Teledyne Tekmar (TEKMAR) warrants this product to be free from defects in material and workmanship under normal
use and care for a period of twelve (12) months from the date of initial installation or eighteen (18) months from the
date of invoice, whichever period comes rst. Consumables, spare parts, accessories, and services are warranted for
ninety (90) days from the date of shipment or completion of the services. If the Buyer identies any defects in material
or workmanship, Buyer will promptly notify TEKMAR in writing of the defective goods and the specic nature of the
defect. Prior to placing a service request, Buyer may be required to run diagnostic tests as determined by TEKMAR. If
warranty service is rendered for a malfunction caused by application contamination, devices not manufactured by
TEKMAR, defective gases or samples, or if warranty service eorts to isolate the cause of a malfunction are increased
as a result of the aforementioned, TEKMAR will charge the Buyer on a time and material basis for additional services.
TEKMAR at its sole discretion will repair or replace any such goods found by TEKMAR to be defective. If TEKMAR
authorizes the return of defective goods, Buyer will return the defective goods, transportation and insurance prepaid,
in accordance with instructions issued by TEKMAR including a Return Authorizations (RMA) number. TEKMAR’s
warranty does not apply to any goods that have been subjected to improper installation, misuse, alternation, repair,
neglect, accident, inundation, re, or the like. All replacements or repairs necessitated by inadequate maintenance,
normal wear and usage, unsuitable power sources, unsuitable environmental conditions, accident, misuse, user
induced contamination, improper installation, modication, repair, storage or handling, or any other cause not the
fault of TEKMAR are not covered by this limited warranty, and shall be at Buyer’s expense. This warranty specically
excludes the following parts: supply items and mechanical wear parts such as bearings, seals, traps, trap heaters,
syringes, septa, glassware, ttings, frits, batteries, fuses and light bulbs. TEKMAR shall not be obligated to pay any costs
or charges incurred by the Buyer or any other party except as may be agreed upon in writing in advance by an
authorized TEKMAR representative. All costs of dismantling, reinstallation and freight and the time and expense of
TEKMAR’s personnel for site travel and diagnosis under this limited warranty clause shall be borne by the Buyer unless
accepted in writing by TEKMAR. Goods repaired and parts replaced during the warranty period shall be in warranty for
the remainder of the original warranty period, or ninety (90) days, whichever is longer.
This warranty, including remedies, is exclusive and is in lieu of any and all other warranties, express or implied. No
warranty of merchantability or tness for a particular purpose is intended or given. TEKMAR shall not be liable for any
indirect or consequential damages. In the case of goods other than those of TEKMAR’s own manufacture, TEKMAR
makes no warranties, express, statutory or implied, including the implied warranties of merchantability, freedom from
patent infringement and tness for a particular purpose. Such goods shall carry only the warranty extended by the
original manufacturer of such goods.
This warranty applies to TEKMAR manufactured products purchased directly from TEKMAR. Products purchased
through other sources may have other terms and conditions for a warranty program. Please refer to the original source
of purchase for warranty details.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ THIS PAGE BEFORE PROCEEDING!
Teledyne Tekmar designs, manufactures, and tests its products to meet many national and international standards.
The Torch is a sophisticated technical product and must be properly installed, used, and maintained to ensure that it
operates within normal specications. You must adhere to and integrate the following instructions into your safety
program when installing, using, and maintaining the Torch. Failure to follow the proper instructions may invalidate
the warranty.
• Read all instructions prior to installing, operating, and servicing the product. Follow all warnings, cautions, and
instructions marked on, and supplied with the product and this manual. If you do not understand any of the
instructions, contact your Teledyne Tekmar representative for clarication.
• Educate your personnel in the proper installation, operation, and maintenance of the product. Only qualied
personnel should install, operate, update, program, and maintain the product.
• Install your equipment as specied in Chapter 2: Installation & Setup of this manual and according to applicable
local and national codes. Connect all products to the proper electrical and pressure sources.
• Only trained service personnel should replace blown fuses, and only after identifying and correcting the problem
which caused the fuse(s) to blow. For continued protection, replace only with same type and fuse rating of fuse.
• When replacement parts are required, ensure that qualied individuals use replacement parts specied by
Teledyne Tekmar. Unauthorized parts and products can aect the product’s performance and jeopardize safety.
Using look-alike substitutions may result in re, electrical hazards, or improper operation.
Ensure that all equipment doors are closed and protective covers are in place (except when maintenance is being
performed by qualied personnel) to prevent electrical shock and personal injury.

If the equipment is used in a manner not specied herein,
the protection provided by the equipment may be impaired!
Lift and position the Torch by the base only. Never use the Torch front cover, Autosampler
Mechanism (ASM) arm, glassware, or any other external component for lifting or positioning
support. Injury or damage to the Torch may occur if the unit is not properly lifted or
positioned. To prevent damage to and/or abnormal variation in the infrared detector:
• Maintain a consistent temperature environment.
• Avoid exposing the Torch to corrosive or combustible gas.
• Do not place the Torch near high frequency furnaces or other sources of EMI
(electromagnetic interference). If this situation is unavoidable, use a separate power line.
Route Tygon tubing drain lines to slope downward only. Do not extend tubing into the
waste bottle more than 3 to 5” (7.6 to 12.7cm). Failure to follow these directions may result in
improper drainage of the Torch.
Please be aware that if Torch, the Nitrogen Module, its components, and/or accessories are
used in a manner not specied by Tekmar, protection by the equipment may be impaired.
The TN must only be lifted and positioned from beneath its base. Failure to heed this warning
may result in bodily injury, or damage to the TN.
Running an improperly setup method may damage the Torch. Setting up a new method
should be performed by personnel who are properly trained, knowledgeable, and well
acquainted with the Torch.
Do not plug the Torch into an extension cord. An extension cord may overheat and cause a re.
Always replace fuses with the same type and rating of fuse.
NEVER use hydrogen or other ammable gas with the Torch. Follow the manufacturer’s
directions for safe handling of gas and chemicals. Also refer to the Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for information on specic chemicals.
Acid will burn eyes and skin. To prevent injury, wear safety glasses and skin protection
when using these chemicals. Refer to their MSDS for detailed information.
To avoid injury to yourself or damage to the Torch, do not exceed the recommended pressure
settings. Observe safety regulations when handling pressurized gas. For more information
see Matheson Gases Data Book (available from the Matheson Company, East Rutherford, New
Jersey)
Sample and associated waste may contain hazardous and toxic substances. Follow the
proper safety and health practices. Also, know regulatory limitations before using or disposing
of chemicals.

TOC THEORY
Total organic carbon (TOC) analysis grew from the need to analyze waste water and municipal water for organic
matter. The need to protect it and establish criteria for screening and measuring contaminant levels was recognized
when Congress enacted the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) in 1976. This act requires operators
of waste disposal sites to monitor their groundwater on a quarterly basis for organic carbon levels and organic
halide levels.
TOC analyzers are also widely used in monitoring the quality of process water in the semiconductor and
pharmaceutical industries. Because organic material can cause contamination, TOC analysis is also performed to
protect process equipment such as boilers, turbines, and purication devices. Furthermore, TOC levels in solids such
as soils, clays and sediments are of increasing interest.
Using safe and proven High Temperature Combustion (HTC), oxidation of carbonaceous material to carbon
dioxide followed by Non-Dispersive Infrared (NDIR) detection of the CO2product, the Torch is sensitive from
50ppbC - 30,000ppmC. Varieties of carbon can be independently determined by selecting a pre-dened instrument
method. These include:
• Total Carbon (TC)
• Inorganic Carbon (IC)
• Total Organic Carbon (TOC = TC-IC)
• Non-Purgable Organic Carbon (NPOC or TOC by sparging)

The oxidation products are swept into the NDIR detector, which is CO2selective. The exit valve from the NDIR is
closed to allow the detector to become pressurized. Once the gases in the detector have reached equilibrium, the
concentration of CO2is analyzed. This pressurization of the sample gas stream in the NDIR, a patent-pending
technique, allows for increased sensitivity and precision by measuring the entirety of the oxidation products of the
sample in one reading, compared to ow-through technology. The output signal is proportional to the concentration
of CO2, created from the oxidation of the sample, in the carrier gas. The PC workstation uses the TOC TeklinkTM software
to control the above sequence of operations, process the detector signal, and report the nal concentration of the
sample based on linearized, multi-point calibration data.
TOC OVERVIEW
TOC analyzers can measure:
• Total Carbon (TC)
• Total Organic Carbon (TOC)
• Inorganic Carbon (IC)
• Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon (NPOC)
TOC measurement involves:
• Oxidizing organic carbon in a sample.
• Detecting and quantifying the oxidized carbon (CO2).
• Presenting the results in units of mass of carbon per volume of sample.
Total Carbon (TC) – The measure of all the carbon in the sample, both inorganic and organic, as a single parameter.
Generally, the measurement is made by placing the sample directly into the analyzer without pretreatment.
Total Organic Carbon (TOC) - The sum of all the organic carbon in the sample.
Direct TOC Measurement – In the direct approach, IC is rst removed by acidication and sparging and the
remaining carbon is measured as TOC. IC and POC are not recovered for further analysis in this approach. However,
since POC generally represents 1% or less of total carbon in a sample, it is considered negligible.
TOC Measurement by Dierence - This approach requires two analyses: one to measure TC, and one to measure IC.
The dierence between these two measurements is precisely TOC.
TOC Measurement by Sum - This approach measures NPOC and POC. The sum of these measurements is
precisely TOC.
Inorganic Carbon (IC) - Includes carbonate, bicarbonate, and dissolved carbon dioxide. IC is analyzed in liquid samples
by acidifying with an inorganic acid to pH 3 or lower, and then sparging with a stream of inert gas. The acidication
converts carbonates and bicarbonates to carbon dioxide, which is then removed along with dissolved CO2by the gas
stream, and measured to provide an IC value.
NDIR PRESSURIZATION OVERVIEW
Pressurized detection, or static read, is a technique used for concentrating the CO2produced by the oxidation of the
sample. The technique can be used for both qualitative and quantitative analysis. In this section the basics of the
pressurization technique will be described.
Using the traditional NDIR technology, these measurements are performed by oxidation of the specic carbon
component by high temperature combustion to create CO2, which is swept through an NDIR detector. In this
technique, the adsorption of the infrared light is measured over time as the CO2is swept through the detector. The
resulting measurement correlates to a peak, which can be integrated and correlated to a concentration.

The use of a pressurized detection scheme, or static read, allows for the specic carbon component to be oxidized
and the resultant carbon dioxide swept into the detector using a non-interfering, inert gas, which is metered by a
Mass Flow Controller (MFC). A valve located at the outlet of the detector prevents the escape of any of the CO2from
the detector. A single measurement can be made to determine the amount of CO2in the detector cell. The reading
correlates directly to the concentration of the carbon contribution from the sample.
An inherent advantage of this technique is that all of the CO2is in the cell at the same time for the detector
measurement. With all of the CO2in the cell, the sensitivity of the analysis is signicantly increased.
Another advantage of this application is that there is one measurement made that represents the concentration of
CO2in the cell versus multiple measurements made in ow-through designs over time that result in a peak. Since this
technique is a static read, it eliminates the inherent error associated with time delays between measurements with
traditional ow through technology. These time delays add error to the integration of the CO2peak. The
elimination of this error allows for lower detection limits and increased precision.
The static read of the detector is accomplished by pressurizing the detector cell with carrier gas, which contains the
CO2from the oxidized sample. The pressure required for static read is generally between 30-60psig (2.1-4.1bar).
Teledyne Tekmar’s recommended pressurization setting is 50psig (3.4bar).
WHAT IS THE TORCH?
The Torch is a state-of-the-art analytical instrument designed to detect, with accuracy, carbon content in water and
other materials down to the ppb level. Chemistries and sample processing with Windows-driven PC control, provides
a fast, reliable test of the quality of water and solutions. It uses a High Temperature Combustion Furnace, which is an
improved version of the Apollo 9000 furnace, and a pressurized NDIR detector, which is a relatively new technology
(patent pending) that allows a degree of sensitivity previously unattainable.

SYRINGE PUMPER AND 7PORT VALVE
The Syringe Pumper is a precision measuring instrument
that aspirates and dispenses uid. The Syringe Pumper
contains electronics, syringe, and stepper motors that
drive a valve actuator and a syringe plunger. The
electronics control the motors and communication
between the Syringe Pumper and micro controller.
The Syringe Pumper can dispense 100μL to 2.0mL
(±1%) of sample.
The Syringe Pumper turns a 7-port Valve. To ensure an
airtight seal, each port on the valve is tted with a valve
washer, installed from the factory, before the insertion of
the appropriate tubing tting.

IC SPARGER
The IC Sparger is a glass vessel that holds the sample
while the Torch:
• Purges the sample of IC
• Prepares the sample for TOC analysis.
After the addition of acid, carrier gas ows through the
sparger, removing the IC from the sample. The Torch
detects IC in the IC mode or sends it to vent while in the
TOC mode.
COMBUSTION FURNACE
The combustion furnace provides the high temperature
necessary to oxidize the carbon in the sample to CO2 . It
holds the quartz combustion tube between the bottom
connector and the injection port at the top. O-rings
provide gas-tight seals at each end. The combustion tube
contains a bed of proprietary catalyst that promotes
oxidation of organics. The top cap provides the interface
for the sample injection and carrier gas. The sample enters
from the top and the carrier gas from the side.
HALOGEN SCRUBBER
The detector, which measures carbon dioxide, can be
eected by halogens. To prevent analytical errors, the
Halogen Scrubber removes chlorine and other halogens
from the carbon dioxide before it enters the detector. The
Halogen Scrubber is a U-shaped tube led with Pyrex
wool, tin, and copper granules.
MOISTURE CONTROL SYSTEM MCS
The detector, which measures carbon dioxide, is aected
by water vapor, so the Torch is designed to remove
moisture from the sample. The Torch MCS consists of:
• Condensing Loop
• Cooling Fan
• Mist Trap
• Permeation Dryer
After oxidation of the sample, carrier gas sweeps CO2
and water vapor out of the Combustion Furnace through
tubing cooled by a fan to condense water vapor. Next, the
CO2travels through the Mist Trap, where most of the
condensate is collected and removed. The gases then
travel to the Permeation Dryer, which removes the rest of
the moisture from the sample gas.

NONDISPERSIVE INFRARED NDIR DETECTOR
After the Torch oxidizes the sample, it is swept into the
detector and pressurized to ensure that the entire sample
is present. The NDIR detector then measures the
concentration of carbon dioxide.
The NDIR detector of the Torch is based on proprietary
sensing technology. It has three major components: a light
source, a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI), and an IR
detector. The electronically pulsed light from the
miniature lament lamp is reected and re-focused back
to an IR detector located behind the FPI.
The FPI is a micro-machined silicon chip that contains two
parallel mirrors. The two parallel mirrors change distance
when a voltage is applied over the chip, allowing only
certain wavelengths of light to pass through to the IR
detector. The FPI is designed to pass light at the CO2
absorption wavelength (4.26μm) and a nearby,
non-absorbing wavelength. When the sensor is operating,
the FPI is regularly tuned back and forth between the
two wavelengths.
At the CO2 absorption wavelength, the intensity of
detected light is reduced in proportion to the concentration
of CO2 in the optical path. The light intensity measured
at the non-absorbing wavelength serves as a baseline for
comparison. The degree of light absorption in the gas,
indicated by the ratio of these two signals, is proportional
to the gas concentration. Carbon dioxide shows a unique
adsorption spectrum when infrared energy passes through
it, allowing the NDIR to distinguish it from other gases.
By regularly measuring CO2 absorption and the refer-
ence band, the FPI can automatically compensate for light
source intensity changes and loss of reectivity of the
optical sampling cell via contamination or otherwise.
This means that the NDIR detector itself can go for years
without re-calibration.
FLOW RESTRICTORS
Flow restrictors maintain the ow rate of the supply gas
as follows:
