1. FOREWORD
This operating and installation manual contains installation and operating instructions for the Xpelair
Xcell 350V EC BP Whole house heat recovery unit.
READ THIS MANUAL CAREFULLY BEFORE PUTTING THE UNIT INTO OPERATION.
This manual contains all the information and instructions necessary for optimum installation of the Xcell
350V EC BP. It serves also as a manual for maintenance and after-sales service work.
The unit is subject to ongoing improvement and further development. It is therefore possible that your
unit differs slightly from the description here.
We wish you years of comfort and pleasure with your Xcell 350V EC BP.
NOTE: This manual has been produced with the greatest care and attention. However, no rights can be
derived from this. We reserve the right to change the contents of this manual, in whole or in part, at any
time without prior notification.
The Rating plate is located on the top face of the Xcell 350V EC BP.
2. SAFETY
2.1 General Safety Regulations
• Observe the safety regulations and warnings contained in this manual at all times. Failure to do so
may result in damage to the unit or personal injury.
• This appliance is intended for connection to fixed wiring
• Installations and wiring must conform to current IEE Regulations (UK), local or appropriate regulations
(other countries)
• All installations must be supervised by a qualified electrician.
• Store this manual in the vicinity of the unit at all times.
• The instructions on periodic cleaning and/or changing of the filters, the air inlet/outlet valves and the
air inlet/outlet grilles must be strictly observed.
• The proper response of the safety functions and precautions must be checked at regular intervals.
Modifications to the unit are not permitted.
The unit may only be connected to a 230 V AC power supply!
2.2 Safety Precautions, Safety Measures
• It must not be possible to touch the fan wheels with your hand. The unit may therefore only be
operated with the duct system connected. The minimum duct length is 900mm. The unit cannot be
opened without the use of tools.
3. FOR THE USER
3.1 Definitions
3.1.1 Balanced ventilation with heat recovery
The most healthy and energy-efficient form of ventilation is balanced ventilation. A balanced ventilation
system is one that extracts contaminated air from kitchen, bathroom, toilet(s) and, where necessary,
also the utility room, and supplies the same volume of fresh air to the living room and bedrooms. Gaps
under the doors ensure a good through-flow in the dwelling. The air circulation is literally in balance.
Ensure these gaps are never obstructed by draught excluders or deep-pile carpet, for example.
The system will then no longer function (optimally).
Besides ensuring a healthy balance between incoming and outgoing air, the Xcell 350V EC BP also
transfers heat from extracted air to the fresh, usually colder, outside air that it supplies. In this way,
roughly 95% of the extracted heat is recovered, ensuring the air remains at room temperature.
Furthermore, draughts will be a thing of the past.
3.1.2 Bypass
The bypass ensures heat transfer between extracted and supplied air is (temporarily) deactivated. This
means that colder outside air is not preheated prior to entering the dwelling.

By allowing colder outside air in at night, the indoor temperature of the dwelling can be kept low during
hot days.
The bypass works automatically. All you have to do is enter your comfort temperature in as described
in section 3.3 ‘switch setting options’. The Xcell 350V EC BP will work to the temperature set.
During the winter, ensure that the comfort temperature is not lower than your desired
temperature. If this is the case, it may result in the heating being on and the bypass being open.
This is energy wastage.
3.1.3 Frost protection
In periods of moderate to heavy frosts, the heat exchanger must be protected against frost-damage.
The Xcell 350V EC BP is fitted as standard with an automatic frost-protection system that temporarily
reduces the outside air supply.
A pre-heater is optional, giving the advantage of ensuring balanced ventilation at all times. This option
also offers greater comfort as the supplied air is pre-heated to virtually the inside temperature.
3.2 Operation options
3.2.1 Display

The 3-speed switch (below) can be fitted to the Xcell 350V EC BP to select the desired ventilation
setting.

3.3 Switching and setting options
3.3.1 Ventilation volume
Using the switch shown, the Xcell 350V EC BP is adjustable in the following three ventilation positions:
Position 1 - To be used in the event of absence. Ventilation at the minimum required volume
Position 2 - Normal position.
Position 3 - High position. Use this position for cooking and showering and whenever extra ventilation
is required.
The current position is shown on the unit’s display.
• The current ventilation position cannot be altered on the Xcell 350V EC BP display, but only using the
switch.
• After cooking and showering, keep the Xcell 350V EC BP in the highest setting for a little while to
ensure the rapid extraction of surplus moisture and odours; refer also to ‘time delay’ on the following
page.
3.3.2 Comfort temperature
This is the temperature at which the bypass is regulated. Set this to your desired temperature. The
Xcell 350V EC BP will work to the temperature set.
• Regulation occurs automatically. If the outside temperature is too high (e.g. during the day), the
bypass will not be activated.
Setting comfort temperature:
• Press button for 2 sec.
• The current comfort temperature is shown in the display
• Set the desired temperature using the or buttons.
• Press to confirm the chosen temperature.
The Xcell 350V EC BP will now show the current ventilation position again
3.3.3 Supply off
On warm summer days, windows and/or doors are often left open. In principle, automatic supply is then
not needed. Once the supply feature is switched off, your Xcell 350V EC BP operates as an extractor
fan.
Set supply off:
• Press button for 2 sec. and the supply fan is switched off.
• You have deactivated the balanced ventilation and heat recovery functions. Switch them back on as
soon as it gets colder in order to prevent energy wastage and unnecessary expense.
• Press button for 2 sec. and the supply fan is switched on again. The balanced ventilation and
heat/cold recovery functions (with opened bypass) are again available.
3.3.4 Dirty filter alarm
The Xcell 350V EC BP filters both air flows (supplied and extracted air). The filters must be regularly
cleaned or replaced.
In this event, the alarm symbol ‘FiL’ ‘tEr’ will flash in the display.
Filter contamination rates depend on where you live. You can set this in the P24 menu:
‘normal’ (setting 0)
‘rural’ (setting 1)
‘urban’ (setting 2)
The ‘FiL’ ‘tEr’ alarm is displayed earlier for the ‘urban setting, followed by the ‘normal’ setting and then
the ‘rural’ setting.
Setting the dirty filter alarm:
Menu P24:
• Press the [menu] button
• Press the [ok] button

• Press the button until ‘P24’ is shown in the display
• Press the [ok] button
• Using the or button, select the desired position
• Confirm this with [ok]
• Press the [menu] button twice
The current ventilation position will now be displayed.
3.3.5 Time delays
To make the Xcell 350V EC BP more user-friendly, the unit can be set to the highest position using a
time delay switch that then switches the unit off again after a given period of time so you are not
required to keep walking back and forth to the switch. This function is particularly useful after cooking
and showering.
Depending on the position switch type fitted, the following options are available:
P21 and P22:
Only for an Xcell 350V EC BP with a corded switch and only if your installation is fitted with a second
switch in the bathroom.
P21: activation delay: ‘x’ minutes after being turned on, the unit switches to the high position.
‘x’ is adjustable from 0 - 15 min.
P22: deactivation delay: ‘x’ minutes after being turned on, the Xcell 350V EC BP returns to the position
at which the switch is at that moment. ‘x’ is adjustable from 0 - 120 min.
If P21 has been set to 0, the Xcell 350V EC BP will go directly to the high position for the time set at
P22.
P23:
Only applicable to installations with a corded switch.
If position 3 is briefly activated (< 3 sec.), then the unit will stay in position 3 for ‘x’ minutes and then
returns to the position the switch is on at that moment.
If the position switch is operated within the set time ‘x’, then the unit goes immediately to the set
position. ‘x’ is adjustable from 0 - 120 min. “When this function is activated, “T3” will be shown in the
Xcell 350V EC BP display.
Setting example menu P2(..):
• Press the [menu] button
• Press the [ok] button
• Press the button until ‘P2(…) is shown in the display
• Press the [ok] button
• Using the or button, select the desired time ‘x’
• Confirm this with [ok]
• Press the [menu] button twice
The current ventilation position will now be displayed.

3.4 Maintenance for the user
3.4.1 Cleaning/replacing a filter
3.4.2 Cleaning a filter
• Electrically isolate the Xcell 350V EC BP
• Remove the Front Cover (A) from the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Remove filters (B) from the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Clean the filters with a vacuum cleaner or, if moist: rinse them clean in lukewarm water with a neutral
soap solution.
• Put the filters back into the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Refit the Front Cover.
• Switch the power back on to the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Press if ‘Fil’, ‘ter’ is flashing on the display.
3.4.3 Replacing a filter
Replace the filters at least once a year.
• Electrically isolate the Xcell 350V EC BP
• Remove the Front Cover (A) from the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Remove filters (B) from the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Remove the two clamps used to fasten the filter material on the filter holders. The filter material can
now be removed from the holder.
• The new filter material can now be placed on the holder. Remount the two clamps.
• Put the filters back into the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Refit the Front Cover.
• Switch the power back on to the Xcell 350V EC BP.
• Press if ‘Fil’, ‘ter’ is flashing on the display.
Take care that the material is not damaged by the edges of the filter holder.
When using the system for the first time, we recommend cleaning all filters and valves as the system
may become clogged with dust during construction.

3.4.4 Cleaning air valves
Clean the valves twice a year.
• Remove a valve from the wall or ceiling.
• Clean the valve in soapy warm water, Rinse well and dry. The installer will have set all the valves to
ensure the optimum functioning of the system. Do not therefore adjust the position of the valves.
• Place the valve back in its correct location.
• Repeat this procedure for all the valves.
Ventilation air is supplied and extracted via the valves. Gaps under doors in the dwelling ensure that
the air flows in the right direction.
• Do not obstruct these gaps.
• To maintain the correct amount of ventilation in the correct rooms, the valve setting must not be
altered. Also make sure that the valves do not get swapped.
3.5 Malfunctions
3.5.1 Malfunction alarm
If the Xcell 350V EC BP malfunctions, this will be indicated in the following manner:

The display will show an ‘A’ or an ‘E’ code with a number
3.5.3 What to do in the event of a malfunction
In the event of a malfunction, contact the installer. Note the code shown in the display and the Product
number. This is given on the rating plate on the top of the unit.
The unit should not be electrically isolated unless it has to be deactivated due to a serious malfunction,
or for filter cleaning/replacement or any other urgent reason. When the unit is isolated, the dwelling will
no longer enjoy mechanical ventilation, and this can lead to problems with damp and mould. Protracted
deactivation of the unit must therefore be prevented.
3.6 End of useful life
Consult with your supplier what you should do with the Xcell 350V EC BP at the end of its useful life.
The statutory regulations in force at the time must be observed.
4. OPERATION AND SPECIFICATIONS
4.1 Balanced ventilation
Abalanced ventilation system consists of:
• Outside air (B) and extraction of stale air (A).
• Xcell 350V EC BP heat recovery unit (C).
• Supply valves in the bedrooms and living rooms (D).
• Exhaust valves in the kitchen, bathroom, toilet and, if required, in the storeroom (E).
• Non-powered extractor hood with switch (F).

4.2 Heat recovery unit
• External coated-plate casing (H)
• Interior of high-quality (expanded) polypropylene (E)PP (not visible, internal).
• 4 connections for ducting (I).
• 2 G4 filters for air purification (J).
• 2 energy-efficient DC motors with high-yield fan (not visible, internal).
• Counter-flow exchanger (heat exchanger) with a thermal yield of more than 95% (not visible, internal).
• Operating panel with read-out for display of data and for setting procedures (K).
• Identification plate (L).
• Condensation drain (M).
• Air connection label (N).
• The Standard Xcell 350V EC BP is for right-oriented air connections to the dwelling. Left handed
versions are also available.
4.3 Heat recovery
• Polluted air is extracted from the kitchen, toilet and shower (A).
• The heat exchanger (B) extracts heat from the exhaust air.
• Fresh outside air is sucked in (C).
• The heat exchanger (B) heats the incoming air without allowing the two airflows to come into contact
with each other.
• The fresh, warm air is supplied to the living room and bedrooms (D).
• The HR (High Yield) counter-flow heat exchanger (B) has such a high thermal yield that extra heating
of the supply air is no longer necessary.

The balanced ventilation system contributes to energy savings, a healthy interior climate, optimum
living environment, and prevents damp problems.
4.4 Bypass
The Xcell 350V EC BP is fitted with an automatic 100% bypass.
If the ‘bypass’ (E) is activated, then all exhaust air is conducted around the exchanger. The heat
recovery function is then switched off. Cool, fresh air is then supplied to the dwelling, while the warm
(stale) inside air is extracted. This allows for the use of night air to cool the house in the summer. This
so-called ‘free cooling’ is switched on automatically according to the selected comfort temperature on
the display. The Xcell 350V EC BP will work to the temperature set.
The bypass function can only be used in the warmer seasons; the so-called summer operation. This
largely prevents the bypass from staying open during the winter months when the heating is on.

4.5 Frost protection
The inside air transfers its heat to the outside air within the heat exchanger. This cooling process can
create condensation in the heat exchanger. In periods of moderate to heavy frosts, the heat exchanger
must therefore be protected against frost-damage. The Xcell 350V EC BP is fitted as standard with a
fully automatic frost-protection system; an optional pre-heater may also be fitted. This is also regulated
fully automatically.
4.5.1 Standard frost protection
The Xcell 350V EC BP is fitted as standard with a frost-protection system that temporarily reduces the
outside air supply. This is done by reducing the speed of the intake fan. In the event of extreme cold,
the intake fan can be completely deactivated.
The frost protection system is regulated according to outside temperature, exhaust temperature and
time. The speed of the intake fan is reduced gradually so as not to cause discomfort to the user.
