About This Guide
This Guide provides basic information for you to install the
Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA controller in your computer.
It also provides the information necessary for you to get a fresh
operating system running with a bootable RAID 0 or 1 array, or to
install your drivers in an existing operating system. For more
information, refer to the Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA
Installation and User’s Guide on the installation CD.

Overview of the Installation Process
The section provides an overview of the process of installing,
setting-up, and configuring the controller:

Read and understand this entire document.
2Install and configure the controller and disk drives according to
the instructions in Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
3How you install the driver depends on the needs of your
system:
In a new system...
aBuild the array.
bInstall the controller driver at the beginning of the operating
system installation.
In an existing system...
aInstall the controller driver.
bBuild the array.

About the Documentation
Documentation for your Adaptec RAID controller includes:
■Quick Installation Guide (this book)
■Readme file—Text file located in the root folder of the
installation CD. Contains technical information about device
compatibility, operating system support, and drivers.
■Installation and User’s Guide—PDF file on the installation CD.
Contains detailed procedures for installing the controller and
software, and creating, configuring, and managing arrays.
■Online Help—Adaptec Storage Manager provides Help for
creating and managing RAIDs, including embedded displays.
Booting from the CD with No Operating
System
The Adaptec CD is bootable, which means you can use it to start a
computer that has no operating system and set up an array
(provided your computer is set up to recognize bootable CDs).
Note: Verify that your computer supports bootable CDs by
entering system Setup and checking the settings.
Insert the Adaptec installation CD into a computer with no
operating system to boot from the CD, and follow the options. For
more information on how to create an array, see Creating a RAID
Array on page 8.
Using the Adaptec CD Autorun in
Windows
To use the Autorun executable, autorun.exe, start Windows and
insert the Adaptec installation CD. Your computer automatically
reads the CD if it is set up to do so.
Note: If your computer does not automatically read the CD, you
can prompt it to read the CD by clicking on
autorun.exe from the
root directory.

Storage Management Software Overview
Storage Management Software Overview
Your RAID controller kit includes the following software tools:
■Adaptec Storage Manager—Storage management application
software used to create, configure, and manage arrays.
■Adaptec RAID Configuration (ARC) Utility—Part of the
controller’s built-in BIOS code that contains the following
components:
–Array Configuration Utility (ACU)—Used to create,
configure, and manage arrays.
–SATASelect—Used to verify the hardware configuration of
the controller and drives.
–Disk Utilities—Used to format and verify drives.
For details about any of these storage management tools, refer to
the
Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA Installation and User’s Guide .
The Adaptec 1420SA Controller
The Adaptec 1420SA controller is shown as follows. Note the
position of the Serial ATA interface connectors necessary for
attaching the Serial ATA disk drives.

Installing the Controller and Drives
Caution: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage your
controller. Handle the controller carefully so that you do not
expose it to static charge.
Notes:
■You need at least 2 drives for a RAID 0 or 1.
■All connectors are keyed so that you can insert the cables
in only one direction.
■Do not try to force a cable on to the controller or a drive. If
the connector does not slide on easily, try reversing it.
To install the controller in the system cabinet:
1
If you have a low-profile computer cabinet, replace the original
full-height bracket with the low-profile bracket supplied in the
controller kit.
2Turn off your computer, unplug the power cord, and open the
system cabinet.
3Remove the cover from an available PCI or PCI-X slot that is 2.2
or higher compliant.
Note: You’ll get better performance if you use a 64-bit slot.

Checking Your Controller and Devices
4Install the controller in the PCI or PCI-X slot and secure the
controller bracket to the chassis.
5Install and connect any internal drives using the appropriate
cable.
6Close the computer cabinet and reattach the power cord.
Checking Your Controller and Devices
To check your controller and devices:
1
Turn on your computer.
2When prompted, enter the ARC utility by pressing Ctrl+A.
3If your drives have already been used in another system (even if
not part of an array), select Disk Utilities and format the drive.
Otherwise, skip to the Step 4.
Note: If a drive appears to be missing, power down the
computer and check the connections.
4Select SATASelect to verify the hardware configuration of the
controller and the drives.
Verify that all drives and controllers are shown. If anything
appears to be missing, power down the computer and check the
connections.

Creating a RAID Array
To install an operating system on a drive or an array connected to
your controller, read this section. Otherwise, skip to Installing the
Driver in a New Windows System on page 10 or Installing Red Hat or
SuSE Linux on page 11.

Turn on the computer, then press Ctrl+A when prompted to enter
the ARC utility. You will use ARC to create the RAID array and
logical drive that you will use to install your operating system.
2From the ARC menu, select Array Configuration Utility
(ACU).
3From the ACU menu, select Create Array.
4Select the drives for the new array and press Insert.
Note: If your drives are shown in gray and cannot be used,
they probably need to be initialized. See the
Adaptec Serial
ATA RAID 1420SA Installation and User’s Guide for details.
5Press Enter when both drives for the new array are selected.
The Array Properties menu displays.
6In the Array Properties menu, select an array type and press
Enter.
The available selections are RAID 0 and RAID 1. Each of these
array types requires two drives. (For a description of these array
types, see the
Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1420SA Installation and
User’s Guide
.)
Note: Once the array is created and its properties are
assigned, you cannot change the array properties using
the ACU. Instead, use Adaptec Storage Manager.
7Optional—Type in a label for the array and press Enter.
8RAID 0 only—Select the desired stripe size. Available stripe
sizes are 16, 32, and 64 KB (default).
Note: Adaptec recommends that you do not change the
default.

Creating the Driver Disk
9Select between the different creation methods for RAID 0 or
RAID 1. (For more details about the creation methods, see the
Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1420SA Installation and User’s Guide .)
RAID 0—Select No Init (default), or Migrate
RAID 1—Select Build (default), Clear, or Quick Init
Caution: Do not interrupt the creation of a RAID 0 using the
Migrate option. If you do, there is no way to restart, and
no way to recover the data that was on the source drive.
10 When the array is finished building, continue the driver
installation for your operating system:
–Windows—Step 4 on page -10
–RedHatLinux—Step 4 on page -11
–SuSELinux—Step 4 on page -12.
Creating the Driver Disk
Before you install your driver, you will need to create a driver disk.
To create the driver disk:
1
Set your system BIOS so that your computer boots from the CD drive.
2Insert the Adaptec CD and turn on the computer.
3Follow instructions and respond to prompts as necessary to get
to the Adaptec Start Menu.
4Click Create Driver Disk, then select the appropriate operating
system.
5If you selected Linux, you need to also select the architecture, one
of the following:
–i586—For Pentium I or II computers
–i686—For Pentium III, IV, or AMD K-6 computers
–Athlon—AMD Athlon computers
–Athlon & Intel_x86_64—AMD Opteron or AMD64 and Intel
EM64T computers

6 When prompted, insert a floppy disk, then click OK .
The computer creates the driver disk.
7When prompted, remove and label the driver disk and click
OK.
Installing the Driver in a New Windows
System
To install the driver while also installing the Windows operating
system:
1
Install and configure the controller and disk drives as described in
Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
2Create a driver disk as shown on page 1-9. When finished,
remove the driver disk.
3If creating an array, see Creating a RAID Array on page 8. If
installing a simple volume, skip to Step 4.
4Insert the Windows setup CD and restart the system to begin
the Windows installation.
5Press F6 when prompted to install a third-party driver.
Note: When F6 is active, a prompt appears at the bottom of
the screen. Press F6 immediately—you only have
5 seconds. If you miss your chance, restart this Windows
installation to complete it correctly. Otherwise, Windows
will not recognize your controller.
6Insert the driver disk you created in Step 2 and wait until
prompted to install a driver.
7Press Sto specify that the driver is on the floppy disk; then,
press Enter.
Windows searches the disk for a suitable driver.
8When the Adaptec RAID driver is found, press Enter. Follow
the remaining on-screen instructions to complete your
installation.

Installing the Driver in an Existing
Windows System
To install the driver in an existing operating system:
1
Install and configure the controller and disk drives as described in
Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
2Create a driver disk as shown on page 1-9. When finished,
remove the driver disk.
3Start Windows. Windows launches the Found New Hardware
Wizard, which searches for the controller driver.
4Insert the driver disk you created in Step 2, select the floppy
disk drive as the source, then click Next.
5If necessary, select the appropriate driver for your operating
system.
6Click Next as needed to complete the controller installation.
7Remove the driver disk.
8If creating an array, see Creating a RAID Array on page 8. If
installing a simple volume, your installation is complete. If
prompted, restart the computer.
Installing Red Hat or SuSE Linux
Installing the Red Hat Driver in a New Linux System
To install the driver in a new Red Hat operating system:
1
Install and configure the controller and disk drives as described in
Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
2Create a driver disk as shown on page 1-9. When finished,
remove the driver disk.
3If creating an array, see Creating a RAID Array on page 8. If
installing a simple volume, skip to Step 4.
4Insert the Red Hat CD Disk 1 in the CD drive and restart the
computer.
5When the Red Hat Welcome screen appears, type expertor
linux dd at the boot prompt.
6When prompted, insert the driver disk you created and select
OK.

7Follow the prompts to set up your preferred environment.
8If you intend to install other third-party devices, proceed with
the installation of those devices. Otherwise, select Done.
9Continue with the Linux installation according to the Red Hat
documentation.
Installing the SuSE Driver in a New Linux System
To install the driver in a new SuSE operating system:
1
Install and configure the controller and disk drives as described in
Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
2Create a driver disk as shown on page 1-9. When finished,
remove the driver disk.
3If creating an array, see Creating a RAID Array on page 8. If
installing a simple volume, skip to Step 4.
4Insert the SuSE CD Disk 1 in the CD drive then restart the
computer.
5When the SuSE Installation menu appears, do the following:
–For UL 1.0: press the Alt key to have it prompt for a driver
disk, then select installation option from the Menu, then
press Enter.
–For SLES 9, SuSE 9.x: press the F6 key, select installation
option from the Menu, then press Enter.
6When prompted, insert the driver disk you created in, then
press any key to continue.
7Follow the prompts to set up your preferred environment.
8Continue with the Linux installation according to the SuSE
documentation.
Installing or Updating the Driver in an
Existing Linux System
To install the driver in an existing Red Hat or SuSE Linux System:
1
Insert the driver CD into the CD device and wait for the system to
automount the cd, or manually mount it from a shell by typing:
for Red Hat mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
for SuSE mount /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

2Then type:

rpm -ivh <rpmfile> (for a new install, or)
rpm -Uvh --force <rpmfile> (for an updated install)

5Reboot the system to enable the new/updated driver.
Installing the Netware Driver in a New
NetWare System
Note: For information about installing drivers if you use the
NetWare CD to install your operating system, see your Novell
documentation.
To install the driver in a new Novell NetWare 6.5 operating
system:
1
Install and configure the controller and disk drives as described in
Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
2Use the instructions provided in the NetWare manual to begin
the installation.
3When the No storage device was detected in this system. Load the
appropriate driver (HAM) prompt appears, press Enter, then Esc.
for Red Hat cd /mnt/cdrom
for SuSE cd /media/cdrom
for Red Hat umount /mnt/cdrom
for SuSE umount /media/cdrom

4On the Device Type screen, select Storage adapters, then press
Enter.
5If the list contains the HostRAID SATA driver (AAR81XX.HAM),
select the driver, then press the Delete key to delete it.
6Press the Insert key twice to Add an unlisted driver.
7Insert the support diskette for Novell NetWare.
8Press F3 to specify a path then type a:\ (where ais the diskette
drive letter), then press Enter.
Note: The driver and support files will be copied to the system
volume: AAR81XX.HAM .
9Verify that the driver name displays in the list of device drivers
that appears in the window (for example, AAR81XX.HAM) then
select Return to Driver Summary then press Enter.
10 Select Continue, then press Enter.
11 Follow the instructions in the NetWare manual to complete the
installation.
Installing or Updating Device Drivers After
Installing NetWare
To update the driver in an existing NetWare 6.5 system see
Updating the Device Drivers. To install the driver in an existing
NetWare system, see Installing the Device Drivers.
Updating the Device Drivers
1Reboot your system to DOS.
2At the prompt, copy the drivers (AAR81XX.DDI, AAR81XX.HAM)
to:
c:\NWSERVER\DRIVERS\XXXX
where XXXX is the name of the driver.
3Restart your system.

Installing the Device Drivers
1 Start the NetWare hdetect utility program. From the system
console, type the following, then press
Enter :
load hdetect
2Insert the HostRAID driver disk for Novell NetWare into the
floppy disk drive.
3If you see the prompt Sys volume not mounted. Load driver
anyway?, select Yes, then press Enter to continue.
4When the next window appears, select, then press Enter.
5The device driver window opens, select Continue, then press
Enter.
6Highlight the driver under Storage adapters, then press Enter.
7Select Modify, then press Enter.
8If the driver AAR81XX exists, select the driver, then press the
Delete key to delete it.
9Press the Insert key twice to add a driver.
10 When the next window opens, press F3 to specify a different
path.
11 In the Specify a directory path field, type a:\ (where ais the
disk drive letter), then press Enter.
12 After the installation program copies all the files, select Return
to driver summary, then press Enter.
13 When the next window opens, select Load to load the driver.
14 After the driver is loaded, press Alt+F10 to exit the hdetect
Utility.

Note: If you want NetWare to load the HostRAID device driver
automatically during startup, you must add the appropriate
LOAD command to the NetWare startup command file (usually
C:\NWSERVER\STARTUP.NCF ). The command has the form:
load [pathname]driverslot=number [options]
For example:
load c:\nwserver\aar81xx.ham slot=1
