Introduction
The SBC35-C398 Single Board Computer (SBC) uses a Freescale i.MX6 ARM Cortex A9 Single, Dual, or Quad-core CPU. It
is compatible with WinSystems’ IO60 interface specification and incorporates a single 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet
controller, 24 digital I/O signals, five serial ports, HDMI 1.4 video (with digital audio support), and a Mobile Industry
Processor Interface (MIPI) capture and display interface. Additionally, the SBC35-C398 contains a MiniPCIe connector,
multiple Universal Serial Bus (USB) ports, along with Storage Device (SD), microSD, and CompactFlash (CFlash) sockets.
The ARM Cortex A9 core processor combines high performance multimedia graphics with a rich mixture of industrial
I/O. Its proficient power management coupled with a rugged design offers the unique combination of high
performance and low power, allowing operation from -40° to +85°C without active cooling. The wide power input
range of +10 to +50VDC also provides flexibility across various DC power sources.

1.0 Important Information Before you Proceed
Naming conventions for the three standard versions of the SBC35-398 reflect the number of ARM processor core(s)
and are referenced as SBC35-398Q (Quad Core), SBC35-398DL (Dual Core), or SBC35-398S (Single Core).
This Product Manual covers all versions of the SBC35-C398. Since the SBC35-C398(Q) contains all features, this manual
depicts the SBC35-C398Qin all illustrations. In the Connectors, Jumpers, and I/O tables that follow, each section of the
table has a checklist similar to Figure 1.0-1. In this example, the SBC35-C398(Q) has Serial I/O ports at J18, while the DL
and Sversions of the board do not. Therefore, the SBC35-C398(Q) has a checkmark in the version column while the
columns for DL and Sremain empty. To further illustrate absence of a feature, empty columns are shaded.

1.2 Positioning the Board for Reference
To ensure your view is consistent with the illustrations that follow, position the board with the component side facing
you as depicted in Figure 1.3-1, with the serial, USB, and power input facing to the left. The illustrations provide
locations of connectors and jumpers, and other information critical to setup and operation of the SBC35-C398.

1.3 Locating Connectors and Jumpers
The board’s topside contains jumper blocks and connectors. Jumper blocks set the operational configuration of the
SBC35-C398. Figure 1.3-1 provides locations of connectors and jumper blocks for the SBC35-C398Q, which has the full
complement of features. The DL and Sversions of this board do not have all components as depicted in Figure 1.3-1.

2.0 Connectors, Jumpers, and I/O
The tables in this section contain information about connectors and jumpers on the SBC35-C398. Use this information, along with the location information
provided in Figure 1.3-1, to set up and configure the SBC35-C398 to suit your particular needs. The tables that follow provide a Layout column with an image of
the connector or jumper depicting its relative location on the board. The narrow columns to the right of the Layout column have a checkmark (or lack thereof)
to indicate whether the option is included in that version of the SBC35-C398. See Figure 1.0-1 on page 1for further information on how to identify features for
the three different versions of the SBC35-C398.

Power Controls
[J2]
J2 provides inputs for Pushbutton (PB) Reset, Power ON/OFF, and Tamper detection. The Power On/Off and
Tamper circuits (pins 3 & 4 respectively) connect directly to the i.MX6 processor. PB Reset connects to the
Master Reset input of a voltage supervisor and reset control circuit. The on board connector, its mating
counterpart, and crimping connector part numbers are provided in the table below.

COM1 uses the advanced EXAR SP339E multi-protocol transceiver and supports Loopback, RS-232, RS-485
(half-duplex), and RS-422 (full-duplex). RS-232 can transmit and receive data up to 1Mbps, while the RS-
422/485 ports support data transmission speeds up to 5 Mbps. The SP339E transceiver includes programmable
line termination for the RS-422/485, loopback mode, and slew rate.
A termination resister may be necessary for accurate RS-485/422 communication, but must be removed when
the lines are used for RS-232.
WinSystems provides scripts that configure selected modes for each UART with the example operating
systems. The settings used by the scripts to configure different communication protocols are shown in the
table below.

The USB On-the-Go (OTG) connector enables the SBC35-C398 to be connected to a USB host (such as a desktop
PC) allowing the SBC35-398 to appear as a USB flash drive, digital audio device, camera, etc. The USB OTG port
can also be used as a debug interface to the SBC35-C398 when it runs certain operating systems such as
Android. If the cable assembly that is plugged into J8 grounds pin four (4), the SBC35-C398 is the host. If the
cable assembly plugged into J8 does not ground pin four (4), the SBC35-C398 is the client.

The SBC35-C398 supports CFast high performance storage at J502, which is located on the back of the board.
The SATA compatible data card consists of 24 Pins. The raised ridge along the back top of the card is useful for
making sure the card is oriented properly. The pinout for J502 is provided in the table below.

The SBC35-C398 (Qand DL versions) includes a MiniPCIe socket at J7. Pin definitions are provided in the table
below. Insert the MiniPCIe module into J7 as depicted. Once it is fully inserted, secure it to the board with the
two Phillips pan head machine screws.

positioned where the beveled edge is on the right front.
Do not insert or remove the Micro SD card while the SBC35-C398 is powered up or in the
process of powering up or down. This could corrupt the file system on the removable
media. Always power down the board completely, then remove or insert media.
