THE FM SYSTEM
An FM system is a wireless communication system
whichallowsthesoundfromthemicrophone(SCOLA
TALK)tobesentdirectlytothehearingaidviaasmall
receiver(SCOLAFLEXorSCOLABUDDY)inthesame
waythataradioreceivesasignalfromaradiotrans-
mitter

BATTERY INFORMATION

Thesecaneitherberechargeableorstandardalkaline
non-rechargeablebatteriesIfyouhaveanyquestions
aboutthetypeacquisitionoruseofbatteriesplease
consult the hearing care professional where you ac-
quiredyourSCOLA™FMsystem
Therechargeablebatteriesincludedarenickel-metal-
hydride(NiMH)typebatteriesTheyareenvironmen-
tallyfriendlyanddonotcontainheavymetalsThecon-
tactsurfaceatthenegativepoleensuresthatonlythis
typeofbatterycanbechargeddirectlyinSCOLATALK
WARNING
If you use other types of rechargeable batteries for your SCOLA
TALK, they must be charged in a separate charger. Of non-re-
chargeable batteries, only alkaline batteries may be used. If you
try to charge this type of battery, all that will happen is that all
the battery symbol bars will start to flash in the display.

First open the table stand Squeeze the sides of the
standtoliftoffthebatterycoverandinsertthebat-
teriesasindicatedbythesymbolsinthebottomofthe
tablestand
IftheSCOLATALKisusedbyyoungchildrenthecover
maybeprovidedwithatamper-resistantscrew()to
preventbatteryremovalThescrewisavailableasan
optionalaccessory

chargedbatteriesyourSCOLATALKcanoperatecon-
tinuouslyfortenhoursThedisplayshowsthebattery
powerlevelIfthebatteriesareflatthiswillbeindicat-
edbyaflashingbarWerecommendthatyoualways
haveasetofsparebatterieswithyou
WARNING
Low battery can cause the sound transmission to suddenly
stop.
WARNING
Batteries that are no longer usable should be disposed of in ac-
cordance with applicable environmental requirements.

In this setting your SCOLA TALK is on and the
microphonereceives speech andsoundfromall
directionsThismodeiscalled”omnidirectional”
Werecommendthatyouusethismodewhenthe
peopleorsoundsyouwishtoheararesituatedall
aroundthemicrophoneYourSCOLATALKcould
forexamplebeplacedinthemiddleofatable

“directional” It mostly picks up sound signals
coming from in front attenuating unwanted
sounds coming from beside or behind you We
recommend that you use this mode when you
wanttolistentoapersonlocatedinfrontofthe
microphone
In this setting SCOLA TALK’s directionality is
evenmoreeffectiveThismodeiscalled”super-
directional” We recommend that you use this
mode in difficult listening situations with loud
noiselevelsorwhenthesoundsourceisfurther
away

TheaudiocordprovidedisusedtoconnecttheSCO-
LATALKtoaudioequipment(egTVandradio)Plug
theaudiocorddirectlyintotheheadphonejackofthe
audioequipmentPlugtheotherendoftheaudiocord
intotheaudiojackoftheSCOLATALKIftheSCOLA
TALKisoffitwillautomaticallyturnonwhenyoucon-
nectittotheaudioequipmentiftheaudiosignallevel
issufficientlyhigh
The sound signal volume can usually be adjusted us-
ingthevolumecontroloftheaudioequipmentIfthe
signalfromtheaudioequipmentistooweaktheSCO-
LATALKwillautomaticallyturnoffafterfiveminutes
To prevent this from happening you must increase
thevolumeontheaudioequipmentorsettheSCOLA
TALK in the (omnidirectional) setting which will
switchonSCOLATALK’sownmicrophoneInthetwo
othersettingstheaudioinputfunctionisdeactivated
OtherconnectionpossibilitiesincludeSCART(egfor
TVorvideo)andphonoplugs(egforhi-fi)

PlugthemicrophoneintotheaudiojackoftheSCOLA
TALKSwitchtheSCOLATALKoninthe (omnidi-
rectional)settingTheexternalmicrophoneisnotac-
tiveinthetwoother microphonesettings (direc-
tional)and (superdirectional)
Audiobutton
Presstheaudiopen-pushbuttononcesothatthedis-
play shows the channel number and “HI” alternate-
lyThisindicatesthattheaudioinputfunctionisnow
readyforconnectionofamicrophonePresstheaudio
buttonagainifyouwishtousetheaudioinputfunc-
tionforordinaryaudioormultimediaequipmentThis
will turn off the ”HI” symbol and “LO” will be briefly
displayed
Consult your hearing care professional to establish
whetheryoucanbenefitfromanexternalmicrophone

Channelselectionbutton
In the SCOLA TALK display you can see the current
FM transmitting channel. The channels selected for
the SCOLA receiver and for SCOLA TALK must be
the same in order for the system to work.
When the SCOLA TALK is switched on the display
shows the current FM transmitting channel Your
SCOLATALKispresettousethesamechannelasthe
SCOLA receiver The channel selection button should
onlybe used in caseswherethereis a mismatchbe-
tweenthetwochannelsorifthereisinterferenceon
thechannelYoucanpressthechannelselectionbut-
tonusingapenorthelike
Youcanalsoselectanotherchannel(bothontheSCOLA
receiverandSCOLATALK)ifthereisinterferenceonthe
startingchannel
NOTE
Note that what is being tranmitted from the SCOLA TALK could
possibly be picked up by another FM system.
