Warning: To avoid electric shock, use the SVT-type power cord in the
United States and HAR-type (or better) in Europe. The main power cord
must only be replaced with one of adequate rating. For information

from the 30-cm single-zone column manager. The components they cover
are not user-serviceable.

Audience and purpose
This guide is intended for use by individuals who install, operate, and
maintain the ACQUITY®30-cm Single-Zone Column Manager (CM-30S). It
gives an overview of the technology and operation of the CM-30S.
Intended use of the 30-cm single-zone column manager
Waters designed the 30-cm, single zone column manager for use in Advanced
Polymer Chromatography™(APC™) and Ultraperformance Convergence
Chromatography™(UPC2®) applications. The CM-30S is not intended for use
in diagnostic applications.
Calibrating
To calibrate LC systems, follow acceptable calibration methods using at least
five standards to generate a standard curve. The concentration range for
standards must include the entire range of QC samples, typical specimens,
and atypical specimens.
Quality control
Routinely run three QC samples that represent subnormal, normal, and
above-normal levels of a compound. If sample trays are the same or very
similar, vary the location of the QC samples in the trays. Ensure that QC
sample results fall within an acceptable range, and evaluate precision from
day to day and run to run. Data collected when QC samples are out of range
might not be valid. Do not report these data until you are certain that the
instrument performs satisfactorily.

Variations in column temperature can shift peak retention times,
altering peak shapes and increasing the difficulty of achieving precise
results. The 30-cm single-zone column manager (CM-30S) helps ensure
precise, reproducible separations by controlling the column
temperature.
Description
The CM-30S controls the temperature of columns mounted in a single,
temperature-controlled compartment, or zone. By means of passive
preheaters, it heats the incoming solvent and column compartment to a
specified temperature, in increments of 0.1 °C. The CM-30S can maintain
column compartment temperatures extending from 5 °C above ambient to
90 °C.
When configured as part of an UltraPerformance Convergence
Chromatography™ (UPC2®) system, the CM-30S provides automated,
programmable switching between columns, facilitating method development.
You can also include the CM-30S in an Advanced Polymer Chromatography™
(APC™) system. Doing so gives the system the flexibility to use GPC columns,
which can be necessary for supporting legacy methods. When the CM-30S
operates as part of an APC system, switching valves in the primary column
manager, the ACQUITY Single-Zone Column Manager (CM-S), perform
automated column-bank switching.

ACQUITY UPC2and GPC columns are equipped with eCord Information
Management Technology, which captures the history of each column, to assist
in tracking column usage. Reusable high-pressure fittings facilitate the
replacement of the columns.
The CM-30S can accommodate as many as eight, 30-cm columns with inside
diameters of 2.1 mm to 8.0 mm.
Optional receptacles on the CM-30S’s front panel receive the column eCord™
fobs, which store column manufacturing and usage data. The eCord column
fob stores column manufacturing and usage data, which you can access from
the instrument console.

allow access to the column plate.

Leak sensor When enabled, continuously monitors the CM-30S for
leaks and stops the system flow when its optical sensor
detects approximately 1.5 mL of accumulated, leaked
liquid in its surrounding reservoir.
Outlet valve In UPC2systems, allows for programmable switching
access to any column installed in the CM-30S as well as
to the column bypass mode and waste.
Note: When configured as part of an APC system, the
CM-30S does not have an outlet valve.
Valve drip tray Captures any leakage from the valve connections and
routes it into the leak management system.
