When operatingtheUV-Hunit,basicprecautionsshouldalwaysbefollowedtoreducetheriskoffire,
electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following:
1. Read all the instructions before installing or operating the system.
2. Pay attentionto all warning and cautionstatements,andalso safetysymbolsthroughout these
instructions. Failure to do so may result in personal injury and/or damage to equipment.
3. Thisunitisnotintendedfor usebypersons(includingchildren)withreducedphysical,sensoryor
mentalcapabilities,orlackofexperienceandknowledge,unlesstheyhavebeengivensupervision
or instruction concerning use of the unit by a person responsible for their safety.
4. Do not contact moving parts.
5. Only use attachments or spare parts recommended or sold by Lync by Watts.
6. The unit is intended only for indoor use in a dry location.
7. Do not unplug the unit by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord.
8. Unplug the unit from the outlet when not in use and before any servicing or cleaning.
9. The UV chamber contains an interlock to disable the UV lamps if the event the chamber is
accessedwhenthepowerison.Donotdefeatitspurposeorattempttoservice withoutopening
the panel completely.
10. Do not operate the unit with a damaged cord or plug, or after a significant malfunction or is
droppedordamagedinanymanner.Returntheunittothenearest authorized servicefacilityfor
examination,repair,orelectricalormechanicaladjustment.Ifthesupplycordisdamaged,itmust
be replaced by a special cord available from Lync.
11. Connecttheunitonlytoacircuitthatisprotectedbyaground-faultcircuit-interrupter(GFCI).See
Grounding Instructions.
12. If an extension cordis necessary, the cord shouldcontain a groundand beratedforthesame
amperage as the unit or combined units.
13. Do not plug in the unit if water is present on the unit or if any nearby piping connections are
leaking.
14. Servicetotheunitdoesnotrequiretheremovalofthealuminumendplatesandtheymustremain
assembled.
15. In the event of an alarm or shut down of the UV unit and water continues to flow either
accidentallyorforemergencypurposes,oriftheUVsystemisbypassed,itisrecommendedthat
any water used for drinking be boiled.
16. Do not operate the unit dry.
17. Do not operate this unit at altitudes over 3000m.
18. Iftheunitisinstalledinaroomstoringchemicalsorisexposedtounnaturalsubstancessuchas
hydrogen sulfide, the room must be ventilated.

1.1Grounding Instructions
ThisUVunitmustbegrounded.Intheeventofamalfunctionorbreakdown,groundingwillreducethe
risk of electric shockby providing a pathof leastresistance for electriccurrent. Thisunitisequipped
withacordhaving anappliance-groundingconductorandagroundingplug.Theplugmustbeplugged
into an appropriate outlet that is installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and
ordinances.ThepipingconnectedtotheUVunitmustalsobeproperlygrounded.Installagroundinglug
or strap as required.
WARNING! For correct operation it is essential to observe the manufacturer’s instructions.
WARNING!Improperconnectionoftheequipment-groundingconductorcanresultinariskofelectricshock.
Checkwithaqualifiedelectricianorservicerepresentativeifyouareindoubtwhethertheunitisproperly
grounded.Donotmodifytheplug providedwiththisunit;ifitwillnotfittheoutlet,havea properoutlet
installed by a qualified technician.
WARNING! If connected to a potable water system, the system must be protected against backflow.
1.2Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter

protectedbyaground-faultcircuit-interrupter(GFCI).LyncbyWatts recommendstheuseofHubbell
GFCIs for 120Vac.
1.3Safety Symbols
WARNING: Potential Shock Hazard - Shutdown and unplug the unit before servicing.
DANGER:UltravioletRadiation-Disconnectpowerbeforereplacinglamps.Thelampsintheunit
emit ultraviolet (UV) light that can damage the skin & eyes. Never look at the lamp when it is
operating. Do not plug the unit in unless it is properly installed and all the panels are closed and
secured. Donotopenapanelorperformanyserviceunlesstheunithasbeenunplugged. Neverlook
intotheunitorplaceanyexposedskinintotheilluminatedareaswhenitisoperating.Donotoperatea
unitthathasbeendamagedormissinganycomponentsorsafetydevices.Ifapartismissingfromyour
unit, contact your dealer.
CAUTION: Safety Alert - Pay attention to the instructions.
CAUTION:UVLampsContainMercury-UVlampsarefragileandmustbehandledwithcare.
If breakageoccurs, avoidinhalation oringestionofdebrisandavoid exposuretoskin and
eyes. Do not usea vacuum cleaner or broom for cleanup. Follow local guidelines andregulationsto
remove and dispose of old UV lamps or mercury debris.
CAUTION:Wear appropriatesafetyequipment -Wearsafetyglasseswhenperforming
maintenance on the unit. For non-potable applications, do not handle wetted parts with
bare hands - use latex or vinyl gloves or equivalent.
CAUTION:QuartzsleevesarefragileThequartzsleevecanbreakorchipifmishandled.Always
handle withcare and keep it ina safeplaceifremovedfrom unit.Donot strikethequartzsleeve
with any tool, since even the smallest chip can cause it to break under pressure.

RevolutionaryCrossfireTechnologyisself-cleaning,self-monitoring,andfail-safe.TheUV-HsystemwithCrossfire
Technology is designed to eliminate the potential risks associated with conventionalsinglelampUVsystems.
Committedtoexceeding UVdisinfectionstandards,LyncUV-Hhasturnedconventionaltechnologyinside-outby
flowing the water inside the quartz sleeve and includingtwo lampsmounted inair,dualor quad smart sensors,
software-designed reflectors and an optional fail-safe solenoid valve.
CrossfireTechnologydeliversahighUVdosefordisinfection:CrossfireTechnologyincorporatestwoproprietary
high-output UV lamps with software-designed reflectors that provide radiation from 360°. Amalgam UV lamp
technology has been introduced into the largest units to not only provide higher UV output,but alsoincreased
stabilityoverawiderrangeofoperatingtemperatures.Inaddition,theamalgamlampscanbecycledmoreoften
than conventional low pressure high output (LPHO) UV lamps.
CrossfireTechnologyiscapableoftreatinglowUVTwater: TheUltravioletTransmittance(UVT)ofwaterimpacts
the amount of treatment since UV light is absorbed rather than being available for disinfection. With a shorter
path length for the UV light totravel, CrossfireTechnologyoutperforms conventionalUV systemsandcan treat
potable applications as low as 50% UVT and also reuse and waste water in low UVT applications.
CrossfireTechnologyisengineeredtoberisk-freeandfail-safe:CrossfireTechnologyusesdualorquadsmartUV
sensors mounted in air, which are designed to not foulandaremorereliableindicatorsofsystemperformance
thanordinarysystems.Thefan-cooledlampsmaintainconsistentUVoutputformaximumdelivery.Computerized
alarms andoptionalautoshutofffail-safevalvearedesignedsothatonlytreatedwaterwillpassthroughtheunit.
CrossfireTechnologyisself-cleaning:CrossfireTechnologyusesastainlesssteelwipertocleantheinsideofthe
quartzsleeveeliminatingfoulingandtheneedforawatersoftenermakingabrasivequartzsleevecleaningathing
ofthepast–savingmoneyandtheenvironment.Thewiperisautomatedtocyclefor5minutesevery4hours.The
cycle begins 5 minutes after power is applied. Self-cleaning not available on the NC models.
Crossfire Technologyis virtually maintenance-free:Crossfiretechnology utilizestwolampsmountedinair,
outside the quartz sleeve so maintaining a Lync UV-H unit is as easy as changing a light bulb with no system
drainingrequired.TheUVlampsrequirereplacementafter12or16monthsofoperationdependingonthelamp
type and notification of lamp replacement is given via a warning one month in advance.
CrossfireTechnologyiseasytoinstall:Providedwitheither1”or2”maleNPTconnections.Optionalstainlesssteel
flexiblehoseswithFemaleIronPipe(FIP)connectionsareavailableforpurchaseforquickandsimpleinstallation.
TheUV-Hhas a smartdisplay:Theoperatorinterfaceisacolortouchscreendesignedtoallowunprecedented
accesstoinformationsuchaslamplifetime,real-timemessagehistoryandUVdosedisplay.Areal-timeclockis
now available for improved troubleshooting and fault resolution.
TheUV-Hhasabuilt-inpurgevalve:Thepurgevalveeliminatestheneedtoshutdowntheunitintheeventofno
water flow for hours, or even days (as long as a pressurized water supply is present). It isdesigned to prevent
buildup of metals and minerals on internalcomponents. Thepurgevalvealsoeliminates nuisance alarmsfrom
changing water transmittance conditions. The purge valve is not available on some models.
TheUV-Hhasremotestatusindication:Theunitscomestandardwithwarningandruncontactstoremotelysignal
a control panel. In addition, the units can be started & stopped via external device.
TheUV-Hhasabuilt-insurgeprotection:Thepowerdistributioncircuitboardcontainsfiltersandsurgeprotection
devices to increase the reliability of the on-board electronics and ballasts for the UV lamp.
TheUV-Hoffersnewinterfaces:TheUV-Hunitsareavailablewithapairof4-20mAoutputsforUVIntensity,Net
UV Transmittance, or UV Dose through an optionaladd-ondevice.Modbus,a smart electroniccommunication
protocol, will also be available when the 4-20mA option is purchased.
The UV-Hoffers datalogging:TheUV-Hunitsareavailable withanoptionalUSBdrivetocontinuouslyrecord
performance on a daily basis.

4.1Before Beginning Installation
4.1.1 Water Conditions - Pre-treatment Parameters
NotethissectionisdesignedtoensuretheoptimalperformanceofyourUV-Hsystem.Pleasereviewthe
followingpre-treatmentparameterspriortoinstallation.Ifanyspecificationsareofconcernorunclear
please contact your water treatment dealer or specialist. Note some of the information below is
technical in nature and you may want to contact your water treatment specialist to review the
parameters.
IMPORTANT:Shouldanyofthefollowingwaterparametersexceedtherecommendedlimitsthe
system will not be serviceable under warranty.
DONOTINSTALLTHEUNITuntilyouhaveconfirmedtheunit’scapabilitiesmatchestheapplication–see
Product Specifications Tables.
Water Parameters for Treating Potable Water:
•UVTransmittance(UVT)–seeProductSpecificationTables.Itisrecommendedforthewaterto
betestedforUVtransmittanceinanyapplicationsusingcisterns,surfacewaterorgroundwater
under the influence of surface water.
•Total Dissolved solids (TDS) - must be less than or equal to 1000 mg/L (mg/L=ppm)
•Levelofturbidity-orcloudiness-oflessthanorequalto1NTU(nephelometricturbidityunit).
In a point of entry application, a 5 micron sediment filter is recommended before the unit to
reduce turbidity (the presence of a filter will also simplify disinfection of plumbing –see
DisinfectingthePlumbingsection).Forsurfacewaters,adualgradientpre-filter(75x25or50x5)
is recommended.
Water Parameters for Treating Waste & Reuse Water:
•UV Transmittance (UVT) –The minimum UVT level is 50% or as indicated in the proposal
document.
•TotalSuspendedSolids(TSS)-TheamountofsuspendedsolidsaffecttreatmentbyblockingUV
light. The maximum TSS level is 20 mg/L or as indicated in the proposal document.

Thesefittings,pipeinsulation,andanypipingcompatiblewiththeplumbingshouldbeonhand before
youbegininstallation.SeeFigure4.2andmakealistofallnecessarycomponentsincludingsolder,paste
andthreadsealant.Bypasspipingandvalvesthatisolatetheunitareoptional,(butrecommended)asis

4.1.5 Location
WARNING!Theunitmust bepositioned verticallyon asolidwall(theperformanceofthesystemwillbe
adversely affected if mounted horizontally or is subjected to vibrations). Installationshouldbedone in
compliance with all applicable federal, state/provincial, and local regulations. For units in Australia & New
Zealand,installationtobeinaccordancewiththePlumbingCodeofAustralia(PCA).Werecommendthattheunit
beinstalledbyaqualifiedservicetechnician.Failuretoinstallthesystemproperlymayresultinpropertydamage
(leaks/flooding) or personal injury (electrical shock) and will void warranty.
In a potable water application, the Lync UV-H unit should be installeddownstreamof(after)anypre-
treatmentdevicessuchasfilters,watersoftenersetc.andalsoanypressuretanks.However,itmustbe
installed before any branches in the piping so that all the water is disinfected before splitting and
distributing throughoutthe home orfacility. Theunit must bebefore anychlorineinjection systemor
this will void warranty.
4.1.6 Time Required
PleasenotethatfullinstallationoftheUV-Hrequiresshuttingoffthemainwatersupplyforanumberof
hours.Ifdisinfectionisnecessary,allpipesmustbetreatedandflushed.Oncetheunitispluggedin,the
new UV lamps may takefrom a fewmoments to several hoursto reach fullpower dependingonthe
typeof lamps. HavingaDoseAlarmisnormalwithanewsystem(orwithnewlyinstalledlamps)until
the lamps have reached full power.

4.2 Assembling the Unit
1. Unpack the unit, being careful to remove all packaging material. Inspect the unit for damage
particularlythequartzsleeve–SeetheAccessingUVChambersection.CheckifUVlampsarefully
inserted. Write model number, serial number, & installation date on front on the Instruction
Manual.
2. TheUVunithaskeyholeslotsforconvenientmounting–useallfourmounts.Donotmounttheunit
directly to an outside wall; mount on plywood or shims –See Figure 4.1. Remove the top and
bottom covers of the unit to make themounting holes accessible. Mounting hole templates are
provided to simplify installation.
3. TheunitcanbeconnecteddirectlytothewatermainsorusingtheoptionalStainlessflexiblehoses
purchasedthroughLyncbyWatts.Useonlynewhoses;oldhosesshouldbediscarded.Ifhosesare
being used, connect them now toboth the topand bottomof the unit.Makesurethatthesealing
washer is inside thehose end before makingthe connection.Hold thestainless manifold witha
wrench then tighten the hose securely.
4.3 Connecting the Pipes
WARNING!Watermustflowintotheinletatthebottomoftheunit.Theoutletislocatedatthetopofthe
unit.For1”systems,holdthestainlessmanifoldswithawrenchwhentighteningmatingconnections.For2”
systems,thepumpflangeshouldberemovedandthreadedintomatingconnectionthenreconnectedtoUV
unit. Do not damage sealing surfaces.
CAUTION: Always shut off water supply and relieve water pressure before beginning any plumbing
modifications.

2. Theoptionalsolenoidvalveensuresthat shouldthesystemfail,duetopowerloss,lowUVTorlow
UVlampoutput,thesystemwillfailinsafemodeandshutdownthewaterflow.Itisrecommended
toinstallthesolenoidvalvejustaftertheUVunitprovidedthataflooddetectiondeviceexistsatthe
site–thisallowstheunittopurgeduringalarmsituations. Ifaflooddetectiondeviceisnotpresent,
install the solenoid valve ahead of the UV unit.Thedirectionofflowthrough thesolenoid valve is
important –verifyflowdirectionwithlabelonthevalve.Waterwillnotflowbackwardsthroughthe
valve. Keepthe coil of the valve pointingupward(topreventwaterfromdripping onit).The valve
requires minimum 55kPa (8psig) to fully open.
The optional solenoid valve is normally closed and must be powered to open.
Someofthesolenoidvalvesofferedhaveamanualoverride(whitelever)thatcanbeusedtoforce
thevalveopen.Inanyregulated sitessuchasmunicipalapplications,themanualoverrideshould
not be used. For normal operation, always leave valve in automatic position. In the Advanced
Settingsmenu,item 2.7.3,togglethevalvetobe“Installed”andamonthlyreminderwillappearto
test valve. Please test valve monthly.
3. Connectthepurgevalvetoadrainusingthetubingprovided–seeFigure4.3.Notethatanairgapis
typicallyrequiredbetween tubinganddrain-followlocalplumbingregulations.Thetubingcanbe
placeddownthebacksideoftheunit. Thetubingshouldbesecuredtothewallorfloortopreventit
frommovingduringthepurgingcycle.Duringstartupoftheunit,itisstronglyrecommendedto
testthepurgevalvetoconfirmconnectionsarefreeofleaksandthewaterdischargestodrain.
CAUTION!Donotallowtheinsideoftheunittogetwet.Beforeopeningthewatersupply,doublecheckall
connectionsandtaps.Slowlyturnonthewatersupply,ventouttrappedairandcheckforleaks.Ifleaksexist,
investigate the cause and repair before plugging in the unit.

4. Once the system is checked for leaks under full pressure, install pipe insulation to any
overhead piping to prevent condensation from falling onto or into the unit.
IMPORTANT: Aftertheunithasbeenoperatingforafewhours,checkallconnectionsforleaks
(specifically at flexible hoses if purchased). Repeat this procedure periodically.

4.4 Parallel Installation
When more thanone unitis installed in parallel (flow split between units),the unitsmust beinstalled
withmanualshutoffvalvesbothupstreamanddownstreamofeachunittoallowoneunittobeserviced
without interrupting the flow to the others. Another requirement is the installation of a check valve
downstream of the UV unit (after the UV unit). This will prevent the backflow of water to a unit.
4.5 Control Interfaces
WARNING: Shutdown and unplug the unit before installing any external wiring.
Externalwiringcanbeintroducedthroughaportintheleftsideoftheunit–seeFigure4.4.Bydefault,a
plug is installed into thisport in a standard unit and a strain relief (Kit # GD21) can be purchased if
connectiontoremotedevicesisrequired.ForExternalContactsandRemoteStart/Stop,20gaugewireis
recommended and if the4-20mA optionis used, 20 gauge wire withfoil and drain wire.Installwires
onto spring cage terminals provided.
4.6 External Contacts
AllUV-Hsystemsprovidetwo“dry”contactsforremotealarmsorauto-dialers–theword“dry”indicates
no voltage present at thecontact. Thefirst contact labeled RUN is a“SystemRun”condition–when
closed, the unit is treating; if the contact is open, the unit isin alarm, has lostpower, or perhapsthe
wirehasbeencut.Thesecond contactlabeledWARNINGistoindicatetheexistenceofanabnormal
conditionsuchashighwatertemperature.Whenthiscontactisopen,thesystemisnormal;whenthis
contactisclosed, awarningconditionexists.Bothcontactsaremeantforcontrolpurposesonly,notto
drive devices. The maximum rating of the contact is 24 Vac or Vdc, 2A.
4.7 Remote Start/Stop
AllUV-Hsystemshaveremotestart/stopcapabilitywhichallowsthemtoremainidlewithoutoperating
theUVlamps.Whenasignalisgiven(voltageapplied),UVlampsareenergized.Thisisconvenientfor
locationsrequiringperiodicdisinfectionsuchaspumphouses.Thevoltageratingrangeofthecontactis
5-24 Vdc or Vac, 0.5W max. The remote start/stopis disabled by default andcan be enabled in the
Advanced Settings menu.
Caution:Avoidcontinuouslystartingandstoppingtheunitwithina24hrperiod,asthiswillaccelerate
theagingoftheUVlampsandwillnotbecoveredunderwarranty.SeeProductSpecificationTablesfor
permissible lamp cycles.
4.8 4-20mA & Modbus Option
A4-20mAoptionisavailablewithtwocontinuousanalogoutputsignalsandoneinputsignal.Theoutput
signalscanbeUVDose,orUVIntensity,orUVTransmittance.Theinputsignalisflow(on1000models
only). Modbus capability will also be available when the 4-20mA option is purchased.

4.9 Data Logging on USB Option
Data logging capability isan available option on all UV-H units. A small USB drive is used to record

TheUV-HappliesadvancedCrossfireTechnologyyetissimpletooperate.Theautomaticquartzsleeve
cleaning technology available on most models has been designed to reduce, and in most cases,
eliminate the periodic shutdowns necessarytoinspectthecleanliness of thequartzsleeve. The only
required maintenance is the replacement of the two UV lamps.
The unit should be operated with both top and bottom plastic covers installed.

Theuserinterfaceconsistsofacolortouchscreenandasinglemulti-colorLED.SeeFigure5.1. TheLED
willalwaysbeilluminatedwhentheUVunitispluggedinandpoweredup.Thetouchscreenenterssleep
mode after 10 minutes and requires the user to touch it to wake it up. The touchscreen will change
colors if any significant event occurs suchas warnings or alarms.See thesectiononNavigatingthe
Menus for a complete layout of the screens.
Indicating LED
Green Light –anilluminated greenlight indicatesthe unit is treatingnormally. Aslowflashing green
light meansthe UV lamps are not yet at full poweror the unit is in standby mode awaiting aremote
start. A fast flashing green light means the wiper is cycling.
RedLight–anilluminatedredlightindicateseitherawarningoranalarmhasoccurred.Awarningisa
conditionthat,ifnotaddressed,couldimpacttheunit’sperformance.Warningsshouldbeaddressedas
soonaspossible.WarningsareaccompaniedwithaflashingredLED,asinglebeep,amessage,anda
yellowscreen.Analarmisaconditionthathassignificantlyimpactedtheunit’sperformanceanditmust
be addressed immediately. Alarms are accompanied with a solid red LED, continuous beeping, a
message, and a red screen.
Audio Alarm
The audio alarm or beeper, will alertthe operatorto anyconditionsout oftheordinary.Asinglebeep
willsoundifawarningoccurs;continuousbeepingwillsoundifanalarmoccurs.Theaudioalarmmaybe
disabledtemporarilyorpermanentlyintheSettingsMenu,item2.3.Thesoundlevelofaunitoperating
normally isless than70db(A). However, soundlevels canexceed 85 db(A) with theaudioalarm on.

5.3Plugging in the UV-H for the first time
1. Ensurethat allexternalwiringiscomplete(seesection4.5)andallthepanelsoftheunitareclosed
before connecting the power cord.
2. Plugfemale endofpowercordintopowerentrymodulelocatedonleftsideofthefrontpanel.Plug
the male end of the power cord into a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI).
CAUTION!Avoidcontinuouslystartingandstoppingtheunitwithina24hrperiod,asthiswillacceleratethe
aging of theUV lamps and voidwarranty. See ProductSpecificationTable forpermissible lamp cycles.
CAUTION! There must be waterin the treatment chamberto prevent damage tointernalcomponents.
In the event of alack of water or water supplybeing turned off,shutdown the unit untilthe water
supply can be restored. In the event of a power failure, the unit will shut down and the optional
solenoid valve will close, preventing water from flowing. When the power returns, the unit will
automaticallyrestartandperformaself-test.Ifnofaultsaredetected,theunitwillreturntonormal
operationandtheoptionalsolenoidvalvewillopen.Note: evenduringabrownout,supplyvoltage
maydroplowenoughtoshutdowntheunit.Iftheunitdoesnotautomaticallyrestartasdescribed
above, shutdown and unplug the unit and plug it in again.
3. Oncetheunitispluggedin,theLEDilluminates,anaudibletoneisissuedandthedisplaybecomes
activetoconfirmallthreedevicesarefunctional.Theunitthenperformsaself-diagnostic.Enterthe
