Introduction
Aether Biomedical
Zeus
Aether Biomedical is a medical robotics company focused on biosi-
gnal processing and bionic limbs for upper limb amputees. Since
our founding, our team has expanded to represent diverse specialties
such as engineering, medicine, design and strategy. We want to shake
up the world of medical technology.
Our products are engineered with precision, designed to exceed
global standards and are fundamentally driven by human need. Our
solutions are conceived and developed in house and scaled externally
with the help of manufacturers and distributors.
Zeus is a multi action bionic limb combining ease of control with an
elegant, robust design. The ngers and thumb provide a rm grasp
to perform everyday tasks with ease. The ngers stall individually,
allowing them to conform to the shape of the object, regardless of
shape or size.
This document will give you important information for the correct use
of and how to look after your prosthesis. Read this document carefully
before tting Zeus.
Zeus is designed for mild to moderate activities. Please avoid use in
situations with heavy loads, vibrations or impacts.

Intended Use
Zeus is recommended for:
»Adults only,
»Both genders,
»Age 18-65 while starting to use the prosthesis - older people
already using bionic limb are in the target group,
»People with circulation or respiratory problems after consulting
their physician.
Zeus is not recommended for:
»Children,
»women during pregnancy, unless they were already wearing a
similar device.
»People with serious mental disorders.
Zeus is an external prosthetic hand intended to be used with other
appropriate upper limb components to form a complete arm
prosthesis, to be tted only by qualied and certied clinicians. It
should be used only by upper limb amputees and by people with
congenital absence of an upper limb (forearm). Zeus is suitable for 3
amputation levels: below-elbow, above-elbow and shoulder disarti-
culation, but the nal decision whether Zeus should be used belongs
to qualied medical personnel. Its functionality covers most hand
movements.
Zeus including the socket (made by CPO) is designed for only one
person during the whole lifetime of the prosthesis.
Fitting of the product to the patient’s upper limb may be exclusively
done by a qualied and certied CPO.

Zeus is developed for everyday use and must not be used for unusual
activities. These unusual activities include, for example, sports with
excessive strain and/or shocks to the wrist unit (pushups, downhill.
mountain biking) or extreme sports (free climbing, paragliding, etc.).
Furthermore, the Zeus should not be used for the operation of motor
vehicles, heavy equipment (e.g. construction machines), industrial
machines or motor-driven equipment.
The prosthesis is intended exclusively for use on one patient. Use of
the product by another person is not approved by the manufacturer.
Fitting a patient with Zeus may only be carried out by a prosthetist
who has been authorized by Aether Biomedical after completion of a
corresponding training course.

Opposed Grips
Power Grip
Active Index Grip
This grip is useful for operat-
ing appliances which
requiretrigger mechanisms
like power tools, sprays and
hairdryers. The hand grasps
the object and conforms to
the shape of the object. The
index nger is controlled
proportionately to operate
the trigger mechanism. The
speed and force applied
by the index nger can be
modulated on the basis of
EMG signal.
In this grip, the thumb is opposed,
while all of the other four ngers close
until they meet the object or receive
a closing signal. The strong grip
provides 152N of force spread over
all four ngers and thumb. This grip
is useful for lifting large objects,
shaking hands or crushing empty
cans. Individual nger stalling means
the grip conforms to the shape of the
object so that you can lift things such
as a wine glass. Thanks to advanced
sensors, the hand optimizes the force
applied to the object.

Precision Open Grip
In this grip, the thumb moves to a mid-point and stops. The index
nger can be controlled proportionately to form a pinch. Middle, ring
and little ngers close fully. This grip can be used for picking up small
objects from a table or holding a pencil.
In this grip, the thumb moves

index nger can be controlled
proportionately to form a pinch.
Middle, ring and little ngers
remain open. This grip can be
used for picking up delicate
objects and reaching between
small gaps.

Tripod Closed Grip
This grip allows you to hold a variety of daily life
objects like a pen, car keys, eggs or jar lids. The
thumb assumes a mid-point position while the
index and middle nger move
proportionately to reach the tip of the
thumb. The ring nger and little
nger remain open.

Non-Opposed Grips
Finger Point
The hand opens to the extent where it provides a slight curvature to
support plates, bowls and books. The rubberized palm provides a at,
non- slippery surface to condently hold objects in this grip
Open Palm
This is a static grip,
where the index nger
remains in a pointing
position and the rest
of the ngers close.
This can be used
for typing, operating
a mobile phone or
pushing switches and
buttons.

Hook Grip
Key Grip
This is a commonly
used grip for picking
up thin at objects,
holding a spoon or
turning a page. The
four ngers assume a
position to provide a at
platform for the thumb.
The thumb can be
controlled proportion-
ately to open and close.
This grip is used for lifting
up heav y objects like brief-
cases, shopping bags and
gym equipment. Because
of the self-locking nature
of Zeus, the ngers have
a static grip capacity of
35kgs, allowing you to lift
heavy objects with ease.
This grip can also be used
to provide support when
getting up from a seated
position.

This grip gives a natural
and lifelike appearance
to the hand. The thumb
is in a non -opposed
position and closed.
The ngers are closed
slightly. This type of
grip is the ideal state
for the hand during
periods of inactivity.
This grip is used to operate a computer mouse. The hand assumes the
position of the mouse. The index nger and the middle nger can be
controlled proportionately to push left and right buttons respectively.

Changing grips
There are 2 different modes to change grip.
»The rst one is „IndividualMode” in which all grips programmed for
the hand are sequenced in default order. To switch between each grips
the user has to make a single co-contraction. This mode is more basic
than the other one because there is no option to undo the previous grip.
Therefore, the user must go through all grips to reach the previous one.
»The second one is „Paring Mode” in which the main po-
int is to choose the 8 most important grips for the user. This
can only done in the software by by qualied and certied
personnel. In this mode, the 8 chosen grips are divided in 2 gro-
ups -the opposed and non-opposed. Each of the groups are
also divided into another 2 groups - primary and secondary.
▶ The primary part means that with one co-contraction signal
a user can have one chosen grip as a default which can change
into another alternate grip with another co-contraction signal.
▶ Default and alternate grips can’t be the same.
▶ To go through secondary grips, a user needs to make a do-
uble co-contraction signal.
▶The secondary part means that with one co-contraction si-
gnal a user can have one chosen grip as a default which can
change into another alternate version of grip with another co-
-contraction signal.
▶The secondary grips can’t be the same as the primary grips.
▶To go back to primary grips, a patient needs once again a
double co-contraction signal.
