Ifthe equipmentisused inamannernotspecified byTechne the protection provided bythe
equipmenttothe Operatormaybe impaired.
AllTechne unitshavebeen designed toconformtointernational safetyrequirementsand are
fitted withan overtemperaturecutout. Onsomemodels,the cutoutisadjustableand shouldbe
set tosuitthe application.Onallothermodelsthe cutout ispreset toprotectthe unit.
Ifasafetyproblemshouldbe encountered,the unitshouldbe switched off and isolated fromthe
mainselectricitysupply.
INSTALLATION
ThisTechne IndustrialFluidised Bath(IFB)isdesigned tobe operated asapermanently
connected pieceofequipmentand mustbe installed byafullyqualified electrician with
experienceofinstalling 3phaseequipment.
The IFBmustbe installed withan appropriatelyrated switchand/orcircuitbreakerincluded inthe
building installation.
The switchorcircuitbreakershouldbeincloseproximitytothe IFBand withineasyreachof the
operator.
The switchorcircuitbreakershouldalsobe clearlymarked asthe disconnecting deviceforthe
IFB.
The supplywiring shouldbe ofaspecification suitableforthe ratingsindicated on the IFBrating
plate;inaddition itshouldalsocomplywithlocal,nationaland internationalstandardswhere
applicable.
Asevery installation isunique,itisnotpossibletogivedetailed instruction regarding anydrilling
ofthe cabinet baseplatethat maybe required forrouting ofthe supplycable. However, the cable
mustbe adequatelysecuredwithasuitablyapproved cablegland atthe pointitentersthe
cabinet. Itisalsoarequirementthatthe earthconductoristerminated insuchawaythatitis
longerthan the 3phaseconductorsand alsolongerthanthe neutralconductor.Thisistoprevent,
inthe caseofthe supplycablebecoming insecure,theearthconductordisconnecting beforethe
other4conductors.

AFTERUSE
When you havefinished heating samples, rememberthat partsofthe unit –the tubes, blocksand
associated accessories–maybe veryhot. Takethe precautionslisted earlier.
GUARANTEE
The unitisguaranteed againstanydefectinmaterialorworkmanshipforthe period specified on
the enclosedguaranteecard.Thisperiod isfromthe dateofpurchase,and withinthisperiod all
defectivepartswillbe replaced free of charge provided that the defect isnotthe resultofmisuse,
accident ornegligence. Servicing underthisguarantee shouldbe obtained fromthe supplier.
Notwithstanding the description and specification(s)ofthe unitscontained inthe Operator’s
Manual,Techne herebyreservesthe righttomakesuchchangesasitseesfittothe unitsorto
anycomponent ofthe units.
ThisManualhasbeen prepared solelyforthe convenienceofTechne customersand nothing in
thisInstruction Bookshall be taken asawarranty,condition orrepresentation concerning the

1. Cleaning
Beforecleaning yourunit ALWAYS disconnect itfromthe powersupplyandallowit tocoolbelow
50°C.
Yourunitcan be cleaned bywiping withadampsoapycloth.Careshouldbe exercised toprevent
waterfromrunning inside the unit.Do notuseabrasivecleaners.
2. Overtemperature cutout
Inthe event of no heaterpower, check the mainsplug and lead. Repeated operation ofthe cutout
indicatesaseriousfault: you mayneed toreturnthe unittoyoursupplierforrepair.
3. Fuses
Yourunitisprotected byfuses.Theseshouldonlybe changed bysuitablyqualified personnel.If
the fusesblowpersistently, aseriousfaultisindicated and you mayneed toreturnthe unittoyour
supplierforrepair.

l’appareilou àraccorder.
2.Avantde brancherl’appareil,vérifiezlatension requiseindiquée surlaplaque d’identification.
Raccordezlecâbleélectrique àlapriseappropriée envousreportantau tableau ci-dessous.Il
est importantque l’appareilsoitreliéàlaterrepourassurerlaprotection électrique requise.

1. Nettoyage
Avantde nettoyerl’appareil,assurez-vousTOUJOURSque lecâbled’alimentation est
déconnectéet laissezlatempératureredescendreen dessousde 50 °C.
Utilisezun chiffon imprégné d’eau savonneusepournettoyerl’appareil.Veillezàne pasintroduire
d’eau dansl’appareil.N’utilisezpasde produitsabrasifs.
2. Coupe-circuitd’excès detempérature
•Enl’absencede puissancedechauffe,vérifiezlapriseetlecâbled’alimentation puisréglezla
commande du coupe-circuit(sivotreappareilest dotéde cemécanisme).

3. Fusibles

1.AlleTechne Gerätewerden miteinemStromanschlußkabelgeliefert.Diesesistentwederfest
mitdemGerät verbunden oderzumEinstecken.
2.Vergleichen Sie,ob dieSpannung IhrerStromversorgung mitden Angaben aufdem
TypenschilddesGeräteübereinstimmen.Verbinden SiedasStromanschlußkabel miteiner
geeigneten Stromversorgung gemäßdernächstehenden Tabelle.

BevorSieIhrGerätreinigen, sollten Sie
• zuerst den Netzsteckerziehen.
• dasGerät unter50°Cabkühlen lassen.
EinfeuchtesTuchmitSeifenlösung reinigtIhrGerätambesten.Achten Siedarauf,daßkein
WasserindasGerätgelangt.Verwenden Siekeine Scheuermittel.

2. Übertemperaturabschalter
•DerÜbertemperaturschutzisteinempfindlichesmechanischesTeil.Schon eine Erschütterung
kann diesen auslösen.
•FallsdieHeizung nichtfunktioniert,überprüfen SiezuerstNetzsteckerundKabel.Setzen Sie
dann denÜbertemperaturabschalter(an derRückseitedesGerätes)wiederzurück,indemSie
den roten Knopfeinmal biszumAnschlag drücken.
•Wenn derÜbertemperaturabschalterwiederholtauslöst, liegteingrößererDefektvor.Das
GerätmußzurReparaturan Ihren Lieferanteneingesandt werden.
3. Sicherungen
DieStromzuleitung istdurcheinoderzweiSicherungen geschützt. Diesesollten nurdurch
qualifiziertesFachpersonalausgetauschtwerden.Wenn dieSicherung wiederholtdurchbrennt,
liegteingrößererDefektvor.DasGerätmußzurReparaturan Ihren Lieferanten eingesandt
werden.

approximately8hoursat 90°Cpriortooperation atelevated temperatures.
NEVERADD COLD ORDAMP ALUMINATO AHOT BATHAS THISWILL ALSOCAUSE
VIOLENTFLUIDISATIONWHICH CANBE DANGEROUS.Allowthe bathtocoolthen add the
freshalumina.Ifthisfreshalumina isalarge portion of the charge then dry the wholecharge as
above.
FUME EXTRACTION
When used forprocessing itemswhichmayemittoxicorinflammablefumes,itisessentialthat
an adequatefumeextraction systembe installed.Theextraction systemmustbe correctlysized
toensurethat anytoxicfumesareremoved fromthe working environment.
Toeliminatethe riskofspontaneousignition,the concentration ofinflammablefumesabovethe
bathand withinthe exhaust duct work must be kept belowthe lowerexplosivelimit.
General Description
The fluidised bathemploysthe principleoffluidisation ofamass offinelydivided inert particlesby
meansofan upwardflowofgas.Astateoffluidisationisachieved when the individualparticles
becomemicroscopicallyseparated fromeachotherbythe moving gas.This“fluidisation bed”of
particleshasunusualpropertieswhichdiffermarkedlyfromeitherthoseofthe gasorthoseofthe
solidparticles.Instead,the fluidised bed behavesremarkablylikeliquid,exhibiting characteristics
whichgenerallyattributetoaliquidstate.Forexample,the fluidised bed can becomeagitated
and bubbled;italwaysseeks acommon level; materialsof lessdensitywillfloatwhilethosewith
densitiesgreaterthan the equivalent fluidised bed densitywillsink;and, most important,the heat
transfercharacteristicsbetween the fluidised bed andasolidinterfacecan havean efficiency
approaching that of an agitated liquid.
Inaddition,the fluidised solidphasehasamostunusualphysicalbehaviour,inthatitsbasic
characteristicschange onlyslightlyoververy large temperatureranges;ithasno melting point
and no boiling point. The lowest temperatureavailableisthe liquefaction point ofthe gasusedfor
fluidisation,whilethe high temperaturelevelisthe usabletemperatureofthe inertsolids.Various
metaloxideswithallowabletemperaturesofover1700°Carereadilyavailable.The metaloxide
bedscommonlyused, (eg. aluminiumoxide)arenon-flammable,non-explosiveand non toxic.

The mostcommonlyused fluidising gasisordinary compressed airobtained fromabloweror
compressor.Forsituationswhereanonoxidising atmosphereisrequired,cracked gascanbe
employed withasilicon carbide bed.
The unique characteristicofgasfluidised particlesisthe relativelyhigh rateofheat transferwhich
yieldshighlyisothermalconditions,aswell asexcellentheattransfertosolidsurfaces.This
characteristicisdue tothe turbulentmotion and rapidcirculation rateofthe solidparticlesin
conjunction withthe extremelyhigh solidgasinterfacearea.Therefore,despitethe factthatgas
solidinterfacesnormallyyieldlowheat transfercoefficientsand the solidsnormallyused havelow
thermalconductivities,the overallheattransfercharacteristicsoffluidized particlesapproach
thoseofaliquid.
The combination ofexcellentheattransfercharacteristicsand high heatcapacityareidealfor
attaining rapidstabilisation atan isothermalcondition.Techne industrialfluidised bathsuse
aluminiumoxide asthe fluidising medium.Theyhavebeendesigned toremoveplasticresidue
fromextruderand moulding machine tools,paintbuildup frompaintfixtures,and carryout
variousheat treatmentprocesses.
The fluidised bed ishousedinastainless steelcontainer.The containerissurroundedbya
radiantfurnacewhichisenclosed withinthermal insulation.The innerassemblyishoused ina
rectangularoutercase. Thereisalsoan electricaland pneumaticcontrol console.
The following controloptionsareavailable:
•Amanualcontrol systemwhichconsistsofatemperaturecontroller,and amanually
adjustablefluidising aircontrolvalves.Supplied asstandardwiththis,and allother
options,isan airpressureregulatorand filterassembly.During operation the correct
fluidising airflowratemustbe determined byvisuallyinspecting the surfaceofthe
fluidised bath.When the fluidised bathisheated theairwithinthe bathexpands;itis
thereforenecessary todecreasethe amount ofairsupplied tothe bathduring the heat up
period toensurethatthe bathiscorrectlyfluidised at all times.
•Amodified manualcontrolsystemisavailablewhichisfitted withairflowmeters.Inthis
case,the correctleveloffluidisation maybe setbyadjusting the airflowratein
accordancewiththe valvesrecommended withinthismanualorthosegained by
experiencewithindividualinstallations.The airflowratemuststillbe manuallyadjusted
during the heatup period.Anon standardversion ofthisindustrialfluidised bathis
availableforapplicationswherecontinued treatmentofcomponentscontaminated by
PVCand otherhalogenated polymersisenvisaged.Thisversion ismanufactured from
materialsthatresistthe effectsofcorrosion whichareexperienced when processing the
abovepolymers.
The compressed airsupplytothe fluidised bathmustbe keptclean,dry,and free fromoil. When
usedforprocessing itemswhichmayemittoxicorinflammablefumesitisessentialthatan
adequatefumeextraction systembe installed.The extraction systemmustbe correctlysized to
ensurethatanytoxicfumesareremoved fromthe working environment. Toeliminatethe riskof
spontaneousignition the concentration ofinflammablefumesabovethe bathand withinthe
exhaustductwork mustbe keptbelowthe lowerexplosivelimit. Alatersection ofthismanual
detailsthe variousfumetreatmentequipment that isavailable,and howitshouldbe installed and

Installation
•Mountthe fluidised bathinthe position whereitistobe used.It isimportanttoensure
thatthe bathislevel,otherwiseitwill fluidiseincorrectly.Thiswilllead tothe formation of
large temperaturegradientsacrossthe bathwhichresultsinprematureheaterfailureand
possibledamage tothe porousplateand innercontainerassemblies.
•Connectanyassociated fumetreatmentequipmenttothe fluidised batheffluentgas
extract duct.See section whichfollowson FumeCleaning.
•Check thatthe heaterisolation resistance(measured fromthe load side ofthe solidstate
relay,toearth)isatleast2.5Mohmbeforeconnecting the electricalcircuittothe
electricalsupply.See attached circuitdiagramforconnection detailsand the unitrating
platefordetailsof the electricalsupplyrequired.
•The compressed airsupplytothe fluidised bathmust be clean,dry, and free fromoil.
