UML Pro-Sensor Installation and operation manual

1
Ensure all crewmembers are fully aware how the Lifejacket operates and also how to
manually activate the Lifejacket.
Check the single indicator status is fully green.
Check the correct CO2 Cylinder type and size is fitted.
Check the CO2 Cylinder is secured handtight.
Check the manual firing pull tab is accessible.
Check the lever is retained in place.
Check the automatic firing cartridge is within the expiry date printed on it.
Ensure the jacket fits correctly and is suitable for the conditions and individual wearing it.
Safety Information
The UML Pro-Sensor Automatic and Manual Lifejacket Inflators
UML RECOMMENDS THAT LIFEJACKETS ARE
WORN BY ALL CREW MEMBERS AT ALL TIMES
ABOARD THE VESSEL
BEFORE EACH USE:
When wearing inherently buoyant or foul weather clothing
the automatic firing cartridge may not activate as the unit
may not get wet.
IN SUCH CASES, MANUAL INFLATION WILL BE
ACHIEVED BY PULLING FIRMLY
ON THE PULL TAB.

• Affords the user a 'clearly visible' point of status
indication, to confirm that the unit has been
automatically or manually activated.
• The unit also provides the added benefit of
detecting if the CO cylinder has been pierced,
eradicating the possibility of accidentally
fitting a pierced gas cylinder.
• Simple re-charging procedure.
• The Automatic Pro-Sensor is fitted with the latest 'all weather'
Cartridge with the added benefit of inhibiting the accidental ingress of
moisture and water spray, during hot humid or heavy stormy weather.
• No service requirements for 3 years on the inflators.
There are two models of the Pro-Sensor Lifejacket Inflators.
A Manual version and an Automatic version which incorporates a manual activation.

COMPRESSED SPRING

MANUAL FIRING PULL TAB
CUTTER
CO2 CYLINDER
The UML Automatic system activates when the Cartridge Mechanism comes into contact with water.
• The cartridge mechanism is a compressed high powered spring which is held by a
paper element.
• When the paper element comes into contact with water it releases the spring which
pushes a plunger forward
• The plunger forces the cutter into the CO cylinder. Allowing the CO to travel through
the CO gas hole in the inflator head and inflate the lifejacket.
• Total buoyancy is normally reached in 4-5 seconds.

The UML Pro-Sensor Automatic and Manual Lifejacket Inflators 3

When wearing inherently buoyant or foul weather clothing the
automatic cartridge may not be automatically activated as the
unit may not get wet.
• In such cases the manual back-up (pull tab) should be used
to inflate the jacket.
• All crewmembers should wear a lifejacket. Ensure the lifejacket
fits correctly and is suitable for the person wearing it.
• The Automatic system is backed up by a manual override, which
allows the user to pull the tab and inflate the lifejacket.
How the Automatic version works cont.
• When the system has fired automatically the
indicator system turns to red, sensing the
cartridge has activated and the CO cylinder
has been pierced.
The indication system will only show green when the product is correctly charged.

MANUAL FIRING PULL TAB
The UML Manual system activates when the pull tab is pulled.
• The pull tab is connected to a lever which pushes a plunger forward, in
turn forcing a cutter into the CO cylinder.
• The cutter allows the CO to travel through the CO gas hole in the inflator
head and inflate the lifejacket.
• When the system has fired the indication system
turns to red, sensing the CO cylinder has been
pierced.
• The indication system will only show green when
the product is correctly charged.
• Total buoyancy is normally reached in 4-5 seconds.

Testing Your Lifejacket with the UML Pro-Sensor Automatic Inflator.
• If you want to test your life jacket in the water. Open the lifejacket
following the manufacturers instructions
• Remove the automatic cartridge and CO cylinder from the Inflator.
• Inflate the jacket through the oral inflation tube
• Don the lifejacket, following the manufacturers instructions
• Go swimming. (Warning: If you are not a competent swimmer ensure the
test is performed in safe shallow water, with help at hand).
• Familiarise yourself with the way the you float when wearing the lifejacket
• After you swim let the jacket dry off completely, then deflate it.
(Instructions for this procedure will be in the lifejacket owners manual).
• Replace the automatic cartridge and CO cylinder ensuring the indication
returns to green (See rearming your Pro-Sensor Automatic Inflator).

Rearming your UML Pro-Sensor Automatic Inflator
• Take the new automatic cartridge and screw onto
the inflator head in a clockwise direction. Screw right up
ensuring there is no gap between the cartridge and
inflator head and then do up hand tight.

• Ensure once the operating head is rearmed that the
indication system is showing completely green in the
indication window.
• If fired manually replace the firing arm into the unit.
The arm will click into place, thereby preventing the arm
from moving.
• Check that the cylinder sealing gasket in the end of
the operating head has been correctly fitted, or replaced
if necessary. Check the new CO Cylinder has not been
used and screw into the inflator body in a clockwise
direction. Ensure the cylinder is screwed right down and
do up hand tight.

UML Automatic Pro-Sensor Inflator
• The UML Automatic cartridge and CO cylinder need replacing after use.
• The cartridge must be replaced after 3 years, the expiry date is indicated
on the cartridge.
UML Manual Pro-Sensor Inflator
• Replace the CO cylinder on the Manual inflator after use. No expiry date.
Periodical Checking for both Inflators
• Check that the indicators are all green.
• Check that the expiry date is within limit.
• Check that the pull tab is accessible.
See also instructions and guidance from the lifejacket manufacturer.
If your lifejacket(PFD) has been used
• Ensure the jacket is completely dry before packing.
• Refer to manufacturers instructions for drying.
• It is advised that the lifejacket is inflated to ensure the chamber maintains
air holding at least overnight.
• Deflate the lifejacket (PFD) by reversing the dust cap and placing in the
non-return valve in the top of the oral tube
• Squeeze out ALL RESIDUAL AIR from the bladder, so that the jacket may be
folded properly. (See also instructions from the lifejacket manufacturer).

• Contact your local dealer to obtain the correct replacement kit
The re-charge kit will contain:
• The correct CO Cylinder type and size.
• An Automatic Cartridge
• Ensure you have the correct re-charge kit for the model of lifejacket as lifejackets
require different CO Cylinders and automatic inflation mechanisms.
• Ensure the lifejacket (PFD = Personal Floatation Device) has been deflated and
all the residual air has been pressed out by pushing in the non-return valve in the
top of the oral tube with the reverse side of the cap which is attached to the tube.
• Ensure the lifejacket is completely dry and place on a smooth flat surface or in
an emergency wipe off any excess water
Refer to manufacturers instructions to repack the lifejacket correctly.
• Always refer to the lifejacket instruction manual in conjunction with these
instructions and keep to service intervals.
• Lifejackets should be regularly serviced by an authorised service agent.
• Re-charge kits should be kept on board for use after an emergency.
