Whenseatedinthechair
1. Avoidtheriskofoverbalancingthechairbymakingsurethatyoudonotshiftyourweight
distributiontothepointwherethechairmaybecomeunstableand tipover.Donotreachorlean
overfromthechairasthiswillcausethecentreofgravity toshift.
2. Whennotdrivingthechair, makesurethepowertothewheelchairisturnedOFF asthis will prevent
any unintendedmovementbythechairthatmaybecausedby youorotherswhocomeintocontact
with thejoystickcontroller.Thiswillalsoreducetheriskoftheelectricbrakesbeingreleasedor
unintendedmovement ofthechairthroughelectromagneticinterference,asdescribedbelow.
Accident prevention and yoursafety
Tohelppreventaccidentsarisingthroughunforeseenevents, travellingoverroughorunevenground,
encounteringobstaclesetc,westronglyrecommend thatyouwearaseatbeltwhendrivingyourpower
wheelchair.
Transport inamotorvehicle
Itisnotrecommendedthatusersofwheelchairsbetransportedinmotorvehicleswhileseatedintheir
wheelchair.
Itisimportant thatyourAtigraMidWheelDrivechairiscorrectlysecuredbyanapprovedrestraint system
whenitistransportedinamotorvehicle.Thecontrollershouldbeturnedoffandtheparkbrakes applied.
Failuretodosomayresultinpersonalinjuryorpropertydamage.
Obstaclesand drivinghazards
Youmayencounterobstaclesorhazards whendrivingyourchair. Itis importanttoremainobservantfor
obstaclesorhazardssuchas:
•objectsontheground.
•rampsorslopeswhichyoucross thatmaycausethechairtochangeits lateralorlongitudinal
stability.Donotgoupordowninclinesthathavewater,ice,oilorotherslipperysubstancesonthe
surface
•loose,slipperyorroughsurfaces.
Suchobstaclesorhazards maymakethechairunstableandtipover, whichmaycauseinjurytoyourselfor
others.Planahead;donotdrivethechaironanysurfaceifyouhavedoubtsaboutthesurfaceand whetherit
mayaffectthechairstability oryourabilitytocontrolthewheelchairinasafemanner.
Donotattempttoclimbrampsorslopeswheretheangleis greaterthan10degrees
Drivingoverkerbsorsinglesteps
Thechairwasnotdesignedforclimbingordescendingkerbsorsinglestepsofmorethan50mm (2”).Toclimb
ordescendkerbsorsinglestepsofgreaterheightmaycausethechairtotipoverorforyoutofalloutofthe
chair,possiblyresultingininjurytoyourselfortoothers.Whenyouencounterakerborsinglestep,tryto
avoiditby findingaramporanotherwayaroundit.
Itisstronglyrecommendedthatyouhavesomeoneassistyoubystabilizingthechairwhenclimbingor
descendingakerborsinglestep!
Itisimportant thatanykerborstepisapproachedatright anglesand atslowspeedtoreducetheriskof
makingthechairunstableorlosingcontrolofthedrivingofthechair. Failuretodosomayresultininjuryto
yourselforothers, ordamagetoyourchair!
Stairsand Escalators
Neverusethechairtoclimbordescendasetofstairsoranescalator!Doingsomayresultininjurytoyourself
orothers, ordamagetoyourchair!
Publicroads,highwaysand parkingareas
Showextremecautionwhendrivingyourwheelchaironapublicroad,highwayorparkingarea.
