Quick Installation Guide

WARNING: Installation of your HandPunch will require you to address electrical,
telecommunication and other configurations and arrangements. You are advised to
consult appropriate professional technicians for the installation of your HandPunch.
Any deviation from the installation process contained in this Guide or from the
recommended use of the HandPunch may result in damage to the HandPunch, your
facility or personal injury. A damaged HandPunch may incorrectly transmit, alter or
lose your data. In no event will ADP be responsible for any such damage, injury,
alteration or loss.

2. Decide Where to Put the HandPunch
Make sure there are
no obstructions
within 12 inches of
any side of the
HandPunch.
Helpful Hint: We highly recommend
testing communications between the
HandPunch and computer before
running the cable and installing the
HandPunch to verify that the
computer’s communication ports are
operating correctly.
Pick a spot where all your employees can easily reach the
HandPunch and see its display. (Avoid locations where sunlight
may shine on the scanning plate.)

3. Tape Mounting Guide to the Wall
Tape the wall mounting template to the wall with the top edge
exactly 49 inches above the floor.
Mark the wall behind the points marked with an X.

4. Sheetrock Wall Installation
Using the Phillips screwdriver, screw the auger style
connectors into the wall at the top two marks. Only screw
these until they are flush with the wall.
Drill ¼ inch holes at the marks for the bottom 3 screws.
Insert the molly fasteners in these bottom 3 holes and screw
them until they expand; then completely unscrew these
screws.
You are now ready to fasten the mounting plate to the wall.

5. Power and Communications Setup
You are now ready to begin installation of the electrical
components for use with your HandPunch reader.
You will choose between the following options, depending on
your company’s computer system and your particular business
needs:
• For direct connection between your computer and the
HandPunch reader, see "5a. Power and Communications Jack
Installation (Direct Connect)" on page 10.
• For modem connection, see "5b. Power and Communications
Jack Installation (Modem Connect)" on page 11.*
• For Ethernet connection, see "5c. Power and Communications
Jack Installation (Ethernet Connect)" on page 12.
*Note: Bek Tel multi-line devices are supported by modem
HandPunch readers.

Installation (Direct Connect)
Have a certified electrician install a 110v AC outlet (an outlet
with surge suppression is recommended) within five feet of
where the HandPunch will be mounted.
For Conduit Clamp

Installation (Modem Connect)
Have a certified electrician install a 110v AC outlet (an outlet
with surge suppression is recommended) within five feet of
where the HandPunch will be mounted.
Have a qualified telephone technician connect a dedicated
analog telephone line to the modem jack.

5c. Power and Communications Jack
Installation (Ethernet Connect)
Have a certified electrician install a 110v AC outlet (an outlet
with surge suppression is recommended) within five feet of
where the HandPunch will be mounted.
Install an RJ-45 surface mount jack within five feet of the
HandPunch and have a qualified network cabling technician
connect a 10BaseT port to this jack.

6. Fasten the Mounting Plate to the Wall

7. Mount the HandPunch
Align the pins (located at the bottom of the mounting plate) t

the right of the round receptors (located at the bottom of th

HandPunch unit). Slide to the left to engage.

8. Power and Communications Connection
You are now ready to attach the connection cables to your
HandPunch reader.
Reference the following options, depending on the method of
connection that you have chosen:
• For direct connection, see "8a. Attach the Power and
Communications Cables (Direct Connect)" on page 16.
• For modem connection, see "8b. Attach the Power and
Communications Cables (Modem Connect)" on page 17.
• For Ethernet connection, see "8c. Attach the Power and
Communications Cables (Ethernet Connect)" on page 18.

8a. Attach the Power and Communications
Cables (Direct Connect)
Connect the supplied 100’ green direct connect cable to the 9
pin serial port on your computer*, then plug the cable into the
RS-232 connection on the main board.
Connect the power cord to the barrel connector on the main
board.
After a few seconds, the HandPunch display will show:
