Description
The Greenlee CLM-1000 and CLM-1000E Cable Length
Meters are hand-held testing devices with the follow-
ing measurement capabilities: resistance, temperature,
and length. They can be used as μΩ meters to measure
precise bonding resistances. The primary function of these
meters is to calculate the length of cable based upon its
material, temperature, and cable gauge. Cable material
type can be either uncoated copper or aluminum. There
are 20 pre-programmed and eight programmable cable
gauges. (There are no strands per cable specification for
the eight programmable switch positions.)
The pre-programmed switch positions
for the CLM-1000are:
• AWG (7 strands) – 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18
• Aught (19 strands) – 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0
• kcmil (37 strands) – 250, 350, 400, 500
• kcmil (61 strands) – 600, 750, 1000
The pre-programmed switch positions
for the CLM-1000Eare:
• mm2(7 strands) – 0.75, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6, 10, 16, 25, 35
• mm2(19 strands) – 50, 70, 95
• mm2(37 strands) – 120, 150, 185, 240

Using the Features
• :Press momentarily to turn the backlight ON. Once
lit, press button again to turn the backlight OFF. The
backlight automatically turns OFF after approximately
30 seconds to extend battery life.
• FT/M: Press momentarily to select length measurement
units. On the LCD, “ft” indicates feet and “m” indicates
meters.
• CAL: The meter must be calibrated each time it is
turned ON. Refer to “Operation” for a complete descrip-
tion of the calibration process.
• Esc: Press to escape from programming process.
• MEM: Button is used for the user-selected program-
ming function. Refer to “Operation” for a complete
description of the programming process.
• Cu/Al: Press momentarily to select cable material.
On the LCD, “Cu” indicates copper and “Al” indicates
aluminum.
• HOLD: Press momentarily to enter data hold mode.
When button is pressed, “dH” is present on the LCD and
the current value is captured. To exit this mode, press
the HOLD, FT/M or Cu/Al button. “dH” is no longer
present on the LCD.
• Auto Power Off (APO): When enabled, the meter will
automatically turn OFF after 10 minutes of inactiv-
ity. Inactivity is defined as no button press or rotary
switch movement. The buzzer sounds three times
approximately 30 seconds before the meter turns OFF
as a warning. To disable APO, press and hold the HOLD
button while turning the meter ON.
• qp:Used during the user-selected programming
process. Refer to “Operation” for a complete description
of the programming process.

Operation
Electric shock hazard:
Do not connect the unit to live voltage.
Contact with live circuits could result
in severe injury or death.
Calibration Procedure
Each time the meter is turned ON, it should be calibrated
before use.
1. Refer to “Typical Measurements” for calibration setup
diagram.
2. Ensure the calibration bar and Kelvin clips jaws are
clean.
3. Move rotary switch from the OFF position to Ω.
4. Ensure that both leads for the red set of Kelvin clips
are plugged into the red terminals on the meter.
Ensure that both leads for the black set of Kelvin clips
are pluggged into the black terminals on the meter.
5. Place each Kelvin clip on the calibration bar. Move the
clips as close together as possible.
6. Press the CAL button. Dashes appear on the LCD.
Next “MEM” and “donE” appear on the LCD. Then
“RES” on the LCD indicates the meter is back in
resistance mode. If “FAIL” appears on the LCD and the
buzzer sounds, there was an issue with the calibration
process. Turn meter OFF and return to step 1 of this
procedure.
7. After successful completion of the calibration process,
the meter is ready for normal operation.
Operating Procedure
1. If the unit does not function as expected on a known
functioning configuration, replace the batteries.
If the unit still does not function as expected, call
Greenlee for technical assistance at 800-435-0786.
2. Refer to “Typical Measurements” for specific mea-
surement instructions.
3. The meter does not compensate for manufacturing
tolerances of various cable manufacturers.
4. Before making a measurement, ensure the following:
• Cable conductors have been cleaned with
abrasive material to remove oxide layer and other
contaminants.
• Kelvin clip jaws are clean.
• Both the cable and meter are at the same
temperature.
• Cable conductor material must be either aluminum
or copper.
5. To measure odd cable sizes:
• AWG (5, 7, 9, 11 AWG, etc.) (CLM-1000): When
measuring odd numbered cable sizes, set the rotary
switch to the next smaller size, and multiply the
reading by 1.261.
For example, to measure a 9 AWG length of cable,
set the rotary switch to 10 AWG. Then multiply the
reading by 1.261 to get the length.
• kcmil (CLM-1000): When measuring odd
numbered cable sizes, set the rotary switch to
1000kcmil. Divide kcmil size of cable being mea-
sured by 1000, and then multiply this number by the
meter’s length reading.
For example, 477 kcmil cable is being measured.
The multiplier becomes 477/1000 = 0.477. Take
the value shown with the rotary switch in the 1000
kcmil position and multiply it by 0.477 to get the
length.
• mm2(CLM-1000E): When measuring odd
numbered cable sizes, set the rotary switch to
500mm2. Divide mm2size of cable being mea-
sured by 500, and then multiply this number by the
meter’s length reading.
For example, 289 mm2cable is being measured.
The multiplier becomes 289/500 = 0.596. Take the
value shown with the rotary switch in the 500 mm2
position and multiply it by 0.596 to get the length.
Programming Procedure
1. Calibrate meter according to “Calibration Procedure.”
2. Obtain known length of cable between 30 ft and
320ft (9 m and 97.5 m) long. Cable must be alumi-
num or copper.
3. Set rotary switch to desired location. Programmable
location appears on the LCD. If the location has
already been programmed, “OL” appears on the LCD.
If it has not, “no” appears.
Note: Data in a programmed location can be deleted.
With Kelvin clips removed from cable and rotary
switch turned to location to delete, press MEM button.
4. Press CAL button.
5. Enter the known length of cable in feet or meters.
Useqp arrows.
6. Select “Cu” or “Al”.
7. Connect Kelvin clips to the conductor on each end of
the cable.
8. Press MEM button. “MEM” and dashes appear on the
LCD. After approximately 1 second, “donE” appears
on the LCD if programming was successful. If “FAIL”
appears, check connections and repeat procedure.

Replacing the Batteries
1. Turn the unit OFF. Remove the Kelvin clip leads from
the meter.
2. Remove one screw from the battery access door and
remove it.
3. Replace the batteries, making sure to observe the
polarity.
4. Replace cover and continue with normal operation.
Cleaning and Storage
Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild
detergent; do not use abrasives or solvents.
If the meter will not be used for periods longer than
60days, remove the batteries and store them separately.

Cómo utilizar las distintas funciones
• :Pulsarlo momentáneamente para ENCENDER
la luz de fondo. Una vez encendida, vuelva a pulsar
el botón para APAGAR la luz de fondo. La luz de
fondo se apagará automáticamente después de
aproximadamente 30 segundos a fin de preservar la
vida útil de la batería.
• FT/M: Pulsarlo momentáneamente para seleccionar las
unidades de medición de longitud. En la pantalla LCD,
“ft” indica pies y “m” indica metros.
• CAL: Es preciso calibrar el medidor cada vez que se
ENCIENDE. Consulte en la sección “Operación” una
descripción completa del proceso de calibración.
• Esc: Pulsarlo para salir del proceso de programación.
• MEM: El botón se utiliza para la función de

Operación
Peligro de descarga eléctrica:

Procedimiento de calibración
Cada vez que se ENCIENDA el medidor, se debe calibrar la
unidad antes de cada uso.
1. Consulte la sección “Mediciones más comunes”
en relación con el diagrama de configuración de la
calibración.
2. Asegúrese que la barra de calibración y las mordazas
de los ganchos Kelvin estén limpias.
3. Mueva el interruptor giratorio de la posición OFF
(Apagado) a la posición Ω.
4. Asegúrese que ambos conductores para el conjunto
rojo de ganchos Kelvin estén enchufados en el
terminal rojo en el medidor.
Asegúrese que ambos conductores para el conjunto
negro de ganchos Kelvin estén enchufados en el
terminal negro en el medidor.
5. Coloque cada gancho Kelvin en la barra de
calibración. Mueva los ganchos para que queden tan
cercanos entre sí como sea posible.
6. Pulse el botón CAL. Aparecen guiones en la pantalla
LCD. A continuación aparecerán “MEM” y “donE” en
la pantalla de LCD. Entonces “RES” en la pantalla
LCD indica que el medidor ha regresado al modo
resistencia. Si en la pantalla de LCD aparece “FAIL”
y además suena el zumbador, es porque hubo un
problema con el proceso de calibración. APAGUE el
medidor y regrese al paso 1 de este procedimiento.
7. Después de la finalización con éxito del proceso de
calibración, el medidor ya está listo para la operación
normal.
Procedimiento de operación
1. Si la unidad no funciona como debería en un circuito
que se sabe está funcionando perfectamente,
reemplace las baterías. Si la unidad aún sigue sin
funcionar como debería, llame a Greenlee al
800-435-0786 para obtener asistencia técnica.
2. Consulte la sección “Mediciones más comunes” en
relación con las instrucciones específicas para cada
tipo de medición.
3. El medidor no compensa las tolerancias de
fabricación de diversos fabricantes de cables.
4. Antes de efectuar una medición, asegúrese de lo
siguiente:
• Se han limpiado los conductores del cable con
material abrasivo para eliminar la capa de óxido y
otros contaminantes.
• Las mordazas de los ganchos Kelvin estén limpias.
• El cable y el medidor tienen la misma temperatura.
• El material del conductor del cable debe ser
aluminio o cobre.
5. Para medir calibres impares de cables:
• AWG (5, 7, 9, 11 AWG, etc.) (CLM-1000): Al medir
calibres de cables con numeración impar, ajuste
el interruptor giratorio en la posición del calibre
próximo menor, y multiplique la lectura por 1,261.
Por ejemplo, para medir una longitud de cable
9AWG, coloque el interruptor giratorio en 10 AWG.
Acontinuación, multiplique la lectura por 1,261 para
obtener la longitud.
• kcmil (CLM-1000): Al medir calibres de cables
con numeración impar, coloque el interruptor
giratorio en la posición 1000 kcmil. Divida el calibre
kcmil del cable sometido a medición entre 1000,
y después multiplique este número por el valor de
lectura de longitud del medidor.
Por ejemplo, se intenta medir cable 477 kcmil.
Elmultiplicador se convierte en 477/1000 = 0,477.
Tome el valor que se muestra con el interruptor
giratorio en la posición 1000 kcmil y multiplíquelo
por 0,477 para obtener la longitud.
• mm2(CLM-1000E): Al medir calibres de cables
con numeración impar, coloque el interruptor
giratorio en la posición 500mm2. Divida el calibre
mm2del cable sometido a medición entre 500, y
después multiplique este número por el valor de
lectura de longitud del medidor.
Por ejemplo, se intenta medir cable 289 mm2.
Elmultiplicador se convierte en 289/500 = 0,596.
Tome el valor que se muestra con el interruptor
giratorio en la posición 500 mm2y multiplíquelo por
0,596 para obtener la longitud.

Procedimiento de programación
1. Calibre el medidor según el Procedimiento de
calibración.
2. Obtenga el valor conocido de longitud de cable
entre 9 m y 97,5 m de longitud. El cable debe ser de
aluminio o cobre.
3. Coloque el interruptor giratorio en la posición
deseada. La ubicación programable aparece en la
pantalla LCD. Si la ubicación ya ha sido programada,
“OL” aparecerá en la pantalla LCD. Si no es así,
aparece “no”.
Nota: Los datos de una ubicación programada se
pueden borrar. Después de extraer los ganchos Kelvin
del cable y el interruptor giratorio dirigido hacia la
ubicación a borrar, pulse el botón MEM.
4. Pulse el botón CAL.
5. Ingrese el valor conocido de longitud de cable en pies
o metros. Use las flechas qp.
6. Seleccione “Cu” o “Al”.
7. Conecte los ganchos Kelvin al conductor en cada
extremo del cable.
8. Oprima el botón MEM. A continuación aparecerá
“MEM” y guiones en la pantalla LCD. Al cabo de
1segundo aproximadamente, aparecerá “donE” en
la pantalla LCD si la programación fue exitosa. Si
aparece “FAIL”, verifique las conexiones y repita el
procedimiento.

Mantenimiento

Reemplazo de las baterías

3. Cambie las baterías y verifique la polaridad, limpieza y
almacenamiento.
4. Vuelva a colocar la cubierta y continúe con la
operación normal.
Limpieza y almacenamiento
Limpie periódicamente la caja utilizando un paño húmedo
y detergente suave; no utilice abrasivos ni solventes.
Si el medidor no se utilizará durante períodos de más de
60 días, extraiga la batería y guárdela separadamente.

Description
Les indicateurs de longueur de câble Greenlee CLM-1000
et CLM-1000E sont des appareils de contrôle portables
offrant les capacités de mesure suivantes : résistance,
température et longueur. Ils peuvent s’utiliser en tant
que micro-ohmmètres pour mesurer avec précision
les résistances de liaison. La fonction principale de
ces appareils est le calcul de la longueur d’un câble
en fonction de son matériau, de sa température et de
son diamètre. Le type de matériau du câble peut être le
cuivre ou l’aluminium nus. Il y a 20 diamètres de câble
préprogrammés et huit programmables (les huit positions
programmables du sélecteur ne permettent pas de
préciser le nombre de brins).
Les positions préprogrammées du sélecteur sur le
CLM-1000 sont :
