User Manual
Introduction
Thank you for purchasing an Ultrahaptics STRATOS
Inspire (USI). This manual provides an introduction to the
evaluation kit, including set-up and how to access support
from Ultrahaptics. The manual also includes Compliance,
Health & Safety guidance and Warranty information. A
separate Installation Template provides instructions for
installing or mounting the STRATOS Inspire.
Please read and understand this documentation in full
before installing or using the STRATOS Inspire.
Intended use
The STRATOS Inspire has been designed to project haptic
sensations onto hands or fingertips using its array of
ultrasound transducers. It is intended to be used in a static
desktop mount or fixed installation.

The STRATOS Inspire is certified compliant to
IEC 62368-1:2014.
The STRATOS Inspire has been assessed by Ultrahaptics
to be compliant with environmental regulations including
RoHS and REACH directives. All components used in the
STRATOS Inspire have been confirmed as compliant with
the relevant standard by their manufacturers. For more

WARNING: These warnings must always
be followed to avoid risk of serious injury or
damage.
Caution: Indicates precautions that must be
followed to avoid discomfort for users, service
interruption or device damage.
Electrical hazard: Indicates a potential hazard
which may result in electric shock.
High sound pressure: Indicates a situation
which may increase the risk of hearing
damage.
Indicates information to assist in correct or
optimal operation of the STRATOS Inspire.
Precautions
We want you to enjoy using the STRATOS Inspire (USI)
safely. Please read and understand the information below
carefully to reduce the risk of electric shock, injury or
damage to the evaluation kit or other property.
We recommend that you carry out a risk assessment
incorporating these precautions, local requirements and
environmental factors before operating the STRATOS
Inspire.
WARNING: If you have a pacemaker,
implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
or other medical device installed or if you
are pregnant, elderly or suer from a heart
condition, hearing problems or other serious
medical condition which could be aected by
ultrasound or electromagnetic interference,
consult a doctor before using the STRATOS
Inspire.
WARNING: Always ensure that the STRATOS
Inspire is securely and stably mounted before
use. Always use the mounting points or
desktop stand provided.
WARNING: Users must stop using the
STRATOS Inspire immediately if they

experience any of the following symptoms:
dizziness; disorientation; impaired balance;
nausea; light-headedness; headaches;
involuntary muscle twitches; discomfort or
pain in the hand, arm or head; drowsiness;
fatigue or any symptoms similar to motion
sickness. If symptons persist, they must:
• Not drive, operate machinery or engage
in other demanding activities that have
potentially serious consequences
• Not use the STRATOS Inspire until all
symptoms have completely subsided for
several hours.
• See a doctor if they experience serious
and/or persistent symptoms, or have
any concerns.
Caution: High sound pressure. Haptic
sensations are created by a region (‘Focal
point’) of high-intensity ultrasound. Do not
target sensations directly onto ears or eyes.
Do not place the head directly in front of the
STRATOS Inspire’s transducer array.
When designing installations and/or sensations
for the STRATOS Inspire, allow a minimum
distance of 30 cm / 12” between the haptic
focal point and the head.
WARNING: Power-down and isolate the
power source to the STRATOS Inspire and
associated equipment before beginning
installation or before making changes to
wiring.
Caution: The STRATOS Inspire is rated IP4X
for Ingress protection. Do not submerge the
STRATOS Inspire, the casing is splashproofed
- clean o liquid spills on the casing as they
occur.
Caution: Keep the STRATOS Inspire and power
adapter away from sources of heat and fire.
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Do not
modify or disassemble any of the components
provided. Do not use the STRATOS Inspire
if any cable is damaged or any wires are
exposed.
Caution: Ultrahaptics technology is designed
for short bursts of feedback. Continuous
feedback from the Ultrahaptics system, or any
other vibratory feedback system, can lead to a
temporary loss of sensitivity in the frequency
range of the feedback. If this happens, users
should take a 10 to 15 minute break. Each
person is dierent, so take longer breaks as
required.
Caution: Don’t obstruct the fan covers at the
sides of the STRATOS Inspire when installing,
as this may cause the unit to power-down to
avoid damage from overheating.
Disposal
The symbol on the device or its packaging
indicates that this device must not be disposed
of with your other household waste.
Instead, it is your responsibility to dispose of your waste
equipment by handing it over to a designated collection
point for the recycling of waste electrical and electronic
equipment. The separate collection and recycling of your
waste equipment at the time of disposal will help conserve
natural resources and ensure that it is recycled in a manner
that protects human health and the environment. For more
information about where you can drop o your waste for
recycling, please contact your Local Authority, or where
you purchased your evaluation kit.

System requirements
Compatible operating systems:
Microsoft®Windows®(7, 8, 8.1 and 10), Apple®MacOS®
(10.10 onwards), Ubuntu®Linux®16.04 LTS or later.
Most Ultrahaptics demos support only
Microsoft Windows. Check with Ultrahaptics if
unsure.
Minimum system requirements:
Intel Core i3®; AMD Phenom II®with 2GB RAM and USB 2.0
port.
Recommended system requirements:
Intel Core i5/i7®or AMD Ryzen®with 4GB RAM, USB 2.0
and dedicated graphics processor.

Caution: Use only the power supply included
or a suitably rated Limited Power Source in
accordance with IEC 62368-1:2014.
Electrical hazard: Use of non-Limited Power
Sources, or of power supplies that produce
voltages outside the stated specification may
result in permanent damage to the device,
and could lead to electrical hazards including
shocks.
Download and install software
5. Install SDK from www.leapmotion.com.
Leap Motion Orion SDK supports only
Microsoft Windows. To use other operating
systems with the Ultrahaptics SDK, install Leap
Motion Desktop SDK V2.
6. Download and install the Ultrahaptics SDK from
developer.ultrahaptics.com. Guidance and design
notes can be found within the SDK documentation. APIs
including C and C# are available for development
7. Other development tools and demos may be available to
you, including:
• Demo Suite can be downloaded from the
Ultrahaptics developer site to experience mid-air
haptic sensations
• Sensation Editor™can be downloaded from the
Ultrahaptics developer site to run and customise
mid-air haptic sensations
• Ultrahaptics Core Asset for Unity allows mid-air
haptics to be easily integrated into Unity projects
for deeper, more immersive interactive experiences.

Registering your STRATOS Inspire
1. Go to the Ultrahaptics Developer Site https://developer.ultrahaptics.com
2. Register your STRATOS Inspire using the serial number on the rating
plate (6) and create an account.

3. Connect the USB Type-C cable to the port (8) on the rear of the STRATOS Inspire
4. Connect 24V DC Power to the power port (7).

Installation and mounting
WARNING: Always ensure that the STRATOS
Inspire is securely mounted before use. Use
the mounting points or desktop stand provided
as appropriate. Refer to the Installation
Template for more information.
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Electrical
installations must only be carried out by a
qualified person. If in doubt contact your local
Health and Safety representative / authority.

Caution: Don’t obstruct the fan inlets and
outlets at the sides of the STRATOS Inspire
when installing, as this may cause the unit
to power-down to avoid damage from
overheating.
The STRATOS Inspire is designed to be used in a static
desktop mount or installation. Four usage methods are
supported:
• Desktop stand mount: Using the included desktop
stand with two mounting bolts, or a VESA 100×100
compatible monitor stand
• Horizontal mount: Resting on the feet at the rear of
the unit
• Wall mount: Using a VESA 100×100 compatible wall
mount
• Part-recessed: Within a cut-out on a vertical surface,
sealing against the casing seal (4). An M4 security
bolting point (9) is provided at the rear of the unit.

details.
System updates
Ultrahaptics periodically release software and firmware
updates designed to introduce new features, functionality
and provide bug fixes. We recommend that you regularly
check the Developer Site at developer.ultrahaptics.com
for updates, and install them once they are released.

12 month conditional warranty
The STRATOS Inspire (USI) has a 12-month warranty period beginning
from the date of purchase from Ultrahaptics or an Ultrahaptics approved
distributor.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, Ultrahaptics shall not be liable for any
defects that are caused by neglect, misuse or mistreatment by an entity
other than Ultrahaptics, including violation of the following precautionary
measures:
• Do not attempt to dismantle or service the STRATOS Inspire.
• Do not exceed the stated ambient operating temperature range.
• It is not advisable to expose the STRATOS Inspire to direct sunlight
• Damage or defects caused by
• Use, operation or treatment of the evaluation kit inconsistent
with its intended use or specification
• Inappropriate handling
• Installation or use of the evaluation kit in a manner
inconsistent with the technical or safety laws or standards in
the country where it is installed or used
• Adjustments or modifications without Ultrahaptics' prior
written consent, are not covered by the warranty.
If you experience a problem with your STRATOS Inspire, please contact
and serial number in the title. If, after you have contacted Ultrahaptics
support, anything need to be serviced or replaced under warranty,
return instructions will be provided along with a return merchandise
authorization number (RMA). Proof of purchase will be required to process
a warranty claim.
Valid warranty returns including both Product and outbound shipping are
processed at no additional charge to the customer.
