How Does the SmartOne Work?
The SmartOne Peak Flow & FEV1 Meter is a non-invasive method allowing the monitoring of the Peak Expiratory
Flow (PEF), also called Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (PEFR), which is a person’s maximum speed of expiraon
(breathe out). Forced Expiratory Flow at 1 second (FEV1) is also measured and is the volume of air expelled during
the rst second of the same exhalaon.
The SmartOne Peak Flow & FEV1 Meter is a small, hand-held device used to monitor a person’s ability to breathe
out air. It measures the airow through the bronchi of the lungs and can be used to esmate the degree of
obstrucon in the airways. When there is an episode of obstrucon the air cannot generally be expelled as
forcefully as possible, so your PEF and FEV1 will be lower.
Peak Flow readings are higher when we are well, and lower when the airways are constricted. From changes in
recorded values, we may determine lung funconality, severity of Asthma or other respiratory symptoms and
treatment, and how well our treatment is working.
Measurement of PEF requires some pracse to correctly use a meter and the normal expected value depends on a
paent’s gender, age and height. It is classically reduced in lung disorders such as Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis
or Cysc Fibrosis.
Due to the wide range of Normal values and high degree of variability, peak ow is not the recommended test to
idenfy respiratory disease. However, it can be useful in some circumstances to monitor the severity of lung
health or ecacy of treatment.
It is important to use the same peak ow meter every me to ensure consistency of the readings.
It is generally recommended to take one measurement in the morning and one in the evening, every day, before
inhaling your prescribed medicaon. Also it is advisable to carry out addional measurements whenever you feel
unwell or have a perceived shortness of breath.
The highest peak ow value is the measurement of interest. Repeat your measurement three mes to get the
best possible result for the moment. Take care to have sucient relaxaon me between measurements.
The Normal value (Target value) for PEF varies according to gender, age and height. The chart on Page 10 of this
manual can be used to nd your Normal value. This is calculated for you automacally in Acv8rlives. Enter this
value in your Target PEF when registering for your Free Acv8rlives account.
If in doubt, contact your Doctor or Respiratory Nurse for advice.

11
What Your Measurements Mean
Peak ow values are oen classied into 3 zones of measurement according to the American Lung Associaon:
Green, Amber and Red.
Doctors and health praconers develop self-management plans based on the Green-Amber-Red zones.
The Acv8rlives4 Health+Wellness App or Asthma+me automacally stores the highest or best value to date, with
the Green range being any reading above 80% of your Target, set when you Registered for your Acv8rlives
account. A reading in the Amber range indicates a reading between 60% and 80% of your Target. A reading in the
Red range indicates a reading below 60% your target.
We have calculated your Peak Flow and FEV1 Targets based on informaon you’ve already entered at Registraon.
If you have a dierent target set by your Clinician then enter it manually within the Sengs > Lung Funcon Tar-
gets of the Acv8rlives4 Health+Wellness App or Asthma+me.
Green Zone:80 to 100 percent of the usual or normal peak ow readings indicang that your lungs are clear. A
peak ow reading in the Green zone indicates that the lung funcon management is under good control.
Amber Zone: 50 to 79 percent of the usual or normal peak ow readings indicates cauon. It may mean
respiratory airways are narrowing and addional medicaon may be required.
Red Zone: Less than 50 percent of the usual or normal peak ow readings. Indicates a medical emergency.
Severe airway narrowing may be occurring and immediate acon needs to be taken. This would usually involve
contacng a doctor, respiratory nurse or hospital.
The readings for this female volunteer indicates that her Peak Flow (PEF) and FEV1 on this reading are within the
Amber zones and it may mean that there is narrowing of her airways and needs to seek advice from a medical
professional.
If in doubt as to what your reading means,
contact your Doctor or Respiratory Nurse.

12
Note: Do not tamper or aempt to open the unit in which the electronics are housed, your
warranty will be invalidated. Substances contained within the baery may damage the
environment or human health if handled and so there is a risk to electrical shock or burns.
When disposing of this product and its baeries, ensure that it is correctly disposed of for
special treatment and not as normal household waste.

Adding the Baeries
Your SmartOne Peak Flow & FEV1 Meter uses two AAA 1.5V alkaline baeries, which are supplied. These are non-
rechargeable baeries and no aempt should be made to recharge these.
Open the baery compartment from underneath and insert 2 x AAA baeries in the direcon indicated. Replace
the cover.
There is no DISPLAY to show whether the device is on, but once you connect the Acv8rlives4 Health+Wellness
App and Bluetooth is switched on, the device’s unique Serial Number will appear on the App screen because it is
within Bluetooth range.
Remove the baeries if you are planning to store the device for a long period of me. We hope you use your
device for many years of course, but long periods of storage with the baeries in place may damage the device
and will cause the baeries to discharge.
Replace the set of baeries (2 x 1.5V AAA) in the correct direcon when the baeries are exhausted. No data is
stored on the device in memory, so exchange of baeries will not aect data storage.
Cleaning and Disinfecon
It is recommended that you disinfect the Mouthpiece and Turbine before its rst use and at least once a week
using the following procedures. Never immerse the SmartOne Peak Flow & FEV1 Meter’s main unit in water or
disinfecng soluon.
Disconnect the Mouthpiece and Turbine from the main device by twisng it counterclockwise and simply pulling
it out.
Soak the Turbine and Mouthpiece in a cold detergent or disinfecon soluon and shake it to remove any
impuries inside it. Leave it to soak for the length of me suggested by the cleaning or disinfecon soluon
manufacturers.
Rinse both the Turbine and Mouthpiece by dipping it in clean cold water. Drain the Turbine and Mouthpiece and
shake it vigorously. Leave it to dry by laying it with the sha vercal on a clean piece of paper towel. Reassemble
the Mouthpiece onto the Turbine and lock into posion by turning the Turbine in a clockwise direcon and as
indicated on the Main Unit.
WARNING: Do not immerse the Turbine or Mouthpiece in BOILING WATER, ALCOHOL or OILY CLEANING
SOLUTIONS. Never try to clean the Turbine under a DIRECT JET of WATER or other liquids. Do not use a
JET of HOT AIR from a HAIRDRYER or similar to dry the Turbine or Mouthpiece as this will cause damage to
your device.
