All of us at Toro want you to be completely satisfied
with your new product, so feel free to contact your
local Authorized Service Dealer for help with service,
genuine Toro parts, or other information you may
require.
Whenever you contact your Authorized Service
Dealer or the factory, always know the model and
serial numbers of your product. These numbers will
help the Service Dealer or Service Representative
provide exact information about your specific
product. You will find the model and serial number
decal located in a unique place on the product
(Fig. 1).
For your convenience, write the product model and
serial numbers in the space below.

Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate
and maintain your product correctly. Reading this
manual will help you and others avoid personal injury
and damage to the product. Although Toro designs,
produces and markets safe, state-of-the-art products,
you are responsible for using the product properly
and safely. You are also responsible for training
persons who you allow to use the product about safe
operation.
The Toro warning system in this manual identifies
potential hazards and has special safety messages that
help you and others avoid personal injury, even death.
DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION are signal
words used to identify the level of hazard. However,
regardless of the hazard, be extremely careful.
DANGER signals an extreme hazard that will cause
serious injury or death if the recommended
precautions are not followed.
WARNING signals a hazard that may cause serious
injury or death if the recommended precautions are
not followed.
CAUTION signals a hazard that may cause minor or
moderate injury if the recommended precautions are
not followed.
Two other words are also used to highlight
information. “Important” calls attention to special
mechanical information and “Note” emphasizes
general information worthy of special attention.

to gain knowledge of the appliance, it is essential
that you or any other operator of the appliance
read and understand the contents of this manual
before operating the appliance. Pay particular
attention to the safety alert symbol which
means CAUTION, WARNING OR DANGER —
“personal safety instruction.” Read and
understand the instruction because it has to do

1. Read and understand the contents of this manual
before operating the trimmer. Become familiar
with all controls and know how to stop it
quickly.
2. Keep everyone, especially children and pets,
away from area of operation. Never allow
children to operate the appliance. It is not a toy.
Never allow adults to operate unit without first
reading Operator’
s Manual.
3. Always wear safety goggles or other suitable eye
protection when using trimmer. Always use face
or dust mask if operation is dusty.
4. Never operate the appliance in wet or damp
conditions. DO NOT USE IN THE RAIN.
5. Do not charge appliance in rain, or in wet
locations.
6. Inspect area thoroughly where trimmer will be
used. Pick up any debris or objects that could be
entangled in trimmer or picked up by trimmer
and thrown. Keep area of operation clear of all
persons, particularly small children and pets.
7. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewelry. They can catch in moving parts. Always
wear substantial footwear and long pants. Wear
protective hair covering to contain long hair.
8. Use the right appliance—Do not use the
appliance for any job except that for which it
was intended such as cutting grass and small
weeds.
9. Do not invert trimmer while trimmer is in
operation. Do not push down the trigger release
and depress the ON/OFF switch while trimmer is
in inverted position.
10. Avoid unintentional starting. Do not carry
trimmer with finger on switch.
11. Do not force the trimmer. It operates better and
safer at the rate for which it was designed.
12. Use only in daylight or with good artificial light.
Always be sure of your footing. Keep a firm
hold on the handle and walk, never run.
13. Stay Alert – Watch what you are doing. Use
common sense. Do not operate appliance when
you are tired.
14. Stop the motor whenever you leave the trimmer,
before cleaning the housing, and when making
any repairs or inspections.
15. When not in use, store your trimmer in a dry
place – high or locked up out of the reach of
children.
16. Keep all fasteners tight to ensure the appliance is
in safe working condition.
17. Never operate without factory installed guards or
other protective safety devices in place.

18. Do not put hands or feet near or under rotating
parts. Keep clear at all times.
19. If the appliance should start to vibrate
abnormally, stop the motor and check
immediately for the cause. Vibration is generally
a warning of trouble.
20. Do not operate your appliance after it has been
dropped or damaged. Return it to your nearest
Authorized Toro Service Dealer for inspection
and repair.
21. Don’t Overreach–Keep proper footing and
balance at all times when operating the trimmer.
22. Remove or disconnect battery before servicing,
cleaning or removing material from the
gardening appliance.

performance and to reduce the risk of injury.

24. Check Damaged Parts – Before further use of the
appliance, a guard or other part that is damaged
should be carefully checked to determine that it
will operate properly and perform its intended
function. Check for alignment of moving parts,
binding of moving parts, breakage of parts,
mounting, and any other condition that may
affect its operation. A guard or other part that is
damaged should be properly repaired or replaced
by an authorized service center unless indicated
elsewhere in this manual.
25. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from oil and
grease.
26. CAUTION–Cutting knife on grass shield is
sharp and care should be taken when cleaning
and handling.
27. WARNING–To reduce risk of electrical shock
or fire, replace charger immediately if case or
cord is damaged.
28. When servicing use only identical replacement
parts. Use only Toro charger (73–5410) and Toro
battery (33–6650).

you that the BA TTER Y used in this product:

The BA TTER Y in your trimmer is sealed. Under normal usage it will

Assembly
Trimmer should appear as shown in Figure 1 when
fully assembled.
1. If connector plug has retracted into the trimmer
housing, use the hang tag string to pull the
connector out of the housing (Fig. 2).
2. Grasp handle tube firmly with one hand and the
connector plug extending out of housing with the
other (Fig. 3).
3. Connect plug in battery housing with connector
plug extending out of tube (Fig. 4).

4. After connectors are securely connected, remove
hang tag from connector plug (Fig. 2).
5. Grasp handle tube firmly and slide tube into
battery housing. Make sure the cutter shield is in
the proper operating position. Align screw holes
in housing with grooves in tube (Fig. 5).
6. Secure battery housing to tube using the (2)
screws and hex nuts supplied (Fig. 6).
Note: Rear screw installation will be easier if
you use a blunt object such as a pencil
eraser to hold the rear nut in place
while installing the screw.
7. Remove tape from cutting knife on grass shield.

Battery Charging
Your trimmer arrives with a partially charged battery.
Charge your trimmer battery immediately after
unpacking and reading your operating instructions.
THE BATTERY SHOULD BE CHARGED FOR 24
HOURS BEFORE ITS FIRST USE.
Note: Battery may not reach its maximum
performance until approximately five
full charge–dischar
ge cycles.

Tips For Maximizing Battery Life and
Performance
1. Do not store trimmer with battery in discharged
condition.
2. Charging time of 24 hours will restore a
discharged battery.
3. Your Toro trimmer is designed with over-charge
protection. It is recommended that you keep
charging for the entire cutting season.
4. Store fully charged trimmer in cool, dry location.
Do not store trimmer in direct sunlight or near
furnace.
5. For the winter or for idle periods of more than a
month, disconnect the charger from the wall
outlet and trimmer after the trimmer is fully
charged. Do not store the trimmer with the
charger plugged in. Storing trimmer in a warm
area will decrease life of battery. If trimmer must
be stored in a warm area, charge battery for 24
hours every 2–3 months when not in use.
6. IMPORTANT–Use only the Toro charger Part
No. 73–5410 supplied. Using a different charger
may damage the battery.
Battery Charging Procedure

•Charge battery in a well-ventilated area
away from sparks, flames and smoking.
1. Insert charger plug into receptacle located on the
power case (Fig. 7).
2. Hang trimmer upright from a solid hook (Fig. 8)
or lay trimmer on its side on a flat, solid surface
away from combustible liquids, gasses or
materials. Position trimmer on side as shown in
Figure 9.
3. Plug charger into 120 volt wall outlet. Be sure
outlet is turned on.
Note: The charger may become warm to the
touch. This is normal and does not
indicate a problem.
4. After battery has been properly charged, remove
charger from wall outlet then remove charge
plug from trimmer receptacle.
Cutting Line
Note: The cutting line for your trimmer is a
special monofilament line. Your
trimmer comes complete with a supply
of this line already wound onto the
spool.
1. To avoid line tangle during shipment, the tip of
the monofilament line has been taped to the head
assembly (Fig. 10). The tape must be removed
before operation.
2. After each use, either retaping or looping the line
through the eyelet will prevent unraveling of line
on spool (Fig. 11).

•Always wear safety goggles or other
suitable eye protection, long pants and
shoes while operating trimmer.
•Keep people and pets away from trimming
area.
Starting/Stopping
1. Balance the trimmer in one hand using the
U-shaped handle. Operate the trigger release and
the switch with the other hand (Fig. 12).
2. To operate the trigger release and switch, press
the trigger release down with the thumb and
depress the switch on the inside of the handle.
With the switch depressed, you may let go of the
trigger release and the trimmer will continue to
run. The switch must be depressed in order for
the trimmer to run.
3. Trimmer will stop seconds after switch is
released.
Trimming T ips
Your trimmer will cut grass and small weeds in
difficult and hard to reach places. However, you will
most likely experience some line breakage during
your first few uses. As you learn the trimming
techniques, you will be able to cut areas around trees,
shrubs, foundation walls, fences, sidewalks, patios,
etc., with minimal line wear or line breakage.
1. Inspect area to be trimmed for any wire, cord, or
string-like matter which could become entangled
in the rotating line. Also pick up any objects or
debris that could be thrown by the trimmer.
2. Trim only when grass and weeds are dry.
3. Hold the power pack case in a position which
slightly tips cutting head down at an angle to the
grass to be trimmed as shown in Figure 14.
4.
DO NOT FORCE THE UNIT .Allow the very
tip of the nylon line to do the cutting (especially
along walls) (Fig. 13). Cutting with more than
the tip will reduce cutting efficiency and
overload the motor.
The tip of the cutting line will wear during use
and cause a reduction in the cutting swath. If the
line is not advanced occasionally, it will wear
down to the drum eyelet. When the trimmer is
stopped, the line tends to relax and may retract
into the cutter head.Should this occur, be sure
to replace the cutting line in the proper position
before restarting the trimmer (page 9, step 2D)
or the line may tangle around the drum.
5. Grass in excess of eight inches tall or small
weeds should be cut by working from the top to
the bottom in small increments to avoid
premature line wear.
6. Whenever possible, cut to your left. When
cutting to the left, the unit’s cutting efficiency is
somewhat better since the line is contacting the
grass as soon as it leaves the guard, and the
clippings are moving away from the operator.
7. Slowly move unit in and out of area being cut,
maintaining unit at desired cutting height. This
can be either a forward-backward or side-to-side
motion as indicated in Figures 14 & 15.
Maintain top speed for best cutting results.
8. The life of your cutting line is dependent upon
following the preceding trimming techniques, as
well as what is being cut, and where the cutting
is being done. For example, line wears faster
when trimming against a foundation wall as
opposed to trimming around a tree.
Some line breakage will occur from moving unit
too fast, from entanglement with foreign matter,
from normal line fatigue, and from attempting to

cut thick, stalky weeds in excess of the unit’s
capability. As cutting line wears, for best
performance, lengthen as indicated in
Lengthening Cutting Line procedure.
9. NEVER drag the trimmer spool on the
ground while trimming (Fig. 16). This causes
unnecessary battery drain and spool wear.
10. After each use, feed out some line to prevent line
from retracting into cutting head.
Lengthening Cutting
Line
1. To lengthen line, firmly tap spool on the ground
while the motor continues to run (Fig. 17). The
line will be fed from the spool and cut off to the
proper length by the cutting knife attached to the
shield.
Remember to keep the trimmer ‘on’ while
lengthening the line. Just tap the trimmer on the
ground; do not hold it on the ground. After the
line feeds out, wait until you hear the line being
cut to the proper length before continuing to
trim.
Note: To help prevent line tangle, tap only
once to lengthen line. If additional line
is required, wait a few seconds before
retapping trimmer head. Do not allow
line to wear too short. Keep line length
at full cutting diameter as much as
possible.
2. Lengthen line only when line has been shortened
by wear. Unnecessary lengthening will waste
line.
Note: The spool may wear during normal use
of the line advance feature and may
require occasional replacement.
Replacement spools are available
through your TORO retailer. See
page 11 for accessories.
Replacing Cutting
Line
Replacement line or prewound replacement spools
can be purchased from your local Toro retailer. The
cutting line used by Toro is specially formulated for
use on your trimmer. Other line may not provide the
same high quality performance.

•Use of line other than proper monofilament
cutting line could cause personal injury.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
•Wire or other string-like substances could
cut through clothes, skin, etc. and cause
personal injury.
HOW TO AV
OID THE HAZARD
•Do not use any type of wire or other
string-like substance.
•Use only TORO .050” dia. nylon
monofilament cutting line.

• Always be sur e cutting head has completely
stopped rotating before inverting trimmer.
•Never activate trimmer when it is in an
inverted position.

•Cutting knife on grass shield is sharp.

•Contact with cutting knife could cause
personal injury.
HOW TO AV
OID THE HAZARD
• Be car eful when removing spool. Avoid
contact with knife blade.
1. To remove empty spool, insert widest possible
blade screwdriver snugly into one of two
window slots on the spool hub. With screwdriver
pressed firmly into window slot, twist
screwdriver 1/4 turn. Spool will snap off
(Fig. 18).
2. To rewind empty spool, follow the steps below:
A. Hook one end of line into slot on spool,
allowing no more than 1/8” to protrude.
Push end of line all the way to the inner
end of slot. Wind line in direction of arrow
on spool in level rows between spool
flanges (Fig. 19).
Note: Trimmer will not function properly
if line is wound in the wrong
direction or if end of line protrudes
more than 1/8” at inner end of slot.
B. Do not wind line beyond outer edges of
spool; trimmer will not function
properly.
C. Keep line tight on spool by securing in
groove (Fig. 20).
Note:
Before assembly , be sure to thoroughly
clean out drum area and visually
inspect for any damaged or worn parts.
D. The spool and core are keyed and must be
properly aligned when putting spool back
on. With line still retained in spool groove,
thread end of line through eyelet, place
spool onto keyed spool core, and push spool
inward until you hear it click (Fig. 21 &
22). Pull line to free line from groove in
spool. Unwind no more than three inches of
line from spool.
POTENTIAL HAZARD
•An improperly installed spool could fly off
trimmer.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
•Contact with a thrown spool could cause
injury to operator or bystanders.
HOW TO AV
OID THE HAZARD
• Be sur e spool is fully secured before
operating the unit. Replace spool if it is
damaged or does not securely snap on core.
•Keep bystanders and pets away from
trimming area.
3. If line should tangle or break at eyelet, refeed the
line through eyelet by pushing spool in as far as
it will go and threading line back through eyelet.
Or you may remove spool completely, refeed the
line through the eyelet, and reassemble spool to
trimmer.

Battery Disposal
Battery Removal
1. Lay unit on a flat table with screw heads in
housing facing upwards.
2. Remove one (1) self-tapping screw from
U-shaped handle. Remove two (2) screws and
nuts and five (5) self-tapping screws from the
power pack cover and lift off cover.
3. Lift the battery out of the power pack and
disconnect the black and red wires from the
battery terminals.
Disposing of Battery
DO NOT PLACE USED BA TTERIES IN YOUR
REGULAR TRASH!

BE COLLECTED, RECYCLED OR DISPOSED
OF IN AN ENVIRONMENT ALLY SOUND
MANNER.
The incineration, landfilling or mixing of sealed lead
(acid) batteries with the municipal solid waste stream
is
PROHIBITED BY LA Win some areas.
Return this battery to a federal or state approved
sealed lead (acid) battery recycler. This may be where
you purchased the battery.
Contact your local waste management officials for
other information regarding the environmentally
sound collection, recycling and disposal of this
battery.
Maintenance

cause personal injury.
HOW TO AV
OID THE HAZARD
• Always be sur e cutting head has completely
stopped rotating before attempting any
maintenance.
1. To keep the exterior clean, just wipe it off with a
damp cloth. Never hose it down.
2. Wipe or scrape clean the drum and spool area
any time there is an accumulation of dirt or
cuttings.
3. Check and tighten all fasteners. If any part is
damaged or lost, repair or replace it.
4. Make sure battery is fully charged and charger is
unplugged from trimmer before storing.
5. Store trimmer in a cool, dry place. Do not store
trimmer in direct sunlight or near a furnace.
Storing trimmer in a warm area will decrease life
of battery. If trimmer must be stored in a warm
area, charge the battery for 24 hours every 2-3
months.
6. Any other servicing should be performed by an
authorized Toro Service Dealer.

workmanship. T o receive a replacement or repair , at Toro’ s option, just return the complete
unit, postage prepaid, to the seller . (U.S. customers ONL Y may return their unit, with proof of
purchase, to any T ORO Master Service Dealer or the T ORO Service Center , 5300 Shoreline
Blvd., Mound, MN 55364.) This warranty covers product defects only . It does not cover
incidental or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion or
limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation may not
apply to you.

Lisez attentivement ce manuel pour vous familiariser
avec l’utilisation et l’entretien correct de votre
produit. La lecture de ce manuel vous aidera, ainsi
que les autres utilisateurs, à éviter des accidents
corporels et des dommages au produit. Bien que Toro
conçoive, fabrique et commercialise des produits

1. Lire et comprendre le contenu de ce manuel
avant d’utiliser le taille–bordures. Veiller à être
familiarisé avec son fonctionnement et à savoir
comment l’arrêter immédiatement.
2. Tenir tout le monde, en particulier les enfants et
les animaux domestiques à l’écart de la zone de
travail. Ne jamais laisser les enfants utiliser
l’appareil. Ce n’est pas un jouet. Ne jamais
permettre aux adultes d’utiliser l’appareil sans
qu’ils aient lu le Manuel de l’utilisateur.
3. Toujours porter des lunettes de sécurité ou une
autre protection oculaire appropriée avant de
travailler avec le taille–bordures. Toujours porter
un masque anti–poussière s’il y a beaucoup de
poussière.
4. Ne jamais utiliser l’appareil dans un
environnement mouillé ou humide. NE PAS
UTILISER SOUS LA PLUIE.
5. Ne pas charger l’appareil sous la pluie ou dans
un endroit humide.
6. Inspecter soigneusement l’endroit où le
taille–bordures doit être utilisé. Ramasser tous
débris et objets susceptibles de se prendre dans
le taille–bordures ou d’être projetés lors de
l’utilisation. Tenir tout le monde à l’écart de la
zone de travail, en particulier les jeunes enfants
et les animaux domestiques.
7. Porter des vêtements appropriés. Ne pas porter
de vêtements amples ou de bijoux risquant de
s’accrocher dans les pièces en mouvement.
Porter toujours des chaussures robustes et des
pantalons longs.
8. Utiliser l’appareil approprié. Ne jamais utiliser
un appareil pour effectuer un travail pour lequel
il n’est pas conçu tels que la tonte de pelouses ou
de mauvaises herbes. Attacher les cheveux longs
et les couvrir d’une protection.
9. Ne pas renverser le taille–bordures lorsqu’il est
en fonctionnement. Ne pas appuyer sur la
sécurité ni sur la gâchette lorsque le
taille–bordures est renversé.
10. Éviter le démarrage accidentel. Ne pas
transporter le taille-bordures avec le doigt sur la
gâchette.
11. Ne pas faire forcer le taille–bordures. Il
fonctionne mieux et de façon plus sûre s’il est
utilisé à la vitesse pour laquelle il a été conçu.
12. Utiliser uniquement de jour ou sous un bon
éclairage artificiel. Toujours se tenir bien en
équilibre. Tenir fermement la poignée et
marcher, ne jamais courir.
13. Arrêter le moteur lorsque le taille–bordures est
laissé sans surveillance, lors du nettoyage du
boîtier et des réparations ou inspections.

14. Rester vigilant – Faire attention à ce qu’on fait.
User de bon sens. Ne pas utiliser l’appareil
lorsqu’on est fatigué.
15. Lorsque le taille–bordures n’est pas utilisé, le
ranger dans un endroit sec, en hauteur ou sous
clé, hors de la portée des enfants.
16. Veiller à ce que tous les dispositifs de fixation
soient bien serrés afin de s’assurer que l’appareil
est en bon état de fonctionnement.
17. Ne jamais utiliser le taille–bordures si les gardes
installées en usine et les autres dispositifs de
sécurité ne sont pas en place.
18. Ne jamais placer les pieds ou les mains près des
pièces en rotation.
19. Si l’appareil commence à vibrer de façon
anormale, arrêter immédiatement le moteur et
chercher la cause du problème. Les vibrations
sont généralement signe de problème.
20. Ne pas utiliser un appareil qui est tombé ou a été
endommagé. Le retourner au concessionnaire
réparateur Toro agréé le plus proche.
21. Ne pas tenter d’atteindre des endroits trop
éloignés –Toujours se tenir bien en équilibre lors
de l’usage du taille–bordures.
22. Déposer ou débrancher la batterie avant tout
entretien, nettoyage ou démontage d’éléments de
l’appareil de jardinage.
23. Entretenir soigneusement l’appareil. Pour une
performance optimale et pour réduire les risques
d’accident, maintenir la tête de coupe et le carter
moteur en bon état de propreté. Se conformer
aux instructions d’entretien de la page 10.
24. Contrôler les pièces endommagées – Avant
d’utiliser à nouveau l’appareil, inspecter
soigneusement les protections ou autres pièces
endommagées pour s’assurer qu’elles sont en
état de fonctionner correctement et de remplir le
rôle pour lequel elles sont destinées. Contrôler le
bon alignement des pièces mobiles, l’absence de
grippage, la présence éventuelle de pièces
cassées, l’état des fixations, et tout autre aspect
suceptible d’affecter le fonctionnement. Les
pièces de garde et autres ayant été endommagées
doivent être correctement réparées ou remplacées
par un réparateur agréé, sauf indication contraire
dans le mode d’emploi.
25. Les poignées doivent être propres et sèches, sans
trace d’huile ni de graisse.
26. ATTENTION–La lame de coupe du pare–herbe
est tranchante. Il convient de procéder avec
précaution lors des opérations de nettoyage et de
l’utilisation.
27. AVERTISSEMENT–pour réduire les risques de
chocs électriques ou d’incendie, remplacer
immédiatement le chargeur si le boîtier ou le
cordon est endommagé.
28. Lors des réparations, utiliser exclusivement des
pièces de rechange identiques. Utiliser
exclusivement un chargeur Toro (73–5410) et
une batterie Toro (33–6650).
