1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 General
ThismanualappliestotheM-SQPro15/18MarineDieselGener-
angsetcontrolledbyDigitalDieselControlrstlaunchedinSep-
tember2005.Forothermodelsrefertoothermanualsavailable
onourwebsite:www.whisperpower.com.
Toensurereliabilityanddurabilityoftheequipment,itisvery
importantthattheinstallaoniscarriedoutwiththeutmostcare
andaenon.Toavoidproblems,suchastemperatureproblems,
noiselevels,vibraon,etc.theinstruconssetoutinthismanual
mustbefollowedandallinstallaonworkmustbecarriedout
professionally.
1.2 Locaon
SinceWhisperPowergenerangsetshaveextremelycompactdi-
mensions,theycanbeinstalledinghtlocaons.Pleaseconsider
thatevenalmostmaintenance-freemachinerymustsllremain
accessible.
Whenselecngthelocaonareainwhichtomountthegenerat-
ingset,makesurethereissucientroomtocarryoutanymain-
tenancework.Theunitmustbeeasilyaccessibleontheservice
sideandonthedistribuonsidetohaveaccesstotheV-belt
Pleasealsonotethatinspiteoftheautomacoilpressuresensor
itissllessenalthattheoillevelischeckedregularly.

Posionthegenerangsetaslowaspossibleinthevessel.The
generangsetisalreadysecuredtothebaseframebymeansof
exibleenginemounngs.Thebaseframecanbemountedto
theshipmainstructure.Usetheincludedmounngtemplateto
determinethemounngspots.
WhisperPowergenerangsetsarestandardequippedwitha
soundcover.Thecanopyhasbeendesignedtogiveeecve
soundinsulaon.Foropmumsoundandvibraondampening,
thefollowingfactorsshouldbeconsidered.
1. Mostimportantisthestructureonwhichthegeneratoris
placestobes.Seegure1.Directlybelowtherubber
mounngsthestructureshouldbesupportedvercallyto
thesuperstructureoftheship.
2. Avoidmounngthegenerangsetincloseproximitytothin
wallsoroorsthatmaycauseresonance.
3. Sounddampeningisextremelypoorifthegenerangsetis
mountedonalightweightimsysurfacesuchasplywood
whichwillonlyamplifyvibraons.Ifmounngonathinner
surfacecannotbeavoided,thisshouldbeatleastbe
reinforcedwithseningstrutsorribbing.Ifpossible,holes
shouldbedrilledorcutthroughthesurfacetohelpreduce
theresonance.Coveringthesurroundingwallsandoors
withaheavycoangplusfoamwillcertainlyimprovethe
situaon.
4. Neverconnectthebaseofthegenerangsetdirectlyto
bulkheadsortanks.
1.4 Venlaon
Thegenerangsetnormallydrawsairfromtheengineroom.
Engineroomswithnaturalvenlaonmusthaveventopenings
ofadequatesizeandlocaontoenablethegenerangsetto
operatewithoutoverheang.Toallowanamplesupplyofair
withinthetemperaturelimitsofthegenerangsetanopeningof
atleastahalfsquaremeter(0,5m2)isrequired.

A“sealed”enginecompartmentmusthaveagoodextracon
venlatortomaintainreasonableengineroomtemperatures.
Hightemperatureofintakeairreducesengineperformanceand
increasesenginecoolanttemperatures.“Theratedpowerof
thegeneratorismeasuredatanambienttemperatureof25°C,
eachtemperatureincreaseof5°Creducestheenginepowerby
about2%”.Tominimizetheseeectstheengineroomtempera-
turemustnotbemorethan15ºCabovetheoutsideambientair
temperature.
Applyacombinaonofvenlators,blowersandairintakeducng
tomeetthetemperaturelimit.Theairinletductsshouldrunto
theboomoftheengineroomtoclearfumesfromthebilge
andtocirculatefreshair.Airoutletsshouldbeatthetopofthe
engineroomtoremovethehoestair.Anengineroomblower
shouldbeusedasanextraconvenlatortoremoveairfromthe
engineroom.
Incaseswhereitisimpossibletomeettheabovemenonedtem-
peraturelimitbyusingmachineroomvenlaon,conneconsare
tobemadeforanairinletdirectlytotheenclosure.Withthese
conneconsthegenerangsetcanbedirectlyconnectedtoan
airduct.
Airinletsshouldbelouvered,whereappropriate,toprotectthe
engineroomandtoprotectthegenerangsetfromwaterspray.
Asanextraprecauon,thengofacowlvenlatorwithacover
boxlocatedashighaspossible,isrecommended.
1.5 Connecons
Thegenerangsetcomessuppliedwithallsupplylinesandout-
putcable(i.e.electriccables,coolingwaterconnecons,exhaust,
fuellinesetc.)alreadyconnectedtotheengineandgenerator.
Thesupplylinesarefedthroughthecapsule’sbase.Theconnec-
onsaremarkedasshowning.2.
Allelectricalconnecons,cabletypesandsizesmustcomplywith
theappropriatenaonalregulaons.Suppliedcablesarerated
forambienttemperaturesupto70°C.Ifthecablesarerequired
tomeethighertemperaturerequirements,theymustberun
throughconduits.

1.5.1 Fuel supply
1 FUEL TANK
Fueltanksshouldbemadeofappropriatematerialsuchas
(stainless)steelorplasc.Steeltanksshouldnotbegalvanized
orpaintedinside.Condensaoncanoccurinmetaltankswhen
temperaturechanges.Therefore,wateraccumulatesatthebot-
tomofthetankandprovisionsshouldbemadeforthedrainage
ofthiswater.
Thetankwillneedallingconnecon,areturnconneconand
anairvenlaonconneconwhichwillrequireproteconagainst
waterentry.
Someocialregulaonsdonotallowconneconpointsatthe
baseofthefueltank;inthisinstanceconneconsaretobemade
atthetopofthetankwithinternaltubingdowntoafewcm
abovetheboomofthetank.
2 FUEL LIFT PUMP
Thegenerangsetitselfisequippedwithafuellipump;there-
forethetankcanbeinstalledatalowerlevelthanthegenerang
set.Themaximumsuconheightis1m.TheM-SQ-PRO18hasa
mechanicalfuelli-pumpthatshouldbeprimedmanuallybefore
therststart/use.´
Ifthepumphastolithefuelhigherthanonemeteranexternal
electricalfuellipumpmustbeinstalled(Art.No.50201161)
orheavydutypump(Art.No.50201168).Thecontrolboardis
alreadypreparedtoconnectanextrafuelpump.
3 FUEL PIPES
Whenthetankisabovethegenerangsetwerecommendend-
ingthereturnlineonthetopofthetank.
Whenthereturnisonthetop-incaseofaleakagethereturn
linecannotoverowbecauseofsiphoning.Onewillonlyneeda
fuelcockinthefuelsupplyline(seegure3).Whenthetankis
belowthegenerangsetwerecommendendingthereturnline
ontheboomofthetank(A)belowtheinletofthesupplyline

Bothsupplyandreturnfuelpipelinesshouldbeappropriatema-
terialand8mmouterdiametertubing.Thequalityofthetubing
offuelpipescouldbesubmiedtolocalregulaonsdepending
ontheapplicaonofthevessel.
Thefuelpipescanbeplumbedtotheexiblehoseswhichare
onthegenerangsetandhaveaconnecontotto8mmpipe.
ThisfuellinesfulllsCEstandardsandareinaccordancewithISO
7840A2.Itisimportanttoavoidbendsinthepipes,astheycould
trapairbubbles.Thereturnpipeshouldneverbeconnectedto
thesuconpipeortootherconsumersofdieselfuel,suchasthe
propulsionengineandheatersandreturnpipes
4 FUEL FILTERS
Anefuellterisinstalledwhichrequiresmaintenance.Whis-
perPoweradvisestoinstallanextrafuellter/waterfuelsepara-
tornearthefueltank.
Beforestarngyourgenerangsetfortherstmefollowthe
fuelsystembleedingprocedureintheuser’smanual.
1.5.2 Cooling
Intercoolingisbasedonarawwaterpump,heatexchangerand
water-injectedexhaust.Coolingliquidintheinternalcooling
systemiscooledinaheatexchangerbyoutboardwater(raw
waterorseawater).Aertherawwateriswarmedupintheheat
exchangeritisdumpedoverboardbyinjecngitintheexhaust.
Thegenerangsetshouldhaveitsownseawater(coolantwater)
inletandshouldnotbeconnectedtoanyotherenginesystems.
Aproperlyinstalledcoolingsystemiscricaltokeepenginetem-
peratureswithinanacceptablerange.Ensurethattheinstallaon
complieswiththefollowinginstallaoninstrucons.
1 THE INTERNAL COOLING SYSTEM
Theinternalcoolingsystemshouldbelledwithcoolingliquid.
(Refertotheuser’smanual2.5.13)Whentheenginebecomes
hottheliquidexpandsandthesystemispressurized.Aerthe
pressurebecomestoohighthereleasevalveinthellingcapon
themanifoldopensandtheexpandingliquidispressedintothe
expansiontankthatisinthedelivery.Alsotheairinthesystem
thatiscollectedatthetopofthemanifoldisreleasedinthisway.
Whentheliquidcoolsdowntherewillbeunder-pressure.Anoth-
ervalveopensandtheliquidissuckedintothemanifoldagain.
Thissystemworksonlywhenthereisenoughliquidinially.This
hastobecheckedwhencommissioningthegeneratorset.By
llinguptheexpansiontankwhennecessarytherewillalwaysbe
enoughliquidinthesystem.Thehosethatisinthedeliveryhas
tobeconnectedtotheconnecononthesideofthellingcap.
Thishoseismadeofheatresistantplascandisnotsensivefor
kinks.

2 RAW WATER SUPPLY
Forrawwatersupplythefollowinginstallaonmaterialsare
required:-askinng-aseacock-awaterstrainer-hosesand
clamps.Inordertokeepthesuconresistanceinthelineata
minimum,theseawaterintakesystem(i.e.seacock,trough-hull
ng,inletlter,etc.)musthaveaninnerdiameterofatleast
25.4mmdiameter(1”).Thesuconhoseshouldbekeptasshort
aspossible.Rawwaterplumbingshouldavoidbendsasmuchas
possible.Restriconofrawwaterow,causedbykinkedhoses,
undersizedpipesorconnecons,willreducetheenginecooling
capability.Thisisthemaincauseforoverheangofanengine.
Aerrunningthegenerangsetfortherstme,checkthecool-
antowrateusingastopwatchandbyholdingapailofaknown
volumeunderthewet-exhaustoutlet.Theowrateshouldbe
accordingtothedataintheuser’smanual
3 INSTALLATION OF THROUGH HULL FITTING
Itisgoodpracceforyachtstouseahullinletngwithan
integratedstrainer(waterscoop).Forpropulsionenginesin
motorboatsthewaterscoopisoenmountedagainstthesailing
direcontoinducemorewaterintakeforcooling.
Thisshouldnotbedoneinthecaseofagenerang
set!Whensailingathigherspeeds,waterwillbe
forcedintotheinletandyourgenerangsetwill
overow!(seegure7).

Onmotorboatsandonsailingboatsthewaterscoopforagen-
erangsetshouldbeedwiththeopeningfacedbackwardsto
preventwaterbeingforcedinduringsailing.
4 WATER STRAINER
Useanappropriatewaterstrainerwithconneconsof25.4mm
(1”).Installthewaterstrainerinawellaccessibleposion,5cm
abovethewaterline(seeg.6,ref.6).
5 SIPHON BREAKER (AIR VENT)
Whenthepointofwaterinjeconisbelowthewaterline,then
-whentheengineisstopped-thereisariskthatthecoolingwater
mayentertheengineasaresultofsiphoning.Toavoidthishap-
pening,thegenerangsetisdesignedtoaccommodateasiphon
breaker(airvent).Seegure2.Inthestandarddeliverythe
conneconsarebypassed.Hoseof25.4mm(1”)innerdiameter
shouldbeused.

Ifthegenerangsetcannotbemountedsuchthattheboomof
thegenerangsetisplacedabovethewaterline,anairventmust
beinstalled.
Extendthewaterhoseoftheby-pass60cmabovewaterlineand
installanairvent.Ideally,theairventshouldbemountedabove
theyachtkeelcentreline(i.e.tominimizetheinuenceofsway-
ingonthewaterintake).Seegure6,ref.5.
Fastmotorboatswilllaydeeperwhensailingatlargespeedand
cancausepressureonthewaterinlet.Thisshouldbeavoidedto
preventoodingtheengine.
Iftheairventiscloggedthewaterhoseswillnotbe
ventedwhenthegenerangsethasstoppedandwater
canbeforcedintotheengine.Thisleadstoimmediate
engineproblemsandeventuallyseveredamage!

1.5.3 Exhaust system
Waterisinjectedintheexhaustsystemofthegenerangset.In
thiswaythecoolingwaterthathaspassedtheheatexchangeris
mixedwiththeexhaustgases.Temperatureandvolumeofthe
gasesaretherebyreducedconsiderably,sothatarubberexhaust
hosecanbeusedandthelevelofnoiseisreducedaswell.
1 STANDARD EXHAUST SYSTEM INSTALLATION
Thegenerangsetexhaustsystemmustremaincompletely
independentandseparatefromtheexhaustsystemofanyother
engineonboard.Awaterlockpreventsthegenerangsetfrom
beingoodedbycoolingwaterandshouldbeinstalledasclose
tothegenerangsetaspossible.Thelockmustbelargeenough
toholdtheenrewatervolumeheldinthehosefromthetop
ofthegoosenecktothewaterlock.Thewaterlockmustbe
installedatthelowestpointoftheexhaustsystem(ref.tog.
10,ref.1).Theexhausthosemusthaveaninnerdiameterof50
mm(1½”).Theexhaustsystemmustbeinstalledsothattheback
pressureinsidetheexhaustdoesnotexceed0.07bar(1psi–70
cmwatercolumn)andtotallengthfromthegeneratortothetop
ofthegooseneckorwater/separatordoesnotexceed3m(10
.).(Refertoparagraph5.4.3oftheuser’smanual).
Theexhausthosedescendsfromthecapsuletothewaterlock.
Thenthehoserisesviathe“gooseneck”tothethrough-hull
exhaustoutlet,situatedminimum50mmabovethewaterline
(seeg.8,ref5.)The“gooseneck”mustbevercalandsituated
preferablealongtheship’skeelcentreline.Ifthegenerangset
ismountedlessthan600mm(24”)abovethewaterline,a“goose
neck”mustbeinstalledtopreventtheenginefromoverow-
ing.Itisrecommendedtoinstallanextramuerclosetothe
through-hullng.

2 “SUPER SILENT” EXHAUST SYSTEM
Inordertoreducethenoiselevelofthegenerangsettoamin-
imum,anopontoreducetheexhaustnoisefurther(especially
exhaustwatersplashing)isanexhaust/waterseparator.The
exhaust/waterseparatorallowsthecoolingwatertobeejected
throughaline(gure9,ref.A)separatefromtheexhaustfumes
andalsofunconsasagoosenecktopreventwaterfromood-
ingtheengine.Iftheexhaust/waterseparatorismountedmore
than60cmabovethewaterlevelanaddionalgooseneckisnot
required.

Ifthethrough-hullexhaustoutlethastobemountedfarfrom
thegenerangsetanexhaust/waterseparatormustdenitely
beinstalled(Totallengthoftheexhaustpipingfromgeneratorto
topofgooseneck(waterseparator)ismorethan3m.)(ref.tog.

Theseawaterfromtheseparatormustthenrundownalongthe
shortestpossiblepathtothethrough-hulloutlet.Onlyaerthe
exhaust/waterseparatortheexhausthosemayhavealengthof
over7,5m(ref.tog.10)
