INTRODUCTION
The Vicair®Academy Replacement Mattress 415 is designed for patients who have a
highly increased risk of decubitus, and for patients who have Stage I-IV decubitus but
are relatively mobile. Please read the whole manual before use.
For a schematic display of the mattress, see the cut-away view A and gures B and C.
Inner mattress
The inner mattress is made of compartments (g. A-1). Each compartment is lled
with a specic number of triangular, air lled SmartCells™ which allow optimum
pressure distribution. To reduce shear forces, a layer of smooth fabric (g. A-2) is
tted over the mattress.
A foam layer is incorporated in the base of the mattress for extra stability. The
compartments can be accessed from the underside through zippers (g. B).
Outer cover
The outer cover (g. A-3) is made of low-friction waterproof material. The cover ts
loosely over the inner mattress, to prevent “hammocking” and to allow sufcient
immersion into the mattress. Always use the mattress with the outer cover in place.
Head and foot end
The mattress has a head end and a foot end, indicated by a label (g. A-4) and
pictograms on the cover.
Information panel
A zippered pouch at the foot end contains an information panel, showing the mattress
type and important user information (g. C). This is especially useful for institutional
use.
Carrying handles
Each side of the mattress is tted with carrying handles, which are strong enough to
enable an emergency evacuation with a patient on the mattress.
Fixation rings and buckles
The corners of the mattress are tted with double rings for loosely attaching the bed
sheet. Two buckles are tted on the head side to connect an extension piece.

USE
INSTALLATION
GB
The Vicair®Academy Replacement Mattress 415 is ready for use.
We recommend to carry out the following checks during rst use, preferably together
with your caregiver/therapist.
Checking the mattress size
Make sure the mattress ts the dimensions of the bed on which it is to be used.
The mattress can be proled to any desired position of the bed frame.
Checking for “bottoming out”
Your body should be fully supported so that no part can make contact with the bottom
layer of the mattress. Checking for “bottoming out” should be done during rst use
and after adjustments to the mattress lling.
Do not use the mattress if bottoming out occurs. In most cases, adjusting the lling
grade of the compartments will solve the problem.
Adjusting the mattress lling
If necessary, the rmness can be adjusted by removing (or adding) cells from the
various compartments of the mattress.
Checking for redness of the skin
Check your skin regularly for redness, especially during the rst few days. If severe
redness occurs, stop using the mattress. Consult your therapist or dealer.
Making transfers
Make sure to have a good support during transfers to and from the mattress. Make
the transfer with the bed in its lowest position and preferably while slightly leaning
backward (knees higher than hips). Take care not to slide off the low-friction cover
when sitting on the edge of the mattress.
Use at high altitude
Because each SmartCell™ is lled with air, the mattress may behave differently when
used at high altitude or in an aeroplane. Under such circumstances, the rmness of
the mattress can be adjusted by removing a few cells from each compartment. Vicair
recommends not to use the mattress above 2400 m (8000 ft) ASL (above sea level).
User weight
Maximum user weight 250kg.

Transferring the mattress to another user
Before allowing a second person to use the mattress, clean the inner mattress
and wash the outer cover. Disinfect both parts. Make sure the mattress is correctly
adjusted to the second person.
Resuscitation
The mattress provides a rm enough support to allow resuscitation (CPR). It is not
necessary to use a support (crash) board.
Replacing the outer cover
Under normal use, Vicair recommends replacement of the outer cover every year.
Replacement covers can be purchased separately.
Flammability
Do not use or leave the mattress close to a naked ame or a high temperature heat
source.
Caution: Do not steam clean or autoclave the mattress. The mattress cannot
withstand excessive heat or pressure.
Checking for wear and deated cells
Every three months, check the mattress for wear and deated cells. In case of serious
damage, or a large number of deated cells, stop using the mattress. Consult your
dealer.
Cleaning the inner mattress
• Wipe the inner mattress with a damp cloth using a mild detergent. Difcult spots
or stains can be cleaned by rst saturating the spot and then using a soft brush to
loosen the dirt.
• Do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaners or sharp objects to clean the inner
mattress.
• Do not immerse the inner mattress in water or any other liquid.
• Do not wash the lled inner mattress, or the cells, in a washing machine.
Cleaning the outer cover
The outer cover can be machine washed. See the instructions on the label attached to
the inside of the cover.
