AztecOPERATORINSTRUCTIONMANUAL
GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheAztecisaTransmitterreceiver(TR)MetalDetector,operatingintheverylowfrequency(VLF)portionoftheRF
spectrum.Thedetectorutilizesthenaturalphenomenaofthephasedelayofalltargetstoprovidemineralfreeorground
compensatedresponseinthenormalmodeofoperation,ortoprovidediscriminatecapabilityinthediscriminatemode.
TheAztecisanextremelysensitivemetaldetector,butbecauseofitsuniquepushbuttonMODECHANGE/TUNING
SWITCHistheeasiest"onehanded"VLF/TRDiscriminatortouse.
Aswithanydetector,thefamiliarityoftheuserwiththeinstrumentwillhaveagreatdealtodowithhowsuccessfulthe
treasurehunteris.Werecommendthatyoureadandunderstandthismanualfullybeforeattemptingtousetheinstrumentin
thefield.
Besuretofilloutandmailyourwarrantyregistrationcardtovalidateyourwarranty.
ASSEMBLY
AssemblyoftheAztecisverysimple,andrequiresnospecialtools.Theonlyassemblyrequiredistomountthe
searchcoiltotheendofthelowerstemandinstallthelowerstemandlockassemblytotheupperstem.
1. Insertthepoletipbetweenthemountingearsofthesearchcoil,afterremovingthescrewandthumbnut.Alignthe
holesinthepoletipandthoseinthemountingears.
2. Insertthecoilmountingscrewthroughthecoilandpoletip.Besuretheinternaltoothlockwasherisonthescrew
headside.Thescrewheadshouldbeonthesideofthesearchcoilwherethecablecomesout.
3. Installthethumbnutonthescrewandtightenbyhand.
4. Theknurledlocknutisinstalledontheupperstemtoprotectthethreadsduringhandlingandshipment.Removethe
locknutandslideitontothelowerstemasshown.Besurethelockringisinsidethelocknutorbehindit,sothatitwill
bepushedintothelocknutwhenthelocknutisreinstalledonthethreads.
5. Insertthelowerstemintotheupperstem,pushthelocknutuptoengagethethreads,andtightenitfingertight.
6. Windthesearchcoilcablearoundthepole,andinstallthesearchcoilconnectorintotheconnectoronthefrontofthe
chassis.Tightentheconnectorfingertight.
ADJUSTMENT
Thesearchcoilangleandstemlengthshouldbeadjustedsothattheunitisnotuncomfortableortiringafterlongperiods
ofuse.Thestemlengthisadjustedbylooseningtheknurledlocknutandextendingorcollapsingthestemlengthuntiltheunit
canbeheldaboutaninchoffthegroundwhilestandingerect.Adjusttheangleofthesearchcoil,sothatthecoilisparallelto
theground.Tightenthesearchcoilthumbnutandstemlocknutbyhandtomaintainthissetting.
CONTROLS
ThefunctionofthefrontpanelcontrolsoftheAztecareasfollows,beginninginthelowerlefthandcorner,andproceeding
inaclockwisedirection.
1. DiscLevel.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetector'sresponsetounwantedmetallictrashwhenusedinthe
Discriminatemode.Atthelowestsetting,"0",thedetectorwilleliminatemostironobjects,butwillstillrespondina
positivemannertolightfoil,bottlecaps,pulltabsandothermostothermetallicitems.Astheknobsettingisincreased,
responsetomoreofthesemetallictrashitemsisreversed,sothattheseobjectsgiveanegativeor"nulling"response.
2. GroundAdjust.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetectorsothatitdoesnotrespondtothemineralizationinthe
ground,whenusedinnormalmode.
3. Tuning.Thiscontrolisusedtotunethedetectortoitsmostsensitivesetting,regardlessofwhichmodeisused.
SincethetargetresponseofaTRdetectorisanincreaseinsoundlevel,theidealsettingformaximumdepthissothat
thedetectorisjustbeginningtomakesound.This"threshold"settingshouldbemaintainedatalltimes,asoperatingthe
detectorcompletelysilentmeansadeeptargetmayhaveinsufficientresponsetodrivethedetectoroutofthequietregion
andinto"threshold".
4. Sensitivity.Thiscontroladjuststhedetector'ssensitivitytogroundeffectsduetomineralization,aswellasits
sensitivitytometallictargets.Inthenormalmodeofoperation,thedetectorwillignoreeffectsofmineralizationifitis
properlyadjusted,sothedetectorcanbeoperatedinmaximumsensitivityinalmostanygroundinthemode.Inthe
discriminatemode,thegroundeffectsarenotignored,sothedetectormayperformbetterinheavilymineralizedgroundat
reducedsensitivity.
5. ModeSwitch.Thisswitchisathreepositionrotaryswitchwhichselectsthebasicdetectoroperationmode.
A. BatteryTest.Thispositionisusedtochecktheconditionofthebatteries.Thebatterytestshouldbeperformedafterthedetectorhas
beenonforabout10minutes,andwithamoderatetoheavyamountofsound.Ameterreadingof.6oraboveindicatesthebatterystrength
isadequateforproperoperation.Ifthemeterreadingisbelow.6,replacethebatteries.
B. Norm.ThispositionselectsNormalorAllMetalmode.IntheNormalposition,thedetectorcanbeadjustedtoignoreground
mineralizationformaximumdepth,butthedetectorwillnotdiscriminateagainstunwantedmetalssuchasiron,bottlecaps,etc.
C. Disc.ThispositionselectstheDiscriminatemodeofoperation,wherebyresponsetounwantedmetalobjectssuchasiron,bottlecaps,
thinfoilpieces,etc.,canbecontrolled.Groundmineralizationwillaffecttheoperationofthedetectorinthismode.
6. ON/OFFVolume.Thiscontroladjuststheamplitudeoftheaudiosignal,aswellascontrollingthepowertotheunit.
Whenusingtheinternalspeaker,thevolumecontrolshouldbeatitsmaximumclockwisesettingformaximumdepth.
Whenusingheadphones,theinternalspeakerisdisconnected,andthevolumecontrolshouldbesetformaximum
comfortablevolume.
7. MODECHANGE/TUNINGSwitch.Thispushbuttonswitchislocatedintheendofthehandle,whereitcanbe
operatedwiththethumborfirstfingerofthehandholdingthedetector.Thisswitchperformstwobasicfunctions.
A. Whendepressedmomentarilyandreleased,itretunesthedetectorbacktothedesiredthresholdpoint.
B. Whenheldinthedepressedposition,itcausesthedetectortoswitchtotheotheroperatingmode.IftheModeswitchisintheNORM
position,holdingtheMODECHANGE/TUNINGin,willchangethemodeofthedetectortoDiscriminate.IftheModeSwitchisintheDISC
position,holdingintheMODECHANGE/TUNINGSWITCHwillchangethemodeofthedetectortoNormal.Whentheswitchisreleased,the
detectoroperationreturnstothemodeselectedbytheModeSwitch.
TUNING
Nodetector,regardlessofhowpowerfulitis,canprovideoptimumdepthifitisimproperlytuned.Infact,themore
powerfuladetectoris,themorecriticalthetuningbecomes.Lesspowerfulunitsaremoretolerantofoperatormisadjustment,
butarenotcapableofthedepthoftheaproperlytunedhighpowerdetectorsuchastheAztec.
Ifyouwillrememberjustonething,andadjustyourdetectoraccordingly,youwillachievesatisfyingresults.Thisthingto
rememberis,alwaysoperatethedetectorat"Threshold"(withaveryslightamountofsound).Anytimeyouoperatea
detectorcompletelysilent,youarelosingdepth.ifthesoundistooloud,youwillalsolosedepth,becausetheweaksignals
fromdeeptargetswillnotbeasnoticeable.
FollowingtheturningproceduresoutlinedbelowwillhelpyouproperlytuneyourAztectoallowyoutooperateitat
threshold,andachievemaximumperformance.
A. NormalModeTuning.
1. TurnSensitivitycontroltomidrange(pointerstraightup).
2. TurnModecontroltoNorm.
3. TurntheGroundAdjustcontrolto5.
4. TurntheOn/OffVolumecontrolfullyclockwise.
5. Withthesearchcoilheldawayfromthegroundoranymetalobjects,depresstheTuningswitch(inthehandle)momentarilyandrelease
it.
6. Lowerthesearchcoiltowithinaninchoftheground,andobserveanychangesinthemeterreadingandaudiosoundasthecoil
approachestheground.
7. Ifthemeterreadingandthesoundincrease,turntheGroundAdjustcontroldownslightly(counterclockwise).Ifthemeterreadingand
thesounddecrease,turntheGroundAdjustcontrolupslightly(clockwise).
8. Raisethecoilbacktoabouttwofeetabovetheground,andmomentarilydepresstheTUNINGswitchtore establishthetuningthreshold.
9. Repeatsteps8,9,&10asrequired,untilthereisalmostnochangeinthemeterreadingandthesoundasthecoilisloweredtothe
ground.NOTE:thegroundmustbefreeofallmetallicitemswherethecoilislowered.Ifyoucannotadjustthedetectortodothis,youmay
beoverapieceofmetal.Movetoanotherspotandtryagain.
10. MomentarilydepresstheTuningswitch,andturntheTuningcontroldowntogetjustafaintaudiobuzz.
ThedetectorisnowreadytouseintheNormalmodeofoperation.OncethedetectorisGroundCompensated,rememberthenumbersetting
ontheGroundadjustcontrol,anduseitasastartingpointnexttime.
B. DiscriminateMode.
1. TurnSensitivitycontroltomidrange(pointerstraightup).
2. TurnModecontroltoDisc.
3. TurntheDiscLevelcontrolto5.
4. TurntheOn/OffVolumecontrolfullyclockwise.
5. Withthesearchcoilheldawayfromthegroundoranymetalobjects,depresstheTuningswitch(inthehandle)momentarilyandrelease
it.
6. Holdthesearchcoilabout1to2inchesabovetheground,andmomentarilydepresstheTuningswitchinthehandleandreleaseit.
7. Raiseandlowerthesearchcoilslightly,andnotethetuningchanges.Ifaslightupwardmovementcausesafullscalemeterdeflection
andmaximumaudio,thegroundisheavilymineralized,andmayrequirealowersensitivitysetting.Ifthedetectorcantolerateanupward
movementofseveralinchesbeforepeggingthemeterandaudio,thegroundislightlymineralizedandtheSensitivityknobcanprobablybe
adjustedhigher.
8. AdjusttheSensitivitycontroltothehighestsettingthatwillallowyoutosweepthedetectorfromsidetosideandstillmaintainthe
threshold.AttemptingtooperatethedetectorinDiscriminateModeatmaximumsensitivitywillalmostalwaysresultinalossofdepthwhen
usedinmineralizedground.
ThedetectorisnowreadytouseintheDiscriminatemode.TheDISCLEVELcontrolshouldbesettothedesiredleveloftrashrejection.
Remembertokeepaslightbuzzinthedetectorasyousweepit.
FIELDUSE
Thedetectorshouldbeheldinapositionthatiscomfortableforyou.Swingthedetectorfromsidetosideinaboutathree
footarc.TheAztecdoesnotneedtobehurried,sogoatapacethatdoesn'twearyouout.
Keepthedetectortunedsothatitisjustbeginningtobuzz.InNormalModethedetectorignorestheground,ifproperly
adjusted,sothisiseasytodo.InDiscriminate,thegroundwillaffectthedetector,soyoushouldsweepthedetectorata
constantheightabovetheground(about1inch).Irregularitiesintheground,aswellasinyoursweepheightwillcause
variationsinthetuning.Thesechangeswillusuallybemuchslowerthantheabruptsignalcausedbythecoilpassingovera
goodtarget.Alittlepracticewithacoinburiedabout1inchwillenableyoutopickoutthetargetsoundreadily,ascompared
tothebackgroundvariations.TurningtheSensitivitydownwillmakeiteasiertomaintainthreshold.Alwaysoperatein
DiscriminatewiththeSensitivitycontrolsetonlyashighaswillallowyoutooperateintheunitatthreshold.
Inareaswithwellkeptlawns,theeasiestwaytomaintainaconstantsearchcoilheightistoallowthecoiltorestonthe
grassasyousweepfromsidetoside.Inroughandrockyareasitisbestnotto“scrub”thecoilontheground,astherocks
willactlikeabrasives,andwearawaythecoilbottom.
SincethecombinedMODECHANGE/TUNINGSWITCHallowsthedetectortobeoperatedwithjustonehand,itisvery
easytosearchinNormalmodeuntilatargetisfound,andthenswitchtoDiscriminatetocheckwhetheritisagoodtargetor
junk.
OnceatargetislocatedintheNormalmode,itismucheasierto"find"inDiscriminate,becauseyoualreadyknowthatit
isthere.Therefore,youcanuseahighersettingonthesensitivitycontrolforcheckingknowntargetlocationsthanyoucould
forhuntingintheDiscriminatemode.Thisispossiblebecauseyouwillbelimitingyoursweeptojustafewinches,givingyou
muchbettercontroloveryourcoilheightvariations.
Topinpointorlocateatargetwhichdoesn'tpegthemeterandaudio,simplymovethecoilaroundtofindthepointwhere
theloudestaudioandhighestmeterreadingisgiven.Thetargetwillberightbelowthecenterofthecoil.ifthetargetresponse
issostrongitpegsthemeterandaudio,simplypushthetuningbuttonmomentarilyoverthestrongestsignal.Thiswilltune
outmostoftheresponsetothetargetandthedetectorwillgototallyquietifitismovedawayfromthetarget.Itmaybe
necessarytoretuneacoupleoftimestoalmosttotallytuneoutthetarget,butyouwilleventuallyarriveatatuninglevelthat
willnotsaturateorpegthemeterandaudiowhenyouaredirectlyoverthetarget.
IntheDiscriminateMode,thetuningwillhavetoberesetanytimethattheDiscLevelischanged.Thismerelyrequires
thatyoumomentarilydepresstheMODECHANGE/TUNINGSWITCH.Beingfamiliarwithyourdetectorandwheretypical
junkitemsarerejectedcansaveyoumuchneedlessdigging.
Onethingtoremember,though,isthatinDiscriminateMode,itisbestnottouseanyhigherDiscriminateLevelsetting
thannecessary.NickelsandmostsmallringsarerejectedwhentheDISCLEVELissettorejectpulltabsonallTR
Discriminators.Ifyoudon'tdiganyjunkatall,youaresurelypassingupalotofothergoodfindstoo.SettheDISCLEVEL
onlyhighenoughtosuittheconditionswhereyouaresearching.
Forrelichuntingorforcoinshootinginareasthatarefreeoftrash,theGNDREJModeofoperationwillnormallygivebest
results,sincethedetectoriseasytousewithmaximumsensitivity.Itmaybedesirabletooperatewithreducedsensitivityin
theGNDREJModeattimes,however.Forexample,topreventhavingtodiglarge,deepholesinawellkeptparklawn.
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
TheAztecisequippedwithaninternalbatterycheckcircuitsoyoucanalwaysknowyou'regettingtopperformancefrom
yourdetector.Thebatteriesshouldbetestedafterthedetectorhasbeenoperatedforabouttenminutes,andwhilethe
detectorismakingaloudnoise,sothebatteriesareproperlyloaded.Toforcetheaudioon,simplyholdthesearchcoilneara
largemetalobjectwhilecheckingthebatteries,ordepressthetuningbuttonandturntheTuningcontrolfullyclockwise.
Ifthemeterreadslessthan.6,thebatteriesshouldbereplacedtoensurebestperformance.
Tochangethebatteries,depressthechromebuttonsoneachsideofthedetector,andslidethebatterycoveroffthe
backofthechassis.Thebatteriesarecontainedinaplasticholderjustbehindthecover.
Removethebatterypackfromthedetector,andthenremovethebatteriesfromthepack.Replacethenewpenlight
batteriesintothepack,observingthepolarityindicatorsthatareembossedineachbatterycompartmentofthebatterypack.
Replacethepackintotheholder,andreplacethebatterycoverbydepressingthechromebuttonsasthecoverisslid
backintothechassis.
Shouldyoudesiretodoso,rechargeableNickelCadmiumbatteriescanbesubstitutedforthestandardpenlightcells.
IndividualsizeAAcellsarereadilyavailableatmostelectronicsupplystores,aswellasthechargesforthem,andtheycan
beinsertedintothestandard8cellolderusedinyourAztec.Theinitialbatterycheckreadingwillbeslightlylower,butwillnot
dropasmuchwithuse,untilthebatteriesarecompletelydischarged.
GENERALCAREANDUSE
Ifthedetectoristobestoredforalongperiodoftime,itisbesttoremovethebatterypackfromthedetector.Thiswill
preventinternaldamagetothedetectorifthebatteriesshouldleak.
Thesearchcoiliswaterproofandmaybesubmergedineitherfreshorsaltwater.Cautionshouldbeexercisedtoprevent
waterfromenteringthechassis,whereitcoulddamagetheelectroniccircuitry,orfromenteringtheupperstem,whereit
coulddamagethepushbuttonorleakintothechassis.Afterthecoilisusedinsaltwater,thecoilandlowerstemassembly
shouldberinsedwellwithfreshwatertopreventcorrosionofthemetalparts.
Thereareseveralgoodbookstohelpthebeginnerlearnhowtousethedetector,wheretosearchandhowtorecovera
targetwithoutdamagingtheenvironment.Agoodcoinshootercanrecoveralotoffindsandleavethearealookingasthough
hehadneverbeenthere.Aboveall,alwaysfillyourholeswhenyouhaverecoveredthetarget.
TESOROMetalDetectorsaresoldthroughindependentdealers,whoarealmostalwaystreasurehuntersthemselves.
Theycanprovideyouwithyoumuchneededinformationabouthowtouseyourdetector,howtoprobe,pluganddiginyour
locale,andanswermostofyourquestionsabouttreasurehuntingingeneral.
Theuseofearphoneswillbenefityouintwoways.Mostearphoneswillveryeffectivelyblockoutmostoftheambient
noise,suchastrafficnoiseandwindnoise,whichwillenableyoutobetterhearthefaintersignalscausedbythedeeper
targets.Obviously,theolder,morevaluablecoinswillprobablybedeeperthantheoneswhichwerelostlastweek,soyou
shouldtakeadvantageofanythingthatwillhelpyouheartheweakersignals.Secondly,usingearphoneswillgreatlyextend
thebatterylife,sinceittakesmuchlesspowertooperatethem.TheAztecisnotequippedwithavolumecontrol,butdoes
havealimitingcircuitintheearphonejack.Iflessvolumeisdesiredwithearphones,youmaywanttouseearphoneswitha
builtinvolumecontrol.Anygood8or16ohmsetwith1/4inchstereojackwilldo.
The81/2"coplanarsearchcoilfurnishedwiththeAztecwillprovideexcellentresultsforbothcoinshootingandrelic
huntinginthemajorityofareas.ForthosefewareashavingsuchextrememineralizationthatoperationintheDiscriminate
modeisverydifficult,thesmaller7"coilofferedbyTESOROwillprovideeasieroperationinDiscriminate.
