you should first
consult your doctor whether you can
actually work with a power tool.
If you have a cardiac pacemaker: The
machine's ignition system generates a
very small electromagnetic field. An
influence on certain pacemaker types
cannot be excluded entirely. To avoid all
health hazards, you should consult your
doctor and the manufacturer of your
cardiac pacemaker.
Never work with the machine when
under the influence of alcohol,
medication or drugs which could impair
your reaction.
Do not work in inclement weather (snow,
ice, wind) – high risk of accidents!
The machine may only be used for
abrasive cutting. It must not be used to
cut wood or other wooden items.
Asbestos dust is extremely harmful to
health – never cut asbestos!
The machine must not be used for other
purposes, as this may lead to accidents
or damage to the machine. The machine
must not be modified in any way – this
may also result in accidents or damage
to the machine.
Only cutting wheels and accessories
which have been approved by STIHL or
are technically equivalent may be used
on this machine. Contact your dealer if in
doubt. Only high-quality cutting wheels
and accessories may be used in order to
avoid accidents or damage to the
machine.
Safety precautions and
working technique

STIHL recommends that only original
STIHL cutting wheels and accessories
be used, as their properties have been
optimized for the machine and for the
user's requirements.
Never use circular saw
blades, carbide, rescue,
wood-cutting or other
serrated tools of any
kind – risk of fatal
injuries!
Instead of uniformly
removing particles as when cutting with
an abrasive wheel, the teeth of a circular
saw blade may snag in the material and
cause the machine to react in a highly
aggressive manner with uncontrolled
and extremely dangerous kickback.
Clothing and equipment
The specified clothing and equipment
must be used at all times.
Clothing must be
appropriate and allow
complete freedom of
movement. It should fit
snugly, like a boilersuit.
A working jacket is not
sufficient.
Always wear clothing made of barely
flammable material (e.g. leather or
cotton with flame-retardant finish – no
manmade fibres) when cutting steel, as
flying sparks may cause the clothing
to catch fire!
Ensure there are no flammable deposits
(chips, fuel, oil, etc.) on the clothing.
Never wear loose-fitting garments, a
scarf, necktie or jewellery which could
become caught in moving parts of the
machine.
Long hair must be tied back or tucked
away.
Wear safety boots with
non-slip soles and steel
toe caps.
Wear a safety helmet
whenever there is any risk
of falling objects and
always wear a face mask
and goggles to protect
against flying objects.
Important! A face mask does not
provide adequate protection for the
eyes.
Dust (e.g. crystalline material from the
material to be cut), fumes and smoke
may be produced while working – health
hazard!
Always wear a dust mask in the
presence of major and/or continuous
dust.
Wear respiratory protection if vapours
or smoke must be expected (e.g. when
cutting composites).
Wear "personal" hearing protection,
such as ear defenders.
Wear sturdy gloves –
preferably leather gloves.
STIHL can supply a comprehensive
range of protective clothing and
equipment.

Transporting the power tool
Always switch off the engine.
The machine may only be carried by its
handle, with the cutting wheel at the rear
and the hot muffler facing away from the
body.
Do not touch any hot parts of the
machine, particularly the surface of the
muffler, otherwise you may suffer
serious burns!
Never transport the machine with the
cutting wheel fitted – risk of breaking!
In vehicles, secure the machine so that
it cannot tip over and suffer damage.
Ensure that fuel cannot be spilled.
Refuelling
Petrol is highly
inflammable. Keep away
from naked lights and do
not spill any fuel.
No smoking.
Switch off the engine before refuelling.
Wait for the engine to cool before
refuelling, as the fuel may overflow and
catch fire! The fuel filler cap must be
opened carefully so that any excess
pressure is relieved gradually and fuel
does not splash out.
The machine may only be refuelled in a
well ventilated place. It must be cleaned
immediately if fuel has been spilled.
Change your clothes immediately if they
are contaminated with fuel.
Dust may accumulate on the power unit,
particularly around the carburetor. This
dust may ignite if it becomes soaked
with fuel. Remove all dirt and dust from
the power unit regularly.
Look out for leaks. Do not
start the engine if there is
any sign of leaking fuel –
potentially fatal burns
may result!
Different cut-off machines may be
equipped with different fuel filler caps:
Bayonet filler cap
Never use a tool to open or close the
bayonet filler cap, as this could damage
the cap and cause fuel to leak out.
The bayonet filler cap must be closed
with care after refuelling.
Fuel filler cap with screw thread
Secure the fuel filler cap
as tightly as possible after
refuelling.
This reduces the risk of the cap working
loose due to engine vibrations and fuel
leaking out.

Cut-off machine, spindle bearing
A correctly mounted spindle bearing
ensures that the diamond cutting wheel
rotates without axial wobble or radial
run-out. It should be checked by a
servicing dealer if necessary.
Cutting wheels
Selecting a cutting wheel
The cutting wheels must be approved for
free-hand cutting. Do not use other
cutting wheels or attachments – risk of
accidents!
Different cutting wheels should be used
for different materials. The cutting
wheels are marked accordingly.
The diameter of the
spindle hole in the cutting
wheel must match the
shaft on the cut-off
machine.
Examine the spindle hole for signs of
damage. Cutting wheels with damaged
spindle hole must not be used – risk of
accidents!
The permissible speed of
the cutting wheel must be
equal to or greater than
the nominal spindle speed
of the cut-off machine.
Refer to the chapter
"Specifications".
Used cutting wheels must be examined
for cracks, chipping, undercut,
unevenness, core fatigue, damage or
loss of segments, signs of overheating
(discoloration) and possible damage to
the spindle hole before they are reused.
Never use a chipped, cracked or warped
cutting wheel.
Never dress a diamond cutting wheel.
Never use a cutting wheel which has
dropped onto the ground – a damaged
cutting wheel may shatter – risk of
accidents!
Note the use-by date on composite
cutting wheels.
Mounting the cutting wheel
Examine the spindle of the cut-off
machine: do not use the cut-off machine
if the spindle is damaged – risk of
accidents!
Note the direction of rotation indicated
by the arrow on diamond cutting wheels.
Position the anti-twist device, screw the
clamping screw tight and turn the cutting
wheel by hand: check its radial and axial
run-out at the same time.
Storing the cutting wheel
Cutting wheels must be stored in a dry
and frost-free place, on a level surface
and at a constant temperature – risk of
breaking or shattering!
Cutting wheels must always be
prevented from knocking against the
ground or other objects.

Before starting
Check that the cut-off machine is in good
working order – note the corresponding
chapters in the Instruction Manual:
– The cutting wheel must be suitable
for the material to be cut. It must be
in good condition and fitted correctly
(direction of rotation, securely
seated).
– Check that the wheel guard is
secure – contact your STIHL dealer
if it is loose.
– The throttle trigger and throttle
trigger interlock must move easily
and return automatically to the idle
position when released.
– The slide control / stop switch must
move easily to the STOP or 0
position.
–
Check that the spark plug terminal is
secure. A loose spark plug terminal
may produce sparks which could
ignite any escaping fuel-air mixture
–
fire hazard!
– The operating and safety elements
must not be modified in any way.
– The handles must be clean and dry
at all times and free from oil or dirt
so that the machine can be guided
safely.
The machine may only be operated
when in perfect working order, otherwise
serious accidents may result!
Starting the engine
Move at least 3 metres away from the
place at which the machine was
refuelled and never indoors.
The machine may only be laid down on
level ground. Ensure a firm and secure
footing. Hold the machine securely – the
cutting wheel must not touch any other
objects or the ground and must not be in
the cut.
The cutting wheel may begin to rotate as
soon as the machine is started.
The machine is operated by only one
person. There should not be any other
person within the working area, not even
when starting the machine.
Do not drop-start the machine. Always
proceed as described in the Instruction
Manual.
The cutting wheel runs on (coasts) for
some time after the throttle trigger has
been released – risk of accidents!
Holding and guiding the machine
The cut-off machine may only be used
for free-hand cutting or when mounted
on the STIHL cart.
Free-hand cutting
Always hold the machine firmly with
both hands: right hand on the rear
handle, even if you are left-handed. Both
handles must be firmly grasped with the
thumbs so that the machine can be
guided safely.
When a cut-off machine with rotating
cutting wheel is moved in the direction of
the arrows, a force is produced which
causes the machine to tip sideways.

The object to be cut must lie securely.
Always guide the machine towards the
workpiece – never the other way round.
Cart
STIHL cut-off machines can be mounted
on a STIHL cart.
Wheel guard
The wheel guard must be set correctly
so that particles of material are guided
away from the user and machine.
Note the direction in which the cut
particles are ejected.
During work
If danger is imminent or in an
emergency, switch the engine off
immediately and move the slide control /
stop switch to the STOP or 0position.
Ensure that the engine runs at the
correct idle speed so that the cutting
wheel is no longer driven and comes to
a halt when the throttle trigger is
released.
Check the idle setting regularly and
correct it if necessary. Have the machine
checked and repaired by a servicing
dealer if the cutting wheel continues to
turn nevertheless.
Clear the working area – look out for
obstacles and other holes or pitfalls.
Beware of slipping on ice, water, snow,
slopes or uneven ground, etc.!
Do not use the cut-off machine when
standing on a ladder or in an unsteady
position. Never work overhead with the
cut-off machine and never operate it with
only one hand. Risk of accidents!
Always ensure a firm and secure footing.
Never work alone. Always ensure there
is someone within calling range to help
in an emergency.
Never allow anyone inside the working
area – keep well away from other people
to protect them from noise and flying
objects.
Particular care and circumspection must
be exercised when working with ear
defenders, as warning sounds (calls,
siren tones, etc.) are only dimly
perceived.
Take a break before it is too late.
Work calmly and methodically, taking
care to ensure good visibility and
lighting. Take care not to endanger other
people.
The machine emits
poisonous exhaust fumes
as soon as the engine
starts running. These
fumes may be odourless
and invisible and they
may contain unburned hydrocarbons
and benzene. For this reason, the
machine must never be operated
indoors or in poorly ventilated places –
not even if it has a catalytic converter.
Thorough ventilation must be ensured at
all times when working in trenches, low-
lying areas or confined spaces. Toxic
fumes can kill!

Stop work immediately if you feel sick,
develop a headache or if your hearing or
vision is impaired (e.g. if the field of
vision becomes smaller), or if you feel
dizzy or unable to concentrate. These
symptoms may also be caused by
excessive exhaust concentrations – risk
of accidents!
No smoking when working with the
machine and when near the machine –
risk of fire!
If the machine has been exposed to
stresses for which it was not designed
(e.g. due to impacts or being dropped), it
must be carefully examined to ensure it
is in perfect working order before being
reused – see "Before starting". The fuel
system in particular must be checked to
ensure there are no leaks. Correct
functioning of the safety elements must
also be verified. Never use a power tool
which is no longer in good condition.
Consult your STIHL dealer if in doubt.
Do not work in the starting throttle
position, as the engine speed cannot be
controlled in this position.
Never touch a rotating cutting wheel with
your fingers or any other part of the
body.
Examine the workplace. Avoid all
danger due to damaged piping and
electrical wiring.
The machine must not be used near
inflammable substances or gases.
Never cut into pipes, metal barrels,
tanks or other vessels unless it is
absolutely certain that they do not
contain any volatile or inflammable
substances.
Never leave the machine unattended
with the engine running. Switch off the
engine before leaving the machine
(e.g. for a break).
Before putting the machine on the
ground:
– Switch off the engine.
– Wait until the cutting wheel has
come to a complete stop.
The cutting wheel must be
examined frequently and
immediately replaced if it
is found to be cracked,
warped or damaged in
any other way (e.g.
overheating). Risk of accidents if it
shatters!
Stop work if the machine's cutting
behaviour changes (e.g. excessive
vibrations, reduced cutting
performance) and remedy the cause of
the changes.
Reactive forces
Kickback and pulling away are the
commonest reaction forces.
Danger due to kickback
Kickback can cause fatal injuries.
When a kickback reaction occurs, the
cut-off machine is catapulted up towards
the user suddenly and uncontrollably.
Kickback occurs, for example, when
the cutting wheel
– jams in the cut – especially in the
upper quarter – or
– is severely braked by frictional
contact with a solid object.

Reduce the risk of kickback
– Work calmly and methodically.
– Hold the cut-off machine firmly and
securely with both hands.
– Do not cut with the upper quarter of
the cutting wheel. Advance the
cutting wheel into the cut with
extreme care, without twisting and
without pushing.
– Always be prepared for any
movement of the workpiece or other
factors closing the cut and jamming
the cutting wheel.
– The workpiece must be secured
and supported so that the cut
remains open, both while cutting
and afterwards.
– Use wet cutting when working with
diamond cutting wheels.
Pulling away
The cut-off machine pulls forwards,
away from the user, if the cutting wheel
touches the workpiece from above.
Working – cutting
The cutting wheel must be
guided straight in the cut,
without wedging. Never
exert lateral pressure on
the cutting wheel.
It must not be used for
lateral grinding or
scrubbing.
Do not stand in line with the cutting
wheel.
Do not lean too far forwards and never
bend over the cutting wheel, especially
when the wheel guard is raised.
Never work above shoulder level.

The cut-off machine may only be used
for abrasive cutting. It must not be used
as a lever or shovel.
Do not press against the cut-off
machine.
Always decide the cutting direction
before positioning the cut-off machine.
Do not change direction while cutting.
Avoid knocks and bumps with the
machine while in the cut. Do not let the
machine drop into the cut – the cutting
wheel may shatter!
Diamond cutting wheels: If the cutting
performance deteriorates, check the
sharpness of the diamond cutting wheel
and resharpen it if necessary by briefly
cutting in abrasive material, such as
sandstone, aerated concrete or asphalt.
At the end of the cut, the machine is no
longer supported by the cutting wheel in
the cut. The full weight of the machine
must be supported by the user – beware
of losing control of the machine!
Glowing metal particles
may cause fires when
cutting through steel!
Keep water and sludge well away from
electric cables – risk of electric
shocks!
To obtain a clean cut, the cutting wheel
should be pulled into the workpiece if
possible or moved back and forth in
cutting direction. It must never be
pushed.
Use wet cutting, e.g. with the STIHL
water attachment, when working with
diamond cutting wheels.
Composite cutting wheels cannot be
used for wet cutting. Wet composite
cutting wheels become dull and blunt.
If composite cutting wheels become wet
during work (e.g. due to puddles or
water in pipes), continue working with
the same pressure: do not apply
additional pressure – the cutting wheel
may shatter!
Wet composite cutting wheels must
always be used up immediately.
Cart
Keep a clear path for the cart. The
cutting wheel may become wedged in
the cut and break if the cart is pushed
over obstacles!
Vibrations
Prolonged use of the unit may result in
vibration-induced circulation problems in
the hands (whitefinger disease).
No general recommendation can be
given for the length of usage because it
depends on several factors.
The period of usage is prolonged by:
– Hand protection (wearing warm
gloves)
–breaks
The period of usage is shortened by:
– Any personal tendency to suffer
from poor circulation (symptoms:
frequently cold fingers, itching).
– Low outside temperatures.
– Gripping force (a tight grip hinders
circulation).
Continual and regular users should
monitor closely the condition of their
hands and fingers. If any of the above
symptoms appear, seek medical advice.

Maintenance and repairs
The machine must be serviced regularly.
Do not attempt any maintenance or
repair work not described in your
Owner’s Manual. All other work should
be carried out by a servicing dealer.
STIHL recommends that maintenance
and repair work be carried out only by
authorized STIHL dealers. STIHL
dealers receive regular training and are
supplied with technical information.
Use only high-quality replacement parts,
in order to avoid the risk of accidents or
damage to the machine. Contact a
dealer if in doubt.
STIHL recommends the use of genuine
STIHL spare parts. Such parts have
been optimized for the machine and the
user's requirements.
Before starting any maintenance or
repair work and before cleaning the
machine, always stop the engine and
disconnect the spark plug boot to
avoid all risk of injury if the engine
starts up inadvertently. – Exception:
adjustment of carburetor and idle speed.
Do not service or store the machine near
a naked light – risk of fire due to the
fuel.
Check fuel cap regularly for tightness.
Use only the spark plugs approved by
STIHL – see Specifications.
Inspect ignition lead (insulation in good
condition, secure connection).
To r e d u c e t h e risk of fire due to ignition
outside the cylinder, move the slide
control / stop switch to STOP or 0before
turning the engine over on the starter
with the spark plug boot removed or the
spark plug unscrewed.
Check that the muffler is in perfect
working condition.
Do not use the machine if the muffler is
damaged or missing – risk of fire! –
Hearing damage!
Do not touch the hot muffler – risk of
burns!
Check the rubber buffers underneath the
machine – the housing must not rub
against the ground – risk of damage!
The condition of the anti-vibration
buffers influences the machine's
vibrations – they must be examined
regularly.

Diamond cutting wheels can only
be used for wet cutting
Increase service life and cutting
speed
Ensure that the cutting wheel is
generously supplied with water,
up to 10 litres per minute.
Bind dust
The cutting wheel must be supplied with
at least 0.6 litres water per minute.
Water connection
– Water attachment kit for mounting
on the machine, for all types of
water supply
– Pressurized 10 litre water tank for
binding dust
– Water tank for mounting on the
Cutquik cart, for binding dust
Composite resin cutting wheels
can only be used for dry cutting
A suitable dust mask must be worn
when cutting without water.
Respiratory protection must be worn if
fumes or smoke are to be expected
when cutting (e.g. when cutting
composites).
Composite resin cutting wheels cannot
be used for wet cutting.
Points to be noted with diamond
and composite resin cutting
wheels
Object to be cut
– Must be fully supported
– Must be secured so that it cannot
roll or slip away
– Must be protected against vibration
Cut parts
The cutting sequence is important when
cutting openings and recesses, etc. The
last cut must always be made in such a
way that the cutting wheel cannot be
become jammed and so that the user is
not endangered by the part which has
been cut off or out.
If applicable, leave small ridges to hold
the severed part in position. These
ridges can subsequently be broken.
A number of points must be decided
before the part is finally severed:
– How heavy is the part?
– In which direction can it move after
being severed?
– Is it under tension?
Helpers must not be endangered when
the part is broken off or out.

Cutting in several passes
A = Mark cutting line
:Work along the cutting line. If
corrections are necessary, always
reposition the cutting wheel afresh,
taking care to ensure that it is not
wedged. The cutting depth per pass
should not exceed 5 to 6 cm.
Thicker material must be cut in
several passes.
:Thick-walled workpieces should be
cut with a uniform swinging
movement, back and forth.
Cutting slabs
:Place the slab securely on a non-
slip surface.
A=Cut a guiding groove along the
marked line.
B=Cut deeper into the parting cut with
uniform back-and-forth movements.
C=Leave a ridge.
:First cut through the slab at the ends
so the material does not chip.
:Then break the slab.

:Curves must be cut in several
passes, taking care to ensure that
the cutting wheel does not become
wedged.
Cutting round and hollow
workpieces
:Pipes and round objects, etc. must
be secured so that they cannot roll
away.
:Avoid reinforcements, especially in
the direction of the cut, when
deciding on the cutting line.
:Cut a guiding groove along the
marked line.
:Cut deeper into the parting cut with
uniform back-and-forth movements.
Advance the cutting wheel along the
guiding groove at full cutting depth.
Always reposition the cutting wheel
afresh, taking care not to wedge it if
the cutting direction has to be
corrected slightly. If necessary,
leave small ridges to hold the
severed part in position. These
ridges can subsequently be broken
off.
Cutting shapes on pipes
:Mark the cutting line.
Particular care and precision are
required for free-hand cutting along
such cutting lines.
:Cut a guiding groove along the
marked cutting line, starting at the
top and moving out towards both
sides.
:Cut into the pipe or round object,
etc. at the ends of the cutting line so
that the material does not chip.

:Cut deeper into the parting cut with
uniform back-and-forth movements,

cutting wheel along the guiding
groove at full cutting depth. Always
reposition the cutting wheel afresh,
taking care not to wedge it if the
cutting direction has to be corrected
slightly. If necessary, leave small
ridges to hold the severed part in
position. These ridges can
subsequently be broken off.

Short names
The short name is a combination of
letters and numerals with up to four
digits:

Radial and axial run-out
A correctly mounted spindle bearing on
the cut-off machine is essential for a
long service life and efficient operation
of the diamond cutting wheel.
Using a cutting wheel on a cut-off
machine with defective spindle bearing
can lead to axial and radial run-out.
Excessive radial run-out (A) causes
individual diamond segments to be
overloaded and overheat. This can in
turn lead to stress cracking in the parent
wheel or to annealing of individual
segments.
Axial run-out or wobble (B) results in
higher thermal stress and wider cuts.

Undercut
:Do not cut right through into the
base course (frequently crushed
stone and gravel) when cutting
carriageway pavements. Light-
coloured dust is produced when
cutting through crushed stone and
gravel. This can give rise to
excessive undercut – the cutting
wheel may break!
Built-up edges, dressing
Built-up edges appear as a pale grey
deposit on the top of the diamond
segments which clogs and blunts the
segments.
Built-up edges can form:
– when cutting extremely hard
material, such as granite,
– as a result of incorrect handling,
such as applying excessive feed
force,
– if extremely large sections are cut
without a pendulum movement
(back and forth in the cutting plane).
Built-up edges increase vibrations,
reduce cutting performance and cause
sparking.
Diamond cutting wheels must be
"dressed" at the first sign of built-up
edges. For this purpose, briefly cut
through abrasive material, such as
sandstone, aerated concrete or asphalt.
Addition of water prevents the formation
of built-up edges.
If a cutting wheel with blunt segments
remains in use, the segments may
soften on account of the great heat built
up. The parent wheel anneals and loses
its mechanical strength. This can lead to
considerable stress, as clearly indicated
by wobbling movement of the cutting
wheel. Such cutting wheels must not be
used further – risk of accidents!
