GENERALDESCRIPTION
TheAztecisaTransmitterreceiver(TR)MetalDetector,operatingintheverylowfrequency(VLF)portionoftheRF
spectrum.Thedetectorutilizesthenaturalphenomenaofthephasedelayofalltargetstoprovidemineralfreeorground
compensatedresponseinthenormalmodeofoperation,ortoprovidediscriminatecapabilityinthediscriminatemode.
TheAztecisanextremelysensitivemetaldetector,butbecauseofitsuniquepushbuttonMODECHANGE/TUNING
SWITCHistheeasiest"onehanded"VLF/TRDiscriminatortouse.
Aswithanydetector,thefamiliarityoftheuserwiththeinstrumentwillhaveagreatdealtodowithhowsuccessfulthe
treasurehunteris.Werecommendthatyoureadandunderstandthismanualfullybeforeattemptingtousetheinstrumentin
thefield.

ASSEMBLY
AssemblyoftheIncaisverysimple,andrequiresnospecialtools.Theonlyassemblyrequiredistomountthesearchcoil
totheendofthelowerstemandtoinstallthelowerstemandlocknutassemblytotheupperstem.
1. Depressthetwobuttonsontheupperendofthelowerstem,andslideitintotheupperstem.Pushthelowerstem
upsothatthebuttonsclickintothethirdsetofholesfromtheendoftheupperstem.
2. Insertthepoletipbetweenthemountingearsofthesearchcoil,afterremovingthescrewandthumbnut.Alignthe
holesinthepoletipandthoseinthemountingears.
3. Insertthecoilmountingscrewthroughthecoilandpoletip.Thescrewheadshouldbeonthesideofthesearchcoil
wherethecablecomesout.
4. Installthethumbnutonthescrewandtightenbyhand.
5. Windthesearchcoilcablearoundthepolebydepressingthespringbuttonsandturningthelowerstemaround
severaltimesasnecessary.
ADJUSTMENT
Thesearchcoilangleandstemlengthshouldbeadjustedsothattheunitisnotuncomfortableortiringafterlongperiods
ofuse.Thestemlengthisadjustedbydepressingthespringbuttonsandextendingorshorteningthepoletilltheyclickinto
theholesthatgiveyouthemostcomfortablesetting.Thecoilshouldbeaboutoneinchabovethegroundwhilestandingerect.
Adjusttheangleofthesearchcoil,sothatthecoilisparalleltotheground.Tightenthesearchcoilthumbnutbyhandto
maintainthissetting.
Thearmrestontherearofthehandlecanbemovedforwardbyremovingthescrewsandnuts,andreinstallingthe
assemblyintothemostforwardsetofholes.
SPECIFICATIONS
CONTROLS
ThefunctionofthefrontpanelcontrolstheIncaareasfollows.
1. ON/OFF,TUNING,BATTERYTEST.Thiscontrolisusedtotunethedetectortoit'smostsensitivelevel(Threshold)
regardlessofwhichmodeofoperationisbeingused.Italsocontrolsthepowerforthedetector,andactivatesthe
automaticbatterytestcircuitry.TheMODEcontrolshouldalwaysbeintheNORMALONLYpositionandthe
MODE/TUNINGswitchdepressedwhensettingtheunittothresholdwiththeTUNINGcontrol,orwhencheckingthe
batteries.Thebatteriesshouldbetestedafterabout10minutesofoperation,andwithamoderatetoheavyamountof
sound.Turnthedetectoroffmomentarily,andthenbackon,turningtheTUNINGcontrolcompletelyclockwisetomake
maximumsound.Thedetectorwillremaininthebatterytestmodeforabout3to5seconds.Ameterreadingof.6or
aboveindicatesthebatterystrengthisadequateforproperoperation.Ifthemeterreadingisbelow.6,replacethe
batteries.Thenaftercheckingthebatteries,retunetothresholdbeforereleasingtheMODE/CHANGETUNINGSWITCH
andturningtheMODEcontrolswitchtothedesiredmodeofoperation.
2. GROUNDADJUST.Thecontrolisusedtoadjustthedetectorsothatitdoesn'trespondtothemineralizationinthe
groundwhenusedintheNORMAL(allmetal)mode.TheGROUNDADJUSTiseasiertosetwhentheMODEswitchisin
theNORMALONLYposition,sincethethresholdwillremainwhentheMODECHANGE/TUNINGSWITCHisdepressed
inthisposition.
3. DISCRIMINATELEVEL.Thiscontrolisusedtoadjustthedetector'sresponsetounwantedmetallictrashwhenused
intheDiscriminatemode.Atthelowestsetting"0",thedetectorwilleliminatemostironobjects,butwillstillrespondina
positivemannertolightfoil,bottlecaps,pulltabsandmostothermetallicitems.Astheknobsettingisincreased,
responsetomoreofthesemetallictrashitemsisreversedsothattheseobjectsgivenoresponse.
4. DISCRIMINATESENSITIVITY.SincetheIncaisamineralfreediscriminator,thiscontrolwillusuallybesetatthe
maximum.Therearesituations,however,wherereducingthesensitivitywillyieldbetterperformance.Thesesituations
willusuallybeselfevidentduetospuriousnoise"signals"causedbyveryheavymetallictrashconcentrations,minerals,
orRForpowerlineinterference.Setthiscontrolashighaswillallowyoutooperatewithatolerablelevelofinterference.
5. MODESWITCH.Thisswitchisathreepositionrotarycontrolwhichselectsthedetector'sbasicoperatingmode.In
theNORMALONLYmode,thepushbuttonMODECHANGE/TUNINGswitchactsasaTUNINGswitchonly,andno
modechangeisaccomplishedwhenthepushbuttonisdepressed.IntheNORMALorDISCRIMmodes,depressingand
holdingthepushbuttoncausesachangetotheothermode.Whenthepushbuttonisreleased,thedetectorreturnsto
themodeselectedbytheMODESWITCHtohelpyourememberwhichcontrolsareoperationalineachofthetwobasic
modes.
6. TUNING/MODECHANGESWITCH.Thispushbuttonswitchislocatedintheendofthehandle,whereitcanbe
operatedwiththethumbofthehandholdingthedetector.Thisswitchperformstwofunctions.
A. Whendepressedmomentarilyandreleased,itretunesthedetectorbacktothedesiredthreshold,wheninNORMALONLYmode.
B. Whenheldinthedepressedposition,itcausesthedetectortoswitchtotheotherbasicmode.IftheMODEswitchisintheNormal
position,holdingthebuttondownwillcausethedetectortoswitchtoDiscriminateMode.IftheMODEswitchisintheDiscriminateposition,
holdingthebuttondownwillcausethedetectortoswitchtoNormalmode.Whenthebuttonisreleased,thedetectorreturnstothemode
selectedbytheModeswitch.
7. METER.Themeterandit'sassociatedcircuitry,whilenotreallyacontrol,servestwoimportantfunctions.
A. BATTERYTEST.Thisfunctionisautomaticallyperformedforabout4secondseachtimethedetectorpoweristurnedon.Themeter
readingwillbeabovethe.6markontheintensityscalewhentheunitismakingaloudnoiseifthebatterystrengthisadequateforproper
performance.
B. COINDEPTH.IntheNORMALposition,themeterwillindicateapproximatedepthofthedetectedtarget,assumingthetargettobecoin
size.IntheDISCRIMmode,thedepthreadingfeaturewillbeinoperable.
ThecoindepthreadingfeatureoftheIncaisanextremelyusefulaidinpinpointing.Thereadingwillreachit'smaximumforwarddeflection
onthemeterneedlewhenthesearchcoilisdirectlyoverthetarget,andthemeterreadingwillthenindicatetheapproximatetargetdepth.
TUNING
Nodetector,regardlessofhowpowerfulitis,canprovideoptimumdepthifitisimproperlytuned.Infact,themore
powerfuladetectoris,themorecriticalthetuningbecomes.Lesspowerfulunitsaremoretolerantofoperatormisadjustment,
butarenotcapableofthedepthofaproperlytunedhighpowerdetectorsuchastheInca.
ToachievemaximumperformancefromyourIncabesuretoproperlyadjusttheGROUNDADJUSTandTUNINGcontrols
intheNormalModeonly.Thesettingsofthesecontrolswillalsoaffectthedetector'sperformanceintheDiscrimmode,sobe
suretoadjustthemproperly,evenifyouonlyplantooperatethedetectorintheDiscrimmode.
FollowingthetuningproceduresoutlinedbelowwillhelpyouproperlytuneyourInca,andwillallowyoutofullyutilizeits
performancecapabilities.
A.NORMALMODETUNING.NormalModeTuning.
1. SettheModeSwitchtotheNormalOnlyposition.
2. Depressthehandlemountedpushbuttonswitch,andturntheOn/OffTuningcontrolcompletelyclockwise.Checkto
seethatthebatteryreadingisabove.6.
3. Afterthebatterytestperiodahselapsed,turntheTuningcontroldownsothedetectorismakingjustamoderate
buzz.BesuretokeepthepushbuttondepressedwhilesettingtheTuningcontrol.
4. Holdthesearchcoilabouttwofeetabovetheground,andreleasethepushbutton.
5. Lowerthesearchcoiltoaboutoneortwoinchesabovetheground,andnoticeanychangesintheaudiosoundas
thisisdone.
6. Iftheaudiosoundlevelincreased,turntheGroundAdjustcontrolslightlylower.NotethatturningtheGroundAdjust
controlwillcauseachangeintheaudiolevel.Ignorethischange,asitisofnoconsequence.Theonlychangeofconcern
isthatchangewhichoccursasthesearchcoilisloweredtotheground.
7. Raisethesearchcoiltoabouttwofeetabovetheground,andmomentarilydepressthepushbuttontoretunethe
detectortothemoderatebuzz.
8. Repeatsteps5,6,and7,untilthereisalmostnochangeintheaudiolevelasthesearchcoilisloweredtothe
ground.NOTE:thegroundmustbefreeofallmetallicitemswherethecoilislowered.Ifyoucannotadjustthedetectorto
dothis,youmaybeoverapieceofmetal.Movetoanotherspotandtryagain.
9. Momentarilydepressthetuningswitch,andturntheTUNINGcontroldowntogetjustafaintaudiobuzz.The
detectorisnowreadytouseintheNORMALmodeofoperation.OncethedetectorisGroundCompensated,remember
thenumbersettingontheGROUNDADJUSTcontrol,anduseitasastartingpointnexttime.
B.DISCRIMINATEMODETUNING.
TuningtheIncaforuseintheDiscriminatemoderequiresthattheNormalModetuningprocedurebeproperly
accomplished,astheGroundAdjustcontrolprovidesformineralfreeoperatinginboththeAllMetalandDiscrimmodes.Also,
thethresholdsettingoftheTuningcontroldeterminestheminimumsoundlevelfordeeptargetsintheDiscriminatemode.Too
littlethreshold,anddepthwillbelost.Toomuchthreshold,andthedetectormaybecomeerratic.
AftertheNormalmodeprocedureisaccomplished,theonlysettingsnecessaryforoperationinDiscriminatemodeisto
settheDiscLevelcontroltothedesiredamountoftrashrejection,andtosettheSensitivitycontrolthemaximumsettingthat
willallowsmoothoperation.
SELECTINGTHEPROPERMODEOFOPERATION
TheIncaofferstwobasicmodesofoperation,theNormalmode(AllMetal)andtheDiscriminatemode.Bothmodesare
mineralfreeiftheunitisproperlyadjusted.TheNormalmodeistheindustrystandard"VLF"typewhichdoesnotrequire
motionofthesearchcoilforproperoperation.Thismode,whilerequiringaninitialgroundadjustsettingofsoundthreshold,
offerstwoveryimportantadvantages,thesebeingtheabilitytopinpointwithoutmotion,andtoprovideexactground
canceling.TheDiscriminatemodeisbasedonmotionofthesearchcoil,butrequiresverylittlemotion,andoffersthe
advantageofcompletelysilentoperation.Pushbuttonmodechangebetweenthesetwomodesisalsoincluded,offeringthe
mostversatile"onehanded"operatingsystem.
Sincethethresholdsoundwill"comeandgo"asthepushbuttonisusedtochangemodes,athirdoperationmodewas
added,thisbeingtheNormalOnlymode.Inthismode,themodechangefeatureisdefeated,andthedetectorwillretuneto
thresholdwhenthepushbuttonisdepressed.
TheNormalOnlymodeisthebetmodefortheinitialgroundadjustandthresholdadjustments,sincethethresholddoes
notgoawaywhenthebuttonispushed.Thismodewouldprobablyethebestchoiceforsomeonewhoisnuggethuntingor
relichunting,andisnotinterestedinswitchingtoDisc.
ThepushbuttonmodechangefeatureoftheIncaallowstheusertheoptionsofeithersearchinginnormalmodetofindall
targetsandswitchingtodiscriminatetocheckthem,ortosearchindiscriminateandswitchtonormaltopinpointand
measuredepth.Theformermethodhashistoricallybeenthemostthoroughwaytosearchagivenarea,buttheextraslow
sweepoftheIncatendstoovercomemostofthedisadvantagesofsearchingindiscriminate,somostpeoplewillprobably
operateindiscriminatebecauseofthesilentoperation.
Earliermotiondiscriminatorsthatareoperatedwiththe"Threshold"soundwouldgivetheuseradefiniteindicationof
metallictrashbyeithernullingcompletelyorbygeneratingshort,choppysounds.SincetheDiscriminatemodeoperates
withoutthresholdsound,thereisnonullingtoindicatethattheareaisextremelytrashy.WhensearchingintheDiscriminate
mode,werecommendthatyouperiodicallyswitchtoNormalmodeandchecktheareayouaresearchingtogetanideaof
howmuchtrashisreallythere.Inextremelyheavytrashareas,itmaybedesirabletoswitchtoasmallersearchcoil,even
throughdoingsowillcausealossofdepth.Thesmallercoilwillallowyouabetterchanceoffindingcoinsbetweentheclose
piecesoftrash.
FIELDUSE
Thedetectorshouldbeheldinapositionthatiscomfortableforyou.Swingthedetectorfromsidetosideinaboutathree
footarc,overlappingsucceedingstrokeswell.Thismotioniscalleda“sweep.”TheIncawasdesignedtogetmaximumdepth
withoutthefranticpacerequiredofearliermotiondetectors,sogoatapacethatiscomfortableforyou.Infact,tryingtohunt
toofastinDiscriminatemayevencausealossofdepthinheavilymineralizedlocations.
Itwouldbehelpfultoburysomecoinsandtrashmetaljunkitemsinanareathatyouknowisclearofothermetal
objects,andthentrytheunitinitsvariousmodes.ChecktheareainAllMetalModefirsttobesureitsclearoftrashthen
burythetargetsatleastafootapart,andfrom2to6inchesdeeptostart.Makeamapofthetestbedtobesureyouknow
whateachtargetisandhowdeepitis.Practiceonthesetargetstofamiliarizeyourselfwithyourdetector’stargetresponse.
ThiswillalsohelpyoulearnthepropersweeprateforDISCoperation.
InNormalmodeoperation,keepthedetectortunedsothatthereisjustaslightbuzzingofasound.Thisiseasytodo
becausethegroundmineralsdonotaffecttheNormalmodeifproperlyadjusted.Regardlessofwhichmodeyouareusing,try
tokeepyoursearchcoilheightconstantandclosetotheground.Mostpeopletendtoraisethecoilattheendofasweep,
muchlikeapendulum,especiallyiftheyarehurrying.Trytoavoidthis,asanyincreaseinheightwillcauseacorresponding
lossofdepth.
Inareaswithwellkeptlawns,theeasiestwaytomaintainaconstantsearchcoilheightistoallowthecoiltorestonthe
grassasyousweepfromsidetoside.Inroughandrockyareasitisbestnotto“scrub”thecoilontheground,astherocks
willactlikeabrasives,andwearawaythecoilbottom(anoptionalcoilscuffcoverwillprotectagainstthis.)Sweepthecoilas
closetothegroundaspossiblewithouttouching.Hittingthegroundorrocksmaycauseafalsesignalmuchlikeadesired
targetwould.Sweepingthecoiltoohighabovethegroundresultsinalossofdepth.
WhenoperatingintheDiscriminateMode,some“falsesignals”maybecausedby1)heavyconcentrationsoftrashmetal
objects,2)verylargetrashmetalobjects,or3)electricalinterference.Thesesignalswillsounddifferentthangoodtarget
signalsbecausetheyaregenerallyshort,choppysounds.Attheendofyoursweep,asyouthereversethecoildirection,the
detectorismostsusceptibletotrashinducednoise.Therearetwowaystotellwhetherthesesoundsaregooddeepsignals
ortrash“noise.”Thefirstisbyrepeatability.Trashinducednoiseswillnotberegularasyousweepthecoiloverthesuspected
targetseveraltimes,whereasagoodtargetresponsewillberepeatable.ThesecondmethodistoswitchtoAllMetalMode
andcheckthetargetresponsesound.Iftheresponseisweak,itmaywellbeadeep,goodtarget;butiftheresponseisvery
strong,itisprobablytrash.Notethatacoinclosetothesurfacecangiveadoublebeepsound,butitisregularand
repeatable.Raisingthecoilaninchortwowillrestorethesinglebeeponsurfacetargets.
Ifthereisanydoubtwhetheratargetisgoodornot,DIGIT.Forthissamereason,intheDiscriminateMode,itisbest
nottouseahigherDISCLEVELsettingthannecessary.NickelsandmostsmallerringsarerejectedwhentheDISCLEVEL
issettorejectpulltabsonanymetaldetectorthatisaTRDiscriminatorliketheInca.Ifyoudon’tdiganyjunkatall,youare
surelypassingupalotofgoodfindsaswell.SettheDISCLEVELonlyhighenoughtosuittheconditionswhereyouare
searching.
ThesweepspeedoftheIncaisslowenoughtoallowpinpointingintheDiscriminateMode,butwillrequirealittlemore
practice.Movethecoilslowlyfromsidetosideandthenfromfronttobackoverthetarget.Raisingthecoilslightlyand
slowingthesweepspeedwillnarrowdownthedetectionareaenoughthatit'seasytotellwherethecoilcenterisatthe
instantofthesound.
TopinpointinNormalmodedoesnotrequireanymotion,somaybeeasierformostpeople.Topinpointatargetthat
doesn'tsaturatetheaudio,justmovethecoilforwardandback,andsidetosideuntilyougetthestrongestsound.Thetarget
willbedirectlybelowthecoilcenter.Iftheaudiosaturatesoveralargearea,simplypushthetuningmodeswitchtotheretune
positionmomentarilyovertheareatodetunethedetector.Thiswillnarrowitsfieldofresponsetoallowyoutoonceagain
seektheareaofstrongestresponse.Itmaybenecessarytoretunemorethanoncewiththistechnique.Thecoindepthmeter
isalsoagoodpinpointingtool,sinceitdoesn'tsaturateundernormalconditions.SimplyswitchtoNormaltothesideofthe
target,movethecoiloverthetarget,andmoveituntilyougetthemostforwarddeflectionofthemeter.Thiswillnotonlytell
youtargetcenter,butdepthalsoifyoudidnottuneoveratarget.
RECOMMENDEDRECOVERYMETHODS
Alwaysobtainpermissionfromthepersoninchargebeforehuntingonprivateproperty,schoolyards,parks,churches,or
stateparks.Evenwhenrelichuntinginthewoods,NEERLEAVEAHOLE!,ordamageanythingontheproperty.
PROTECTYOURHOBBYFILLALLHOLES
BATTERYREPLACEMENT
TheIncahasanautomaticbatterytestcircuitsoyoucanalwaysknowyou'regettingtopperformancefromyourdetector.
Thebatteriesshouldbetestedafterthedetectorhasbeenoperatedforabouttenminutes,andwhilethedetectorismakinga
loudnoise,sothebatteriesareproperlyloaded.Tocheckthebatteries,simplyturntheIncaofforaboutfiveseconds,and
thenturnitbackonandrotatetheTUNINGcontrolcompletelyclockwise.DepresstheTUNING/MODECHANGEbuttonifitis
notmakinglotsofsound.Themeterwillindicatethebatterystrengthforaboutfourseconds.Ifthemeterreadslessthan.6
duringthisperiod,replacethebatteries.
Toreplacethebatteries,pullthelargeknobonthebatterydooronthefrontoftheunit.Theentiredoorwillpopout.
Removethebatterypackfromthedetector,andthenremovethebatteriesfromthepack.Replacethenewpenlightbatteries
intothepack,observingthepolarityindicatorsthatareembossedintotheinsidesofthepack.Slidethepackbackintothe
detector,makingsurethatthebatteryclipleadisconnectedtothepack.Installthebatterydoorflangeintothetopofthe
cutoutinthechassis,andpushthenylonfastenerintotheholeatthebottomofthechassis,makingsurethattheplungers
arestillpulledout.Thenpushtheplungerbackintolockthedoorinplace.
Shouldyoudesiretodoso,rechargeableNickelCadmiumbatteriescanbesubstitutedforstandardpenlightcells.
IndividualAAsizecellsarereadilyavailableatmostelectronicsupplystores,aswellasthechargersforthem,andtheycan
beinsertedintothestandard8holderusedinyourInca.Theinitialbatterycheckreadingwillbeslightlylower,butwillnot
dropasmuchwithuse,untilthebatteriesarecompletelydischarged.
GENERALCAREANDUSE
Ifthedetectoristobestoredforalongperiodoftime,itisbesttoremovethebatterypackfromthedetector.Thiswill
preventinternaldamagetothedetectorifthebatteriesshouldleak.
Thesearchcoiliswaterproofandmaybesubmergedineitherfreshorsaltwater.Cautionshouldbeexercisedtoprevent
waterfromenteringthechassis,whereitcoulddamagetheelectroniccircuitry.Afterthecoilisusedinsaltwater,thecoil
andlowerstemassemblyshouldberinsedwellwithfreshwatertopreventcorrosionofthemetalparts.Whenusedinthe
bodymountconfiguration,youshouldnotallowthecableconnectorstobesubmerged.
Thereareseveralgoodbookstohelpthebeginnerlearnhowtousethedetector,wheretosearchandhowtorecovera
targetwithoutdamagingtheenvironment.Agoodcoinshootercanrecoveralotoffindsandleavethearealookingasthough
hehadneverbeenthere.Aboveall,alwaysfillyourholeswhenyouhaverecoveredthetarget.
TESOROMetalDetectorsaresoldthroughindependentdealers,whoarealmostalwaystreasurehuntersthemselves.
Theycanprovideyouwithyoumuchneededinformationabouthowtouseyourdetector,howtoprobe,pluganddiginyour
locale,andanswermostofyourquestionsabouttreasurehuntingingeneral.
Theuseofearphoneswillbenefityouintwoways.Mostearphoneswillveryeffectivelyblockoutmostoftheambient
noise,suchastrafficnoiseandwindnoise,whichwillenableyoutobetterhearthefaintersignalscausedbythedeeper
targets.Obviously,theolder,morevaluablecoinswillprobablybedeeperthantheoneswhichwerelostlastweek,soyou
shouldtakeadvantageofanythingthatwillhelpyouheartheweakersignals.Secondly,usingearphoneswillgreatlyextend
thebatterylife,sinceittakesmuchlesspowertooperatethem.Thedetectorisnotequippedwithavolumecontrol,butdoes
