Instructions for use
Important: Before using the coffeemaker for the first time, or if the coffeemaker has not been used for a long time,
it is advisable to run the coffeemaker once using only cold water.
1. Make sure the machine is switched off, insert the outlet pipe in the rubber gasket on the water reservoir and
adjust the pipe to the right position.
2. Fill the water reservoir with cold water and put the lid on to prevent dust from entering the reservoir.
3. Place a no. 4 filter in the filter holder and fill it with the required amount of ground coffee. One level
measuring scoop of coffee is sufficient for ¼ litre of water (2 cups).
Place the lid on the filter holder to ensure that the temperature remains constant.
4. Place the filter holder on the filter bracket and place the glass pot, with lid, onto the hotplate directly under
the filter holder.
Place the empty glass pot with filter (K 742/K 743) onto the hotplate.
5. Turn the switch for the hotplate (if present) to the highest setting and switch the machine on by pressing the
on/off switch.
(the switch lights will now be on)
6. As soon as the water has flowed through the machine, the main heating element will
switch off. This means that the machine will only draw power for the hotplate.
7. Coffee tastes best right after it has been made. Do not wait too long before serving.
If you would like to keep smaller amounts of coffee warm for a brief period, it is best to set the hotplate to ¾
power (the light will now be off) so that the coffee is kept at the right temperature.
8. Pour the coffee into a thermos carafe if you would like to keep it for a longer period of time. This will
preserve the taste and aroma.
9. When the coffeemaker is not in use, switch it off by pressing the on/off switch (the light will now be off).
Never use the hotplate to heat up coffee or other liquids. Rinse the pot well with water after use. Always
remove the coffee filter from the holder after use.
10. The filter holder for models KBG is equipped with a drip-stop system. The filter holder will close
automatically if the coffee pot is removed while coffee is being made. For this reason, it is always important
to make sure that the pot and the filter holder are in the right position while you are making coffee.
Automatic
These models have a time switch (“Automatic”), which switches the coffeemaker off automatically after 2
hours.
Also the power of the hotplate is controlled automatically.
Remark:
Before starting the brewing it is advisable to operate the switch once more, in order to reset the timer switch
to prevent turning off during the brewing process.
Tips for optimum use of the coffeemaker
1. When inserting the coffee filter, press it firmly against the sides of the filter holder.
2. When making smaller amounts of coffee (1-2 cups), it is best to set the switch to the highest
setting with an empty coffee pot on the hotplate, so that it will heat up sufficiently while the
machine is being filled with coffee and water. This will allow the coffee to stay hot longer.
3. The filter holder for the models equipped with a manual drip-stop system has 3 settings. Fully
open (normal amounts of coffee), half-open (small amounts of coffee), and closed (drip-stop).
With these models, remember to open the slide in the filter holder before you make coffee.
4. Extra accessories may be purchased to use the machine to make tea. These include a pot, filter
holder with special insert for tea leaves, and two lids. Only available for use with model KBG.
Maintenance
Before cleaning, remove the plug from the socket. Clean the appliance regularly with a damp (NOT WET)
cloth and wipe dry. Never submerge the appliance in water.
Other parts such as the pot, filter holder and lids may be cleaned in a normal fashion.
Tap water may be harder (contains more calcium) in some regions than in others. If you live in such an
area, it is best to descale the machine regularly.

Descaling the coffeemaker.
1. Fill the water reservoir with a half litre of water and a half litre of household vinegar.
2. Switch the machine on and wait until all of the liquid has flowed into the pot.
3. Repeat the process two or three times with clean water in order to clean the machine.
Important:
If the scale indicator (if present) is flashing, this means that the machine must be descaled immediately. If
the machine is not equipped with a scale indicator it must be descaled if it starts to make a humming noise
while coffee is being made, or if the riser pipe in the cold water reservoir is no longer transparent.
For both kinds of warning, the coffee making process will be interrupted at intervals.
If this is the case, the machine must be thoroughly descaled. The water and household vinegar must
remain in the machine without allowing them to drip through for at least half an hour (switch the machine
off). Now start the machine and allow the liquid to run through twice.
Anti-frost protection
1. Turn the machine off and remove the plug from the socket.
2. Remove the outlet pipe.
3. Empty the machine by holding it upside down over the sink.
4. Replace the outlet pipe before using the machine again.
Environmental recommendations
1. You can discard the filter and the coffee grounds by disposing of them in the organic waste
container or the compost heap. If you do not have a compost heap, you can dispose of filters and
grounds with the normal household waste.
2. For environmental reasons, broken coffeemakers should be disposed of at a recycling station or
returned to the supplier.
The coffeemaker can be disassembled and the individual parts recycled.
