Installation
1Water and moisture— Do not use this unit near water,
such as near a bathtub, washbowl, swimming pool, or the
like.
2Heat—Donotusethisunitnearsourcesofheat,including
heatingvents,stoves,orotherappliancesthatgenerateheat.
It also should not be placed in temperatures less than 5°C
(41°F) or greater than 35°C (95°F).
3Mountingsurface—Placetheunitonaflat,evensurface.
4 Ventilation —The unit should be situated withadequate
space around it so that proper heat ventilation is assured.
Allow 10 cm (4 in.) clearance from the rear and the top of
the unit, and 5 cm (2 in.) from each side.
- Donotplacetheunitonabed,rug,orsimilarsurfacethat
may block the ventilation openings.
- Do not install the unit in a bookcase, cabinet, or airtight
rack where ventilation may be impeded.
5Objects and liquid entry — Make sure that objects or
liquids do not get inside the unit through the ventilation
openings.
6Carts and stands — When placed or
mountedonastandorcart,theunitshould
bemovedwithcare.Quickstops,excessive
force, and uneven surfaces may cause the
unit or cart to overturn or fall.
7Condensation — Moisture may form on the CD pickup
lens when:
- The unit is moved from a cold spot to a warm spot
- The heating system has just been turned on
- The unit is used in a very humid room
- The unit is cooled by an air conditioner
Whenthisunithascondensationinside,itmaynotfunction
normally. Should this occur, leave the unit for a few hours,
then try to operate again.
8Wall or ceiling mounting — The unit should not be
mounted on a wall or ceiling, unless specified in the
Operating Instructions.
Electric Power
1 Power sources—Connectthisunitonlytopowersources
specified in the Operating Instructions, and as marked on
the unit.
2Polarization — As a safety feature, some units are
equippedwithpolarizedACpowerplugswhichcanonlybe
inserted one way into a power outlet. If it is difficult or
impossible to insert the AC power plug into an outlet, turn
the plug over and try again. If it still does not easily insert
into the outlet, please call a qualified service technician to
service or replace the outlet. To avoid defeating the safety
feature of the polarized plug, do not force it into a power
outlet.
3AC power cord
- WhendisconnectingtheACpowercord,pullitoutbythe
AC power plug. Do not pull the cord itself.
- Never handle the AC power plug with wet hands, as this
could result in fire or shock.
- Power cords should be firmly secured to avoid being
severely bent, pinched, or walked upon. Pay particular
attention to the cord from the unit to the AC outlet.
- AvoidoverloadingACoutletsandextensioncordsbeyond
their capacity, as this could result in fire or shock.
4 Extension cord —To help preventelectricshock,donot
use a polarized AC power plug with an extension cord,
receptacle,or other outletunless the polarizedplug can be
completelyinsertedtopreventexposureofthebladesofthe
plug.
5When not in use—UnplugtheAC power cord from the
AC outlet if the unit will not be used for several months or
more.Whenthecordispluggedin,asmallamountofcurrent
continuestoflowtotheunit,evenwhenthepoweristurned
off.

Outdoor Antenna
1Power lines — When connecting an outdoor antenna,
make sure it is located away from power lines.
2Outdoor antenna grounding — Be sure the antenna
system is properly grounded to provide protection against
unexpected voltage surges or static electricity build-up.
Article 810 ofthe National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA 70,
provides information on proper grounding of the mast,
supporting structure, and the lead-in wire to the antenna
discharge unit, as well as the size of the grounding unit,
connection to grounding terminals, and requirements for
grounding terminals themselves.

Damage Requiring Service
Have the unit serviced by a qualified service technician if:
- The AC power cord or plug has been damaged
- Foreign objects or liquid have gotten inside the unit
- The unit has been exposed to rain or water
- The unit does not seem to operate normally
- The unit exhibits a marked change in performance
- Theunithasbeendropped,orthecabinethasbeendamaged

Remote control
Detach the battery compartment lid at the rear of the remote
control and insert two R6 (size AA) batteries with correct
polarity.

•Replace the batteries with new ones when the operational
distancebetweentheremotecontrolandmainunitbecomes
shorter.
•Remove the batteries if the unit is not going to be used for
an extended period of time.
•Theremotecontrolmaynotoperateifitisusedunderintense
sunlight or if its line of sight is obstructed.
Connection
PlugintheACpowercordtotheACpoweroutletafterallother
connectionsare made.

Connect the speakers to the main unit.
1 ConnecttherightspeakertotheSPEAKERSRterminals
and the left to the SPEAKERS L terminals. The speaker
cords with the stripes go to the terminals.
2 Connect the speaker light cord from the right speaker
to the SP LIGHT TERMINAL R jack, and the left to the
SP LIGHT TERMINAL L jack.
PREPARATIONS

Connect the supplied antennas.
Connect the FM antenna to the FM 75 Ωterminals and
the AM antenna to the AM LOOP terminals.

ConnecttheACpowercordtoanACpoweroutlet.
When the AC power cord is connected to an AC power
outlet for the first time, DEMO appears on the display.
To deactivate the DEMO, press eco/demo andthe clock
willflashonthedisplay.Forsettingtheclock,seepage9.
Speakers
•Do not short-circuit the and speaker cord leads.
•Do not leave objects generating magnetism or objects
affected by magnetism near the speakers.
Antennas
Keep antennas away from metallic objects, electrical
equipment and cords.
FM antenna: Extend fully in a T-shape. If reception is poor,
connectanoptionaloutdoorantennatotheFM75Ωterminals.
Be sure to connect the shield braid of the antenna to the 2
terminal.

ADJUSTMENTS BEFORE OPERATION
Power
Turning the unit on
Press power 6standby/on (POWER on the remote
control).
Alternatively, press BAND on the remote control.
Turning the unit off
Press power 6standby/on again.
The unit goes into standby.
Volume
Pressvolume (N/M)(VOL (k/i)ontheremote
control).
Adjust from 0 (minimum) to 30 and MAX (maximum).
Tip:
Volume level setting is retained during power-off standby. If
the unit is turned off with the volume set to 22 or higher, it is
automaticallyturneddownto21thenexttimetheunitisturned
on.

If the clock has not been set, a DEMO appears on the display
whenthe unit isturned off.
To deactivate the DEMO
Press eco/demo. The clock flashes. For setting the clock,
see page 9.
ECO mode
Reducespower consumption withthe following operations.
After clock is set, this unit allows you to regulate its power
consumption by displaying nothing on the display while the
poweris off. This is called power economizing mode.
Press eco/demo while the unit is turned off.
Eachpressofthisbuttonchangesthedisplaystatusasfollows:

2Power economizing mode
3Clock display (power economizing mode canceled)
When power economizing mode is activated
When the unit turns off, "ECO MODE" is displayed for 4
seconds, and everything on the display clears.
Only the red indicator on the power button lights to show
that power is being supplied to the unit.
Standby power consumption
When power economizing mode is activated: 1.6 W
When power economizing mode is deactivated: 5.4 W
Changing the display color
Thedisplaycolorcanbechangedto12differentcolors(select
color mode). You can also select 12 different colors for each
function(function color mode).
You can select between select color mode and function color
mode.

Setting the clock

HolddownSHIFTandpressCLOCKontheremote
control.
When the unit is turned off, you can also press aor
enter/color.

Push the dial left (f) or right (g) (press
for gon the remote control) to set the
time.
Each push (press) changes the time in 1-minute steps.
Keeping the dial pushed left (f) or right (g)
(holdingforgdownon theremotecontrol)will
vary the time in 10-minute units.
Ifthereisnooperationfor4seconds,settingiscanceled.

Press aor enter/color.
Thetime display stops flashingand the clock starts from
00 seconds.
To display the time while the power is on
Hold down SHIFT and press CLOCK on the remote control.
The time will be displayed for 4 seconds.
To switch to the 24-hour standard
Display the time and push the dial down (s) (press son
the remote control) within 4 seconds.
Witheachpush(press),theclock alternatesbetween12-and
24-hour standard time.
Tip:
In the 12-hour standard, "AM 12:00" indicates midnight
and "PM 12:00" noon.
If the clock display flashes when the unit is turned
off
There has been a power interruption. Reset the clock.
Graphic equalizer
Selectsa sound equalizationcurve to matchthe music type.

Press sound/timer repeatedly until one of the
three equalization curves or "OFF" appears.

Within 7 seconds, push the dial left (f) or
right (g) to select an equalization curve.
- ROCK: Powerful sound emphasizing treble and bass
- POP: More presence in the vocals and midrange
- JAZZ: Accented lower frequencies for jazz-type music
Alternatively, press EQ repeatedly on the remote control.
To cancel equalization
Repeat the above until "OFF" appears.
T-BASS
Emphasizeslow frequencies fora powerful sound.

Press sound/timer repeatedly until "T-BASS" is
displayed.

Within 7 seconds, push the dial left (f) or
right (g) (press for gon the remote
control) to select an emphasis level (1, 2, 3, or
"OFF").
The"T-BASS"indicatorwillalsolightupwhenT-BASS
is on.
•IfthesoundbecomesdistortedwiththeT-BASSeffect,cancel
the effect.
SOUND ADJUSTMENTS

Playing a CD

Press function (FUNCTION) repeatedly to select
the CD function.

Press OPEN to open the disc compartment.
Place a disc with the label side up. Then close the disc
compartment.

To skip to the beginning of the current/preceding/

To search (playing in fast forward or reverse)
Keep the dial pushed left (f) or right (g) (hold down
forgontheremote control). Release at thedesired
point.
To remove the disc
Press OPEN in stop mode to open the disc compartment.
Then pull out the disc while pressing the center pivot.
To selecta trackwiththe remotecontrol (Directplay)
Press the numbered buttons to select a track.
- To select track 25, press +10, +10 and 5.
- To select track 10, press +10 and 0.
To change the display in play mode
Press display (DISPLAY) during play.

Q SURROUND system
The Q SURROUND system built into this unit uses only two
speakers at the left and right to create an atmosphere that
sounds as if you are surrounded by two front speakers and
tworear speakers.

Press sound/timer repeatedly until
"QSURROUND" flows from right to left.

Within 4 seconds, push the dial left (f) or
right(g)(pressfor gon the remote
control)sothat"ON QSURROUND"flowsfrom
right to left and the "QSURROUND" indicator
lights up on the display.
To cancel the Q SURROUND effect
Repeat the above so that "OFF QSURROUND" flows
fromright toleftand the"QSURROUND"indicatorgoes
off.
Tip:
•The Q SURROUND system does not work in monaural
mode.
•WhentheQSURROUNDsystemison,thesoundmaybe
distorted at higher volumes. If this happens, turn the
volume down.

To repeat a selected set of tracks
First select the tracks with programmed play.
Then selects repeat play. (see "Programmed play" on this
page).
•Ifrandom playmodeisactivatedduring""1"playmode,
the ""1" will be canceled and """ will be selected.
Programmed play
Playsup to 30selected tracks inprogrammed order.

Hold down SHIFT and press PROGRAM on the
remote control in stop mode.
"PRGM" flashes on the display.

Press the numbered buttons on the remote
control to program a track.
-To select the 25th track, press +10, +10 and 5.
-To select the 10th track, press +10 and 0.
The selected track number lights up on the display.

Repeat step 2 to program other tracks.
Thetotalnumberofselectedtracksandtotalplayingtime
will be displayed.

Push the dial up (c) (press con the remote
control) to start play.
•Duringprogrammedplay,youcannotselectatrackwiththe
numbered buttons. "Can’t USE" is displayed when you
try to select a track.
•It is impossible to play a selected set of tracks in random
order. If attempted, "Can’t USE" will be displayed.
•Ifthetotalplayingtimeoftheprogramexceeds99minutes
and59seconds,orifatrackwithatracknumberexceeding
30 is programmed, the playing time is displayed as
"- -:- -".
•You cannot program more than 30 tracks. "FULL" is
displayed.
To check the program
Pushthedialleft(f)orright(g)(pressforg
on the remote control) repeatedly in stop mode. The track
number and program number are displayed in succession.
To clear the program
Pushthedialdown(s)(presssontheremotecontrol)in
stop mode. "PRGM" disappears from the display.
To add tracks to the program
Repeatstep2beforestartingplay.Thetracksareaddedtothe
end of the program.
To change the programmed tracks
Clear the program and repeat all the steps again.
Notes on CDs
•Do not place more than one disc.
•Do not tilt the unit with a disc loaded.
•TheunitmaynotplayCD-R/RWdiscsrecordedonpersonal
computers or certain kinds of CD-R/RW recorders.
•DonotattachadhesivelabeltoeithersideofCD-R/RWdiscs,
as doing so may cause malfunction.
•DonotloadanunrecordedCD-R/RWdisc.Thediscmaybe
damaged.
•Do not try to open the disc compartment during play.
•Do not touch the CD pickup lens. If it is soiled, CDs may
not be played normally.
The display changes in the following order:
1 Track number being played and elapsed playing time
2 Remaining time of play
3 Volume level
•Remainingtimeofplaycannotbedisplayedduringrandom
play or programmed play.
Random/Repeat play
In random play mode the unit plays all the tracks in random
order.In repeatplay mode itplays repeatedlyallthe tracksor
thetrackbeingplayed. Youcanselect randomandrepeatall
playat the sametime.

Hold down SHIFT and press RANDOM on the
remote control so that "RANDOM" is displayed
and the "RANDOM" indicator lights up on the
display.

Push the dial up (c) (press con the remote
control) to start play.
To cancel, hold down SHIFT and press RANDOM so
that the "RANDOM" indicator goes off.
•Direct selection of the tracks with the numbered buttons
cancels random play mode.
Repeat play
HolddownSHIFT andpress REPEAT ontheremotecontrol
repeatedly to select either of the following modes:
- ": Repeat all play
- "1: Repeat 1 play
To cancel,holddownSHIFT andpressREPEATrepeatedly
until """ or ""1" disappears.

RADIO OPERATIONS
Manual tuning

Press function (BAND on the remote control)
repeatedly to select a band.
The unit switches to the radio from any other function
and alternates between FM and AM.

Push the dial left (f) or right (g) (press
for gon the remote control) repeatedly
to tune in a station.
"TUNE" is displayed when a station is tuned in.
"1" lights up for FM stereo reception.
To search for a station automatically (Auto search)
Keep the dial pushed left (f) or right (g) (hold down
for gon the remote control).
The unit searches for a station and stops at reception.
Tostopthesearchmanually,pushthedialleft(f)orright
(g) (press for gon the remote control).
•Auto search may not stop at stations with weak signals.
Preset tuning
Preset up to 32 of your favorite stations and tune them in
directly.
Presetting stations

Tune in the desired station.

Press ato store the station.
The preset number, beginning from "1", appears on the
display.
3
Repeat steps 1 and 2 to preset other stations.
•You cannot store more than 32 preset stations.
"FULL" is displayed.
•Ifpowerisinterruptedformorethanapproximately12hours,
allsettingsstoredinmemoryafterpurchaseneedtobereset.
Tuning in preset stations

Select the band.

Push the dial up (c) (press con the remote
control) repeatedly.
With each push (press), the station with the succeeding
preset number is tuned in.
You can tune in the desired preset station directly by
pressing the numbered buttons on the remote control.
- To select preset number 10, press +10 and 0.
- To select preset number 15, press +10 and 5.
To clear a preset station
1 Tune in the station by preset tuning.
2 Pushthedialdown(s)(pressson the remote control),
then press awithin 4 seconds.
Preset station numbers in the band which are higher than
the cleared number decrease by one.

Adjustments
To switch to monaural FM reception
Hold down SHIFT and press MONO on the remote control
so that "MONO" is displayed. To cancel, press again to
display "STEREO".
Tip:
When FM stereo reception is poor, switching to monaural
reduces noise.
To switch the AM tuning interval

Hold down aand press power on the main unit.
Tip:
When the AM tuning interval is changed, all preset stations

TIMER OPERATIONS
Sleep timer
Turnsoff the unitautomatically after aspecified time.

Press sound/timer repeatedly.
"SLEEP" is displayed.

Push the dial left (f) or right (g) (press
for gon the remote control) repeatedly
to set the sleep timer duration.
Witheachpush(press),thetimer duration changes in 5-
minute steps between 5 to 240 minutes. If there is no
operation for 4 seconds, the current setting is entered
automatically.
The unit turns off after the selected time.
To check the remaining time until the unit turns off
Press sound/timer repeatedly. The remaining time is
displayed for 7 seconds.
To cancel the sleep timer
1 Press sound/timer repeatedly so that "SLEEP" is
displayed.
2 Push the dial left (f) or right (g) (press for
gontheremote control)until"SLEEP oFF"appears
and the "SLEEP" indicator disappears from the display.
Timer playback
Turnsontheunitat a specifiedtimeforthe specified duration.
Makesure the clockis set correctly.

Care and maintenance
Occasionalcareandmaintenanceof the unitandthesoftware
areneeded to optimizethe performance of yourunit.
To clean the cabinet
Use a soft and dry cloth. If the unit surfaces are extremely
dirty, use a soft cloth lightly moistened with mild detergent
solution.Donotusestrongsolventssuchasalcohol,benzene
or thinner.
Care of CDs
When a CD becomes dirty, wipe it from the center out with a
cleaningcloth. After playinga CD, storeit in its case. Do not
keep it in hot or humid places.

There is no sound
•Are the speakers and AC power cord connected properly?
The unit shut off suddenly
•Possiblyashortcircuitinthespeakerterminals.Disconnect
the AC power cord from the AC outlet and reconnect the
speaker cords correctly.
All the display lights turn off when the power is off
•Is ECO mode set to on?
Erroneous display
•Reset the unit (see "Resetting the unit" on the next page).

To play CD, load a disc.
To play the radio, select the band and tune in the desired
station.
ToplayexternalequipmentconnectedtotheAUXINjacks,
setanexternaltimerfortheequipmentsothatitsplayback
begins at the same time.

Press power 6standby/on to turn the unit off.
"5" remains on the display to indicate timer standby
mode (when ECO mode is deactivated).
Attimer-on time, the unit turns on and plays the selected
source. After the specified timer-activated duration, the
unit turns off again.
•Timer playback will not begin unless the unit is turned off
first.
•Connectedequipmentcannotbeturnedonoroffbythebuilt-
in timer of this unit. Use an external timer.
To check the timer setting
1 Press sound/timer repeatedly to display "5PLAY".
2Within7seconds, press enter/color.
Thetimer-ontimeandthesourcenamealongwiththetimer-
activated duration appear alternately on the display.
3 Press enter/color or atwice to confirm the setting.
To change the timer setting
Reset the timer again.
To turn off the timer
1 Press sound/timer repeatedly to display "5PLAY".
2 Within 7 seconds, push the dial left (f) or right
(g) so that "5OFF" is displayed.
3 Within7seconds,press enter/color.
"5" disappears from the display.
Tip:
Your timer setting is retained even if the timer is turned off.
Nexttimethetimeristurnedon,youcanchangeyourprevious
setting, or simply use the same setting again.

Poor radio reception

Resetting the unit
If an unusual condition occurs in the display window, reset
the unit as follows:
1 Press power to turn off the power.
