1. Introduction
This User Manual contains instructions for the installation, use and maintenance of the Soprano
Bariatric bed.
The bed described in this User Manual is constructed to the following standards:
EN 60601-2-52:2010
This operating manual will familiarise you with the functions of the bed and in addition describes:
How to set up the bed
How to operate the adjustment controls
How to look after and maintain the bed
Caution: Ultimate Healthcare shall not be liable for any damage or injury caused by
failure to follow the proper instructions as described in this User Manual.
Caution: Before using the bed all staff must familiarise themselves thoroughly with
the various parts and controls as detailed in this User Manual.
This User Manual has been drawn up using information available at the time of printing with regard
to the design and operation of the bed.
We reserve the right to make changes due to technical improvements.

2. Intended Use
The bed is intended to support patients using the moveable sections as and if required within the
following environments;
Nursing home
Home (ground floor recommended)
This bed must not be used for any other purpose than that which it is intended, for example it must
not be used as a standing platform. It is for indoor use only.
This bed is not intended for children under 12 years of age.
Before using the bed a risk assessment should be performed. Please refer to ‘Example of risk
assessment in section 22’ of this manual. This should include but should not be limited to:
The risk of trapping or pinching
The risk of the patient slipping between mattress and the side rails
Unintended operation of the bed
Any limitation of the patient’s ability to operate the bed
Thoroughly read the entire User Manual prior to setting up and using the bed.
Ensure that:
The entire User Manual is read by all persons entrusted with the setting up, operation
or maintenance of the bed.
All persons entrusted with the setting up, operation or maintenance of the bed have
access to this User Manual at all times.
Any damage resulting from non-observance of this User Manual is excluded from the
warranty.
The illustrations contained in this User Manual show examples of how to handle the Ultimate
Healthcare beds and may differ from your particular model.

3.1 Proper use
• The nursing bed, hereinafter simply called “bed”, is designed for disabled or ill people and is suitable
also for home care.
• The bed was not specifically designed for hospital use.
• This bed can be used for treatment with a doctor’s prescription and it can be used for diagnosis, care
or observation of the patient.
• This bed does not have any special options suitable for an equipotential connection. Make sure to take
this aspect into account before connecting with any other (medical) equipment already linked to the
power supply.
• This bed must be used only by adequately trained people.
• This bed is designed for repeated re-use. Please follow the instructions listed below:
Cleaning and disinfecting (see p. 21)
Maintenance & inspection (see p. 22)
3.2 Materials used
The bed is mostly made up by steel tubing profiles, covered by a polyester powder coating or by a
metallic zinc or chrome coating. The head/foot panels are made of wood or similar material, whose
surface is waterproof. The bed rails are made of aluminium, coated to mimic the appearance of wood.
The surfaces are not harmful in contact with the skin.
Frame
The bed is supplied disassembled to be transported into the house. It is made up of two wooden panels
(head panel and foot panel), a mattress base with a motor, with an electric actuator, six bed rail bars and
lifting pole (accessory not included with the bed). The bed has four swivel wheels, all with a parking
brake.
Mattress base
The mattress base is divided into a backrest with auto-regression, a fixed central element, a leg support
and a knee raiser with ratchet. These elements are adjustable. The foot or head parts of the mattress
base can be adjusted in height horizontally or obliquely compared to the floor. All the adjustments are
performed by electric motors by using a hand control. The mattress base can be extended by 15cm
simply by moving the foot panel outwards and the integral mattress support.
Bed Rails
To protect patients from possible accidental falls from the bed, the bed is equipped with rails (meet
clause 201.9.8.3.3.3 of IEC 60601-2-52) on both sides, which can act as a barrier or be lowered when
not in use. The blocking mechanism is locked and it can be released only by pressing the button on the
side.
Electric system
The electric operating system of this bed is safe and easy to use. It consists of:
• Electronic controller. A minimum protection voltage of 24 volts is produced which is not dangerous for
the patient and the user. The electric motors and the hand control are connected to the central controller
with connectors, which work with a minimum protection voltage of 24 volts.
• Separate electric motors for the back and the leg supports.
• Two electric motors to adjust the height of the mattress base (one in each bed end).
• A hand control unit with fixed hook.

4. Symbols and Statements
This User Manual contains the following symbols which are used to show you specific risks
when dealing with the product or information on how to simplify handling.
Caution: This symbol indicates the need for the user to consult the instructions for use for
important cautionary information such as warnings and precautions that cannot, for a
variety of reasons, be presented on the medical device itself.
Symbols used in this manual and on the Soprano Bariatric bed:
B symbol, indicates this product is according to degree of protection against electric
shock for type B equipment.
Caution, read the instructions before use.
IP24
Protection type
Disposal of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): This product should be
handed over to an applicable collection point for the recycling of electrical and
electronic equipment.
CE certification in accordance with 93/42/EEC.
Protection class II (Protective insulation).
Note: Maximum continuous operation of the actuator motors is 2 minutes at maximum load; it must
then be followed by a period of rest for 18 minutes, before being activated again.

5. Safe Use Guidelines
The bed is fitted with a locking handset; which is achieved via a locking fob; individual functions may
be locked out.
Caution: When using any equipment that extends under the bed ensure there is no
risk of entrapment, pinching of cables or risk of damage to motors or actuators
when the bed is moved to its lowest settings.
Caution: Although this bed has been designed to be used with the common types
of portable hoists care should be exercised when using this bed with all portable
hoists. The user must ensure that sufficient clearance is afforded to all hoist legs,
masts and booms and that cables of the bed and hoist are not trapped, snagged,
kinked or pinched when operating the bed or the hoist.
5.1 Safety information –nursing personnel, care givers and users
Caution: Risk of Accidents!
Do not use electrical medical appliances on patients in these beds involving
intravascular or intra-cardiac connection.
Do not use the bed in the vicinity of strong electromagnetic fields.
Always plug the bed mains plug into a separate wall socket. Do not use a multi-plug adaptor.
Route the mains cable to the wall socket in such a way that there is no mechanical
tension, and the mains cable cannot be pinched, kinked or run over.
When routing cables from other equipment within the bed, precautions should be
taken to avoid squeezing those parts of the bed.
Please observe the respective equipment operating and assembly instructions with
regard to any additional safety risks that may arise when using the bed in conjunction
with other equipment. If you have any questions, please contact Ultimate Healthcare
(see details on the back cover).
Warning: Danger to life and risk of injury due to trapping/pinching!
When carrying out adjustments, watch the occupant in the bed and the bed’s
surroundings.
Ensure that underweight/very thin patients cannot slip down between the mattress
and side rails.
Ensure that the side rails are properly locked in place.
When lowering the bed, make sure that there are no obstructions under the bed; pay
particular attention to the feet of the person operating the bed and those of any other
person in attendance.

Warning: Possible danger to life due to alteration of the patient’s position
Always lock (disable) all handset adjustment functions which could cause danger to
the patient’s health if adjusted (consult doctor).
Always take account of the patient’s condition when locking (disabling) the
adjustment options.
Warning: Accident hazard due to falling out of the bed!
The bed should always be left in its lowest position when the patient is unsupervised the bed
can be adjusted to a suitable height for the patient to get in or out of the bed in order to
reduce the risk of injury due to falls.
Caution: Risk of short circuit and fire
Before moving the bed, disconnect the mains plug and secure the mains cable from being
run over.
Do not use the bed in surroundings in which flammable gases or vapors (e.g. from
anaesthetics) may be present.
Caution: Danger due to actuator motor overheating!
Before adjusting the bed height, ensure that nothing is blocking the full adjustment
movement.
Avoid operating the actuator motors continuously for more than two minutes.
Maximum continuous operation of the actuator motors is 2 minutes; the minimum pause
after 2 minutes operation is 18 minutes.
Never use more than two actuator motors simultaneously.
Ensure there is nothing preventing the actuator from working correctly, a mattress
incorrectly secured to the bed frame can prevent the backrest or knee break from
functioning correctly and causing damage to the patient or the Bed.
5.2 Safety information –bed assembly
Warning: Risk of Injury due to incorrect assembly!
Ensure that all bed components are correctly assembled.
Check that all adjustment options are in perfect working order after assembly,

Caution: Risk of Accidents!
Only perform assembly work using suitable tools.
Only perform the work described if you are familiar with handling the required tools.
5.3 Safety information –maintenance and inspection
Only allow maintenance and inspection work to be carried out by or under the supervision and
guidance of trained expert personnel who, on the basis of their specialist training, knowledge and
experience - in addition to knowledge of all the relevant regulations - are capable of evaluating the
condition of the bed and of recognising any possible effects and hazards.
Always read the relevant chapters of this User Manual thoroughly before carrying out maintenance
and inspection work.
Any damage resulting from non-observance of this User Manual is excluded from any liability of
the manufacturer.
Caution
Always carry out a function test following maintenance work and inspections.
When operating the actuator motors, ensure that the bed cabling cannot be pinched,
overstretched or kinked.
Caution: Hazards due to electrical and mechanical faults!
Immediately remove faulty/defective beds from operationand secure them against
unauthorised use. Disconnect the mains plug from the wall socket.
Only use original spare parts from Ultimate Healthcare.
Always carry out the prescribed maintenance and inspection work at the specified
intervals, see Section 16 Maintenance and Inspection.
Do not carry out any alterations to the electrical or mechanical fittings supplied with the
bed unless authorised to do so by the manufacturer. Unauthorised alterations lead to any
liability of the manufacturer becoming null and void.
Only perform maintenance and inspection work using suitable tools.
Do not open electrical components.

The IP (liquid and dust ingress) rating for the control module on the Cura II and Cura II Supreme
medical beds is IPX4. The Cura II and Cura II Supreme beds are designed for medical purposes only.
Electrical installations must comply with your local electrical installation requirements.
7. Installation and Set-Up
Remove packaging; all cardboard is recyclable; carefully dispose of all plastic packaging to avoid risk
of suffocation; recycle plastics where facilities exist.
Caution: Read these instructions carefully before attempting to assemble the bed.
• The bed is supplied disassembled.
• The installation must be carried out by a minimum of two persons.
Packaging units:
Box 1: Back rest section of mattress platform complete with actuator, side rail end caps, mattress
retainers and mattress platform connecting bars.
Box 2: Leg rest section of mattress platform complete with actuator, main electrical control unit and
hand control unit.
Box 3: Headboard Bed end (shorter connecting bars) with a Hi-Lo actuator.
Box 4: Footboard Bed end (longer connecting bars for extending purposes) with a Hi-Lo actuator.
Box 5: Six wood effect aluminum bars to form the bed side rails.

7.1 Assembling the bed
Mounting instructions:
• The assembly of the bed must be carried out by a minimum of two persons;

1. Use the bars provided to connect the mattress platforms together (figure 1) ensuring the end
of each bar with the blue dot is inserted first into the fame with the matching blue dots. Also
note the location holes for the hand screws need to be on the bottom of the connector bars
(figure 2) as shown in the photo above right
2. Once the two halves of the frame are fully pushed together, hand tighten all the hand screws.

3. Unscrew the 4 hand screws on both ends of the frame.
4. Swing the connecting bars outward to 90 degrees (figure 3).
5. Align the footboard which has the longer connector bars with the footend of the mattress
platform and push the two parts together (figure 4)
6. Tighten all the turn hand screws
7. Repeat actions 3 to 5 on the opposite side

7.2 Setting up actuators
All actuators on the bed are colour coded.
1. The back rest actuator has red stickers that should be matched up with the corresponding
red stickers on the mounting points on the underside of the bed frame. (figure 5)
2. Equally, the green stickers on the foot rest actuator should be matched up with the green
stickers on the mounting points (figure 6)
3. The main control box comes already attached to the back rest actuator with all the cables
colour coded. Ensure the correct connector is attached to the matching actuator.
4. The hi-lo actuators on the head and foot boards should be connected using the yellow
stickered connectors (figure 7)
5. Plug the mains plug into the wall socket and make sure all of the cables are secured.
6. Test the actuators by pressing each button on the handset control.

Caution: Always make sure that the electric plugs are then properly inserted into the controller
for the bed to function correctly.
Caution: Pay attention to position the back and foot rest actuators correctly! They should never
be inverted.
Caution: If when operating the handset the functions operate incorrectly it may be that the cables
are located in the wrong actuators. In this case the cables will have to be inserted into the correct
actuator points and tested again to make sure the handset operates the correct parts of the
bedframe.

8. Operations
8.1 Before using the bed
• The wheels of the bed are locked:
How to lock the brake: Press the lower lever down with your foot until the upper lever snaps up.
How to unlock the brake: Press the upper lever with your foot until the lower lever clicks.
• The power supply is compatible with the bed (230 Volt, 50 Hertz).
• The power cable is plugged in and placed in such a way that it cannot be damaged.
• The power cable, the motor cables and the hand control cable are not damaged by any moving parts
of the nursing bed.
• There are no obstacles in the way such as bedsides or chairs.
• All control functions have been accurately inspected and are working properly.
• Only after having carried out the above operations it will be possible to start using the bed.
8.2 Requirements of onsite installation
• Make sure there is enough space to allow the whole range of adjustments of the bed. There should
not be any furniture or other objects close to the bed such as window sills.
• If the bed is to be used on parquet floor, make sure that the use of wheels will not cause any
discolouring due to the parquet waterproof treatment. It is possible to use the bed on tiles, carpets,
laminated floors and linoleum.
• A 230 volt power outlet, correctly installed, must be located as near as possible to the bed.
• If there is the need to use other accessories (such as compressor systems etc…), make sure they
are correctly fixed and that they work properly. In particular, make sure all different cables are safely
connected. In case of questions or doubts please contact the manufacturer of such accessories.
• If possible, use only non-flammable mattresses and linens.
• Don’t smoke while in bed as there is no guarantee against risks caused by smoking tools (such as
lighters, matches) depending on the mattresses and linens used.
• Do not use any electric accessories (electric blanket) and appliances (lights, radios) only if they are
in a good condition.

• Make sure these appliances are used only for their intended purpose and that they cannot
accidentally end up on and under the sheets (risk of overheating).
• Avoid using extension cables or connections to multiple sockets under the bed (fire hazard due to
the penetration of liquids).
• Extension cables and/or power multiple sockets should never be used at all.
During the installation of the bed you must take the following issues into serious
consideration to minimize potential fire hazards due to external influences. Inform the user
and the personnel about these issues!
8.3 Moving the bed
Before moving the bed, ensure that a risk assessment is completed. Please refer to ‘Example of risk
assessment in section 22’ of this manual.
To move the bed:
Disconnect from the mains supply.
Release all 4 castor brakes, these are foot only operated.
Move the bed to the desired location.
Taking care not to run any cables over.
Re-apply the castor brakes.
Check there are no obstructions near the bed.
Check the cabling is not pinched or kinked anywhere.
Re-connect the bed to the mains supply.
Caution: The bed is only to be moved within the patient room for cleaning or patient
access.
Caution: The patient must not be in situ on the bed whilst it is being moved.
Caution: Ensure there is no risk of injury to any person involved in moving the bed and
ensure there is no risk of damage to the bed.

9. Extending the bed
9.1 To extend the bed frame
The bed can be extended by 150mm. Adjustment is made at the foot end of the bed.
1. Apply brakes to head end castors
2. Loosen the 2 turn hand screws at the foot end of
the bed.
3. Unlock the foot end castors
4. Pull the bed end out until it reaches the end, clicks
and stops.
5. Retighten all the turn hand screws.
9.2 To extend the bed platform
1. Pull the ‘twist and pull locking pins’ out on the platform section.
2. Slide the platform extension out until the ‘twist and pull locking pins’ click
3. Reapply brakes.
10. Handset Control
Handset Controls are supplied with 10 buttons.
Caution: Ensure that no person, limbs or objects in any way interfere with the
desired movement of the bed.
The electric functions of the bed are activated by the patient and by the user with a hand control.
• The electric motors work if the corresponding buttons are pressed.
• It is possible to adjust different sections in both directions.
• The hand control can be attached to the bed where needed with a hook.
• The spiral cable allows freedom of movement.

10.1 Hand control use
Backrest adjustment
Press this button to change the angle of the backrest.
Height adjustment of the mattress base
Press this button to change the height of the mattress base. When the
height is adjusted there is an automatic horizontal positioning of the
mattress base in the highest and/or lower position.
Leg support adjustment
Press this button to change the angle of the leg support.
Backrest and leg support combined adjustment (Auto-Contour)
Press this button to change the angle of the backrest and the angle of
the leg support simultaneously.
Angle adjustment of feet –head section (Trendelenburg Tilt)
Press this button to lower the foot or head section independently. When
the height is adjusted there is an automatic horizontal adjustment of the
mattress base if lowered at the feet in the highest position and/or in the
lowest one.
Before lowering the section you need to release the brake of the two wheels on the head or foot panel
side, to avoid possible damages to the floor.

11. Accessories
11.1 Lifting poles
In both corners of the mattress base, towards the head panel, there is a round insert with a cavity into
which the lifting pole must be placed. The lifting pole must be inserted in the side from where the
patient gets in or out of the bed to help him/her out. Only use the manufacturers lifting pole design for
this bed and for specific Bariatric use.
Assembly
• Place the lifting pole into its housing. The metal pin must be placed into the cavity. Make sure to
double check the oscillation field of the lifting pole which must be limited.
Disassembly
• Remove the lifting pole from its housing by pulling it upwards.
Height adjustment of the handle
The height of the lifting pole handle can be adjusted with the strap supplied.
11.2 Attaching Full Length Side Rails to the bed
Fitting
• The easiest way is to raise the bed to its highest position.
• Insert each bed rail into the end caps provided and insert the end cap guides into the runners on the
head and foot board.
• Make sure to lift one rail at a time ensuring both ends are level before moving on to the next rail.
• You may have to press in the bottom button in order to fit the bottom bed rail.
• Once all rails have been fitted and are above the bottom button lift up the top bed rail until it
automatically fits into the highest position on both ends above the top button. You should not be able
to move the top rail upwards or downwards.
• Check that the other bed rails are properly inserted by pressing from the top of each bed rail. You
should not be able to move them downwards.
Lowering
• Lift the top bed rail slightly.
• Press the upper button and lower bed rail slowly to its lower position.
12. Selecting a Mattress
Ensure the selection of an appropriate mattress depending on whether the bed is set to standard or
extended mode. Having placed the mattress on the bed a risk assessment should be performed to
identify potential entrapment risks for the user. Please refer to ‘Example of risk assessment in section
22’ of this manual.

Warning: if using side rails, the distance from the top of the uncompressed mattress to the
top of the side rail should be more than 220mm.
13.Transport and Storage
13.1 Disconnecting the controller
1. Ensure castor brakes are engaged –these are foot operated only.
2. Ensure the mains lead is disconnected before starting to dismantle the bed for transport or
storage.
3. Remove the mattress.
4. Remove the connectors from the controller.
13.2 Dismantling the bed
1. Remove any accessories attached to the bed.
2. If the bed has been extended; return it to the standard length.
3. Apply the castor brakes; this is a foot only operation.
4. Remove the mattress retaining clips.
5. Release the hand screws; if removed store carefully for re-use.
6. Release the castor brakes on one end of the bed only.
7. Carefully slide the two halves of the bed apart and rest them on the floor.
8. Apply the castor brakes; these are foot only operated brakes.
9. Release the hand screws that secures the mattress platform to the head and foot board ; if
removed store carefully for re-use.
10. Carefully slide the mattress platform off of the connector; taking care not to allow the head
and footboard to fall to the floor.
11. Place all parts into the cardboard packaging if retained.
13.3Storing the bed
When not in use this bed must be stored in a dry, clean environment. We recommend that storage
temperatures are between -50C ~ 400C and that % Relative Humidity (RH) is between 10~60%.
