• Donotpluginorswitchontheunitwithout
havingthecookingpaninsidetheunit.
• Donotoperatetheunitonaninclinedsurface
• Useyourunitwellawayfromwallsand
curtains,anddon’tuseinconfinedspaces.
• Checkthepressureandsteamreleasevalve
beforeuse,andifcloggedcleanasnecessary.
• Donotoperatetheunitwithoutfoodor
liquidinthecookingpan.Neverexceedthe
maximummarkingsontheinsideofthe
cookingpan,ormaximumandminimum
quantitiesstatedintherecipesprovided.Some
foodsexpandduringcooking,anditmayresult
indevelopingexcesspressure.
• Placetheunitsothatthepressureandsteam
releasevalveispositionedawayfromthebody.
• Ensurethelidislockedbeforeuse.(Frypan

The Control Panel
ThecontrolpanelonthePressureCookerisdesignedtoensureeasyuseandtoshowthe
progressofyourcooking.Choosefromthe7cookingmenus–PressureCook,SlowCook,Rice,
SteamandFrypan(Brown,Sauté,Simmer).Chooseyourcookingmenu,setthetimeandstart
cooking.

Tip:Duringprogrammingifnobuttonhas
beenpressedafter20minutes,theunitwill
enterthestand-bymode,andtheLCDscreen
willturnoff.

1.Removeallpackaging,plastic,paperand
cardboardfromtheunit.
2.Ensurethepowerisswitchedoffatthe
poweroutlet,andremovethepowercord
fromtheunit.
3.Removethesafetylockinglidbyturning
clockwisetounlock.Removethesealing
gasketfromthelidandwashthegasket
andthelidinwarmsoapywater.Drythe
sealinggasketandlidthoroughlybefore
reattachingthesealinggaskettothelid.
Seefigurebelow.Ensurethesealinggasket
issmoothlyandsecurelyinplaceinthe
gasketholder.Ifthesealinggasketisnotin
thecorrectpositionthelidwillnotbeable
toformasealandwillnotbeabletogain
pressure.
4.Removethecookingpanandthe
condensationcollectorandwashinwarm,
soapywater.Drythoroughlybefore
replacingbackintheunit.

The Safety Lid
TheSunbeamPressureCookerhasbeen
designedwithsafetyinmindandhasvarious
switchoffsafetymeasures.
1.Pressurewillnotbuildifthelidisnotshut
correctlyandhasnotsealed.
2.Pressurewillnotbuildifthelidisnot
lockedintheLOCKposition.
3.Pressurewillnotbuildifthepressureand
steamvalvehasnotbeenswitchedtothe
‘SEAL’position.
4.Pressurewillnotbuildifthegasketor
thevalveshavebecomeclogged.The
gasketandthevalvescanberemovedfor
cleaning.(Seepage24).
5.Thepressureandsteamreleasevalvehas
anextendedfingertab,designedtokeep
thehandawayfromthetopofthesteam
valve.Flickthetabto‘RELEASE’position
toreleasepressure.
6.Oncethepressureincreases,thelidcan
notbeopened.Safetysensorsensurethe
pressureremainswithinthesetrange.
7.Thepressurecookerrequiresliquidto
work.Iftheunithasbecomedry,aDry
errorwillappearintheLCDscreen.
8.Attheendofcookingthelidcannotbe
unlockeduntilallthepressureisreleased.
Thiscanbedoneusingthenaturalrelease
orquickreleasemethodslistedbelow.
Releasing Pressure at the End of Cooking
a.NaturalReleaseMethod.Theunitis
turnedoffandlefttocoolgraduallyuntil
thepressurereleasesonitsown.Thelid
isthenabletoberemoved.Dependingon
thevolumeoffood,thiscantake5–20
minutes.
b.QuickReleaseMethod.Usinganovenmitt
flickthetabonthepressureandsteam
releasevalvetothe‘RELEASE’setting.
Donotplaceanypartofyourhandorbody
overthesteamoutletonthetopofthe
valveassteamisveryhotandmayscald.
Never use this method when cooking liquid
ingredients such as casseroles, stocks and
soups.Thepressureisreleasedwhensteam
isnolongerescapingfromthevalveand
thelidopensfreelywithnoforce.Only
thenisitsafetoremovethelidandserve
food.
Note: Do not force the lid to open. If it does
not open freely this means that the unit is still
under pressure.
Note: During cooking, steam will build up in the
unit, so when lifting the lid use a kitchen glove
or mitt to protect your hand.
Tip:Rememberifthelidisnotshutcorrectly,
ifthevalvesandgasketarecloggedand
ifthepressureandsteamvalveisnotin
the‘SEAL’position,theunitcannotgain
pressureandanERRORmessagewillappear
intheLCDscreen.Checkthegasketsealis

PressureCookingisanidealwaytocreate
quick,flavoursomeanddeliciousmeals.
PressureCookingisamethodofcookingfood
inliquid(water,stock,wineetc)inasealed
cookingpan.Thesealedunitretainssteam
andbuildspressureraisingthetemperature
oftheliquidinsidethepanaboveboiling
point.Theincreasedtemperatureofthe
liquidandthesteamresultsinreduced
cookingtimes.Italsocausesthefibresin
foodtobreakdownmorequickly,resulting
intender,flavoursomemeats.Vitaminsand
mineralsareretained,naturalflavoursand
coloursareintensifiedandlessseasoning
canberequired.Asthemeatscookedin
apressurecookertendtobemoretender;
tougherandmostlycheaperyetflavourfilled
cutsofmeatscanbeusedsuchaschuck
steak.
HIGHPressureSetting is70kpa.Itis
suitableforawiderangeoffoods.
LOWPressureSetting is30kpa.Itismore
suitedtodelicatefoodslikechickenfillet,
fishandsomevegetables.
KEEPWARMSetting. Whencookingtimeis
completed,thePressureCookerautomatically
switchestotheKeepWarmsettingtoprevent
overcookingandtokeepyourcookedfood
warmuntilserving-perfectforbusyfamilies,
thoseontherunandthosewhoneedflexible
mealtimes.Thissettingisnothotenoughto
cook,andshouldonlybeusedtokeephot,
cookedfoodwarmforserving.
IdealMealstoPressureCook.
Soups,stocks,casseroles,sauces(e.g.pasta
sauces),meat,driedbeans(notsplitpeas),
rice,firmvegetables(beetroot,potatoes)and
desserts(suchaspudding,crèmecaramel).
Capacity. Whentheunitisusedonthe
PressureCookmenu,themaximumcapacity
touseistheMAXPCmarkingontheinside
ofthecookingpan.Theunitcannotgain
pressureandthereforecannotworkwithout
liquid.Usingwithoutliquidcanseverely
damagethemachine.
Note: The unit can not work without liquid.
Ensure a minimum of 250ml of liquid is used
inside the removable cooking pan.

Asthenamesuggests,mealsarenotcooked
underpressurebutarecookedoveralong
periodoftime.SlowCookingprovides
healthy,simpleandeconomicalcooking.
Itrequiresminimalsupervision,short
preparationtimesandquickcleanuptimes.
LOWSetting. Thisissuitableforsimmering
andslowcooking.
HIGHSetting. Thisisforfastercooking.
Typically1houronHIGH=approximately
2-2.5hoursonLOW.
KEEPWARMSetting. Whencookingtime
iscompleted,theAvivaautomatically
switchestotheKeepWarmsettingtoprevent
overcookingandtokeepyourcookedfood

Brown isthehighestheatsettingandcanbe

The1/5,2/5,3/5,4/5and2/3markingsare
handyguidestouseinyourrecipes.
Note: Except when cooking rice, never load
the cooking pan above the maximum ingredient
level line marked MAX PC on the inside of the
cooking pot.

2.Placethelidon,andlockbyrotatinganti-
clockwisetotheLOCKposition.
3.Usingthefingertab,flickthepressure
andsteamvalvetothe‘SEAL’position.
4.IfthemenuisnotsettoPressureCook,
setthecookingmenubyscrollingthrough
theMENUbuttonuntilalightappears
nexttoPressureonthecontrolpanel,and
HIGHisflashingintheLCDscreen.
5.ToselectthepressuresettingofLOW,
presstheMENUbutton,andLOWwill
flashintheLCDscreen.
6.Toselectthecookingtime,presstheTIME
button,andthenpressthe and
buttons,untilyourdesiredtimeappears
intheLCDscreen.Eachbuttonpress
willadjustthetimeby1minuteupto
20minutes,andincrementsof5mins
thereaftertoamaximumcookingtimeof
2hours.
Note:theminimumcookingtimeis2
minutes,andthemaximumcookingtimeis

7.OnceyouhavesetthedesiredMENUand
cookingTIMEsettings,pressSTART.
8.ThePressureCookerneedstogain
pressurebeforepressurecookingcan
commence.Whentheunitisgaining
pressure,‘Cooking’willflashinthe
LCDscreenandthetimewillnotcount
down.Whenpressurehasbeenreached,
‘Cooking’willstopflashingandthetime
willbegintocountdown.
9.Afterthesetcookingtimehaselapsed,
theunitwillbeepandwillautomatically
switchtotheKEEPWARMsetting.
TheLCDscreenwillthereforechangefrom
‘Cooking’to‘KeepWarm’.ThePressure
CookercanstayintheKeepWarmsetting
for4hours.
TIP:ThePressureCookingsettingsareinthe
CookingMenuSettingsTableonpage13.
NOTE: The unit can not work without liquid.

TheSlowCookmenudoesnotcookunder
pressure,butdoesneedthelidlocked
tocommencecooking.Itcookssimilar
tostandardslowcookersanduseslow
temperaturesandlongercookingtimesto
achievetender,flavoursomemeals.
PlacethePressureCookeronaflat,level
surface.
Plugintheunit.Theunitwillbeep,and
theindicatorlightsandtheLCDscreenwill
illuminate.ThePressureCookerwilldefault
tothePressureCookermenu,ontheHIGH
setting.‘Pressure’and‘HIGH’willflashon
thedisplay.
1.Placeyourfoodandliquidinsidethe
removablecookingpan.
Note:allfoodmustbecompletelycoveredby
liquidtoensureevencookingresults.
2.Placethelidon,andlockbyrotatinganti-
clockwisetotheLOCKposition.
3.Usingthefingertab,flickthepressure
andsteamvalvetothe‘RELEASE’
position.
4.IfthemenuisnotsettoSlowCook,set
thecookingmenubyscrollingthroughthe
MENUbuttonuntilalightappearsnext
to‘SlowCooker’onthecontrolpanel,and
HIGHisflashingintheLCDscreen.
5.ToselecttheslowcookersettingofLOW,
presstheMENUbutton,andLOWwill
flashintheLCDscreen.
6.Toselectthecookingtime,presstheTIME
button,andthenpressthe and
buttons,untilyourdesiredtimeappears
intheLCDscreen.Eachbuttonpress
willadjustthetimeby30minutestoa
maximumcookingtimeof9hours.
Note:theminimumcookingtimeis30
minutes,andthemaximumcookingtimeis
9hours.
7.OnceyouhavesetthedesiredMENUand
cookingTIMEsettings,pressSTART.
8.‘Cooking’willshowintheLCDscreenand
thetimewillbegintocountdown.(Note
thatintheSlowCookermenusetting,
theunitdoesnotcookusingpressurebut
workslikeastandardslowcooker.
9.Afterthesetcookingtimehaselapsed,
theunitwillbeepandwillautomatically
switchtotheKEEPWARMsetting.The
LCDscreenwillthereforechangefrom
‘Cooking’to‘KeepWarm’.ThePressure
CookercanstayintheKeepWarmsetting
for4hours.
Note: AstheSlowCookmenudoesnotcook
underpressure,youcanremovethelid
duringcookingtocheckyourslowcooking
progress.Onlyliftthelidifnecessaryasslow
cookingusesverylowtemperaturestocook,
sotheunitdoesnotrecoverlostheatquickly.

NOTE: The unit can not work without liquid.

levelcupmeasure.

cookedbrownrice(approximately)
2. Placethemeasuredriceinasieveand
washricethoroughlyundercoldwater.
Washuntilthewaterrunsclear.This
removesexcessstarchwhichhelpsto
achievefluffierrice,andpreventsrice
grainsstickingtothecookingpan.
Alternativelywashthericeinthecooking
pantwoorthreetimesuntilthewater
isclear,pouringoutthemilkywater
betweeneachrinse.
3. Ensurethecookingpaniscleananddry
beforeplacingitinsidethevessel.
4. Placethewashedriceinthecookingpan.
Addcoldwatertothecuplevelindicated
ontheinsideofthecookingpanoradd
thequantityofwaterspecifiedintherice
cookingchartsonpage19.Makesure
thericeonthebottomofthepaniseven
whenaddingthewater.
5. Placethelidon,andlockbyrotating
anti-clockwisetotheLOCKposition.
6. Usingthefingertab,flickthepressure
andsteamvalvetothe‘SEAL’position.
7. IfthemenuisnotsettoRice,setthe
cookingmenubyscrollingthroughthe
MENUbuttonuntilalightappearsnext
toRiceonthecontrolpanel.
8. Toselectthecookingtime,pressthe
TIMEbutton,andthenpressthe
and buttons,untilyourdesiredtime
appearsintheLCDscreen.Eachbutton
presswilladjustthetimeby1minute
uptoamaximumcookingtimeof40
minutes.UsetheRiceCookingCharts
belowtoviewyourcookingtimes.
Note:theminimumcookingtimeis2
minutes,andthemaximumcookingtimeis
40minutes.
9. OnceyouhavesetthedesiredMENUand
cookingTIMEsettings,pressSTART.
10.ThePressureCookerneedstogain
pressurebeforericecookingcan
commence.Whentheunitisgaining
pressure,‘Cooking’willflashinthe
LCDscreenandthetimewillnotcount
down.Whenpressurehasbeenreached,
‘Cooking’willstopflashingandthetime
willbegintocountdown.
11.Afterthesetcookingtimehaselapsed,
theunitwillbeepandwillautomatically
switchtotheKEEPWARMsetting.The
LCDscreenwillthereforechangefrom
‘Cooking’to‘KeepWarm’.ThePressure
CookercanstayinthericeKeepWarm
settingfor30minutes.
TIP: Donotkeepriceinthepanforextended
periodsoftimeonKeepWarmsettingasthe
ricebecomesdryandthequalitydeteriorates.
Usethesuppliedplasticspoontostirand
servetherice.Donotusemetalutensilsas
thesewillscratchthenon-stickcoating.
TIP:Asricegrainscanbedelicate,attheend
ofcookingwaituntilthepressurereleases
naturally,ratherthanusingtheQuickRelease
