3 UNPACKING AND INSTALLATION
3.1 Unpacking and installing the SDA
stand
The two standard basic components of the SDA
stand are supplied packed in two packages.
The SDA base plate is separately packed.
The package containing the double boom
additionally includes:
− SDA column
− Double boom with rotating/tilting head and
column 32
− Vertical adjustment retainer ring
− Screws, lever and tools
• For the installation of the SDA stand, remove all
components from the packaging (verify that all
components are present).
CAUTION
When unpacking and installing the
base plate, consider that it has a
weight of approx. 30 kg.
Two persons are needed to screw the column into
the base plate:
• One person should hold the base plate (up end)
and the column and align these parts to each
other.
• The second person should screw the column
(3-1/1) onto the base plate (3-1/2) with
mounting screw (M16, 3-1/3) using an Allen key
(SW 14 mm). The mounting screw should be
fastened tightly.
• Erect base plate with column and put it onto a
stable support.

• Slip vertical adjustment retainer ring (3-2/4) over
column (3-2/5) and clamp it tightly at the
desired height using clamp lever (3-2/3).
The angular position of the clamp lever
can be set to a position that is
favorable for the clamping procedure.
To this end, push the lever axially in
the direction of the column until it
comes out of the click stop and turn it
into the desired angular position. After
releasing the lever, it will automatically
snap in again by a spring mechanism.
CAUTION
The double boom has a weight of
approx. 15 kg; call on a second person
for help, if necessary.
• Slip the double boom (3-2/2), aligned axially,
over the column and let it rest on the retainer
ring.
If the object to be examined shall be located underneath the double boom, install the
rotating/tilting head and column 32 pointing downward.
For the horizontal observation of high located objects, the double boom may also be used
turned about (rotating/tilting head and column 32 pointing up).
• Screw clamp screw (3-2/1) into double boom and tighten it.

3.2 Installing Stemi mount and
microscope body
• Loosen clamp lever (3-3/2) on rotating/tilting
head (3-3/1).
• Align column 32 (3-3/3) vertically and retighten
the clamp lever.
The angular position of the clamp lever
on the rotating/tilting head may be
varied analogously to the clamp lever
of the retainer ring.
• Unscrew end piece (3-3/6) from column 32
(3-3/3).
• Slip Stemi mount (3-3/5) from the bottom over
column 32 and fix it in the desired position by
means of clamp knob (3-3/4).
With a short working distance of the
supplementary lens system / objective,
you may also slip the Stemi mount
turned about over the column 32 to
increase the spacing to the object and
the base plate.
• If available, slip the fiber holder over and clamp
it.
• Screw the end piece back into column 32.
CAUTION
Before inserting the microscope body make sure that its objective does not collide with the base
plate or the mounting surface of the stand when inserting it. Change the vertical adjustment of
the double boom and the retainer ring, if necessary.
• Insert the microscope body (3-3/8) into the 76 mm wide mounting hole of the Stemi mount (3-3/5)
and fix clamp screw (3-3/7) by means of the SW 3 ball-headed screwdriver.

OPERATION
Carl Zeiss SDA Stand for Stereomicroscopes
12 B 46-0075 e 05/06
4 OPERATION
The SDA stand allows the working position of the used microscope body to be adapted to large-size or
voluminous objects to be examined.
The following adjustments are possible:
− Vertical adjustment of the double boom on the stand column (approx. 425 mm), see Section 4.1
− Longitudinal adjustment of the double boom (approx. 330 mm), see Section 4.2
− Boom rotation about the stand column (360°), see Section 4.3
− Rotation of column 32 in the rotating/tilting head (approx. 330°), see Section 4.4
− Inclination of column 32 in the rotating/tilting head (approx. 90°), see Section 4.5
CAUTION
The retainer ring (4-1/4) must always be clamped directly under the double boom (4-1/8)! The
clamps of retainer ring (4-1/4) and double boom (4-1/1) may only be released in turn;
otherwise, the double boom will slip down unsecured involving the risk of injury to the operator
or damage to the microscope and the object to be examined.
4.1 Vertical adjustment of the double boom
Vertical adjustment, upward:
• Make sure the retainer ring (4-1/4) is clamped. If not, tighten clamp lever (4-1/3).
• Loosen clamp screw (4-1/1) and push the double boom up into the desired position.
• Retighten the clamp screw (4-1/1).
• Hold retainer ring (4-1/4) tight, release clamp lever (4-1/3) and push the retainer ring up until it
touches the double boom.
• Retighten clamp lever (4-1/3).
Vertical adjustment, downward:
CAUTION
Before any downward vertical adjustment check how far the double boom can be moved
downward without the microscope colliding with the mounting surface, the base plate or the
object to be examined.
• Make sure the double boom is clamped; if not, tighten clamp screw (4-1/1).
• Release clamp lever (4-1/3) and push retainer ring (4-1/4) down into the desired position.

4.3 Boom rotation about the stand column
CAUTION
The retainer ring (4-1/4) must always be clamped directly under the double boom (4-1/8)! The
clamps of retainer ring (4-1/3) and double boom (4-1/1) may only be released in turn;
otherwise, the double boom will slip down unsecured involving the risk of injury to the operator
or damage to the microscope and the object to be examined.
• Push the retainer ring (4-1/4) under the double boom (4-1/8) and clamp it tightly (4-1/3).
• Loosen the boom rotation clamp screw (4-1/1) and swivel the double boom to the desired position.
CAUTION
Take care to prevent any collision with persons, the object to be examined or any other
surrounding objects. Besides, take into account the length and guides of the optical fiber.
• Retighten the boom rotation clamp screw (4-1/1).
4.4 Rotation of column 32 in the rotating/tilting head
CAUTION
Before turning the column check how far you can turn the column without the microscope
colliding with the double boom.
• Loosen the clamp screw (4-1/6) on the rotating/tilting head (4-1/7).
• Rotate column 32 with Stemi mount and microscope into the desired position.

4.5 Inclination of column 32 in the rotating/tilting head
CAUTION
Before inclining the column 32, check how far it can be inclined without the microscope
colliding with the double boom, the object to be examined or the mounting surface or base
plate. Move the double boom up before, if necessary.
• Loosen clamp lever (4-1/5) on rotating/tilting head (4-1/7).
• Incline column 32 with Stemi mount and microscope into the desired position.
• Retighten the clamp lever (4-1/5).
When zooming with the microscope, the object feature in the image center will remain there
if the microscope axis is perpendicular to the object surface. In general, this requirement will
not be met after the column 32 was inclined. In this case, the image will be shifted up or
down while zooming.
