You have just received the Epi-Watcher by Vahlkamp. Study this manual closely
beforehand and familiarise yourself with the device. Setting the device for the
first time is very important. This manual describes how the Epi-Watcher is to be
used.
It is essential that the Epi-Watcher is set correctly in order to achieve optimal
detection. It is important that you realise that the reliability of the Epi-watcher
in detecting epileptic attacks is not 100%. You should furthermore always take
into account that the device may fail to register an attack due to unforeseen
circumstances. There are circumstances that prevent the device from functioning
correctly. The user should test the Epi-Watcher regularly so as to reduce the
chance of this going unnoticed. The doctor/neurologist establishes the medical
grounds with respect to the use of the equipment and is ultimately responsible.
The alarm detects small movements and shocks due to the highly sensitive piezo
sensor, abnormal movements. This allows the care provider to be warned. The
sensor serves in the epicenter of the movements/shocks to be placed, hence the
name Epi Watcher.

1. Installatie
1.1 Onderdelen
U heeft de volgende onderdelen gekregen voor het installeren van een
goed werkende EPI-Watcher (zie figuur 1):
1. EPI-Watcher unit, wanneer correct aangesloten bewegingen
analyseert en alarm geeft bij detectie van een epileptische aanval.
2. Sensor, deze geeft de bewegingen door aan de EPI-Watcher.
3. Adapter, om de EPI-Watcher van spanning te voorzien.

1.2 Aansluiten
De EPI-Watcher is eenvoudig aan te sluiten.
1. Sluit de sensor aan op de EPI-Watcher en borg de stekker.
2. Plaats de sensor onder het matras* ongeveer op de hoogte van de
onderrug.
3. Steek de adapter in het stopcontact.
4. Sluit de adapter aan op de EPI-Watcher.
5. De EPI-Watcher start op en laat dit zien op het scherm.
6. Voor alarm meldingen kunt u de EPI-Watcher aansluiten op een
zusteroproepsysteem of een Vahlkamp Teleroep. Voor meer informatie
zie hoofstuk 9.
ATTENTIE
Bij het aanzetten van de EPI-Watcher wordt de sensor automatisch gekalibreerd.
Zorg dat tijdens het aanzetten van de EPI-Watcher de sensor in rust is, zodat
deze gekalibreerd kan worden.
1.1 Parts
You have received the following parts that you will need to install a properly
functioning Epi-Watcher (see figure 1):
1. Epi-Watcher unit, which analyses movements if it is connected properly and
gives an alarm when abnormal movements are detected.
2. Sensor; it relays the movements to the Epi-Watcher.
3. Tele-call receiver for the purpose of receiving the alarm in another room
with a range up to 20-25 metres.
1.2 Connecting the device
The Epi-Watcher is easy to connect.
1. Connect the sensor to the Epi-Watcher.
2. Place the sensor under the mattress* approx. at the position of the lower
back.
3. Connect the adapter to the Epi-Watcher.
4. Plug the adapter into the power socket.
5. This will start the Epi-Watcher, as shown on the screen.
6. It is also possible to connect the Epi-Watcher to a nurse call system for alarm
reports. See chapter 9 for more information.
ATTENTION
The sensor is automatically calibrated when the Epi-Watcher is switched on. Do
make sure that the sensor is stable when you switch on the Epi-Watcher, so that
it can be properly calibrated.

1.3 Using the device for the first time
The Epi-Watcher has been designed to make things easier for you. The same
goes for the initial settings. The Epi-Watcher sets itself based on the answers to
a number of questions. You can always readjust the settings should you not be
satisfied with the result. Chapter 2 will help you on your way to adjusting the
initial settings.
By reading this manual, you will gain a feeling for and understanding of the
Epi-Watcher. It is, after all, important that you know which adjustments you can
make. The Epi-Watcher is equipped with all kinds of intelligent functions. You
decide for yourself which functions are important. The manual describes all of
the functions, as well as their purpose, allowing you to make the correct decision
for yourself regarding which setting best suits your situation.
2. Setting the device for the first time
To make things easier for you, the Epi-Watcher offers the possibility of establishing
the initial settings automatically. You can select this function in the menu. Based
on the answers to various questions, the Epi-Watcher independently calculates
the settings for the detection of abnormal movements. Because every individual
and every situation is different, it will be necessary to improve these settings
in the future. The initial settings will in any event ensure an adequate estimate
of the necessary settings. The object is to have the Epi-Watcher learn from the
movement behaviour of the person concerned so as to come to the optimal
settings for the best result. One may therefore expect more false alarms at first.
Use the arrow to the right to access the Menu. Once in the menu, you can use
the arrow to the right, under WIJZ, to adjust the setting with the arrow up or
down. You can save the data that you selected using the arrow to the left, under
OPSL. Use the down arrow to go to the next step. Press the down arrow if you
do not wish to change anything. Note: the screen returns to the main menu after
10 seconds. It is therefore important to be prepared for adjusting the settings
before you proceed to implement these in the unit.
This brings you to the Initial Settings. Select
OK if you wish to change or set these. Then
press YES. Use the down arrow if you do want
to change these. If you opt to change one
setting, then you will automatically be given the opportunity to adjust all the
other settings. You will have to go through the whole list. You will then come
back to Initial Settings where you can go to Detection Settings using the down
arrow. Repeat this with the Detection Settings. Continue on through the entire
menu until you return to Sound. Press the arrow to the left to leave the menu.

dan ook meer valse alarmen plaatsvinden.
U kunt in het menu de functie selecteren om de eerste instelling te maken. De
figuur hieronder laat het scherm in het menu zien, waarmee u de eerste instel-
ling kunt selecteren. Wanneer u deze in het scherm ziet verschijnen dient u op
de rechter pijl knop te drukken om de functie te activeren. Omdat deze functie
de huidige instellingen overschrijft, wordt de vraag “Weet u het zeker?”
gesteld. Als u verder wilt gaan dient u op “Ja” (linker knop) te drukken.
U dient zes vragen te beantwoorden. Met de pijl knoppen omhoog en
omlaag selecteert u het gewenste antwoord. Door op de rechter pijl knop
te drukken bevestigt u het geselecteerde antwoord. Hieronder ziet u de
verschillende schermen en daarnaast informatie over de gestelde vraag.
Geef hier het lichaamsgewicht op.

Na het beantwoorden van alle zes vragen, berekent de EPI-Watcher voor u de
optimale instelling. Omdat dit proces enige tijd in beslag kan nemen, toont de
EPI-Watcher “Even geduld aub...” in het scherm. Wanneer de nieuwe instellin-
gen zijn overgenomen, keert de EPI-Watcher terug naar het menu waar u deze
functie heeft geselecteerd.

The Epi-Watcher will calculate your optimal settings after you have answered
all six questions. As this process takes some time, you will see ’One moment
please...’ on the screen of the Epi-Watcher. Once the new settings have been
implemented, the Epi-Watcher will return to the menu where you selected this
function.
ATTENTION:
the Epi-Watcher is not suitable for a waterbed or spring.
3. General use
The Epi-Watcher is ready for use as soon as it is started up and it will generate
an alarm signal that an abnormal movement has been detected according to the
system. The figure below provides a schematic representation of the Epi-Watcher
with the screen and buttons that are shown at the time of detection.

mene scherm, getoond in de de figuur hierboven, kunt u door middel van de
linker knop het logboek openen en met de rechter knop het configuratiemenu
openen. Voor meer informatie over deze functies zie hoofdstuk 6 en 7. De fi-
guur hieronder benadrukt hoe de functies van de linker en rechter knop door
het scherm bepaald worden. De knoppen naar boven en naar beneden worden
gebruikt voor het wijzigen van configuratie waarden of the selecteren van een
ander item.

The date and time are shown on the top line of the screen. The function that
the user can start by pressing the left or right button is generally shown on the
bottom line. In the case of the general screen, as shown in the figure above,
you can open the logbook using the left button and the configuration menu
using the right button. See chapters 6 and 7 for more information. The figure
below emphasises how the screen determines the functions of the left and right
buttons. The buttons up and down are used to change configuration values or
to select another item.

4. screen icons
Icons may appear in the detection screen as described in the previous chapter.
The figure below shows all of the icons that may appear on the Epi-Watcher.
* The system generates an alarm each time that the Epi-Watcher detects an abnormal movement for
the system. A message of this alert is then entered into the logbook.
5. Alarm
The Epi-Watcher continuously reads the sensor and analyses the signals. Using
various technologies, it is determined whether or not it concerns an abnormal
movement. The settings of the system play a huge role in this respect. You
are referred to chapter 6 for more information regarding the settings of the
Epi-Watcher.
The system generates an alarm each time that the system detects an abnormal
movement. The Epi-Watcher generates a sound signal during an alarm and it
switches on external equipment; the nurse call system, for example, or the Vahl-
kamp Tele-call (see chapter 9). The figure below shows the screen that appears
whenever an alarm is generated. The time of the alarm is shown at the top left.
The time, in minutes, during which the system generates an alarm is shown on
the bottom line. It is indicated at the bottom right that the user can switch off
the alarm using the right button.
It is possible that the Epi-Watcher has been set to restore itself automatically,
which means that you will not need to switch the alarm off yourself. Whenever
you do switch off the alarm, the system will ask you if you are sure. The reason
for this is that the alarm cannot be accidentally switched off due to unforeseen
situations.

4. Scherm iconen
In het detectie scherm, zoals in het vorige hoofdstuk is beschreven,
kunnen er iconen verschijnen. De figuur hieronder laat alle iconen zien
die de EPI-Watcher kan tonen.

- Er is een nieuw bericht1 aan het logboek toegevoegd

5. Alarm
De EPI-Watcher leest voortdurend de sensor uit en analyseert de signalen. Met
behulp van verschillende technologieën wordt er bekeken of er sprake is van
een epileptische aanval. Hierbij speelt de instelling van het systeem een grote
rol. Meer informatie met betrekking tot het instellen van de EPI-Watcher zie
hoofdstuk 6.
Op het moment dat het systeem een epileptische aanval detecteert, genereert
het systeem een alarm. Tijdens het alarm geeft de EPIWatcher een geluidssig-
naal en schakelt externe apparaten in; bijvoorbeeld het zusteroproepsysteem of
de Vahlkamp Teleroep (zie hoofdstuk 9). De figuur hieronder geeft het scherm
weer dat tijdens een alarm wordt getoond. Linksboven wordt de tijd wanneer
het alarm plaatsvond weergegeven. Op de onderste regel wordt de tijd weer-
gegeven hoe lang het systeem het alarm weergeeft in minuten. Rechtsonder
wordt weergegeven dat door middel van het bedienen van de rechter knop het
alarm uitgezet kan worden.
Het is mogelijk dat de EPI-Watcher is ingesteld om automatisch te herstellen,
zodoende hoeft u het alarm zelf niet uit te schakelen. Op het moment dat u
het alarm uitschakelt vraagt het systeem of u het zeker weet. De reden hiervoor
is dat het alarm niet per ongeluk uitgeschakeld kan worden door onverwachte
situaties.

By selecting the function menu by pressing the right button on the detection
screen, as described in chapter 3, you can access the configuration menu. This
menu allows you to configure the Epi-Watcher to suit your needs. Each section
of this chapter describes a component of the configuration menu.
6.1 Alarm sound
Description
The Epi-Watcher generates a sound signal whenever there is reason for an
alarm. The user can adjust the device to generate, or not generate, a sound
signal in the case of an alarm.

6.2 Switching off the alarm
Description
This setting allows the user to choose to have the alarm switch off manually or
automatically. If the system is set to switch off automatically, then it will return
to its active detection state in 30 seconds.

6. System configuration 6.3 Initial setting
Description
This function facilitates the initial setting. The system calculates the initial
settings based on the user’s answers to a number of questions. You are referred
to chapter 2 for more information. Make sure that the present data is over-
written when this function is carried out.
6.4 Setting the detection algorithm
Description
By selecting this function, the user can set the detection algorithm separately.
The user can set various values of the algorithm.

6.5 Wireless alarm
Description
A standard accessory of the Epi-Watcher concerns a wireless communication
unit. This unit allows you to communicate wirelessly with the Vahlkamp Tele-call
so that you can relay the alarm within a radius of 20-25 metres.

6.6 Setting the date and time
Description
The date and time as recorded in the system may alter when you select this
function. It is important that these are recorded correctly as the messages in the
logbook are linked to a date and time before they are stored.
6.7 Deleting messages in logbook
Description
All of the messages in the logbook will be deleted when you select this function.
7. Logbook
The user can select the function ’log’ on the detection screen. He/she can view
the messages that have been stored in the logbook. All alerts are stored here.
A total of 20 messages can be stored. Once the memory is full, the oldest mes-
sage will be removed as soon as a new message is stored. And so an overview
of previous alerts is always available. The logbook screen is shown in the figure
below.
It is indicated on screen that it concerns an alert (top left). The message number
is shown at the top right and it indicates in this case that four messages have
been stored. The bottom line shows the date and time at which the alarm
occurred. Press the right button to leave the logbook and return to the detection
screen. You can scroll through the messages using the up and down buttons.
The message number will indicate 20 once the logbook is full.

7. Logboek
In het detectie scherm kan men de functie “log” kiezen. De gebruiker kan de
berichten bekijken die in het logboek zijn opgeslagen. Alle alarmmeldingen
worden hierin opgeslagen. Er kunnen in totaal 20 berichten worden opgesla-
gen. Als het bericht geheugen vol is, wordt bij een volgend bericht de oudste
verwijderd. Zodoende is er altijd een goed overzicht van de alarmen die in het
verleden zijn opgetreden. De figuur hieronder laat het logboek scherm zien.
In het scherm wordt aangegeven dat het om een alarm gaat (linksboven). Het
bericht nummer staat rechtsboven en geeft in dit geval aan dat er vier berich-
ten opgeslagen zijn. De onderste regel geeft de datum en tijd weer wanneer
het alarm is ontstaan. Door op de rechter knop de drukken wordt het logboek
verlaten en keert men terug naar detectie. Door op de boven en onder knop-
pen te drukken kan men door de berichten heen lopen. Wanneer het logboek
helemaal vol zit, staat het bericht nummer op 20.

8. Optimal setting
It may be difficult to determine your optimal setting. This is partly because
every movement is different. The Epi-Watcher can help you determine these
settings. Should you at anytime not be satisfied with the present performance
of the Epi-Watcher, then you can always opt to adjust the settings of the algo-
rithms. You can do so manually. However, this is often difficult and may lead to
frustration, because of a lack of experience with the settings of the Epi-Watcher.
The Epi-Watcher can also help you determine the optimal setting. The Epi-Watcher
constantly analyses the sensor signal. During this analysis, the system examines
which settings best suit the person concerned. Whenever you are not satisfied,
you can always return to Initial Setting or Detection Settings. The Epi-Watcher
alters the present settings based on the analysis. And so the system works its way
to the optimal settings in this way. Should you still not be satisfied with the result
in the future, then you can always opt to carry out this function again.
It is not always possible to determine the optimal settings straight away. Give the
Epi-Watcher some time and repeat the function each time you are not satisfied.
The optimal setting cannot be found at all in rare cases.
9. External equipment
9.1 Nurse call system
It is possible to connect the Epi-Watcher to a nurse call system; the alarm signal
is received by a pager within a range of approx. 300 metres. The system includes
a standard connection to that end. Vahlkamp has suitable plugs for all of the
most common call systems. These can be supplied with the Epi-Watcher.
9.2 Tele-call
The Tele-call system by Vahlkamp signals an alarm through wireless communi-
cation. The Tele-call system may be the solution if a nurse call system is not an
option. It is certainly a convenient aid in terms of private use. The alarm signal
is detected by a receiver that is installed within a radius of 25 metres of the
Epi-Watcher and generates an acoustic signal. This receiver can be used in some
other room. The Epi-Watcher includes this wireless communication unit as a
standard accessory. The receiver immediately relays the alarm signal.
9.3 PA 500+ (Personal alarm)
The Epi-Watcher can be easily connected to the Vahlkamp PA 500+ system. This
is a sophisticated personal alarm that contacts (pre-set) telephone numbers. This
enables you to call in assistance from a distance. This system is often used for
people who live independently and sometimes require help. In addition to being
able to live independently, this system ensures safety as it always contacts some-
one whenever an alert has been generated.

10. Maintenance
Never use water and/or cleaning agents when cleaning the equipment, only use
a dry cloth.
11. Guarantee
Vahlkamp observes a guarantee period of 1 year for all purchases, subject to the
normal use of this product. Any repairs that may be necessary during this period
will be free of charge.
Defects resulting from incompetent use, breakage, falls, disassembly, fire damage
and/or water damage, neglect or incompetent repairs are not covered by the
guarantee. If necessary, the buyer is to call upon Vahlkamp, which will then see
to the repair.
12. Liability
For damages suffered as a result of shortcoming, an unlawful act or otherwise,
the seller is only held liable if the damages are the direct result of and only result
from gross negligence on the part of the seller.
The seller is not under any circumstances liable for damages as a result of
exceeding terms, neither is it liable for any consequential losses or indirect
losses, including damages due to profit loss or missed savings.
