TheSFPmoduleiskeyedtoonlybeinstalledoneway.Ifforcedthewrongway,damagemayoccur.
AvoidgettingdustorothercontaminantsintothefiberboreoftheSFPtransceivermodule,asthiswillcause
theopticstonotoperateproperly.
CleantheopticsurfacesoftheopticalfiberbeforeyouplugthembackintotheopticalboresofanotherSFP
module.SeeFiberOpticAssociationCleaningFiberOpticConnectionspage.
Eachportmustmatchthewavelengthspecificationsontheotherendofthecable,andthecablemustnot
exceedthespecifiedcablelengthforreliablecommunications.
Installing an SFP Module
1. AttachanESD‐preventivewriststraptoyourwristandtotheESDgroundconnectororabaremetalsurface
onyourchassis.
2. RemovetheSFPtransceivermodulefromitsprotectivepackaging.Note:Donotremovetheopticalbore
dustplugsuntildirectedtodosoinalaterprocedure.
3. Checktheslotorientation.Notethatforsomedevices(e.g.,S4224)someslotsare“upsidedown”compared
tootherslots.
4. PositiontheSFPdeviceatthedesiredinstallationslot,withthelabelfacingcorrectly.
5. CarefullyslidetheSFPdeviceintotheslot,aligningitwiththeinternalinstallationguides.
6. EnsurethattheSFPdeviceisfirmlyseatedagainsttheinternalmatingconnector.ToverifythattheSFPis
seatedandlatchedproperly.a)GrasptheSFPbythesidesandtrytoremoveitwithoutreleasingthelatch.
b)IftheSFPcannotberemoved,itisinstalledandseatedproperly.IftheSFPcanberemoved,reinsertit
andpressharderwithyourthumb;repeatifnecessaryuntilitislatchedsecurelyintothesocket.
7. ConnectthefibercabletothefiberportconnectoroftheSFPdevice.MakesuretheSFPreleaselatchisin
theup(closed)positionwhenyouinsertthecableconnectorintotheSFP.
8. Removethedustplugfromtheconnector.Savethedustplugforfutureuse.
9. AttachanappropriatecableintotheSFPmoduleport.
10. Attachtheotherendofthecableintotheotherdevice.
11. ObservethestatusLED(s).Seetherelatedmanualfordetails.

Removing an SFP Module
Caution:BecarefulwhenremovingtheSFPorSFP+fromadevice.SomeSFPtransceivermoduletemperatures
mayexceed160°F(70°C)andbetoohottotouchwithbarehands.Note:DonotremoveandreplacetheSFP
modulesmoreoftenthannecessary;excessiveSFPremovingandreplacingcanshortentheSFPsusefullife.
1. AttachanESD‐preventivewriststraptoyourwristandtotheESDgroundconnectororabaremetalsurface
onyourchassis.
2. Forfuturereattachmentoffiber‐opticcables,notewhichconnectorplugissend(TX)andwhichisreceive
(RX).
3. RemovetheSFPtransceivermodule:
a.IftheSFPtransceivermodulehasanactuatorbuttonlatch,gentlypresstheactuatorbuttononthefront
oftheSFPtransceivermoduleuntilitclicksandthelatchmechanismreleasestheSFPtransceivermodule
fromthesocketconnector.Grasptheactuatorbuttonbetweenyourthumbandindexfinger,andcarefully
pulltheSFPtransceivermodulestraightoutofthemoduleslot.
b.IftheSFPtransceivermodulehasabailclasplatch,pullthelatchoutanddowntoejecttheSFP
transceivermodulefromthesocketconnector.Ifthebailclasplatchisobstructedandyoucannotuseyour
indexfingertoopenit,useasmall,flat‐bladescrewdriverorotherlong,narrowinstrumenttoopenthebail
clasplatch.GrasptheSFPtransceivermodulebetweenyourthumbandindexfinger,andcarefullyremoveit
fromthesocket.
4. ReplacetheDustPlug.
5. PlacetheremovedSFP/SFP+transceivermoduleinanantistaticbagorotherprotectivepackage.
