1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurfaceanddisengagethe
blade-controlswitch.
2.Engagetheparkingbrake,stoptheengine,removethe
key,andwaitforallmovingpartstostopbeforeleaving
theoperatingposition.
3.Removethemowerdeckfromthemachine.Refer
totheRemovingtheMowersectionintheOperator's
ManualortheappropriatesectionoftheServiceManual.

Thebelttensionspringisundertensionwhen
installedandcancausepersonalinjury.
Becarefulwhenremovingthemowerbeltand
deck.
4.Slidethemowerdeckoutfromunderneaththe

outlinemarkedontheskid.
5.Drillahole(9/32inch)intherightskidatthe
center-punchedlocation.
6.Positionthelongerlegofthemountingbracketagainst
theskid.
Note:Alignthemountingbracketholewiththehole
drilledintheskid.
7.Firmlyattachthebracketusingawasher-headscrew
(self-threading).
8.Locatetheleftskidontherearfacingsideofthe
mowerdeckasshowninFigure1.
9.Repeatsteps2through6fortheleftskid.
10.Ensurethattheslotsinthestripingbracketalignwith
theholesintheshortlegofthemountingbrackets
(Figure1).

1.Alignthestripingbracketsothatthemountingange
isupandfacingthemowerdeck(thewiperangeis
downandawayfromthedeck)asshowninFigure1.
2.Alignthetopoftheslotinthemountingangeofthe
stripingbracketwiththeholeintheshortlegofeach
mountingbracketinstalledontheskids(Figure1).
3.Securethestripingbrackettoeachmountingbrackets
withtheself-threading,washer-headscrews(Figure1).

Note:Squealingwhenthebeltisrotating,bladesslipping
whencuttinggrass,frayedbeltedges,burnmarks,andcracks
aresignsofawornmowerbelt.Replacethemowerbeltifany
oftheseconditionsareevident.

Operation
AdjustingtheHeight
Important:Applyingexcessivedownwardpressurewith
thestripingbarmaydamageturfandthestripingkit.
Toavoiddamagetolandscapingandthestripingbar,
avoidclosetrimmingwiththestripingkitinstalled.
Replacethewiperyearly,ormoreoftenaswearrequires.
Avoidobstaclesthatcandamagethekit.Temporarily
liftthedecktothetransportpositionwhenperforming
turnsormovinginreverse.
Raisethemowerdeckwiththestripingkitinstalled
tothetransportpositionwhennotinusetoavoid
damagingthewiper.
Forbestresultsusingnormalstriping,setthebottomedge
ofthewiperto1/2-1/4inchbelowthebottomofthedeck
(Figure4).
Tochangethestripingeffectofthemower,raiseorlower
thewiperheightbyadjustingthestripingbracketposition
asfollows:
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurfaceanddisengagethe
blade-controlswitch.
2.Engagetheparkingbrake,stoptheengine,removethe
key,andwaitforallmovingpartstostopbeforeleaving
theoperatingposition.
3.Loosenthe2washer-headscrews(self-threading)that
securethestripingbracket(Figure4).
4.Adjustthestripingbracketpositionasfollows:
•Increasethestripingeffectbyloweringthestriping
bracketuntilyouattainthedesiredstripingeffect
(Figure4).
•Decreasethestripingeffectbyraisingthestriping
bracketuntilyouattainthedesiredstripingeffect
(Figure4).
5.Ensurethatthestripingbracketisadjustedlevelto
theground.
6.Tightenthe2washer-headscrews(self-threading)that
securethestripingbracket(Figure4).

AchievingDistinctiveStriping
GrassConditionandType
•Limpgrassfoundinnorthernareasusuallyproducemore
stripingcontrast.
•Stiffgrassfoundinsouthernareasusuallyproduceless
stripingcontrast.
•Transitionzonegrassesfoundinthenarrowbeltregion
canproducemorestripingcontrastinsomeareasand
someportionsofthegrowingseason,whileproducing
lessstripingcontrastinotherareasorportionsofthe
season.
•Somegrasstypesproducebetterstripingcontrastwhen
mowingshort.Othergrasstypesormoisturecontentof
thegrasscanprovidebettercontrastwhenmowingata
long/tallheightofcut.Experimentwithwhatworksbest
inyoursituation.
SunPosition
Thisishowthelightisreectedonthegrass.
•Mowingpatternsthatgenerallyruneast-westhavea
greatercontrastthannorth-southpatterns.
•Thestripingpatterncontrastislessvisiblearoundnoon
andmorevisibleinmorningsandafternoons.

ViewingPosition
Thegrassthatisbenttowardyouappearsdarker,andthe
grassthatisbentawayfromyouappearslighter.
•Mowingpatternsthatgenerallyareparalleltoaroadhave
greatercontrastwhenviewedapproachingorleavingthe
property.Thecontrastofstripingislessvisiblewhen
lookingacrossthemowingdirection.
•Ifthepropertyhasafocalpointoraviewinglocation,
mowinginapatternthatisgenerallytoandfromthe
observationpointcanbebenecial.
LawnCondition
•Largeatareasusuallyprovidebetterstripingcontrast
thanonslopesorareaswithalotoftrimmingandedging.
•Mowinginmorningdewcanproducegoodstriping
contrast.
•Double-cutmowingandmowingasecondpassata
1/2inchlowerheightofcutcanproducegoodstriping
contrast.
MowingMode
•Sidedispersalofclippingscanhidestripingandreduce
thecontrasteffect.
•Baggingcandisplayheavywheeltracksandreducethe
effectofstriping.
•Mulchingoftendisplaysexcellentcontrastandenhances
theeffectofstriping.
Landscape
•Themowingareasizehasaneffectonthenal
appearance.Largeareascanlookbetterwhenmowed
withalargemower.Smallareasmaynotlookrightwhen
cutwithalargemower.
•Largeareaswithoccasionaltreesorotherobstructions
oftenlookbestwhenthemowingpatternappearstogo
throughtheobstruction.Forexample,itcanlookbest
forapatterntomatchandcontinueonthefarsideofa
smallpond.Adifferentcrosscutpatternonthefarside
ofapondmaynotbevisible.
•Someareaslookbestwithlongstraightlinesofstriping
mowingpatternalignedwithapropertyedge.Someareas
lookbestwithadiamondpattern,whereneitherstraight
lineisalignedwiththepropertyedge.Propertieswith
rollinghillsidesorpondscanlookbestwithaowing
curvesstripingpattern.Adistinctivefeaturelikeasmall
pondcanbehighlightedandenhancedbyaradialpattern
orbyaringpattern.
TrainingtheLawnforStriping
•Onanewpropertyduringweeks1and2,youmayneed
tofollowtheexactsamepatternanddirectioninthesame
wheeltracks.Thisbeginstrainingthegrasstobendin
thedesireddirection.
•Onweek3,useacross-grainstripingpattern.
•Onweeks4and5,repeattheoriginalpattern.After
youestablishtheprimarystriping-patterngrain,you
mayalternatethepatterneachweektoestablisha
checkerboardoraplaidstyleofmowingpattern.
•Donotmowintheexactsamepatterneveryweek.This
causecompactionsinwheeltracksandmayproduceruts
ordepressionsalongthewheeltracks.
TurningwhileUsingtheStripingKit
•Raisethedeckwhenturning.Stripingisgenerallynot
enhancedbyendturns.
•Raisingthedeckreducesblendingtheendsofthepattern.
DrivingtheMachinetoDifferentCutting
Areas
•Raisethedeckanddrivealongapreviouscutpathto
transportfrom1areaofthepropertytoanothersection.
•Drivingacrossthepatterncandisturbthepattern.
FollowingAllGeneralMowingCommon
Practices
•Mowtheperimetertoestablishaboundary.
•Whensidedischarging,directtheclippingsawayfrom
walks,drives,owerbeds,buildings,andvehicles.If
thedischargethrowsclippingsalongdistance,mow
additionalpassestoavoidunwantedcleanupofclippings.
•Avoidexcessivetrimming.Drivingbackandforthor
frequentforwardandreversemaneuversaroundan
obstaclecompressesthegrassanddisturbtheprofessional
appearanceofanicejob.
•Followallsafemowingpracticesasdescribedinthe
Operator’sManual.Donotletthestripingpatterncause
youtomowintoahazardoussituation.
