ZyXEL warrants to the original end user (purchaser) that this product is free from
any defects in materials or workmanship for a period of up to two years from the
date of purchase. During the warranty period, and upon proof of purchase, should
the product have indications of failure due to faulty workmanship and/or materials,
ZyXEL will, at its discretion, repair or replace the defective products or
components without charge for either parts or labor, and to whatever extent it shall
deem necessary to restore the product or components to proper operating
condition. Any replacement will consist of a new or re-manufactured functionally
equivalent product of equal value, and will be solely at the discretion of ZyXEL.
This warranty shall not apply if the product is modified, misused, tampered with,
damaged by an act of God, or subjected to abnormal working conditions.

Repair or replacement, as provided under this warranty, is the exclusive remedy of
the purchaser. This warranty is in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied,
including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular use or
purpose. ZyXEL shall in no event be held liable for indirect or consequential
damages of any kind of character to the purchaser.

Products must be returned Postage Prepaid. It is recommended that the unit be
insured when shipped. Any returned products without proof of purchase or those
with an out-dated warranty will be repaired or replaced (at the discretion of ZyXEL)
and the customer will be billed for parts and labor. All repaired or replaced
products will be shipped by ZyXEL to the corresponding return address, Postage
Paid (USA and territories only). If the customer desires some other return
destination beyond the U.S. borders, the customer shall bear the cost of the return
shipment. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have
other rights that vary from state to state.

1 Unpacking Information
Thank you for purchasing the PES-100 Phoneline Ethernet Switch. Before you
start, please check the contents in the package.

2 Introduction
2.1 General Description
The PES-100 is a powerful and innovative phoneline networking switch with
twelve 1 Mbps phoneline networking ports and two 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet
ports. It is ideal for delivering a dedicated 1 Mbps bandwidth for each attached
phoneline networking device.
The 1 Mbps phoneline networking is a new technology that provides network
connectivity over existing telephone wires without any impact on the voice service.
With a rich set of management features, you can easily manage the switch by any
SNMP manager or web browser. This is useful for system administrators to
remotely manage and monitor the connections. The user-friendly graphical
interface makes the management as straightforward as possible.
The switch’s store-and-forward architecture provides low latency and filters the
error, including runt and CRC error, packets. The switch is also fully compliant
with all network protocols. Moreover, the LED indicators on the front-panel allow
you to monitor the operating status of the individual ports and the system as a
whole.
For network connections, you can use the following types of cables:
· Category 3, 4 or 5 UTP for 10Base-T
· Category 5 UTP for 100Base-TX
· Telephone twisted-pair wires for 1 Mbps phoneline networking

2.3 The Front Panel
The front panel of the switch is shown below.

2.3.1 Power LED
This green indicator is on when power is applied.
2.3.2 Port LEDs
Port LED indicators on the front panel show the operating status of each port.
2.3.2.1 Phoneline Networking Ports
Each phoneline networking ports has two LED indicators.
Link LED
A steady green Link LED indicates that the link is up and ready. If the port is
connected but the Link LED is off, check the following items:
Ø Power to the switch and the connected device is on.
Ø The cable is firmly seated in the port of the switch and in the connected
device.
Ø The cable is good and of the correct type.
Ø The connected device is functioning.
Activity LED
The Activity LED blinks when the port is transmitting data.

Each Fast Ethernet port has three LED indicators:
Speed LED
The Speed LED. indicates the current speed of the Fast Ethernet port. The LED is
on when the speed is 100 Mbps; it is off when the speed is 10 Mbps.
Link/Activity LED
The Link/Activity LED .is steadily on (Link State) when the link is up and ready. A
blinking LED (activity) indicates traffic is going through the port. If a port is
connected but the Link/Activity LED is off, check the following items:
Ø Power to the switch and the connected device is on.
Ø The cable is firmly seated in the port of the switch and in the connected
device.
Ø The cable is good and of the correct type.
Ø The connected device is functioning.
FDX/COL LED
The amber FDX/COL LED serves two purposes: duplex mode and collisions. The
LED is steadily on when the port is running in full duplex; it is off when running in
half-duplex.
A collision occurs when two stations within a collision domain attempt to transmit
at the same time. The LED blinks when a collision is detected. Intermittent
blinking of the LED is normal; however, frequent collisions are a sign of heavy
traffic on the network.
2.3.3 Uplink Port
The uplink port is connected to the second Ethernet port internally but with the
transmit and receive pins reversed. You can use this port to connect the switch to
another Ethernet hub or switch with a straight-through cable. Alternatively, you
can use a crossover cable to connect either of the two non-uplink ports to another
switch.
2.3.4 RS-232 Console Port

The RS-232 console is used for out-of-band system management and
configuration. For the initial configuration, you need to set up the IP address and
other IP parameters for the switch through this console port. After that, you can
manage the switch through an SNMP manager or a web browser. The factory
default setting of the IP address is 192.168.1.1. You can use HyperTerminal that
comes with Windows or any other terminal emulation program. The settings of the

RS-232 port are 9600 bps, no parity, 8 data bits and 1 stop bit (n, 8, 1). The
detailed connection will be described in chapter 5.
2.4 The Rear Panel
The rear panel of the switching hub is shown next.

2.4.1 Power Receptacle
The switch is equipped with a universal power supply that accepts line power in
the range of 100~240 VAC, 50~60 Hz.
To apply power, insert the female end of the power cord firmly into the receptacle
on the rear panel of the switch and the male end into an electric outlet.

3.1 Installing Phoneline Ethernet Switch
3.1.1 Desktop Installation
For desktop installation, place the switch on a clean, flat surface close to a power
outlet.
When deciding the location of the switch, you must ensure:
n It is accessible and cables can be connected easily.
n Cabling is away from sources of electrical noise such as radios, transmitters,
broadband amplifiers, power lines and fluorescent lighting fixtures.
n Water or moisture cannot enter the unit.
n Airflow around the unit and through the vents on the sides of the case is not
restricted (a minimum of one inch clearance is recommended).
To prolong the operating life of your units:
n Never stack more than eight switches if freestanding.
n Do not obstruct the vents on the sides of the case.
3.1.2 Rack-Mount Installation
The switch can be mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack. Two mounting
brackets and screws are supplied with the switch for rack mounting.
To rack-mount the switch:
1. Disconnect all cables from the switch.
2. Place the switch on a hard, flat surface with the front facing you.
3. Place a mounting bracket over the mounting holes on one side of the switch.
4. Insert the screws and fully tighten with a screwdriver.
5. Repeat the previous two steps for the other side of the switch.
6. Insert the unit into the 19" rack and secure it with suitable screws (not
provided).
7. Reconnect all cables.
3.1.3 Installing Network Cables
3.1.3.1 Station Connections with Telephone Wires

The phoneline networking stations are connected to the switch by regular
telephone lines with RJ-11 connectors. To make the connection, insert one end of

the telephone line into one of the 1 Mbps port and the other end into the stations
network adapter.
3.1.3.2 Ethernet Connections
The Ethernet ports are for connecting the phoneline networking switch to other
devices, e.g., an Ethernet switch or a router. The general rule for Ethernet is to
use a straight-through cable between a station port and a switch port, and a
crossover cable, which may not be as readily available, between two station ports
and between two switch ports.
The two Ethernet ports on the phoneline networking switch are switch ports, while
the Uplink port is a station port. Thus, to connect to an Ethernet switch, use a
straight-through cable between the Uplink port and the Ethernet switch. An
alternative is to use a crossover cable to connect either one of the non-uplink ports
to an Ethernet switch. For a router, which should have a station port, use a
straight-through cable to connect the router to either one of the Ethernet ports on
the phoneline networking switch.

Daisy-chaining, i.e., connecting one phoneline networking switch to another in a
chain, is not recommended. Along the chain, each switch adds a certain amount
of delay and the traffic accumulates, which may adversely impact the latency and
throughput of the whole network.

4 Switch Operations
4.1 Store and Forward
The switch employs a store-and-forward architecture. The switch stores a
complete packet in an internal buffer and does the complete processing, including
error checking, before transmitting it to the network. Packets with error are
discarded, so they will not disturb the network.
4.2 MAC Address Table and Learning
The switch has a MAC (Medium Access Control) address table. The switch
remembers where a station is by storing its address information, including MAC
address, port ID, etc, in an entry of the table. This table is the base for packet
forwarding and filtering.
When a packet comes in from a port, the switch stores the source address, port ID
and other related information if the source address is not already in the table.
4.3 Forwarding and Filtering
4.4 Virtual LAN
The Virtual LAN (VLAN) feature of the phoneline networking switch is an important
security mechanism. Without VLAN, the stations on the whole network can
access one another’s shared resources, e.g., shared hard disks and printers. To
eliminate this security risk, you partition the network into different groups with
VLAN, which prevents stations in different groups from communicating with each
other directly. VLAN also limits the broadcast packets to within the groups that a
port belongs, resulting in lessening the overall traffic on the network.
For the individual subscribers, you should put each one in a separate group by
assigning one unique VLAN ID to each phoneline networking port. For the
Ethernet ports, since all phoneline networking traffic goes through them, you
should put them in all the groups, i.e., they have VLAN IDs of all the phoneline
networking ports.
After processing the source address, the switch looks up the destination address
in the MAC address table to find the port on which to forward the packet. If an
entry is found and the outgoing port is different from the incoming port, the packet
is forwarded on the outgoing port; if the outgoing port is the same as the incoming
port, the packet is discarded, or filtered. If the destination is not found in the table,
the packet is forwarded to all other ports except the one from which the packet
comes in.

5 Console Program/Network Management
The switch has an RS-232 console port for local management. The following table
and diagram show the RS-232 pin definitions.

After you make the connection, you can a terminal emulation program to start a
management session. The main screen of console will show the following six
items:

To connect a terminal directly to the switch, use a standard RS-232 serial cable.
Connect the male end of the RS-232 cable to the console port and the female end
to a COM port on the computer.
1. System Management
This item is used for system parameters such as IP address, subnet mask,
password, etc.
2. Port Management
This item is used to enable/disable and to show the status of each network port.

3. Reset Device
This item is used to reset the switch.
4. Save Setting
This item saves the current system/port configuration in the flash memory. The
configuration will be available after system reset or power cycle.

Exit and end the management session.
5.1 System Management
You can configure the following items in System Management:
Ø System Location: Enter the switch’s physical location.
Ø System Contact: Enter the name of the person to contact if there is
any problem with the switch.
Ø IP Address: Enter the IP address of the switch.
Ø DNS IP: Enter the IP address of the DNS (Domain Name System)
server.
Ø Domain name: Enter the domain name of the switch.
Ø Trap Manager: A maximum of 3 trap managers is allowed. If you
enable Trap Report Status, then a trap is sent to the trap managers
when any of the following events occurs:

Save Setting
User Login via Telnet
Port links down
This item is used to reset the system to the factory default. Select this item when
your current configuration is not working.
Ø System Name: Enter a name for the switch.
Ø Subnet Mask: Enter the IP subnet mask of the switch.
Ø Default Gateway: Enter the IP address of the default gateway (first
hop router) of the switch.

5.2 Port Management
· Port: Enable/Disable the port.
· Note: Key in a string as a comment of this port.
· Statistics: Show items such as port status, number of transmit and receive
frames, CRC errors and collisions.

Ø Error Rate: Select this item to set the threshold of CRC error rate (1%,
3%,).
After selecting Port Management, you need to specify which port to manage. The
following are the items that can be configured and monitored.
· VLAN ID: Setup the VLAN group. Ports with the same VLAN ID belong to the
same group.
5.3 Remote Management
To manage the switch through SNMP/Web Browser/Telnet, you need to know the
