Q: Is the TV-DEX Remote required to be turned on for matching
to hearing instruments?
A: No. The TV-DEX Remote must remain off for matching to hearing
instruments. If the TV-DEX Remote is turned on, matching will
fail. Follow the instructions in Compass and press the volume up
and down buttons simultaneously when told to do so.
Q: Can multiple Widex hearing aid wearers share one TV-DEX
Base and Remote? For example, a husband and wife each have
DREAM440 hearing instruments and want to watch TV together.
A: No. Both hearing aid wearers must purchase their own TV-DEX
System. Communication between the TV-DEX and Widex wireless
hearing instruments is done on a secure channel that is coded by
the TV-DEX Remote serial number obtained during the matching
process. A Y-cord will have to be purchased from an electronics
store to split the signal from the TV to each TV-Base.
Q: Is a TV-DEX System required for each TV in the house? For
example, a TV in the main room and one in the bedroom.
A: No. The hearing aid wearer can purchase one TV-DEX System,
with additional TV-DEX Bases. A purchase of one TV-DEX Base
for each additional TV will be required to use with televisions in
other rooms. The TV-DEX Remote is taken from room to room and
used to transmit to the hearing instruments. After changing rooms,
place the TV-DEX Remote into the TV-DEX Base for approximately
5 seconds to pair the TV-DEX Remote to that room’s TV-DEX
Base. Once paired it is used as normal (see picture below).
Q: What standard mini-jack connector is used for personal audio
device input?
A: 3.5 mm (1/8“)
TV-DEX QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q: Which sound source is the default sound source when both TV
and audio input is used?
A: The On/Off button toggles through the input marked TV first,
then the Audio input and then Off in a sequence.
Q: What is the Room Off button on the TV-DEX Remote?
A: When this feature is activated, the
hearing aid microphones are shut off so
the user is not disturbed by background
noise or conversation while listening to
the television.
Q: What do the green and red lights on the buttons on the
TV-DEX Remote indicate?
A: A green light will appear on the On/Off button and a red light
will appear on the Room Off button. They indicate the various
states as below:
Constant green: transmission on
Alternating from green to red: transmission off
Constant red: Room Off active
Flashing red and green: battery charging
Flashing green: transmission
Q: How do I tell if a TV-DEX Remote is fully charged and how long
does it take to charge?
A: The green and red lights will flash when a TV-DEX Remote is
charging. The lights will stop flashing when the TV-DEX Remote
is completely charged. If the TV-DEX Remote is completely
discharged, it will take approximately 4 hours to fully charge at
which time the lights will stop flashing.
Q: How many hours of use on should be expected on a full charge?
A: Approximately 10 hours of transmission.
Q: Is there any danger in leaving a fully charged TV-DEX Remote
in the TV-DEX Base?
A: No. The charging circuit has built-in over-charging protection.
In fact, it is best to leave a fully charged TV-DEX Remote in the
TV-DEX Base to maintain the charge.
Q: What type of batteries does the TV-DEX take?
A: The TV-DEX uses a built-in rechargeable battery.

Q: What is the volume range capacity on the TV-DEX Remote?
A: The range is 40 dB. The big span is due to the unknown level
from the TV or other input. The max output level is limited by
the hearing aid.
Q: The green and red lights start flashing when I remove and
re-insert a fully charged TV-DEX Remote into the TV-DEX Base.
Does this mean there is a problem?
A: No. This is normal. The TV-DEX actually has two charging modes:
A: Quick Charge Mode
B: Maintenance Charge Mode
The Quick Charge Mode takes approximately 4 hours to rapidly
charge the TV-DEX Remote to almost full capacity. When the
battery is almost fully charged, the charging mode switches to
Maintenance Charging Mode. This maintenance mode prevents
over-charging and compensates for the battery’s normal
discharge.
If the TV-DEX Remote is removed and re-inserted into the
TV-DEX Base, it is normal for the green and red lights to flash
for some time as the charging circuit needs time to distinguish
and then choose the proper mode to use. The actual time will
depend upon the actual charging state of the battery (the
percentage of the battery that is charged).
Q: Why does the TV-DEX Remote accept a charge, but does not
transmit any sound?
A: This may occur when:
TV-DEX Remote is out of range
The sound source and TV-DEX Base are not properly
connected
TV-DEX Remote is running low and requires further charging
Use only Widex charger cords as others may charge, but not
transmit
Q: Is it possible to listen in stereo with only one hearing aid?
A: Stereo can only be reproduced using two hearing instruments. To
ensure that monaurally fitted hearing aid users can hear both the
left and right side stereo signals in the hearing aid, the switch at
the bottom of the TV-Base needs to be set to “one” hearing aid.
Q: How do you hook up the TV-DEX?
A: The TV-DEX system includes two cables, one 3.5 mm jack to red
& white phono cables (also known as RCA cables) and also one
3.5mm jack to 3.5 mm jack audio cable. The Red & White phono
cables connect to the back of a television’s audio output (red/
white outlets) and the 3.5mm portion of that cable connects to
TV port on the back of the TV-DEX base. The 3.5 mm jack to 3.5
mm jack is used to stream audio from a computer, mp3 player,
or stereo, and connects to the audio port on the back of the
TV-DEX base.
Q: What happens if my patient has one of those new TV sets that
have a digital audio signal (coaxial or optical) output instead of
the standard stereo analog audio output?
A: One may use a Gefen TV or FiiO D3 (D03K) Digital to Analog
Converter Adaptor. To purchase an adaptor, please visit:
These adaptors may require a separate cable to connect to
the coaxial or optical output on the back of the TV. A TOSLink
cable is for a jack on the TV called a digital optical audio jack
and the S/PDIF cable is for a coaxial audio jack. These cables
can be purchased at Best Buy or various online retailers such
as Amazon.
Q: Does the TV-DEX Remote need to be worn around the neck?
A: No. It just needs to be within 3 feet (arm’s length) of the hearing
aid, but wearing around the neck may give the best results.
The communication between the hearing instruments and the
TV-DEX Remote is based on the highly directional short range
inductive antenna technology. The positioning of the antenna in
the TV-DEX Remote is optimized for use worn around the neck
where the position is predictable. The advantage being that you
can move around in your living room with the TV-Controller
and have excellent audio transmission. (It is not advised to wear
around the neck if the wearer has a pacemaker).
Q: What is the furthest distance the TV-DEX Base will transmit to
the TV-DEX Remote?
A: The TV-DEX Base needs to be within 30 feet away (10 meters)
from the TV-DEX Remote in order to transmit successfully.
