Safety glasses must be worn at all
times in work areas.
Gloves must be worn at all times when
handling equipment.
Steel cap boots must be worn at all
times in work areas.
Hard hat must be worn at all times
while working.
PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS
1. Ensure that the PORTABOOM® PRE-START inspection checklist is completed prior to utilisation,
PORTABOOM® must be in a safe and working condition prior touse.
2. Faulty equipment must not be used. Immediately report suspect equipment toyour Supervisor.
PORTABOOM® SITE OPERATIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
One operator operating one PORTABOOM®:
1. Park vehicle / trailer used to transport PORTABOOM® at setup location on as close to level
ground as possible.
2. Unload PORTABOOM® Tower using safe manual handling techniques including straight
back and bending at the knees.
3. Must be inside an existing TTM worksite.
4. Must be positioned so they are clear of any moving or operating plant and/or machinery.
5. Must not undertake any other task or work activity whilst in control of the PORTABOOM
units.
6. It is recommended that the PORTABOOM® operator is not further than 75mtrs from the
PORTABOOM® Tower.
7. Must have a visual of 120m on the approach to the PORTABOOM® Tower you are
operating.
8. Must be ready and in position to invoke manual or STOP/SLOW operation if required.
PORTABOOM® must not be operated unless it is in a safe condition for use.

One operator operating multiple PORTABOOM®S:
1. Must be inside an existing TTM worksite.
2. Must be positioned so they are clear of any moving or operating plant and/or machinery.
3. Must not undertake any other task or work activity whilst in control of the PORTABOOM
units.
4. Must have a visual of 120m on the approach to each PORTABOOM® Towers you are
operating.
5. Must be within 75mtrs of all PORTABOOM® Towers.
6. Must label PORTABOOM® Towers with magnets provided.
7. Must utilize remote control caddy at all times ensuring the remote controls are labelled
same as the PORTABOOM® Tower magnets.
8. Always remain in a central position when operating PORTABOOM® Towers.
9. If a PORTABOOM® Tower fails you must:-
a) be prepared to manually operate the failed Tower and operate the “other” Tower by
using the remote control.
OR
b) be prepared to perform STOP/SLOW in place of the failed Tower and operate the
“other” Tower by using the remote control.

GENERAL
•Ensure all persons, hands and limbs are clear from crush / drop zones at all times.
•Ensure equipment is loaded and unloaded as specified in this procedure and all items are secure
prior to driving.
HOUSE-KEEPING
•Switch off equipment.
•Leave the equipment and work area in a safe, clean and tidy state.
•Ensure NO equipment is left on the ground where it can be damaged.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS
•Falling objects.
•Trapping hazards.
•Crushing hazards.
•Entanglement hazards.
•MH hazards.
•People.
•Damaged plant.

PORTABOOM® SET UP

Once arriving to site, review Traffic
Management Diagram (TMD) and identify
required positions of PORTABOOM® unit(s)
on site.
“MANUAL TRAFFIC CONTROL”TA2/TA21 sign
is to be placed in accordance with dimension
“C” sign spacing.
Diagram F2.14a is based on diagram F2.14
TWO-WAY TWO-LANE ROAD, single lane
alternating flow which has been modified to
incorporate the PORTABOOM® unit.
Note: PORTABOOM® Operators are to
remain at least 2m away from the live lane
an d in a safe location.

Prior to commencement of PORTABOOM®
setup, an assessment of overhead hazards
must be conducted.
3.
If overhead hazards have been identified
where a PORTABOOM® needs to be
positioned, the Site Traffic Management
Supervisor (STMS) in consultation with the
PORTABOOM® Operator may be able to
reposition the PORTABOOM® in order to
remove the overhead hazard.
If a new position has been identified, ensure
that the scope of works can be maintained,
the change of location is recorded on the
On-site Record and the TMD is amended to
show the new location of the
PORTABOOM®.

Prior to setup, assess weather conditions
by checking an approved or trusted
weather radar for current and forecasted
weather conditions.
If the current or forecasted weather advises
of strong winds exceeding 50kph (kilometers
per hour) then add weight to the Stability
Legs using sandbags when setting up
PORTABOOM®s as per steps 34, 35, 36 and
37.
Note 1: It is mandatory to remain diligent and
vigilant with regards to environmental
changes on the work site at all times –
Environmental changes could result in having
to add weight to the PORTABOOM® legs to
ensure safety and stability.
Note 2: It is also mandatory to routinely (at
least every 2 hours) check the forecasted
weather conditions and take a proactive
approach to securing the PORTABOOM®’/s
with additional weight if and when
necessary.

5.
PORTABOOM® Tower Setup Process
As per steps 2 and 3, identify potential
hazards prior to positioning PORTABOOM®
i.e. Look for low lying power lines, tree
branches, street lights, road signage which
the PORTABOOM® Boom Arm may come in
contact with in its setup and operation.
(PORTABOOM® Boom Arm raised)
Ensure PORTABOOM® is setup with
PORTABOOM® Boom Arm raised after
identifying a position clear of all hazards
Also noting that when on site there may be a
requirement due to loose surface conditions,
uneven surfaces and/or restricted spaces to
move the PORTABOOM® Tower to a location
that would be more suitable for operation (i.e.
a position that would be more level).
Ensure any changes are updated on the On-
site Record and TMD.

6.
Prior to installation make sure there are
appropriate TTM controls in place for the
protection of the installer(s).
Position PORTABOOM® Tower in the
shoulder/kerb for set up. Ensuring the shaft
is facing the footpath
7.
Once in position enable PORTABOOM®
Tower brakes by pushing down on brake
pedals at the bottom of the PORTABOOM®
Towers.

8.
Remove Boom Arm from carry bag.
Position the Boom Arm at approx. 45
degrees to the Tower.

9.
Align the Boom Arm billet tabs (indicated by
arrows).
With the channels on the shaft (indicated by
arrows).
10.
Position the Boom Arm square onto the
shaft and align the billet tabs with the
channels on the shaft.

Once aligned connect Boom Arm to Tower
by pushing firmly.
Once connected manually reposition the
Boom Arm to a vertical position.

12.
Then holding firmly pull the Boom Arm
towards you.
13.
Lock Boom Arm into place using the locking
mechanism on the Tower.
14.
Using the key provided align the cut out on
the key with the red dot on the lock and
open up the small compartment panel.
Note: If the cut out on the key isn’t lined up
with the red dot on the lock you will not be
able to open the panel.

15.
Turn power “ON” (Green LED will
illuminate).
16.
Press “RED PUSH BUTTON” to move the
Boom Arm into a horizontal position.
17.
When the Boom Arm is horizontal proceed
to the next step.

18.
Loosen the two (2) Boom Arm tightening
screws.
19.
Extend the Boom Arm to the span required,
ensuring that the end of the Boom Arm is at
least 500mm from the center line of the
road.
20.
Once the correct span is established hand
tighten using the two (2) Boom Arm
tightening screws.

21.
Attach “STOP” sign using the buckles straps
to secure the sign, ensuring that one buckle
is on the fixed Boom Arm and the other
buckle is on the extension.

22.
Check manual operation of the unit (UP,
DOWN, STOP) using the “RED PUSH
BUTTON” in the small compartment panel.
23.
Check the operation of both remote controls
(UP, DOWN, STOP) using the 2x ONE button
remote controls provided.
Note: All remotes are labelled (front and
back) with a unit number to match the
Tower unit number.
24.
Check bounce back operation by pressing
the remote whilst holding your hand under
the Boom Arm.

Disable Brakes.
26.
Ensure PORTABOOM® Boom Arm is Vertical.

27. Reposition PORTABOOM® Tower into
“LIVE” Operational Position.

28.
Enables brakes.
29.
Secure stability legs by first unwinding the
wing nut to maximum.
30.
Placing one hand on the wing nut bolt and
the other hand at the base of the leg pull up
slightly and then slide leg into fixing position
ensuring the rubber stopper is firmly on the
ground.

31.
Once in position tighten the wing nut to
secure leg into position
32.
Stability Leg Setup complete.
33.
Leave PORTABOOM® in an upright
operational position until you are ready to
commence controlling traffic.
Ensure approved TTM as per the approved
TMP is installed in accordance with the
selected PORTABOOM® TMD.
Repeat steps for setting up additional
PORTABOOM® units

34.
In the event of windy or forecasted windy
conditions sand bags MUST be applied to all
four PORTABOOM® legs for additional
stability.
Take hooks out of the side pocket of the
carry bag.
35.
Fix sandbag hooks to all 4 stability legs by
placing the hook through the hole at the
back of the stability leg.
36.
Once hook is through the hole let hang.
37.
Add a maximum of 2x sandbags to all
stability legs.
