INSTALLING YOUR SET

ANTENNA/CABLE TV CONNECTION
lf your local broadcast signals are strong, an indoor antenna may obtain a clear picture.
lf you cannot get a clear picture with your indoor antenna, you may need to use an
outdoor antenna. Cable TV reception is possible only by connecting a cable supplied by
your local cable operator.
There are two types of antenna cable lead-ins :

Generally, the incoming cable for a cable TV system 9an q9 connected directly to tn9!!

REMOTE CONTROL HAND UNIT
This Remote Control Hand Unit allows you to control the functions of your TV set from 16
feet (5m) away. Always aim your Hand Unit directly at the TV anil be sure there is no
obstruction between the Hand Unit and the TV. The "*" marked function buttons do not
have duplicate locations on your TV set. They can be controlled only by the Remote
Control Hand Unit. For the use of each control, see the pages in brackets.

INSTALL THE BATTERIES
1. Press the battery cover down and slide it backwards to remove it.
2. lnstalltwo "AA" batteries (supplied) as shown. Make sure you match the + and
- signs on each battery to the + and - signs in the Hand Unit.
3. Replace the battery cover until the lock snaps.

HOUU TO FIND YOUR TYPE OF CABLE $YSTEM
1. Set the CATV switch to the "STD" position.
2. Select various channels and confirm whether the channels will lock
immediately with perfect picture. (lf you are having problems with only
channel 5 or 6, you may have an IRC system.)
lf the channels seem to take a few seconds to lock in, your cable system may
be HRC.
3. Set the CATV switch to the "HRC" position and try above procedure again.
TV CHANNELS
This TV will receive the following TV signals:
1. TV: Off the air TV signals (VHF and UHF, non cable)
2. STD: Standard (or IRC: lncremental Related Carrier) cable TV signals
3. HRC: Harmonic Related Carrier cable TV signals
For each of these systems, your TV set has exact frequencies built into it to ensure
precise tuning. For precise tuning, your CATV switch must be set to match to your TV
signal system. The chart on the next page shows channels available in each system
and how your TV displays them. When you connect your W to a cable TV system and if
you are not sure what system they are using, proceed with the following section
"HOW TO FIND YOUR TYPE OF CABLE SYSTEM" or consult with your local cable
company to check if your system is STD(IRC) or HRC.
CATV SWITCH (on the TV set)
Set the CATV switch on the back of the TV to the proper position to match your TV
signal system referring to the chart below. When you change the switch, the mode
display will appear on the screen for approx. 2 seconds.

OPERATION
Generally, the Remote Control Hand Unit is all you need to operate the TV set.
TO TURN THE TV SET ON
Press the POWER button to turn the TV set on. The
picture of the previously tuned channel will appear in a
few seconds. The channel number will be displayed on
the TV screen for a few seconds as shown.
To turn the TV set off, press the button again.
TO SELECT CHANNELS
Using the CHANNEL NUMBER (TEN KEY) buttons.
Use these buttons to directly select the channel you want.
a. To select channels 2 through 9, two methods are available.
Example : To select channel 4.
One-digit entry - Press "4". Channel 4 will be selected within 2 seconds.
Two-digit entry - Press "0" and "4". Channel 4 will be selected immediately.
b. To select channels 10 through 99, the two digit entry must be used.
Example : To select channel 38.
Press "3" and "8", and channel 38 will be selected immediately.
lf second digit is not pressed within two seconds, channel 3 will be selected.
Note : lf you select channels that are not within the capability of this TV set, such as
84, 90 etc., the set will automatically select channel 2.
Using the CHANNEL UP /DOWN V buttons.
Press and release the CHANNEL UP a or DOWN v button. The set will select the next
active channel. lt will not stop at inactive channels.
Press the button again to select the next active channel.
The channel number display will remain on the screen for approx. 2 seconds.
TO ADJUST THE VOLUME
To increase the volume, press the VOLUME
UP A button. To decrease the volume, press
the VOLUME DOWN v button. Press and
hold either button until you obtain the
sound level you wish. You can see what
level by watching the RED bar on the 15-bar
range displayed on the screen as shown.
After you adjust the volume, the display will
remain for approx. 2 seconds.

Note: These buttons will operate as the picture control buttons while the display of
the picture settings is on the screen.

Using the convenient functions with remote only
CH SEARCH BUTTON
Press the CH SEARCH button once to begin the channel search operation. The TV will
automatically cycle through all channels as it will tune in the active channels for a
moment each. Press the cH SEARCH button again while the program you want to
view is on the screen. The search will stop at its channel. The sea-rch operation will
release by pressing the cH RTN. TV/CATV, CHANNEL or powER button.
RECALL BUTTON
To display the channel number on the screen for a few
seconds, press the RECALL button. To erase the display,
press the button again.
CH RTN BUTTON
To return to the last channel that was tuned previously,
press the CH RTN button. This feature is useful when you
wish to monitor two channels. This allows you to
monitor two programs without entering the actual
channel number each time. To use this feature, enter the
two channels you desire one after another (Example : 2
& 6). Then use the CH RTN button to switch back and
forth between 2 and 6. These channels will be retained
even after the TV set has once been turned off.
MUTE BUTTON
To mute the sound temporarily without affecting the
picture, press the MUTE button. The word ,,MUTE-" will
be displayed on fhe screen as shown. This is useful
during telephone calls or other interruptions. To restore
the sound to its previous level, press the button again.
Pressing the POWER, CHANNEL, VOLUME or TVA/|bEO
button also releases the mute condition.
Note :
a lf the power is cut off whire you are viewing the TV, and the power is resupplied, the
TV is turned on automatically by the Lasf Situation Memoryfeaiure. lf the'power is
going to be off for a long time and you might leave your home, remove the power
plug from the wall outlet to prevent the TV from turning on i, yow absence.
o lf a vacant channel is tuned or TV broadcast for a day i"s finished, the TV will
9-uLom{qc9l\t turn off after approx. 15 minutes by the Auto- off feature. However,
if the OFF-TIMER is operaiing, it takes precedence
o lt you are not going to use the Remote Control Hand Unit for a month or more, or if
the batteries are worn out, remove the batteries from the Unit. This will prevent
possible damage from battery leakage.
T.he life expectancy of the battery is approx. 1 year. Do not attempt to charge,
short-circuit or disassemble used batteries.

ADJUSTING FOR THE BEST PICTURE
Use the following function buttons to adiust five picture settings

1. Press the FUNCTION button on the TV set or on the Remote Control Hand Unit once to
display the picture settings on the screen as shown below. The item to be adjusted
will be displayed in red.

You may further press the button to select other items you want to adjust. Each
time you press the button, the item to be adjusted will change in the following

2. Press the CONTROL > (VOLUME a) or CONTROL < (VOLUME v) button white the
display of the PICTURE settings is on the screen to adjust the item you have selected.
You can see what level you have selected by watching the RED bar on the 15-bar
range as shown below.
After you adjust the settings, the display on the screen will remain for approx. 6
seconds.
RESET BUTTON
Press this single button to adjust all five settings (contrast, Brightness, sharpness,
Color and Tint) to the factory set level.
This button will adjust the five settings no matter which color bar displays are on the
screen. The RESET will set the Contrast to the maximum (the right-end Oa4 anO all
other settings at the center.

SETTING THE OFF-TIMER (SLEEPI
This feature allows you to set the TV to turn.off automatically after a time you set
(every 10 minutes, max. 180 minutes). To set the off-timer, i"l.i"itf," Timer mode by
pressing the TIMER button on the Remote contror Huni unii. '
Example: To set the off-timer to turn the TV set off after 150 minutes.

button again.
o You can not serect channers with the Hand Unit in the Timer mode.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE
WARNING : Tv sets use High voltages. Do not try to remove the cabinet back.
Refer servicing to qualifed service personnel.
r To clean the TV screen:
1. First remove the plug from the
power outlet.
2. Use a clean cellulose sponge or
chamois cloth dampened with a
solution of mild detergent and
warm water to clean TV screen and
trim. Do not use too much water on
the TV screen.

Tosh l: 1-erica, lnc. ("TAl" ) and Toshiba Hawaii lnc. ("THl" ) make lhe following limited warranties. These limited warranties extend to
the c. _: -a consumer purchaser or any person receiving this set as a gift from the original consumer purchaser and to no other
purc_:ser or transleree.
Limhcd One (1) Year Warranty
TAL and THI warrant this product and its parts against defects in
maierials or workmansh ip for a period of one ('l ) year aiter the
date of original retail purchase. During this period, TAI and THI
will repair a defective product or part, without charge to you.
You must deliver the entire set to an Authorized TAI/THl Service
Station. You pay for all transportation and insurance charges for
the set to and lrom the Service Station.
Limited Two (2) Year Warranty of Picture Fube
TAI and THI further warrant the picture tube in this product
against detecls in materials or workmanship for a period of two
(2) years after the date of original retail purchase. During this
period, TAI and THI will replace a defective tube, but you must
pay labor charges. You must also deliver the entire set to an
Authorized TAI/THl Service Station. You pay for all transporta-
tion and insurance charges for the product to and from the
Service Station.
Owner's Guidebook and Registration Card
You should read this owner's guidebook thoroughly before
operating this product. You should also insure that your name
and address are on file as owners of a TAI/THI product by

Your Responsibility
The above warranties are subject to the Iollowing conditions:
(1) You must retain your bill of sale or provide other proof ol
purchase.
Completing and mailing in the enclosed registration card
within ten days after the original retail purchase is one way
of providing such other proof of purchase.
(2) All warranty servicing of this product must be made by an
Authorized TAI/THI Service Station.
(3) These warranties are efrective only if the product is
purchased and operated in the U.S.A.
(4) Labo. service charges lor set installation, set up, adjust-
ment of customer controls and installation or repair of
antenna systems are not covered by lhis warranty. Recep-
tion problems caused by inadequale antenna systems are
your responsibility.
(5) Warranties extend only to defects in materials or workman-
ship as limited above and do not extend to any product or
parts which have been lost or discarded by you or to
damage to products or pans caused by misuse, accident,
improper installation, improper maintenance or use in
violation of instructions furnished by us; or to units which
have been altered or modified wilhout authorization of
TAI/THl or to damage to products or parts thereof which
have had the serial number removed, altered, defaced or
rendered illegible.
