You have just received the Epi-Watcher by Vahlkamp. Study this manual closely

beforehand and familiarise yourself with the device. Setting the device for the

first time is very important. This manual describes how the Epi-Watcher is to be

used.

It is essential that the Epi-Watcher is set correctly in order to achieve optimal

detection. It is important that you realise that the reliability of the Epi-watcher

in detecting epileptic attacks is not 100%. You should furthermore always take

into account that the device may fail to register an attack due to unforeseen

circumstances. There are circumstances that prevent the device from functioning

correctly. The user should test the Epi-Watcher regularly so as to reduce the

chance of this going unnoticed. The doctor/neurologist establishes the medical

grounds with respect to the use of the equipment and is ultimately responsible.

The alarm detects small movements and shocks due to the highly sensitive piezo

sensor, abnormal movements. This allows the care provider to be warned. The

sensor serves in the epicenter of the movements/shocks to be placed, hence the

name Epi Watcher.

1. Installatie

1.1 Onderdelen

U heeft de volgende onderdelen gekregen voor het installeren van een

goed werkende EPI-Watcher (zie ﬁguur 1):

1. EPI-Watcher unit, wanneer correct aangesloten bewegingen

analyseert en alarm geeft bij detectie van een epileptische aanval.

2. Sensor, deze geeft de bewegingen door aan de EPI-Watcher.

3. Adapter, om de EPI-Watcher van spanning te voorzien.

1.2 Aansluiten

De EPI-Watcher is eenvoudig aan te sluiten.

1. Sluit de sensor aan op de EPI-Watcher en borg de stekker.

2. Plaats de sensor onder het matras* ongeveer op de hoogte van de

onderrug.

3. Steek de adapter in het stopcontact.

4. Sluit de adapter aan op de EPI-Watcher.

5. De EPI-Watcher start op en laat dit zien op het scherm.

6. Voor alarm meldingen kunt u de EPI-Watcher aansluiten op een

zusteroproepsysteem of een Vahlkamp Teleroep. Voor meer informatie

zie hoofstuk 9.

ATTENTIE

Bij het aanzetten van de EPI-Watcher wordt de sensor automatisch gekalibreerd.

Zorg dat tijdens het aanzetten van de EPI-Watcher de sensor in rust is, zodat

deze gekalibreerd kan worden.

1.1 Parts

You have received the following parts that you will need to install a properly

functioning Epi-Watcher (see figure 1):

1. Epi-Watcher unit, which analyses movements if it is connected properly and

gives an alarm when abnormal movements are detected.

2. Sensor; it relays the movements to the Epi-Watcher.

3. Tele-call receiver for the purpose of receiving the alarm in another room

with a range up to 20-25 metres.

1.2 Connecting the device

The Epi-Watcher is easy to connect.

1. Connect the sensor to the Epi-Watcher.

2. Place the sensor under the mattress* approx. at the position of the lower

back.

3. Connect the adapter to the Epi-Watcher.

4. Plug the adapter into the power socket.

5. This will start the Epi-Watcher, as shown on the screen.

6. It is also possible to connect the Epi-Watcher to a nurse call system for alarm

reports. See chapter 9 for more information.

ATTENTION

The sensor is automatically calibrated when the Epi-Watcher is switched on. Do

make sure that the sensor is stable when you switch on the Epi-Watcher, so that

it can be properly calibrated.

1.3 Using the device for the first time

The Epi-Watcher has been designed to make things easier for you. The same

goes for the initial settings. The Epi-Watcher sets itself based on the answers to

a number of questions. You can always readjust the settings should you not be

satisfied with the result. Chapter 2 will help you on your way to adjusting the

initial settings.

By reading this manual, you will gain a feeling for and understanding of the

Epi-Watcher. It is, after all, important that you know which adjustments you can

make. The Epi-Watcher is equipped with all kinds of intelligent functions. You

decide for yourself which functions are important. The manual describes all of

the functions, as well as their purpose, allowing you to make the correct decision

for yourself regarding which setting best suits your situation.

2. Setting the device for the first time

To make things easier for you, the Epi-Watcher offers the possibility of establishing

the initial settings automatically. You can select this function in the menu. Based

on the answers to various questions, the Epi-Watcher independently calculates

the settings for the detection of abnormal movements. Because every individual

and every situation is different, it will be necessary to improve these settings

in the future. The initial settings will in any event ensure an adequate estimate

of the necessary settings. The object is to have the Epi-Watcher learn from the

movement behaviour of the person concerned so as to come to the optimal

settings for the best result. One may therefore expect more false alarms at first.

Use the arrow to the right to access the Menu. Once in the menu, you can use

the arrow to the right, under WIJZ, to adjust the setting with the arrow up or

down. You can save the data that you selected using the arrow to the left, under

OPSL. Use the down arrow to go to the next step. Press the down arrow if you

do not wish to change anything. Note: the screen returns to the main menu after

10 seconds. It is therefore important to be prepared for adjusting the settings

before you proceed to implement these in the unit.

This brings you to the Initial Settings. Select

OK if you wish to change or set these. Then

press YES. Use the down arrow if you do want

to change these. If you opt to change one

setting, then you will automatically be given the opportunity to adjust all the

other settings. You will have to go through the whole list. You will then come

back to Initial Settings where you can go to Detection Settings using the down

arrow. Repeat this with the Detection Settings. Continue on through the entire

menu until you return to Sound. Press the arrow to the left to leave the menu.

Enter your body weight here.

Choose between: 0-40, 40-80 and 80-120 kg.

2. Eerste keer instellen

Om het u makkelijker te maken, beschikt de EPI-Watcher over de mogelijkheid

de eerste instelling automatisch te doen. Deze functie kunt u selecteren in het

menu. Op basis van verschillende vragen, berekent de EPI-Watcher de instel-

lingen voor de detectie van epileptische aanvallen. Omdat iedere persoon en

situatie anders is, zullen deze instellingen in de toekomst verbeterd moeten

worden. De eerste instelling zorgt er in ieder geval voor dat er al een goede

inschatting van de instellingen wordt gemaakt. Het is dan ook de bedoeling dat

de EPIWatcher leert van het bewegingsgedrag van de persoon en zodoende de

optimale instelling kan vinden voor het beste resultaat. In het begin zullen er

dan ook meer valse alarmen plaatsvinden.

U kunt in het menu de functie selecteren om de eerste instelling te maken. De

ﬁguur hieronder laat het scherm in het menu zien, waarmee u de eerste instel-

ling kunt selecteren. Wanneer u deze in het scherm ziet verschijnen dient u op

de rechter pijl knop te drukken om de functie te activeren. Omdat deze functie

de huidige instellingen overschrijft, wordt de vraag “Weet u het zeker?”

gesteld. Als u verder wilt gaan dient u op “Ja” (linker knop) te drukken.

U dient zes vragen te beantwoorden. Met de pijl knoppen omhoog en

omlaag selecteert u het gewenste antwoord. Door op de rechter pijl knop

te drukken bevestigt u het geselecteerde antwoord. Hieronder ziet u de

verschillende schermen en daarnaast informatie over de gestelde vraag.

Geef hier het lichaamsgewicht op.

Keuze uit: 0-40, 40-80 en 80-120 kg.

Geef hier de lichaamslengte op.

Keuze uit: 0-50, 50-100, 100-150 en

150-200 meter.
