About This Guide
This Guide provides basic information for you to install the
Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA controller in your computer.
It also provides the information necessary for you to get a fresh
operating system running with a bootable RAID 0 or 1 array, or to
install your drivers in an existing operating system. For more
information, refer to the Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA
Installation and User’s Guide on the installation CD.

Overview of the Installation Process
The section provides an overview of the process of installing,
setting-up, and configuring the controller:

Read and understand this entire document.
2Install and configure the controller and disk drives according to
the instructions in Installing the Controller and Drives on page 6.
3How you install the driver depends on the needs of your
system:
In a new system...
aBuild the array.
bInstall the controller driver at the beginning of the operating
system installation.
In an existing system...
aInstall the controller driver.
bBuild the array.

About the Documentation
Documentation for your Adaptec RAID controller includes:
■Quick Installation Guide (this book)
■Readme file—Text file located in the root folder of the
installation CD. Contains technical information about device
compatibility, operating system support, and drivers.
■Installation and User’s Guide—PDF file on the installation CD.
Contains detailed procedures for installing the controller and
software, and creating, configuring, and managing arrays.
■Online Help—Adaptec Storage Manager provides Help for
creating and managing RAIDs, including embedded displays.
Booting from the CD with No Operating
System
The Adaptec CD is bootable, which means you can use it to start a
computer that has no operating system and set up an array
(provided your computer is set up to recognize bootable CDs).
Note: Verify that your computer supports bootable CDs by
entering system Setup and checking the settings.
Insert the Adaptec installation CD into a computer with no
operating system to boot from the CD, and follow the options. For
more information on how to create an array, see Creating a RAID
Array on page 8.
Using the Adaptec CD Autorun in
Windows
To use the Autorun executable, autorun.exe, start Windows and
insert the Adaptec installation CD. Your computer automatically
reads the CD if it is set up to do so.
Note: If your computer does not automatically read the CD, you
can prompt it to read the CD by clicking on
autorun.exe from the
root directory.

Storage Management Software Overview
Storage Management Software Overview
Your RAID controller kit includes the following software tools:
■Adaptec Storage Manager—Storage management application
software used to create, configure, and manage arrays.
■Adaptec RAID Configuration (ARC) Utility—Part of the
controller’s built-in BIOS code that contains the following
components:
–Array Configuration Utility (ACU)—Used to create,
configure, and manage arrays.
–SATASelect—Used to verify the hardware configuration of
the controller and drives.
–Disk Utilities—Used to format and verify drives.
For details about any of these storage management tools, refer to
the
Adaptec Serial ATA II RAID 1420SA Installation and User’s Guide .
The Adaptec 1420SA Controller
The Adaptec 1420SA controller is shown as follows. Note the
position of the Serial ATA interface connectors necessary for
attaching the Serial ATA disk drives.

Installing the Controller and Drives
Caution: Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) can damage your
controller. Handle the controller carefully so that you do not
expose it to static charge.
Notes:
■You need at least 2 drives for a RAID 0 or 1.
■All connectors are keyed so that you can insert the cables
in only one direction.
■Do not try to force a cable on to the controller or a drive. If
the connector does not slide on easily, try reversing it.
To install the controller in the system cabinet:

If you have a low-profile computer cabinet, replace the original
full-height bracket with the low-profile bracket supplied in the
controller kit.
2Turn off your computer, unplug the power cord, and open the
system cabinet.
3Remove the cover from an available PCI or PCI-X slot that is 2.2
or higher compliant.
Note: You’ll get better performance if you use a 64-bit slot.

Checking Your Controller and Devices
4Install the controller in the PCI or PCI-X slot and secure the
controller bracket to the chassis.
5Install and connect any internal drives using the appropriate
cable.
6Close the computer cabinet and reattach the power cord.
Checking Your Controller and Devices
To check your controller and devices:
1
Turn on your computer.
2When prompted, enter the ARC utility by pressing Ctrl+A.
3If your drives have already been used in another system (even if
not part of an array), select Disk Utilities and format the drive.
Otherwise, skip to the Step 4.
Note: If a drive appears to be missing, power down the
computer and check the connections.
4Select SATASelect to verify the hardware configuration of the
controller and the drives.
Verify that all drives and controllers are shown. If anything
appears to be missing, power down the computer and check the
connections.

Creating a RAID Array
To install an operating system on a drive or an array connected to
your controller, read this section. Otherwise, skip to Installing the
Driver in a New Windows System on page 10 or Installing Red Hat or
SuSE Linux on page 11.

Turn on the computer, then press Ctrl+A when prompted to enter
the ARC utility. You will use ARC to create the RAID array and
logical drive that you will use to install your operating system.
2From the ARC menu, select Array Configuration Utility
(ACU).
3From the ACU menu, select Create Array.
4Select the drives for the new array and press Insert.
Note: If your drives are shown in gray and cannot be used,
they probably need to be initialized. See the
Adaptec Serial
ATA RAID 1420SA Installation and User’s Guide for details.
5Press Enter when both drives for the new array are selected.
The Array Properties menu displays.
6In the Array Properties menu, select an array type and press
Enter.
The available selections are RAID 0 and RAID 1. Each of these
array types requires two drives. (For a description of these array
types, see the
Adaptec Serial ATA RAID 1420SA Installation and
User’s Guide
.)
Note: Once the array is created and its properties are
assigned, you cannot change the array properties using
the ACU. Instead, use Adaptec Storage Manager.
7Optional—Type in a label for the array and press Enter.
8RAID 0 only—Select the desired stripe size. Available stripe
sizes are 16, 32, and 64 KB (default).
Note: Adaptec recommends that you do not change the
default.
