NOTE: This radio has bee desig ed for operatio i the 11 meter Citize s Ba d
Radio Service. It uses a freque cy sy thesizi g circuit with Phase Locked
Loop(PLL) tech iques to provide crystal co trolled tra smit a d receive
operatio o all 40 Cha els. The PLL circuitry assures ultraprecise
freque cy co trol. It is desig ed to meet the Departme t of Commu
icatio requireme ts applicable to equipme t operati g i the Citize s
Ba d Radio Service, a d is ot to be used for a y other purpose. MS 312 of
the D.O.C. régulatio s defi es operatio i this service, a d you are required
to read a d u dersta d these régulatio s prior to operati g this equipme t.

INSTALLATION
Locatio
Pla the locatio of the tra sceiver a d micropho e bracket betöre starti g the
i stallatio . Select a locatio that is co ve ie t for operatio a d does ot i terfère
with the driver or passe ger i the vehicle. I automobiles, the tra sceiver is usually
mou ted to the dash pa el with the micropho e bracket beside it.
Mou ti g a d Co ectio
This radio is supplied with a u iversal mou ti g bracket. The tra sceiver is held i
the bracket by the two thumb screws supplied. permitti g adjustme t to the most
co ve ie t a gle. The bracket must be mou ted with the machi e screws supplied.
The mou ti g surface must be mecha ically stro g. Proceed as follows to mou t the
tra sceiver:
1. After you hâve determi ed the most co ve ie t locatio i your vehicle, hold the
radio with mou ti g bracket i the exact locatio desired. If othi g i terfères
with mou ti g it i the desired positio , remove the mou ti g bracket bolts.
Before drilli g the holes, make sure othi g will i terfère with the i stallatio of
the mou ti g bolts.
2. Co ect the a te a cable plug to the sta dard réceptacle o the rear pa el. Most
CB a te as are termi ated with a type PL-259 plug which mates with the
réceptacle o the rear pa el.
3. Co ect the DC power i put wire with the fuse (red) to +12V DC. This wire
exte ds from a plug which co ects to the rear pa el. I automobile i stallatio s,
+ 12V DC is usually obtai ed from the accessory co tact o the ig itio switch.

also permits operati g the radio without the e gi e ru i g. You ca locate the
accessory co tact o most ig itio switches by traci g the power wire from the
AM broadcast receiver i the car.

4. Co ect the black wire to grou d. This is usually the chassis of the car. A y co -
ve ie t locatio with good electrical co tact may be used. (remove pai t).
5. Mou t the micropho e ha ger o the side of the u it or ear the u it, usi g two
screws supplied. Whe mou ti g i ап automobile, place the ha ger o the dash
so the micropho e is easily accessible.
GENERAL INFORMATION
GROUND CONNECTION
This radio may be i stalled a d used i a y 12V DC egative or positive grou d
system vehicle. Most ew U.S. a d foreig madę cars or smali trucks use a egative
grou d system while some older cars a d some ewer large trucks may use a positive
grou d system.
1. Negative grou d system: Co ect the Red power lead from the radio to the
positive or (+) battery termi al or other co ve ie t poi t, a d co ect the Black
power lead to the chassis or vehicle frame or (-) battery termi al.
2. Positive grou d system: I the case of positive grou d system, co ect the Black
power lead from the radio to the egative or (-) battery termi al or other
co ve ie t poi t, a d co ect the Red power lead to the chassis or vehicle frame
or (+) battery termi al.
ANTENNA
This radio is desig ed to operate i to a 52 ohm CITIZENS RADIO a te a. Best
results will be obtai ed from your tra sceiver if you use a good a te a, properly
i stalled. (Refer to the a te a i stallatio i structio s i cluded with your a te a.)
A vertically polarized quarter-wavele gth whip a te a provides the most reliable
operatio a d greater ra ge. The shorter loaded-type whip a te as are more at
tractive, compact a d adéquate for applicatio s where the maximum possible dis
ta ce is ot required. Also, the loaded whip a te as do ot prese t the Problems of
height imposed by the full quarter-wavele gth whip.

Mobile whip a te as utilize the metal body of the vehicle as a grou d pla e. Whe
mou ted o a cor er of the vehicle, they are slightly directio al, i the directio of
the body of the vehicle. For all practical purposes, however, the radiatio patter is
o -directio al. A slight directio al characteristic will be observed o ly at extreme
dista ces. A sta dard a te a co ector (Type SO 239) is provided o the
tra sceiver for easy co ectio to a sta dard PL-259 cable termi atio .
Whe i stalled i a boat, the tra sceiver will perform most efficie tly whe
a te a used has bee specifically desig ed for mari e applicatio s.
Before i stalli g the tra sceiver i a boat, co sult your dealer for i formatio
regardi g a adéquate grou di g system a d préve tio of electrolysis betwee fitt
i gs i the hüll a d water.
BASE STATION OPERATION
То operate the tra sceiver from your home or office, usi g regulär house curre t as
the power source, you will require a separate power supply capable of supplyi g 2.5
amps at a 13.8V DC output with a omi al i put voltage of 120 volts AC, 50/60Hz.
Simply co ect the red (+) a d black (-) leads of the tra sceiver to the correspo d-
i g DC termi ais of the power supply.
NOTE: Do ot attempt to operate this tra sceiver by co ecti g directly to 117V
AC. Whe AC power supply is used with the tra sceiver for base statio
operatio a y Citize s Ba d beam, dipole, grou d pla e or vertical a te a
may be used. A grou d pla e vertical a te a will provide the most u iform
horizo tal coverage.
REMOTE SPEAKER
The exter al speaker jack (EXT. SPKR) o the rear pa el is used for remote receiver
mo itori g. The exter al speaker should hâve 8 ohms impéda ce. Whe the exter al
speaker is plugged i , the i ter ai speaker is disco ected.
PUBLIC ADDRESS
A exter al 8 ohm 4-watt speaker must be co ected to the (PA SPKR) jack located
o the rear pa el whe the tra sceiver is used as a public address system. The speaker
should be directed away from the micropho e to preve t acoustic feedback. Physical
séparatio or isolatio of the micropho e a d speaker is importa t whe operati g
the PA at high output levels.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The АХ 144 opérâtes o 40 AM cha els, 40 Upper Side Ba d cha els a d 40
Lower Side Ba d cha els.
Whe you receive the SSB sig al i the proper mode, audio Sou d may be either
too high pitched or low pitched, i dicati g that your receiver may ot be tu ed to
the exact same freque cy as the tra smitter to which it is liste i g. The AX 144 is
equipped with a Clarifier. By tu i g the Clarifier, you ca slightly cha ge the
freque cy of the receiver, so you get a ormal to e.

MODE SELECTOR
OPERATING CONTROLS
Your AX 144 , designed for ease of operation, is provided with the following
operating Controls:
1. OFF/ON VOLUME: To tur the tra sceiver o , rotate the co trol clockwise
past cl ick. То tur the tra sceiver off, rotate the co trol cou terclockwise past
click. Rotate the co trol clockwise for a comfortable audio volume level.
2. CHANNEL SELECTOR: This switch is used to select a y o e of the 40
Citize s Ba d cha els. Cha el 9 has bee reserved by the D.O.C. for
emerge cy commu icatio s i volvi g the immédiate safety of life of i dividuals
or immédiate protectio of property. Cha el 9 may also be used to re der
assista ce to a motorist.
3. MODE SELECTOR: This switch selects AM, USB or LSB mode of operatio .
This selector cha ges the mode of operatio of both tra smitter a d receiver
simulta eously.
Set the selector to the mode o which you wish to commu icate. For easier
ide tificatio of the mode, LED mode i dicator is provided i three differe t
colors, gree for AM, yellow for USB, a d red for LSB.
