terminal with a built in GPS tracking system, to which this declaraon relates, is in
conformity with the following standards and/or other normave documents:

For the sake of safety and protecon, please read the user guide before you
aempt to use the Thuraya SeaStar system. In parcular, read this safety secon
carefully. Keep this safety informaon where you can refer to it if necessary.
Westone Communicaons co. ltd, assumes no liability for the customer's failure to
comply with these requirements.
The following general safety precauons must be observed during all phases of
operaon, service and repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with these
precauons or with specific warnings elsewhere in this user guide violates safety
standards of design, manufacture and intended use of the equipment.
WARNING
During transmission, the antenna in the system radiates high power levels of radio
frequency. This radiaon is considered health hazardous to any personnel that
comes very close to the antenna.
Antenna Radiaon Warning
It is important to maintain a separaon distance from the transming antenna to
any personnel of at least 30cm.
Service
User access to the interior of the terminal is not allowed. Only qualified personnel
authorized by its manufacturer may perform service. Failure to comply with this
rule will result in the warranty being void.
Grounding and Antenna Cables
The terminal has a grounding stud to ground the terminal to the hull of the ship by
using a ground cable.
The antenna cables are shielded and they should not be affected by any magnec
field. It is recommended to avoid the cables being installed in parallel with any AC
wiring as it may possibly cause malfuncon of the equipment.
Ship's Power Supply
The Thuraya SeaStar (including to the Terminal and the Acve Antenna) standby
power is only less than 10W, and the standard operaon average power
consumpon is only 16W. When low signal strength, burst power may beyond
20W. For the steady operaon, the input voltage for SeaStar System needs a 36W
power supply (may be 12V DC@3A or 24V [email protected]). It is recommended to use a
24V DC power line, if available on the ship.
In case of unavailability of a 12V or 24V DC power line on the ship, on external
AC/DC power supply (110/220V AC to 24V DC @ Min 1.5A) can be used, please

contact the vendor when you need it.
To ensure adequate cooling of the terminal, 5cm of unobstructed space must be
maintained around all sides of the unit except the boom side. The ambient
temperature range of the below decks terminal is: -15°C to +55°C.
Equipment Venlaon
The equipment should not be operated in the presence of flammable gases or
fumes as well as any explosive atmosphere. Operaon of any electrical equipment
in such an environment constutes a safety hazard.
Obtaining Licensing for Thuraya SeaStar System
Under rights given under ITU Radio Regulaons, local telecommunicaons
administraons establish and enforce naonal rules and regulaons governing
types of emissions, power levels, and other parameters that affect the purity of
signal, which may be radiated in the various frequency bands of the radio spectrum.
To legally operate the Thuraya SeaStar system, it is necessary to obtain permission
from the local telecommunicaons regulatory authories of the country you are
operang from. Using your equipment in any country without permission causes
you to run the risk of confiscaon of the equipment by the local authories. The
normal procedure to bring such equipment into another country is to apply for a
license before travel. If a license has not been obtained before travel, the
equipment may be put in to storage by local authories unl such me license is
obtained.

1. INTRODUCTION
The Thuraya SeaStar is a voice satellite terminal with a built-in GPS tracking system
specially designed for reliable performance in the harsh marime environment.
This affordable, easy-to-install and user-friendly terminal enables users to make
satellite voice calls to normal PSTN phones, mobile phones and other satellite
phones through the Thuraya satellite network.
The SeaStar supports SMS services through its easy-to-use menu on the large color
LCD screen on the terminal. An Alert buon is available to nofy pre-configured
contacts during an emergency. When the Alert buon is acvated, the SeaStar will
send a pre-determined SOS message which includes the me-stamped GPS
coordinates of the posion to a maximum of five preset contacts for emergency
response. The terminal has a RJ11 socket for connecng to an analogue phone or
PBX. A RJ45 socket is available to provide GmPRS data via LAN cable to a laptop or
PC to give access to the internet.

Serial Port: This is a 3 wires (TX, RX and ground) RS232 port. It is for
communicaon module maintenance and Firmware upgrade.

RJ-45 Port: This is a port which a computer could use GmPRS to surf the
Internet by a single network cable
Power ON/OFF: This is the system power On/Off switch.

SAT Port: SAT ANT port is used for the physical connecon - via an RF cable
between the satellite acve Antenna unit and the Base Terminal.

The Antenna unit has two RF (female) connectors at its base. One connector is the
SAT signal port (N-type connector), and the other is the GPS signal port (TNC
connector).
SAT RF Cable: The SAT RF cable is 25 meters in length and is terminated with
an N-type (male) connector at each end
GPS RF Cable: The GPS RF cable is 25 meters in length and is terminated with
a TNC (male) connector at each end

2. GETTING STARTED
Before proceeding, please refer to “SeaStar Installaon Guide” and install the
Thuraya SeaStar system and connect all the cables according
The Thuraya SeaStar system requires a valid SIM card to access the satellite
network and configure the sengs of the Base Terminal
Follow these steps to install the SIM card:
Installing the SIM card
1. Flip down the SIM card cover
2. With the SIM card's gold contact facing down, posion the card as indicated
and slide it into the slot
3. Ensure that the SIM card is correctly located
4. Close the SIM card cover

Follow these steps to power up the SeaStar

The Modem is inializing ( status indicator should be on) this shall be
replaced by the modem is inialized ( status indicator) and then The
Terminal is registered for CS (Voice) service ( status indicator) this shall
then be replaced by signal strength indicator shown below.
Making the first voice call
Note:
Before making a voice call, please make sure that:
Signal strength could be usable (
status indicator should be on)
The Thuraya SIM card isn’t inside ( status indicator should be on)

Note:
If the security code open and user change another card or do not insert SIM
card, SeaStar will turn into the protected mode and display the figure below.
When this is displayed, that means no SIM card insert or the wrong SIM card
has been inserted, please restore the original SIM card and restart SeaStar to
go out of the protected mode.
Handset locking mechanism:
When placed on hook, the handset is locked onto the cradle. When going
off-hook (picking up the handset from the cradle), please make sure to push
the handset forward before liing it off the cradle
When you are replacing the handset, make sure it is locked onto the cradle

Using the Main Menu
You can access the Main Menu by pressing the Le Funcon key or
Key from the Home screen.
The Main Menu includes 6 menu opons with each menu opon having their
respecve sub-menus.
You can use the 4-Way navigaon buons to navigate to the desired menu opon
and press to confirm your selecon. You can also end the menu or
submenus and return to the Home screen at any me by pressing the Home
key or connuous pressing the Right Funcon key many mes.

Note:
For voice calls and SMS, you may also use '+'by pressing and holding the
key instead of “00” at the beginning of dialed number string as
an alternave('+' <country code> <phone number>).
To end the call, re-place the handset on the cradle
To accept an incoming call, li up the handset from the cradle
Receiving a call
When there is an incoming call, the SeaStar terminal will:
Ring
The calling party's number will be displayed on the screen
The corresponding name of contact will be displayed if the number is stored in
the contacts
To answer an incoming call, Pick up the handset from the cradle or if connected the
analogue phone.

to return and cancel the save.
The Contacts menu allows you to store, retrieve and update names and phone
numbers of your contacts.
Press Le Funcon key, there are three opons: Add Contacts, Search,
Delete Contacts. Choose Contacts and press key to edit Contacts detail.

Press call or send SMS could achieve corresponding funcon.

Messages Menu
Aer entering into messages menu, the user can enter into message preview
interface, the interface will display recently send and receive messages. The
messages are divided into different sessions based on different contacts. Pressing
le so key to pop up four opons: New message, Search, Delete session, Seng.
Follow these steps to send the first SMS:

Clearing text:
To clear the whole text entry, press and hold the Clear key to clear
the whole text entry.

Funcon key represents cancel the delete
SMS service center number could set SMS and email center number, this
funcon belongs to advanced seng opon, it is strongly recommended
that the user should not modify it
SMS Send delivery report funcon, default is close (icon), press key
to enable the opon, and press to disenable the opon. The
enable and disenable is a cycle
