Basic information
What are the features of a TENS/EMS device?
The TEN 603 TENS/EMS device is a device for electrical stimula-
tion. It conducts an electric current to the skin.
EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) = Muscle tissue is stimulated
electrically.
TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) =
The nerves are stimulated electrically.
This handy, convenient TENS/EMS device is used to electrically
stimulate targeted areas of the body.
Information on using TENS/EMS
The principle purpose of the TENS/EMS device is to stimulate
the nerves and muscles.
How does TENS work?
According to scientific theory, electrical stimulation therapy
works in several ways:
• The gentle electrical pulses travel through the skin to the
nearby nerves, blocking pain or rather preventing it from
reaching the brain from its point of origin.
• The gentle electrical pulses increase the body’s own
production of natural pain-reducing substances such as
endorphins.

Safety
10
• Furthermore, it can be assumed that the electrical stimu-
lation also stimulates blood flow. Muscles contract upon
contact with electrical stimulation and then expand. The
repeated contracting and relaxing causes the blood to flow
in and out, improving circulation.
How does EMS work?
The EMS device sends soothing pulses through the skin and
stimulates the nerves in the area being treated. When the
muscle receives this signal, it contracts as if the brain had sent
the signal itself. As the strength of the signal increases, the
muscle contracts in the same way as it does during exercise. If
the signal is interrupted, the muscle relaxes and the process
repeats. The goal of electrical muscle stimulation is contraction
or vibration in the muscles. Normal muscle activity is controlled
by the central and peripheral nervous system, which sends
electrical signals to the muscles. The EMS functions in a similar
way, but it uses an external source (stimulator) in combination
with electrodes placed on the skin to conduct the electrical
pulses into the body. The pulses stimulate the nerves so that
they send targeted signals to specific muscles, which then re-
act by contracting – just like during normal muscle activity.

Safety
18
Notes on using the TENS/EMS device
− The adhesive electrodes may only be con-
nected to the TEN 603 TENS/EMS device. Please
ensure that the device is always switched off
when attaching or removing the adhesive
electrodes.
− Always switch off the device before reposition-
ing the adhesive electrodes of the TENS/EMS
device during use.
− Under some circumstances, use of the TENS/EMS
device can irritate the skin. If skin irritations arise
such as redness, blistering or itching, discontin-
ue use of the TENS/EMS device. Do not always
attach the adhesive electrodes in the exact same
locations, as this can lead to skin irritation.
Before using the device, you should thoroughly
cleanse and then dry the areas of the skin where
you intend to place the adhesive electrodes. The
skin should be clean and free of oils.
Do not connect the lead wires and adhesive elec-
trodes unless the TENS/EMS device is switched off.
− To avoid damaging the wires, do not pull on
them to disconnect them from the adhesive
electrode plug connections or from the device.
Always pull from the plugs when removing the
lead wires from the adhesive electrodes or the
device.

Safety
19
− The adhesive electrodes may be connected to
or disconnected from the device using the sock-
ets and the electric lead wire.
− Every person responds differently to electrical
nerve stimulation. If the treatment is unsuc-
cessful, consult your physician. Please remove
the protective film prior to attaching the adhe-
sive electrodes. The adhesive strength of the
electrodes depends on the characteristics of the
skin, storage, and number of times they have
been used. If the full surface of the adhesive
electrodes no longer adheres to the surface of
the skin, they need to be replaced with new
adhesive electrodes. The entire surface of the
adhesive electrodes must be in contact with the
skin in order to avoid a high local current den-
sity, which can lead to burning of the skin. After
use, reattach the adhesive electrodes to the
protective film and keep them in the polybag to
prevent them from drying out. This maintains
their ability to adhere.
− Avoid touching the adhesive electrodes during
use, as this can cause a short-circuit under
some circumstances, resulting in an excessive
current density. This excessive current density
can lead to burning and injury!

Safety
20
− DITTMANN textile electrodes, back belt, knee
cuff or neck collar, available as accessories, are
suitable for use with the TEN 603 TENS/EMS de-
vice for the application of special programs for
different body areas.
− When using these articles with the TEN 603
TENS/EMS, please observe the user manuals for
these articles, particularly their safety instruc-
tions.
Where may the adhesive electrodes be
applied?
− Every person responds differently to electrical
nerve stimulation. The electrodes therefore
need not be kept to specific areas. If the appli-
cation is unsuccessful, consult your physician
in order to determine what positioning tech-
niques are best suited for you.
− Familiarize yourself with the proper placement
of the adhesive electrodes using the instruc-
tions in the chapter “Adhering the adhesive
electrodes to the skin” and in the example illus-
trations in the chapter “Adhesive electrodes” for
both TENS and EMS use.
− Do not use adhesive electrodes which
are smaller than 1.57 × 1.57 in or 2.46 in²
(40 × 40 mm, or 16 cm²), as this could result
in an excessively high electricity density and
cause injury.
