INSULATION BLANKETS
Insulationblanketsavailabletothegeneralpublicforexternaluseonelectric
waterheatersarenotapprovedforuse on your A. O. Smithwaterheater.
The purpose of an insulation blanket is to reduce the standby heat loss
encountered with storage tank water heaters. Your A. O. Smith water
heatermeetsorexceedstheNational ApplianceEnergyConservationAct
standardswithrespecttoinsulationandstandbylossrequirements,making
aninsulationblanketunnecessary.
WARNING
Shouldyouchoosetoapplyaninsulationblankettothisheater,youshould
follow these instructions (See Figure 1 for identification of components
mentioned below). Failure to follow these instructions can result in fire,
asphyxiation,seriouspersonalinjuryordeath.
•Donot cover the temperature & pressure relief (T&P) valve.
•Do not cover the instruction manual.Keep it on the side of the water
heaterornearbyforfuturereference.
•Do obtain new warning and instruction labels from A.O. Smith for
placementontheblanketdirectlyovertheexistinglabels.
EXTENDED NON-USE PERIODS
WARNING
Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system served by this
heater that has not been used for a long period of time (generally two
weeksormore). HYDROGENGAS IS EXTREMELYFLAMMABLE. To
reducethe risk of injury under these conditions,it is recommended that
the hot water faucet be opened for several minutes at the kitchen sink
beforeusinganyelectricalapplianceconnectedtothehotwatersystem.
Ifhydrogen is present, there will probably be an unusual sound such as
airescapingthroughthepipeasthewaterbeginstoflow. THERESHOULD
BE NO SMOKING OR OPEN FLAME NEAR THE FAUCET AT THE
TIMEIT IS OPEN.

GENERAL
Theinstallationmustconformtotheseinstructions,thelocalcodeauthority
havingjurisdiction, and the requirements of the power company. Inthe
absenceofcoderequirementsfollowNFPA-70(latestedition),TheNational
Electrical Code which may be ordered from: National Fire Protection
Association,1BatterymarchPark, Quincy,MA02269.
WATER HEATER LOCATION
A minimum clearance of 4" must be allowed for access to replaceable
partssuchasthethermostats, drain valve and relief valve.
Adequate clearance for servicing this appliance should be considered
beforeinstallation,suchaschangingtheanodes,etc.
Thewaterheatershould be locatedasclosetoorcentralizedto the water
pipingsystemaspossible. The waterheatershouldbelocatedin anarea
notsubjecttofreezingtemperatures.
CAUTION
THEHEATERSHOULDBELOCATEDINAN AREAWHERELEAKAGE
OF THE TANK OR CONNECTIONS WILL NOT RESULT IN DAMAGE
TOTHE AREAADJACENTTOTHE HEATEROR TOLOWER FLOORS
OFTHESTRUCTURE. Whensuchlocationscannotbeavoided,asuitable
drainpanpiped toanadequatedrainshould beinstalledunderthe heater.
Suchpansshould have a minimum length andwidth of at least 2 inches
greaterthanthediameteroftheheaterandshouldbepipedtoanadequate
drain. Drain pans suitable for these heaters are available from your
distributor or Water Products Company, 5621 W. 115th Street, Alsip, IL
60803.
Under no circumstances is the manufacturer to be held liable for any
waterdamageinconnectionwiththiswaterheater.
HEATERSWITHOUT DRAIN VALVES:
For convenience of service, it is recommended that a drain valve be
installedintheinlet piping, as closetotheheateraspossible,see page 2.

WATER CONNECTIONS
Seepage2fortypicalinstallation. Makesureasuitablepipethreadsealant
isusedtopreventleakage.
TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE
ANEWTEMPERATUREANDPRESSURERELIEFVALVECOMPLYING
WITH THE STANDARD FOR RELIEF VALVES FOR HOT WATER
SUPPLY SYSTEMS, ANSI Z21.22 MUST BE INSTALLED IN THE
HEATER IN THE MARKED OPENING PROVIDED. THE VALVE MUST
BEOFASIZE(INPUTRATING)THATWILLBEADEQUATEFORYOUR
SIZEHEATER.
Check the metal tag on the relief valve and compare it to the heater’s
ratingplate. The pressure rating of the relief valve must not exceed the
workingpressure shown on the ratingplate of the heater andthe hourly
Bturated temperature steam discharge capacityof the relief valve shall
not be less than the input rating of the heater. (Watts x 3.415 = Btu/hr.
rate) NO VALVE IS TO BE PLACED BETWEEN THE RELIEF VALVE
AND TANK. DO NOT PLUG THE RELIEF VALVE.
Thedrainlineconnectedtothisvalvemustnotcontainareducing coupling
orotherrestrictionand should terminate near a suitable draintoprevent
waterdamageduringvalve operation. Discharge lineshallbeinstalledto
allowcomplete drainage of both thevalve and line. DO NOT THREAD,
PLUG OR CAP THE END OF THE DRAIN LINE.
CLOSED WATER SYSTEM
Aclosedsystemwill existifaback-flowpreventer(check valve), pressure
reducing valve, or other similar device is installed in the cold water line
betweenthewaterheaterandthestreetmain(orwell). Excessivepressure
may develop due to the thermal expansion of heated water causing
prematuretankfailure or intermittent relief valveoperation. Thistype of
failureisnotcoveredbythelimitedwarranty. An expansion tank may be
necessaryinthecoldwatersupplytoalleviatethissituation, see page 2.

PIPE INSULATION - (SELECTED MODELS)
1. Removepipeinsulationfromcarton.
2. Fitpipeinsulationovertheincomingcoldwaterlineandthehotwater
line. Makesurethat the insulation is against top coverof the heater.
ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
Theheaterinternalwiringconforms with one of the diagrams on page 4.
The heater data plate identifies this wiring by designation in the space
markedCIRCUIT. Thevoltageandwattage ratingsarealsoshownon the
plate.
REMOVINGPANELS FROM TABLE TOP MODELS
Thedrainvalve,electricalcomponentsandwiringleadsaresituatedbehind
thefrontpanel. To remove:

1. Turn offtheheaterelectricalsupply.
2. Removescrewatbottom of front panel and using the finger catch at
thebottom,pullpaneloutward.
3. Lowerfrontpaneltocleartoppanelandremove.
4. Fold aside the insulation to uncover the components behind their
electricalbarriers.
5. Remove top panel by removing screw and hook under front edge.
Slidepaneltowardfrontofheater.

CAUTION
NEVER OPERATE THE HEATER WITH THE COLD WATER INLET
VALVE CLOSED OR WITHOUT FILLING WITH WATER PER THE
FILLINGINSTRUCTIONS. FAILURETODOSOWILL CAUSEDAMAGE
ANDCAN VOID ELEMENT WARRANTY.
FILLING
1. Closethewaterheaterdrain valve. (Turnclockwise ).
2. Openanearbyhotwaterfaucetto permit airto escape.
3. Fullyopenthecoldwaterinletvalve,fillingtheheaterandpiping.
4. Closethehotwaterfaucetwhenwaterflows.
5. Turnthe water heater electricalswitch on.
TEMPERATURE REGULATION
DANGER
THE WATER HEATER IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADJUSTABLE
THERMOSTATTO CONTROL WATERTEMPERATURE. HOT WATER
ATTEMPERATURES DESIREDFORAUTOMATICDISHWASHER AND
LAUNDRY USE CAN CAUSE SCALDS RESULTING IN SERIOUS
PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR DEATH. THE TEMPERATURE AT
WHICH INJURY OCCURS VARIES WITH THE PERSON’S AGE AND
TIMEOFEXPOSURE. THESLOWERRESPONSETIMEOFDISABLED
PERSONS INCREASES THE HAZARD TO THEM. NEVER ALLOW
SMALLCHILDRENTOUSEAHOTWATERTAP,ORTODRAWTHEIR
OWNBATHWATER. NEVERLEAVEACHILDORDISABLEDPERSON
UNATTENDED IN A BATHTUBORSHOWER.
It is recommended that lower water temperatures be used to avoid the
risk of scalding. It is further recommended, in all cases, that the water
temperaturethermostats(See Figure 3)besetforthe lowest temperature
which satisfies your hot water needs. This will also provide the most
energyefficientoperation ofthewater heater. Thermostat(s) are factory
setat120°F(49°C) unless specified differentlybystaterequirements.
KEEPINGTHETHERMOSTATSETTING AT120°F WILLREDUCETHE
RISKOFSCALDS.
Figure3shows theapproximatetime-to-burnrelationshipfor normaladult
skin. The thermostats on your water heater have a linear relationship
between degrees of angular rotation and the corresponding change in
temperature. Thus rotating the temperature adjustment indicator 30
angular degrees will result in a 10 degree Fahrenheit change in water
temperature.
TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENT
To change the temperature setting:

1. Turnofftheheaterelectricalsupply.Donotattempttoadjustthermostat
withpoweron.
2. Remove the thermostat access panels and covers from the
thermostats.Donotremovethe plastic personnel protectors covering
thethermostats.
3. Using a flat tip screwdriver, rotate the adjusting knob to the desired
temperaturesetting.
4. Replacethecoversandaccess panels, and turn onheater electrical
supply.

plumberorthelocalplumbingauthority.
A non-adjustable high temperature limit control operates before steam
temperaturesarereached. The highlimitisinthe sameareaastheupper
thermostat and must be reset manually when it operates. BECAUSE
THE HIGH LIMIT OPERATES ONLY WHEN ABNORMALLY HIGH
WATERTEMPERATURES ARE PRESENT,ITISIMPORTANT THATA
QUALIFIEDSERVICEAGENT BECONTACTEDTODETERMINETHE
REASONFOROPERATION BEFORE RESETTING.

MAINTENANCE
Electricwater heater maintenance consists of cleaning the tank bottom
and removing scale from the heating elements. Your dealer should be
contacted for tank and element cleaning. In some instances a hissing
soundmaybe heardasthescalebuilds up. Thisnoiseisnormalalthough
thescaleshouldberemoved.

Periodicallythetemperatureand pressure reliefvalveshouldbechecked
to insure that it is in operating condition. Lift the lever at the top of the
valveseveraltimesuntilthevalveseatsproperlyandoperatesfreely.
RELIEF VALVE
Thetemperature/pressure(T&P)reliefvalve is ratedat210°F(99°C)and
150 psi (1034kPa). This valve is a safety device to protect against
abnormallyhightemperatureandpressures.
Never remove T&P valve from the tank and reinstall in the drain line. If
replacement of the valve is needed, it must be replaced with the
recommendedvalveandinstalledin its original location.
Ifthetemperature/pressurereliefvalvedischargesperiodically,thismay
be due to thermal expansion in a closed water supply system. Contact
the water supplier or local plumbing inspector on how to correct this
situation.
A thermal expansion tank may be needed to allow water to expand.

5621W.115thStreet,Alsip,IL 60803. Inspecttheunitforproperoperation.
Donotignorethewater discharge. Never plug the T&P relief valve.
DANGER
DANGEROFPERSONALINJURYFROMSCALDING. WATERFROM
T&P RELIEF VALVE MAY BE EXTREMELY HOT AND IS NOT
TEMPERED. USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN DISCHARGING
VALVE. REPLACEMENT OF T&P VALVE SHOULD BE DONE BY A
TRAINED PROFESSIONAL OR A LICENSED PLUMBING
CONTRACTOR.
Atleast once a year, the temperature andpressure relief valve must be
checkedtoensurethatitisinoperatingcondition.Lift the lever at the top
ofthe valveseveraltimes untilthevalveseatsproperlyandoperatesfreely.
If water does not flow, valve may be obstructed or corroded. Remove
valveandinspectforcorrosion. Have it replaced with the recommended
valveifnecessary.
Removaland inspection of the valve should be done every three years.
Donottryto repair valve. Doing sowillresultinimproperoperationwhich
mayresultina tank explosion. Inareaswithpoorwaterconditions, it may
benecessaryto remove andinspecttheT&Pvalve moreoftenthanevery
threeyears.
ANODE ROD MAINTENANCE
Theanoderodis used to protectthetankfromcorrosion.Watertanksare
equippedwithananoderod. Thesubmergedrodsacrificesitselftoprotect
the tank. Instead of corroding the tank, water ions attack and eat away
the anode rod. This does not affect the water's taste or color. The rod
must be maintained to keep the tank in operating condition. Failure to
inspectand/orreplacetheanoderodwillresultinvoiding the warranty.
Anodedeteriorationdepends on waterconductivity, notnecessarilywater
condition. It may be necessary to have the anode rod inspected a few
timesduringthefirstyeartoseewhateffectthewaterhas had. Acorroded
orpittedanoderod,inthe first year,indicates high waterconductivityand
should be checked and or replaced more often than an anode rod that
appearstobefairlyclean. Inspectionshouldbe conducted by a qualified
technician.

Replacementpartsmay beorderedthroughdealers,authorized servicers
or distributors. Refer to Yellow Pages for where to call or contact the

no., (see rating plate), quantity and name of part desired. Standard
hardwareitemsshouldbepurchasedlocally.

LEAKAGE CHECKPOINTS
INSTRUCTIONS: USE THIS ILLUSTRATION AS A GUIDE WHEN CHECKING FOR SOURCES OF WATER LEAKAGE.
YOU OR YOUR DEALER MAY BE ABLE TO CORRECT WHAT APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM.
Water leaks at the elements may be due to:
1. Defective element which leaks at termi-
nalsorthru flange. Replaceelement*.
2. Looseelement/gasketleak:
(a) Screw-in type: tighten with 1 1/2"
socket wrench or Part No. 21163 or
23985 wrench. If leak continues, re-
move element*, discard gasket and
cleanthreadareas. Applynon-hard-
eningPermatexNo.2tothreadareas,
installnewgasket andscrewelement
intofittinguntil itseats. Tighten1/2 to
3/4turn with wrench.
(b) Flange type: tighten screws with
wrench. Ifleakcontinuesremoveel-
ement* and discard gasket. Clean
gasketseatingareasand re-installel-
ementwithnew gasket.
NOTE: Part No. 40000-1 scale cleaning
replacement screws available where
threadshavebecomerustedordamaged,
preventingtightening.
Where possible, remove or lift top cover
toexaminethreadsoffittings installedinto
tank for evidence of leakage. Correct fit-
ting leaks as necessary.
Condensationand drippingmay
appear on pipes when cold wa-
ter temperature is low. Pipe fit-
tingmay be leaking.
Water on thesideof the tankmaybe
condensationduetothe panel or in-
sulationnotbeingin place.
Drainvalve leakage couldbefrom the
valveitself. Eithercorrecttheproblem
or replace the valve.* To check for
leakagewherethreadedportionenters
tank,insertQ-tiporsimilar absorbent
material between jacket opening and
valve to swab spud area. Remove
valve* if leak is indicated and repair
withpipejoint compound.

to swab spud area. Remove valve* if
leak is indicated and repair with pipe
jointcompound.
All water which appears at the heater bot-
tom or on the surrounding floor may be
causedbycondensation, looseconnections
or relief valve operation and leakage. Do
notreplacetheheateruntil a full inspection
of all potential leak points is made and cor-
rective steps taken to stop the leak. Leak-
age from other appliances, water lines or
ground seepage should also be suspected
untilproven otherwise.

LIMITED RESIDENTIAL ELECTRIC WARRANTY
THIS WARRANTY IS APPLICABLE TO THE ORIGINAL OWNER ONLY. If
theglass linedtankin thiswaterheater shallproveupon examinationbyA. O.
SmithCorporation (thewarrantor) tohaveleakedduringthewarrantyperiod in
normalresidential use,due tonaturalcorrosionfrompotablewatertherein, the
warrantor will furnish the ORIGINAL OWNER a replacement A. O. Smith
waterheaterofequivalentsizeandcurrentmodel, or a replacement part for
any thermostat which fails in normal use, in accordance with the warranty
terms and conditions specified below. THE A. O. SMITH REPLACEMENT
MODEL OR PART WILL BE WARRANTED FOR ONLY THE UNEXPIRED
PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL WARRANTY. The warranty period will be
determinedbythe original installationdateofthe water heater. PROOF-OF-
PURCHASE AND PROOF-OF-INSTALLATION ARE NECESSARY TO
VALIDATE THIS WARRANTY. This warranty is nottransferableandapplies
tomodelslisted below whichareproducedafter March 1,2000.

CONDITIONS AND EXCEPTIONS
Thiswarranty shallapplyonly whenthewater heaterisinstalledandoperated
inaccordance with 1)all localfirecodes andplumbingcodes, ordinancesand
regulations, 2) the printed instructions provided with it, 3) good industry
practices,and4) proper safety practicessuchas but not limitedtoa properly
sizeddrainpanif installed in anareawhereleakage from connections ofthe
tankwouldresult in damage tothearea adjacent to theheater. Inaddition,a
new temperature and pressure relief valve, certified by the American Gas
Associationmusthave beenproperlyinstalled andpipedto thenearestdrain.
Thiswarrantyshall applyonlywhenthe heateris:
• ownedbythe originalpurchaser;
• usedattemperatures notexceedingthe maximumcalibratedsetting ofits
thermostat;
• usedatwater pressurenotexceeding theworkingpressure shown onthe
heater;
• filledwithpotable water,freeto circulate atalltimes and withthetank free
ofdamagingwater sedimentorscale deposits;
• usedin anon-corrosiveand non-contaminatedatmosphere;
• usedwithfactory approvedanode(s)installed;
• initsoriginal installationlocation;
• intheUnited States, itsterritoriesorpossessions, and Canada;
• sized in accordance with proper sizing techniques for residential water
heaters;
• bearing a rating plate which has not been altered, defaced or removed
exceptasrequired bythewarrantor;
• notusedin a closedsystemwithout a properlysizedandinstalled
thermalexpansion tank;
• firedatthe propervoltage and wattage.
• maintained in accordance with the instructions printed in the manual
includedwiththe heater.
Anyaccidenttothewaterheateroranypart thereof (including freezing, fire,
floods,orlightning), anymisuse,abuse oralterationof it, anyoperationof itin
a modified form, or any attempt to repair tank leaks or parts, will void this
warranty.
SERVICE AND LABOR RESPONSIBILITY
UNDER THIS LIMITED WARRANTY, THE WARRANTOR WILL PROVIDE
ONLY A REPLACEMENT WATER HEATER OR PART THEREOF. THE
OWNER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OTHER COSTS. Such costs may
includebutare not limitedto:
a. Labor chargesforservice, removal,orreinstallation of thewaterheater or
partthereof.
b. Shipping and delivery charges for forwarding the new water heater or
replacement part from the nearest distributor and returning the claimed
defectiveheateror part tosuchdistributor except inthestate ofCalifornia
wheresuchcharges arethemanufacturer’sresponsibility.
c. Allcostnecessaryorincidental for handling and administrative charges,
and for any materials and/or permits required for installation of the
replacementheater orpart.
LIMITATION ON IMPLIED WARRANTIES
Impliedwarranties,including anywarrantyof merchantability imposedonthe
sale of this heater under state law are limited to one year duration for the
heaterorany ofitsparts. Some statesdo not allowlimitations on howlong an
impliedwarrantylasts, sotheabove limitationsmaynot apply toyou.
CLAIM PROCEDURE
Anyclaimunder thiswarrantyshould be initiatedwiththe dealerwhosold the
heater,orwith anyotherdealerhandlingthe warrantor’sproducts. Ifthisisnot

orpartsthereof which aremanufacturedor distributed bythewarrantor.
Dealerreplacements aremadesubject toin-warrantyvalidation bywarrantor.
PROOF-OF-PURCHASE AND PROOF-OF-INSTALLATION DATE ARE
REQUIRED TO SUPPORT WARRANTY CLAIM FROM ORIGINAL
OWNER. THISFORM DOESNOTCONSTITUTE PROOF-OF-PURCHASE
ORPROOF-OF-INSTALLATION.
DISCLAIMERS
NOEXPRESSEDWARRANTYHAS BEENORWILL BEMADEIN BEHALF
OF THE WARRANTOR WITH RESPECT TO THE HEATER OR THE
INSTALLATION, OPERATION, REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE
HEATEROR PARTS. THEWARRANTORSHALLNOT BE RESPONSIBLE
FORWATER DAMAGE,LOSSOFUSE OF THE UNIT, INCONVENIENCE,
LOSS OR DAMAGE TO PERSONAL PROPERTY, OR OTHER
CONSEQUENTIALDAMAGE. THE WARRANTOR SHALLNOTBELIABLE
BY VIRTUE OF THIS WARRANTY OR OTHERWISE FOR DAMAGE TO
ANYPERSONSOR PROPERTY,WHETHERDIRECT OR INDIRECT, AND
WHETHER ARISING IN CONTRACT OR IN TORT.
Somestatesdonotallowthelimitationorexclusionofincidentalorconsequential
damages,sothe abovelimitationor exclusionmaynot applytoyou.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other
rightswhichvary from state tostate.
