Quick Installation Guide
For XR-600 Models
The XR-600 Series Access Point (AP) is a new class of low
cost, zero touch AP within the Xirrus wireless portfolio.
With two 802.11ac radios, a powerful integrated controller,
application-level intelligence, automated provisioning,
and cloud management (optional), the XR-600 delivers
robust wireless connectivity in areas of low-to-medium user density.
This Guide covers the steps required to install the XR-600 on a ceiling or wall and connect and
start the AP. For detailed configuration information, see the Wireless Array User's Guide.
You Need the Following Items
Power and Ethernet connection(s) to your wired network using Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables. The
XR-600 Series has two Gigabit Ethernet ports:
GIGABIT1/PoE+—This port powers the AP via Power over Gigabit Ethernet (PoGE)
over a Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable that also carries data traffic. Power is provided by an 802.3at
PoE+ compliant switch or a Xirrus-supplied PoGE injector—the 30W XP1-MSI-30, or
current models rated at 70W or higher. If using an injector, you must provide a data
connection from the switch to the injector as well as another cable from the injector's
OUT port to the GIGABIT1/PoE+ port. PoGE Injectors require an AC outlet. See the
PoGE Installation Guide for more information.
(Optional) GIGABIT2—Connection to this second, data-only Gigabit port provides
additional bandwidth. Use Cat 5E or Cat 6 cable.
NOTE: The XR-600 must be connected to PoGE networks without routing cabling to the outside
plant. This ensures that cabling isn’t exposed to lightning strikes or possible crossover from
high voltage lines. Xirrus PoGE Injectors or Switches and XR-600 APs must be installed and
used indoors.
Workstation with a Web browser to configure the XR-600 via Xirrus XMS/ Mobilize or
directly via the Windows Management Interface (WMI).
Ceiling Mount—you may mount directly to a ceiling. Use two user-supplied screws that are
appropriate for the construction material of the ceiling (we recommend max screw size #8,
Pan Head type). See “Direct Mounting Template” on page 13.
Suspended Ceiling Grid Mount—you may mount directly to a 15/16” standard grid with no
accessories. For other grid types, or for easy detachment plus the ability to lock the unit in
place, use a mounting plate (XE-500-MOUNT, below). You also need T-Bar clips (ordered

separately) or a T-Bar Bracket (XE-500-T-BARX; for slotted ceiling grid, T-slot bolts are
available on request for attaching T-Bar Bracket to slots in grid).
(Optional) The following accessory kits may be used for ceiling or wall mount.
The Ceiling Mount Kit contains a mounting plate, locking plate, locking slug, and three
screws (1/4” Plastite). The Wall Mount Kit contains a mounting plate, wall mount bracket,
locking slug, and three screws (1/4” Plastite).
You need a 7/16” nut driver to attach the mounting plate to the bracket or clips. (See “Install
Mounting Hardware and XR-600” on page 3.) Note that you cannot use old T-bar clips from
XN or XS Arrays with the XR Series. Identify new clips by their white studs - don't use old
clips whose studs aren't white.
For a locked installation, supply a zip-tie, small lock, or other locking hardware.
Phillips head screwdriver (to attach the wall mounting plate or ceiling locking plate to the
XR-600 mounting plate).
Choose a Suitable Location
The XR-600 can be installed on the ceiling or on a wall or may be placed on a shelf.
Choose a location that is central to your users. Refer to the Wireless Array User's Guide.
The location must be capable of supporting the weight of the XR-600 and the mounting
bracket (about 2 pounds total).
For optimal placement, we recommend that a predictive survey be performed by a qualified
Xirrus partner.
Maintain a distance of at least 50 feet between additional Wireless APs.

Keep the unit away from electrical devices or appliances that generate RF noise-at least 3 to
6 feet (1 to 2 meters).
Install the Locking Slug (Optional)
If you are using a mounting kit and you wish to secure (lock) the XR-600 to its mounting plate
after it is installed on the ceiling or wall, complete the following steps:
1. Insert the locking slug (provided in the accessory kit) into
the slot on the back of the XR-600 chassis as shown here:
Note the orientation of the bubble on the locking slug. It should
be facing toward the label at the bottom of the XR-600.
2. Push the slug in until it clicks in place.
When you attach a ceiling locking plate or wall mounting bracket to
the XR-600 mounting plate and install the XR-600, the hole in the
top of the locking slug will align with the hole on the tab in the
locking plate or wall bracket.
You can then use a customer-supplied zip tie, lock, or other locking
hardware to permanently secure the AP to the mounting plate.
Install Mounting Hardware and XR-600
The XR-600 can be installed directly on a normal ceiling or on a standard 15/16” suspended
ceiling grid as described in the next section:
4A-Direct Ceiling or Grid Mount without Mounting Plate
Use one of the optional mounting brackets if you wish a more secure mounting, the ability to
lock the AP in place, or an easy to dismount and remount installation. Kits are available for
ceiling, wall, or grid mount, as described in these sections:

4A-Direct Ceiling or Grid Mount without Mounting Plate
Suspended Ceiling Grid:
You may attach the XR-600 directly to a 15/16”
ceiling grid without using a mounting plate. There
are two ceiling grid tabs on the back of the XR-600,
indicated in blue in the photo. Simply twist these
onto the ceiling grid and proceed to Step 5 on page 9.
Direct Ceiling Mount:
To attach the XR-600 directly to the ceiling, use the
mounting holes on the back of the XR-600, indicated
in red in the photo.
You need two screws of an appropriate type for the
construction material at the mounting site. We
suggest max screw size #8, Pan Head type.
NOTE: The XR-600 must not be disassembled - do not remove the back of the AP to tighten the
screws after mounting.
1. Mark the location for the two mounting screws-3.5” (8.9 cm) apart, on center. You may
use the “Direct Mounting Template” on page 13.
2. Install two screws in the ceiling so that they protrude 1/8” (.32 cm) between the
mounting surface and the head of the screw.
3. Align the holes in the back of the XR-600 over the screws protruding from the ceiling.
Push the XR-600 chassis up on the screw heads and rotate the XR-600 to the right until it
locks on the screw heads.
4. Proceed to“Connect the Cables” on page 9.
4B-Suspended Ceiling Grid Mount with Mounting Plate
The following steps use a mounting plate, which offers ease of
dismount and a locking option for the AP.
NOTE: Steps 1 and 2 are only required if you wish to lock the XR-
600 to its mounting plate after it is installed.
1. Align the three holes in the locking plate over the
corresponding three holes in the XR-600 mounting plate.

2. Use the three screws provided in the accessory kit to attach
the locking plate to the XR-600 mounting plate as shown.
NOTE: Use only the screws provided in the accessory kit. Other
screws that may appear equivalent in size may damage the XR-
600 mounting plate.
3. If using a T-Bar bracket for a standard ceiling grid, just twist
the built-in clips onto the grid with the bolts facing down. For
a slotted grid, slide the T-bolt heads into the grid's slot (easiest
to do at an intersection), position them for the two holes in the
T-Bar Bracket, and twist bolts till snug in the slot. Secure
bracket with nuts, bolts pointing down.
Attach the Mounting Plate to bracket with supplied nuts. Skip
the next 2 steps.
4. If using T-Bar clips, use the four holes on the XR-600
mounting plate to mark the placement of the four T-bar clips
on the metal ceiling support grid.
NOTE: You MUST use the mounting studs furnished with the T-
BAR accessory kit. You cannot use old T-bar clips from XN or XS
Arrays with the XR Series. The new clips have studs that are
painted white—don’t use old clips that have studs that are not
white.

Connect the Cables
The XR-600 receives power and data on the GIGABIT1/PoE+
port.
If you have not already done so, cut an access hole for
the cable in the ceiling or wall and draw the cable(s) through.
GIGABIT1/PoE+: Only compatible Xirrus-supplied power
injectors, or 802.3at PoE-compliant switches, may be used to
power the XR-600.
Connect the cable that carries power and data to this port. If you are using a Xirrus-supplied
injector, its CONNECT LED should light (for 30W and higher injectors, it is OK if it blinks).
If power is being properly supplied to the XR-600, the LEDs on its front will light and then
commence blinking in their boot pattern.
GIGABIT2: (Optional) An additional data connection may be plugged into this port.
5. Cut an access hole for the cable in the wall and draw the
cable(s) through.
6. Align the two slots in the back of the XR-600 chassis shown
here with the corresponding tabs in the XR-600 mounting
plate.
7. Push the XR-600 chassis up on the mounting plate tabs and

Zero-Touch Provisioning and Ongoing Management
Most customers employ the Xirrus Management System (XMS) for the initial setup and
continuing management of Xirrus devices. XMS users can readily set up their new devices for
zero-touch provisioning and ongoing maintenance via the following platforms.
XMS Cloud Next Generation (XMS-CL-9500-x)
XMS in the cloud performs zero-touch provisioning as shown in this quick video guide:
http://www.xirrus.com/TV/Training/XMS-Cloud-Next-Generation. Your new APs
appear in XMS even before you receive your equipment. When the email arrives with your
login information, use XMS Cloud to specify the initial settings for your APs. A Guided
Tour will walk you through the basic steps of creating a profile containing configuration
settings, including creating SSIDs and firewall/application control rules. Once the installed
AP has Internet connectivity, it will automatically contact Xirrus for cloud-based zero-touch
provisioning per your settings, install the latest applicable license, and upgrade the AP to
the latest software version as appropriate.
XMS Enterprise
(Also available as a cloud-deployed solution: XMS-9000-CL-x) This platform automatically
detects and provisions new Xirrus devices deployed in your network via a similar zero-
touch provisioning approach. Create and configure a default profile for newly added APs -
these new devices will automatically receive the configuration defined in your default
profile.
If you are not using XMS, new devices can be auto-provisioned via the Xirrus Mobilize
platform (pre-order required) as shown in this video: http://www.xirrus.com/TV/Training/
Mobilize-Training. Your welcome email will contain login/account information.
If you are not using XMS or Mobilize, please see the ArrayOS User Guide to configure your AP
manually via the Express Setup menu option. The User Guide is available from http://
support.xirrus.com (login required). Select the Libraries tab and click the ArrayOS - XR Platform
Latest Release link.
