1.1 International Electrical Symbols

tected by double or reinforced insulation.
This symbol on the instrument indicates a
WARNING and that the operator must refer to the
user manual for instructions before operating the
instrument.Inthismanual,thesymbolpreceding
instructions indicates that if the instructions are

1.2 Receiving Your Shipment
Uponreceiving your shipment, make surethat thecon-

CHAPTER 4
OPERATION
4.1 Functions
4.1.1 Data Hold
• The last reading may be held on the display by pressing
the Hold button. The symbol will be displayed.
• Whenthehelddataisnolongerneeded,releasethe
hold function by pressing the Hold button again.
4.1.2 Manual Range Mode (Model 503 only)
• The Model 503 operates in an Auto-ranging mode
(AUTO displayed) by default. Manual-ranging in V
(400V,600V),andA(40A,400A)isavailable.
Press and hold the RANGE button. When the range
changes(decimalpointshift),releasethebutton.
• The symbol is displayed in the manual range mode.
• Press and hold the RANGE button for more than 2 sec-
onds to re-enter the Auto-ranging mode.
4.1.3 (Relative) Zero Mode (Model 503 only)
• Press the ZERO button to enter the Zero mode - the
symbol turns on and the display is set to zero.
• Toviewtheoffsetvalue,presstheZERO button again.
The
annunciator blinks and the memorized offset
value will be displayed. This value will be subtracted from
thenextmeasurement.
• Whenthezeromodeisactivated,themeterautomati-
cally enters the manual range mode (the auto-range
function will be disabled).
• Press and hold down the ZERO button for 2 seconds
toexit.

4.1.4 Disabling Auto Power Off (Model 503 only)
• Start in OFFsetting,thenpressandholdZERO button.
• Power the meter on by selecting a range.
• Thenexttimethemeteristurnedon,theauto-offfunc-
tion will be re-activated.
4.2 AC Current Measurement
NOTE: Remove the test leads before measuring current
• Turntherotaryrangeswitchtothe range.
• Pressthelevertoopenthejaws.
•
Clamp the jaws around the conductor to be measured.
• Ifreadingisunstableandishardtoread,pushthe
HOLD button and read the measurement.
WARNING: If overload " "isdisplayed,
unclamp the meter immediately .

4.5 DC Current Measurement (503 only)
NOTE: Remove the test leads before measuring current
• Turntherotaryrangeswitchtothe range.
• Ifneeded,thedisplaymaybe“zeroed”.Pressthe
ZERO button to zero the reading. Note that the meter
enters the 40A manual range mode when zeroed. If
the measured current is greater than 40A (OL dis-
played),theuserneedstomanuallyselectthe400A
range(seeManualRangeprocedure§4.1.2),and
then zero the probe again.
• Pressthelevertoopenthejaws.
