IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
1. To protect against risk of electrical shock, do not put motor base in water or other liquid.
2. Close adult supervision is necessary when machine is used by or near children.
3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet when the Vitamix machine is not in use, before
disassembling, when putting on or taking o parts, and before cleaning, other than washing
the container.
4. Appliance must be positioned so the power cord plug is accessible.
5. The PBS must be plugged in to its own dedicated power supply or outlet.
6. Never come in contact with moving parts, especially the blades.
7. Do not operate any machine that malfunctions, has a damaged cord or plug, has been
dropped or is damaged in any manner. If you purchased your equipment in the U.S.A.,
call Vitamix Technical Support, 800.886.5235 for examination, repair, possible replacement, or
electrical or mechanical adjustment. If you purchased outside the U.S.A., please contact your
local authorized Vitamix Distributor, or contact Vitamix International Division at +1.440.782.2450

8. Do not use any attachment or accessory that is not recommended or sold by Vitamix. Doing so
will void the warranty. Alteration or modification of this product in any form is not recommended
as such may result in bodily harm.
9. Do not use outdoors.
10. Do not let the power cord touch hot surfaces or hang over edge of table or counter.
11. Do not place the machine on or near a hot gas or electrical burner, in a heated oven or allow
machine to touch hot surfaces. External heat sources can damage the machine.
12. Keep hands and utensils out of the ice bin and container while motor is running to prevent the
possibility of severe personal injury and/or damage to the machine. A rubber spatula may be
used in the container, but only when the machine is not running.
13. Do not fill ice bin with anything other than ice.
14. Ice shaver blade is sharp. Handle carefully. Do not operate with loose, nicked or damaged blades.
15. Do not disconnect ice bin interlock. Doing so may lead to serious injury.
16. Blades are sharp. Handle carefully.
• Never try to remove the blades while container is sitting on the motor base.
• Do not operate with loose, nicked or damaged blades – replace immediately.
• To reduce the risk of personal injury, never place blade assembly on motor base without the
Vitamix container properly attached.
17. The maximum capacity is equivalent to the ounces (liters) listed on the container, i.e.,
48 oz. / 1,4 L, and is substantially less with thick mixtures.
18. Do not use more than 5 cups (1,3 liters) of cleaning solution when cleaning the ice bin.
See Care and Cleaning instructions on page 24.
19. Always operate the blender with the splash guard in place.
20. Display window area will scratch when contacted with a scouring pad or sharp object. Use a soft
cloth to wipe the control panel area clean.
21. The machine cannot be cleaned with a water jet.
22. It is recommended that for a 120 V installation, you have at least one 20 amp outlet per machine
available within 6 ft. / 1,8 m of the Vitamix. 220 V and 100 V units require a dedicated line.
Consult electrician for proper electrical needs.
23. Turn power o and unplug the machine before touching moveable parts.
Shut o power switch at night or whenever machine will be left unattended.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAFE USE
• The Vitamix blender’s U.S.A. power cord comes equipped with a three-prong (grounding)
plug which mates with a standard three-prong wall outlet (Figure A).
This cord will vary for countries outside of the United States of America.
• Adapters (Figure B) are available for two-prong outlets. Do not cut or remove third (ground)
prong from the plug or power cord.
• Consult your electrician if you are not sure if the wall outlet is grounded through the building
wiring. With a properly grounded two-prong wall outlet, ground the machine by attaching
the tab on the adapter to the wall outlet cover by means of the screw in the center of the
cover (Figure B).

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions for Using the Pre-Set Program Buttons
The following are the basic settings of the six Pre-Set buttons for the PBS. Buttons 1 through
4 are for multiple batches of a standard 12 oz. drink. Buttons A and B are for 16 oz. specialty
drinks. Depending on the viscosity of the drink you are creating, selecting one of the Pre-Set
programs will run the machine for a full cycle. The machine will shave enough ice for the drink,
blend and stop itself when the cycle is completed. A cycle varies in ice shave time along with
blending speed and blend time. Your machine’s Pre-Set options may dier due to program
revisions or if your PBS was programmed specifically for your business.
BUTTON 1: Shaves enough ice for one 12 oz. (355 ml) drink when using 5 oz. (145 ml)
of liquid cocktail mixes, alcohol, purées, or coee liqueurs only.
BUTTON 2: Shaves enough ice for two 12 oz. (355 ml) drinks when using 10 oz. (295 ml)
of liquid cocktail mixes, alcohol, purées, or coee liqueurs only.
BUTTON 3: Shaves enough ice for three 12 oz. (355 ml) drinks when using
15 oz. (445 ml) of liquid cocktail mixes, alcohol, purées, or coee liqueurs only.
BUTTON 4: Shaves enough ice for four 12 oz. (355 ml) drinks when using
20 oz. (560 ml) of liquid cocktail mixes, purées, alcohol, or coee liqueurs only.
BUTTON A: Shaves enough ice for one 12 oz. (355 ml) drink, when using 6-7 oz. (207 ml)
of thick mixtures including hard ice cream and/or fresh fruit.
BUTTON B: Shaves enough ice for one 12 oz. (355 ml) drink, when using 6-7 oz. (207 ml)
of hard to mix ingredients including frozen fruit and juice.

Blending Tips
1. Place liquids and soft foods in the container first, solid items and ice last.
Although not necessary for processing, you may want to cut or break food
into smaller pieces for more precise measuring of ingredients.
2. As a general rule, compared to other blenders, you do not need as much
ice to make an equally frozen drink in the PBS. If your recipe freezes up,
try reducing the amount of ice.
3. Inspect the drive socket and rubber centering pad for any foreign material
including food or water residue as this can affect ice dispensing accuracy.
Be sure to clean any foreign material from the drive socket or centering pad
before placing the container.
4. Set the container on the motor base by aligning it over the rubber centering
pad.
(Motor must be completely stopped before positioning the container.)
Containers are not to be used for hard, dry materials. Avoid running your
machine with the container empty.
5. Plug the machine into the nearest outlet (if unplugged). Press the On/Off
switch to On. Select desired programmed setting by pressing any of the
Pre-Set buttons 1 through 4 or A and B. The machine will immediately begin
to cycle through the selected program, shutting off when the program is
complete.
Note: Each button has a dierent pre-selected combination of shave
time, blending speed and time.
6. Once one of the Pre-Set program buttons is pushed, the machine will start
and stop automatically. By pressing another Pre-Set button, the machine will
stop the blending cycle.
7. When the cycle is complete, the blender stops. Wait until the blades come to
a complete stop before removing the container from the motor base.
8. Remove the container, pour, garnish and serve the drink.
9. Press the On/Off power switch when not in use.

Maintenance Tips
• Never bang the container against a surface to loosen the ingredients. Remove the
container from the base and use a rubber spatula to remove thick mixtures from the
bottom of your container.
• Never shake or rattle a container while in use.
• Never remove the container before the machine has come to a complete stop.
• Never start the motor before the container is in place.

• If you detect a change in the sound of the machine or if a hard or foreign
object comes into contact with the container blade or shaver blade, do not
serve the drink. Inspect your blades for loose, nicked or missing parts. If parts
are loose, missing or nicked, replace with new blade assembly.

•Check your blades daily for loose, nicked or missing parts. If you find something is
loose, nicked or missing, replace the blade assembly before use. See page 21. Do not
tighten hex-headed screw (on top of container blade assembly). If loose, replace blade
assembly immediately.

•The PBS measures the amount of ice shaved by weighing the container. For your PBS to
dispense the correct amount of ice, do not rest your hand or any object against or on the
container during the blending or shaving cycle.
•On all units the built-in thermal protector keeps track of how hot the motor gets and will
warn the user and eventually shut down the motor if the motor is overheating. When
overheated, the display will instruct the user to remove the container and run the machine
until cool. This takes about two minutes, See page 27, Cooling the Motor for complete
instructions. When the thermal protector shuts the motor o, review your processing
techniques and your instructions. Your recipes may be too thick or have too much material
in them. Consider adding more liquid and consult Vitamix Customer Service or your local
Vitamix Distributor for further assistance.
• The PBS measures the amount of ice shaved by weighing the container. For your PBS to
dispense the correct amount of ice, do not rest you hand or any object against or on the
container during the blending or shaving cycle.

CONTROL PANEL
On/O Power Switch: Located on the back of the machine the On/O switch controls the
power to the PBS. With the machine plugged in, switch the machine to On to ready the
machine for shaving ice and blending.
Start/Stop Button: Pressing Start( )/Stop ( ) once starts and runs only the blender
on the PBS. While the blender is running you may add ice by pressing and holding the
Shave Only ( ) button. Release the Shave Only button to stop adding ice. Press the
Start/Stop button again to stop the blender and the container blades.
Speed Buttons: Press the button to gradually increase the speed of the blender blades
in increments of 1%, up to 100%. Press the button to gradually decrease the speed of
the blender blades in increments of 1%, down to 7%. Blender Speed Control is used to set
the blending speed of the Blend Only ( ) button and the Start/Stop button.
Pre-Set Program Buttons: These buttons, numbered 1 through 4 are pre-programmed
blending cycles designed for your most commonly made drinks. These four buttons
would commonly be programmed to produce from one to four 12 oz. (355 ml) drinks.
Button 1 builds one 12 oz. (355 ml) drink, button 2 builds two 12 oz. (355 ml) drinks, etc.
Pressing one of the four Pre-Set Program buttons will run the machine for a full cycle.
The machine will stop itself when the cycle is complete. A cycle varies in ice weight and
in speed and length of blending. See instructions on page 6 for a complete description of
the range of each Pre-Set button. See page 12 for information on custom programming
these four buttons.

Pre-Set Specialty Drink Buttons: These buttons, A and B, are also programmed
blending cycles designed for specialty drinks. See page 9 for instructions on using the
Pre-Set Specialty Drink buttons. See page 12 for information on custom programming
these buttons.
Shave Only Button: Allows the operator to add more ice after a shave/blend cycle or
even shave ice without the blender running. Press and hold the Shave Only ( ) button
to dispense ice. Shaved ice will be dispensed until the button is released.
Blend Only Button: Allows the operator to use the blender motor without adding any
ice. Place the container on the machine, press and hold the Blend Only ( ) button.
The blender will run until the button is released.
IMPORTANT NOTES!
Start/Stop Button: Pressing one of the Pre-Set Program buttons or the Pre-Set
Specialty Drink buttons while the motor is running will also stop the machine.
Speed Buttons: These settings will reset if the power button is shut o.
Shave Only Button: The container must be in place, for the Shave Only button
to work. Avoid overfilling the container.
Blend Only Button: While holding down the Blend Only button, use the
Blender Speed Control buttons to adjust the motor speeds.

Display Window: This area, depending on what button is pressed, displays a variety of
operation messages. A “Ready” message appears when there is power to the machine.
Owner Controls: The owners control panel is accessible by pressing the Vitamix logo.
•PresstheVitamixLogooncetorevealthemodemessage.
Press button 1 then B within five seconds to continue.
•Oncethecorrectbuttonsequenceisenteredthedisplaywill
indicate the blender motor temperature (NORM, WARM, HOT),
a usage count and a total. The “COUNT” is a machine usage
total and can be reset. This can be used to keep a count of the
number of times the machine has been used in a week, day or
even an hour. The TOTAL keeps track of the machine usage,
including production and testing and cannot be cleared.
•AfterpressingtheVitamixlogoand1B,presstheVitamixlogo
again to reveal the name of the program controlling the
Pre-Set buttons. If you are using the factory settings this will
read VITA-MIX PBS PROGRAM #X.
(X stands for the number of program.)
• Press the Vitamix Logo a third time for programming and adjusting the six Pre-Set
buttons shaver settings and blending times. See page 12 for instructions.
• Press the Vitamix Logo a fourth time to reveal an option to reset the Pre-Set buttons
to the original factor settings. See page 14 for instructions.
• Press the Vitamix logo a fifth time to continue blending.

Custom Programming
The Portion Blending System is optimized for the Advance container. The program can
be customized by using the control panel, a programming chip or software kit available
from Vitamix. Contact your distributor or customer service for more information.
Programming Pre-Set Buttons
This process will allow you to reprogram any one of the Pre-Set buttons with dierent
blending times and amounts of ice being shaved into the container.
1. When the Display Panel reads “READY”, press the Owners Controls (Vitamix Logo)
button once to reveal “MODE”.
2. Press button 1 then B.
3. Press the Vitamix Logo button three more times until the display panel reads “TO
MODIFY ENTER 1 THRU B”.
4. Press the button (1-4 or A, B) you wish to adjust.
5. The display will read either TIME: ___ or ICE + ___. To toggle between the two
displays press the ( ) SHAVE ONLY button.
6. To change the time or increments of ice, press the SELECT to increase the amount
of ice or SELECT to decrease the amount of ice.
7. When the desired time or ice changes have been made press the
START( )/STOP( ) button, display will read “SAVED”. At this point you can either
press another program button (1-4 or A, B) and alter its shaving and blend time
using the instructions above, or press the Vitamix logo button to return to blending.
For Example: If you wanted to change the blend time and amount of ice
being shaved for button 1.
1. When the Display Panel reads “READY”, press the Owners
Controls (Vitamix Logo) button once to reveal “MODE.
2. Press buttons 1 then B, then press the Vitamix Logo button
three more times until the display panel reads
“TO MODIFY ENTER 1 THRU B”.
3. Press button 1 to modify the program on this button
“1 DRINK TIME: 30” Appears on the display indicating that
the amount of time the blender will run after the proper
weight of shaved ice is achieved. To increase the time to
40 seconds press the button until “TIME: 40” appears
on the display. If you go too far, press and hold the
button to decrease the amount of time.

4. To change over to the amount of ice shaved press the ( ) SHAVE ONLY button and
1 DRINK ICE+01 will be displayed.
Note: Use the ( ) SHAVE ONLY button to toggle
between blend time and ice shave
5. With the display reading “ICE+01” press the button to increase the amount of ice
to an increment of +05 and release the button.
Note: The range of adjustment
will vary from button to button.
6. After the desired changes have been made press the START( )/STOP( ) button
to save the changes, then press the Vitamix Logo button to return to blending and
test the adjustments made on Button 1.
Suggestions for changing the blending time for buttons that are used for multiple
batches of the same drink.
In the example above, 10 seconds of blending time was added to button 1. If you would
like to change the consistency of buttons 2, 3 and 4 to match the consistency of
button 1, add the same amount of time (10 seconds) plus an additional 5 seconds for
each button; button 1 – 40 seconds, button 2 – 55 seconds, button 3 – 70 seconds,
button 4 – 85 seconds.
Suggestions for changing the amount of ice that is shaved for buttons that are used for
multiple batches of the same drink.
For buttons 2, 3, and 4 you will need to double, triple and quadruple the increments of
change. In the example above since you added 4 increments of ice to button 1, you will
need to add 8 increments to button 2, 12 increments to button 3 and 16 increments to
button 4.
Note: These guidelines are approximate. Experiment to determine the best
blending time and quantity of ice for your particular recipe.

• Reverting your PRE-SET PROGRAM buttons to the original factory setting will
erase any programming that was installed with a custom program chip.
Programming Your PBS with a Custom Chip
1. Turn the PBS sideways so that the control panel faces to
your right.
2. Slide the PBS to the edge of a counter to reveal the port
underneath the machine located below the control panel.
3. Insert the custom programmed chip with the words, “This
side facing to the front of the machine” toward you, into
the port located at the bottom of the machine.
The display window will read “NEW MODULE”.
4. Within 10 seconds the six PRE-SET buttons will be
reprogrammed and the display window will read “SAVED”
then “READY”. If nothing happens when the programming
chip is fully inserted, turn the chip in the opposite
direction and try again. If nothing still happens, follow the
instructions listed under Resetting the Pre-Set buttons
to the original factory settings then follow steps 3-6
again with the programming chip. Be sure to remove the
programming chip and return it to the original package
when finished.
5. Press one of the PRE-SET buttons to reveal in the display
window the name of the program/drink.
Resetting the Pre-Set Buttons to the Original
Factory Settings
1. Access the Owners Controls (press the Vitamix Logo) and press the Pre-Set button
1 and B when the display window says “MODE”.
2. Press the Vitamix logo two more times to reveal the instructions on resetting the
Pre-Set buttons.
3. Press and hold the button 4 until the Display Window reads “RESTORING PLEASE
WAIT”: The Pre-Set buttons are now reset to the original factory settings.

Installing the Splash Guard and Ice Chute
1. The splash guard attaches to the ice chute and is used to loosely cover the
container during operation. Slide the ice chute through the splash guard.
The splash guard should not touch the container. Figure 1.
2. Slide the ice chute and splash guard over the blade cartridge located on the
underside of the ice bin. Figure 2.
3. The ice chute and blade cartridge will click and lock together indicating
proper alignment. Figure 3.

Installing the Feet
1. Carefully turn the machine on its side to expose the bottom base of the machine.
2. Screw the (4) adjustable feet into the bottom base of the machine.
3. Turn the machine back upright.
4. With the ice bin lid removed, place a level on top of the ice bin and begin to adjust
the height of the feet by turning the bottom portion of the feet.

Installing the Drain Hose Kit
The drain hose kit contains one 6-foot drain line and hose connector, three 90 degree
elbows, six hose clamps and four 4-inch hose sections. When routing to a sink, bucket, or
similar receptacle, use the drain hose kit to eliminate possible kinking of the drain hose.
Kinking can be caused by a sharp bend created by the edge of a counter.
1. Position the machine where it will sit on the counter.
2. Once the machine is positioned, connect the hose
connector to the drain receptacle and run the drain hose
from under the machine to a proper drain receptacle. Figure 1.
3. Cut the hose at the point it reaches the end of the counter
and be sure to keep the remaining length of hose.
4. Place one clamp over the end of the hose coming from
the machine.
5. Push one end of the 90 degree elbow into the end of the
hose coming from the machine. The elbow should rest over
the edge of the counter.
6. Slide the hose clamp over the end of the elbow and
tighten with a screwdriver.
7. Place another hose clamp over one end of the remaining
length of hose.
8. Slide the end of the remaining length of hose over the
other end of the 90 degree elbow.
9. Slide the hose clamp over the end of the elbow and
tighten with a screwdriver.
10. Place the open end of the hose into a proper drain receptacle.
IMPORTANT NOTES!
• If the position of the machine on the counter changes, it may be necessary
to replace the drain hose to avoid kinks. Readily available, standard 0.5 in.
(13 mm) plastic pipe and fittings may be used for more complex installations.

Cleaning the Components
After removing the contents in the ice bin, an initial cleaning and sanitizing will be
necessary before adding ice. Make sure the drain hose is connected and there is power
to the machine before cleaning the ice bin.
1. Follow steps 1-5 on page 23 Care and Cleaning the Container.
2. Follow steps 2-11 on page 24 Care and Cleaning Ice Bin.
3. Once dry replace ice bin liner, ice chute, splash guard and container.
Shaver Blade Removal and Installation
The PBS shaving blade is two blades in one. The blade has two shaving edges so that a
fresh edge can be exposed by simply rotating the blade 180 degrees. Your machine was
shipped from the factory with a double edged blade installed. The following instructions
can be used to either rotate the blade to expose a fresh edge, or to install a new blade.
1. Unplug the PBS and remove the ice bin lid, any remaining ice
(see page 23 for ice removal instructions) and the ice bin liner.
2. Visually locate the position of the shaver blade. Grasp the shaver wheel so as to
avoid the blade. Hold the shaver wheel stationary while you rotate and remove the
paddle nut counterclockwise.
3. With the paddle nut removed, lift the shaver wheel o of its mounting shaft.
Note: If the shaver wheel sticks and is dicult to remove, tap the end of the
mounting shaft slightly with a hammer to loosen.
4. With the shaver wheel removed, locate the two screws holding the shaver blade,
remove the screws and set aside.
5. If the second edge has not been used, simply remove the blade and rotate the
blade 180 degrees and replace.
DO NOT TURN THE BLADE OVER .
6. If a new blade is being installed, discard the old blade and shim and replace with a
new blade and shim.
Note: Blades and shims must be installed together as a pair to
ensure proper PBS operation. When replacing a blade always discard the old blade
and shim and install only all new parts.
7. Securely tighten the two screws. The screws should be flush with the surface of the
blade. If the screws are not flush, check that the blade is right side up.
8. Reinstall the shaver wheel onto the mounting shaft.
9. Replace the paddle nut holding the shaver wheel stationary and turning the paddle
nut clockwise until snug. Be careful not to come into contact with the shaver blade.
10. Replace the ice bin liner and ice bin lid.

11. Installing the Ice Bin Liner and Ice Bin Lid
1. The ice bin liner rests inside the ice bin and helps separate and distribute the
ice cubes for shaving. The ice bin liner may have shifted during shipping and
unpacking and should rest level inside the ice bin.
2. To remove the ice bin liner, simply grasp the liners by the side and lift out of
the ice bin.
3. To re-install the ice bin liner, make sure to align the interlock geometry on the ice
bin liner and ice bin, and gently lower the ice bin liner into place.
Filling the Machine with Ice
1. With the ice bin lid removed and the ice bin liner in place you can fill up to
5 gallons (19 liters) of cubed ice. Using ice from an ice-making machine works
best in the PBS.
2.
Do not use ice blocks.
3. Avoid using bagged ice that has been stored in a freezer at extremely low
temperatures. Use of this type of ice may result in freeze-up of the shaver.
When you must use bagged ice, it should be stored in an ice chest for at least
an hour before use.

Installing the Ice Bin Lid
Each time ice is added to the ice bin or when the ice bin is cleaned the lid must be
replaced properly or the machine will not shave ice. A safety interlock switch is
located on the ice bin and is deactivated when the lid is placed in its correct position
on top of the bin.
1. Line the marks on the front of the lid with the marks
on the ice bin.
2. With both hands press down on the two sides of the lid.
3. Check to make sure the back of the lid is flush with the
lip of the ice bin.
Container Pad
Make sure the container pad is positioned correctly by firmly pressing down on all four
sides. Do not remove the container pad unless it is damaged. See page 25 for cleaning
around the container pad.
Placing the Container on the Container Pad
1. Lift the splash guard and position the container on the
container pad.
