About This Manual
This manual is written for professional system integrators and PC technicians. It
provides information for the installation and use of the SC808 1U chassis. Installa-
tion and maintenance should be performed by experienced technicians only.
Supermicro’s SC808 1U chassis features a unique and highly-optimized design
for dual-core Xeon platforms. The chassis is equipped with a 700W or 980Whigh
ef ciency power supply for superb power savings. High performance fans provide
ample optimized cooling for FB-DIMM memory modules and 4hot-swap drive bays
offers maximum storage capacity ina 1U form factor.
This document lists compatible parts available when this document was published.

2-1 Overview
This chapter provides a quick setup checklistto getyour chassis up and running.
Following the steps inorder givenshould enable you to have your chassis setup and
operationalwithina minimalamount of time. This quick setup assumes thatyou
are anexperiencedtechnician, famailiar with common concepts and terminology.
2-2 Warnings and Precautions
You should inspect the boxthe chassis was shippedinand note ifitwas damaged
inany way. If the chassis itself shows damage,le a damage claimwith carrier
whodeliveredyour system.
Decide on a suitable location for the rack unitthatwill hold thatchassis. It should
be situatedina clean, dust-free area thatis well venilated. Avoidareas where heat,
electricalnoise and eletromagneticelds are generated.
You will alsoneeditplacednear atleastone groundedpower outlet. Whencon g-
ured, the SC808 chassis includes one power supply.
2-3 Preparingfor Setup
The SC808 Chassis includes a setof railassemblies,including mounting brackets
and mounting screws you will needto install the systems into the rack. Please read
this manualinits entirety before you beginthe installation procedure.
2-4 Electrical SafetyPrecautions
Basicelectricalsafety precautions should be followedto protect yourself from harm
and the SC808 from damage:
lBeaware of the locations of the power on/off switch on the chassis as well
as the room’s emergency power-off switch,disconnection switch or electri-

caloutlet. If anelectricalaccident occurs,you canthenquickly remove
power from the system.
lDo not workalone whenworking with high voltage components.
lPower should always be disconnectedfrom the systemwhenremoving or
installing mainsystemcomponents,such as the serverboard, memorymod-
ules and the DVD-ROM and floppy drives (not necessaryfor hot swappable
drives). Whendisconnecting power,you should rstpower down the
systemwith the operating systemand thenunplug the power cords from all
the power supply modules inthe system.
lWhenworking around exposedelectricalcircuits,another person whois fa-
miliar with the power-off controls should be nearby to switch off the power,
ifnecessary.
lUse only one hand whenworking with powered-on electricalequipment.
This is to avoidmaking a complete circuit, which will cause electricalshock.
Use extreme caution whenusing metaltools,which caneasily damage any
electricalcomponents or circuitboards theycome into contact with.
lDo not use mats designedto decrease electrostaticdischarge as protection
from electricalshock. Instead, use rubber mats thathave beenspecically
designedas electricalinsulators.
lThe power supply power cordmustinclude a grounding plug and mustbe
pluggedinto groundedelectricaloutlets.
lServerboardBattery: CAUTION - There is a danger of explosion ifthe
onboardbatteryis installedupside down, which will reverse its polarities
This batterymustbe replacedonly with the same or anequivalent type
recommendedby the manufacturer. Dispose of usedbatteries according to
the manufacturer’s instructions.
lDVD-ROM Laser:CAUTION - this server mayhave come equippedwith a
DVD-ROM drive. Toprevent direct exposure to the laser beamand hazard-
ous radiation exposure,do not openthe enclosure or use the unitinany
unconventionalway.

lKeepthe area around the chassis cleanand free of clutter.

lPlace the chassis top cover and any systemcomponents thathave been
removedawayfrom the systemor on a table sothattheywon’taccidentally
be steppedon.
lWhile working on the system, do not wear loose clothing such as neckties
and unbuttonedshirtsleeves,which cancome into contact with electrical
circuits or be pulledinto a cooling fan.
lRemove any jewelryor metalobjects from your body, which are excellent
metalconductors thatcancreate shortcircuits and harmyou iftheycome
into contact with printedcircuitboards or areas where power is present.
lAfter accessing the inside of the system, close the systemback up and
secure itto the rack unitwith the retention screws after ensuring thatall
connections have beenmade.
2-6 System Safety
Electrostaticdischarge (ESD) is generatedby two objects with different electrical
charges coming into contact with each other. Anelectricaldischarge is createdto
neutralize this difference,which candamage electroniccomponents and printed
circuitboards. The following measures are generally suf cient to neutralize this
difference before contact is made to protect your equipment from ESD:
lDo not use mats designedto decrease electrostaticdischarge as protection
from electricalshock. Instead, use rubber mats thathave beenspecically
designedas electricalinsulators.
lUse a groundedwriststrapdesignedto prevent staticdischarge.
lKeepall components and printedcircuitboards (PCBs) intheir antistatic
bags untilready for use.
lTouch a groundedmetalobject before removing any boardfrom its anti-
staticbag.
lDo not letcomponents or PCBs come into contact with your clothing, which
mayretaina charge evenifyou are wearing a wriststrap.
lHandle a boardby its edges only;do not touch its components,peripheral
chips,memorymodules or contacts.
lWhenhandling chips or modules,avoidtouching their pins.

lPut the serverboardand peripherals back into their antistaticbags when
not inuse.
lFor grounding purposes,make sure your computer chassis provides excel-
lent conductivity betweenthe power supply, the case,the mounting fasten-
ers and the serverboard.

Each SC808 chassis comes with a 1U backplane. For more information regarding

Fans
The SC808 chassis accepts sixsystemfans . Systemfans for SC808 chassis are
poweredfrom the serverboard. These fans are 1U high and are poweredby 3-pin
connectors.
Mounting Rails
The SC808 canbe placedina rack for secure storage and use. Tosetup your
rack, follow the step-by-stepinstructions includedinthis manual.

Power Supply
Each SC808 chassis modelincludes a high-ef ciency power supply ratedat980
Watts. In the unlikely event your power supply fails,replacement is simple and
canbe done without tools.
Air Shroud
The SC808 chassis includes two mylar air shrouds thatfunnelair directly to where
itis needed.. Always use the air shroud includedwith your chassis.

4-1 Overview
There are severalLEDs on the control paneland drive carriers to keepyoucon-
stantly informedof the overall status of the system. SC808 models include two
front panels thatcontrol two semi-independent systesm.
This chapter explains the meanings of all LEDindicators and the appropriate re-
sponse you mayneedto take.

4-2 Control Panel Buttons
There are two push-buttons locatedon the front of the chassis. These are (in
order from left to right) a resetbutton and a power on/off button.
l Reset:The resetbutton is usedto reboot the system.
l Power: The mainpower switch is usedto apply or remove power from
the power supply to the server system. Turning off systempower with this but-
ton removes the mainpower but keeps standbypower suppliedto the system.
Therefore,you mustunplug systembefore servicing.
4-3 Control Panel LEDs
The control panellocatedon the front of the SC808 chassis has ve LEDs. These
LEDs provide you with criticalinformation relatedto different parts of the system.
This section explains whateach LEDindicates whenilluminatedand any corrective
action you mayneedto take.
lOverheat/Fan Fail: Whenthis LEDflashes itindicates a fanfailure. When
continuously on (not flashing) itindicates anoverheatcondition, which maybe
causedby cables obstructing the airflow inthe systemor the ambient roomtem-
perature being too warm. Check the routing of the cables and make sure all fans
are present and operating normally. You shouldalsocheck to make sure thatthe
chassis covers are installed. Finally, verify thatthe heatsinks are installedproperly.
This LEDwill remainflashing or on as longas the temperature is too high or a fan
does not workcorrectly.
