Troubleshooting & Maintenance 1
1. Overview
The Walk Through Metal Detector (WTMD) mainly detects whether the pedestrian is carrying metallic, prohibited or
dangerous items for security and safety purpose. At present, our company’s WTMD products are suitable for all the
low, medium and high-end markets. The products, listed in the order from low to high-end, are ZK-D1010S, ZK-
D1065S, ZK-D2180S, ZK-D3180S, ZK-D4330, PD-300.
2. Product Information
2.1 Product features
ZKTeco’s Walk Through Metal Detector is designed based on the electromagnetic principle and is widely used in
security checkpoints. The technical principle of each type of WTMD is the same. There is no difference in terms of
the structure as well. The main difference is the function of the control unit and the coil in the door plank. The
ability of the control unit to process information varies; technical parameters of each type of WTMD are different.
When the infrared light emitted by a pair of infrared sensor is blocked, the control unit will start to check if the data
of each acquisition board changes. If there is any change, the alarm light bar representing the area where the
change locates will light up. If there is no any change, it will not trigger the alarm.
2.2 Product introduction (Take ZK-D4330 as an example)
ZK-D4330 is a high performance WTMD with advanced micro-processing technology and digital pulse technology.
It has high detection sensitivity, anti-interference feature as well as stable performance.

2)If the buzzer is correctly connected, replace the buzzer;
3)Replace the control unit if the false alarm issue persists;
4)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.1.4 After the self-check, the alarm indicator doesn’t function normally
1)Check the cable connection;
2)If the connection is perfect, replace the LED indicator;
3)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.2 Malfunctions in operations of the device
4.2.1 The remote controller doesn’t work
1)Ensure that the battery of the remote controller is fully charged;
2)Alternatively, replace the battery;
3)Replace the control unit if the above doesn’t help;
4)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.2.2 Screen buttons do not function properly
1)If you have pressed all the screen buttons yet there is no response, check the control unit to see if there is
anything abnormal;
2)If everything is perfectly fine, but the problem persists, replace the control unit;
3)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.2.3 Counting error
1)Check to see if the infrared sensor is damaged;

Troubleshooting & Maintenance 5
2)If the infrared sensor works normally, but the problem persists, replace the control unit;
3)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.2.4 Unable to update the parameters
1)Enter the menu to change the parameter;
2)If all settings are not effective, replace the control unit;
3)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.3 Malfunctions in inspection functioning
4.3.1 Passengers with no metallic or suspicious items trigger the alarm
Possible cause(s): the sensitivity may be too high; or there may be strong interference
Troubleshooting:
1)Eliminate large metallic objects in the surroundings or anything that may cause strong interference, or,
change the installation location;
2)Reduce the sensitivity;
3)Remove devices with the same frequency nearby;
4)Make sure that the location of the WTMD is stable without severe vibration;
5)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.

6Troubleshooting & Maintenance
4.3.2 No alarm when a passenger carrying suspicious articles is walking through
the detector
Possible cause(s): the sensitivity may be too low; the infrared sensor might be damaged; the control unit may
not be working normally
Troubleshooting:
1)Check whether the connection wire between the main engine and the door plate is attached properly;
2)Adjust the sensitivity;
3)Check if the infrared sensor is fine; if there is a sensor damaged, replace it;
4)If everything is perfectly fine, but the problem persists, replace the control unit;
5)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.3.3 The WTMD failed to detect the metallic items being carried
Possible cause(s): This issue may occur when the object being carried is at the threshold of the detection
sensitivity of the security checkpoint.
Troubleshooting:
1)Set a higher sensitivity value. Generally, if there is not strong interference, sensitivity adjustment will tackle the
problem;
2)If the problem persists, it is recommended to change the installation location of the WTMD or eliminate any
on-site interference (such as the electrical control box, inverter welding machine, radio frequency equipment,
and so on). The location must be changed, so that metallic objects as small as a coin could be detected.
4.3.4 False alarm occurs, and the LED failed to correctly indicate the detection zone
where the suspicious article located
Possible cause(s): the disturbance in the surrounding environment is serious; or multiple machines being
installed side-by-side are using the same frequency; or the sensitivity for metal detection in a detection zone is
lowe r o r highe r than the zon es next to it.
Troubleshooting:

Troubleshooting & Maintenance 7
1)Check to see if the connection cable is perfectly attached.
2)Cover the infrared tube with an opaque tape to see whether the system triggers the alarm or not; if it does,
the cause of the problem is the interference. You may gradually reduce the sensitivity of all or part of the
detection zones until the alarm stops.
3)Adjust the sensitivity of all detection zones: increase the sensitivity of the zone which is failed to locate the
suspicious items, and reduce that of the zone which triggers false alarm;
4)Avoid using the same frequency when multiple devices are used side-by-side.
5)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
4.3.5 The number of people passing through and alarm events are not counted
Possible cause(s): there is infrared interference; or the infrared sensor is broken; or the control unit does not
function properly
Troubleshooting:
1)Check the cable connection;
2)Check whether there is infrared interference near the infrared tube located near the left and right doors.
Possible items that may generate such interference include an infrared camera, an infrared remote control
(when someone pressing the button on it), sunlight etc;
3)Check whether the infrared sensor is broken, if yes, please replace it;

8Troubleshooting & Maintenance
4)If everything is perfectly fine, but the problem persists, replace the control unit;
5)Contact the relevant technical personnel if the above doesn’t solve the problem.
5. Maintenance (Take ZK-D4330 as an example)
5.1 Clean the surface of the machine regularly
Use a smooth cleaning cloth with some industrial alcohol to clean the surface of the control unit, crossbars, and the
surfaces of the entire device.
5.2 Replacement of the control unit
When the performance of the WTMD is abnormal, and when you confirm that it is the control unit causing
problems after troubleshooting, you need to replace it following the steps below.
①Remove the crossbar at the front, then pull the signal cable out.
②Hold the control unit with one hand, then remove the two bolts at the back of it with another hand. Separate
the crossbar at the front and the control unit.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance 9
Note: Please carefully pull the connection cable out from the hole, as illustrated below.
③Remove the two screws at the back of the control unit then remove the metal plate.
④Install a new control unit, attach it with the metal plate, tighten the screws, and put it back to the crossbar.
5.3 Replacement of an infrared sensor
When the WTMD is failed to count the number of alarm events and people walking through the detector, or when
the WTMD does not activate the alarm as needed, there might be something wrong with the infrared sensors. To
replace the infrared sensor, please follow the steps below.
①Remove the two screws from the sensor, then gently remove the infrared sensor from the WTMD with a slotted
screwdriver;
②Slowly turn and pull the connection cable out from the sensor.
Note: There are two cables for a transmitter, and three cables for a receiver.
