Intended use of NycoCard™ READER II
The NycoCard™READER II is a small battery-powered
reflectometer, designed to measure the coloured
surfaces on the NycoCard™tests and calculate the
concentration values. The coloured responses are
measured by spectral reflectance in three parts of the
visible spectrum.

When unpacking, examine the contents of the package
for any sign of shipping damage and check if the pack-
age is complete. Report the missing items or shipping
damage to your supplier.
Functional description
The NycoCard™READER II consists of the instrument
box (1), which is the operational and calculating unit,
and the Reader pen (5), which is the measurement
unit. The main components of the instrument box are
the microprocessor, the LCD display (3) and the push
buttons (2) for operation. The key elements of the
Reader pen are the Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) (11),
a photodiode (12) and a light/dark detector (10).
A pen cable (4) connects the box and pen together.
The penholder (8) is located to the right of the display
on the instrument box. In front of this holder, there is
a lid (6), and on the rear side of the lid a white calibra-
tion device (9) is placed.
• Do not interchange Reader pens between
different instruments. The specific calibration
data is stored in the box.
• The pen should be placed in the penholder
when not in use. This protects the optics
from dust and damages.
Basic theory
The Reader pen contains three pairs of LEDs: red,
green and blue. Reflected light from the test sample
is measured, relative to a white sample, by a light-
sensitive photodiode circuit. When a specific test from
the NycoCard™READER II test menu is chosen, the
required LEDs illuminate the sample to be measured.
The sample will reflect some of the light, which will be
detected by the photodiode.
When the pen is placed over the sample and the pen
sleeve is pushed down, the light/dark detector regis-
ters that the environment has changed from light to
dark and the measurement is automatically started.
The sleeve will ensure that the pen is held stable in
a vertical position, and that external light is excluded
from the sample.
Adjusting
This procedure compensates for the contribution of
reflected light from the inside of the pen tip (14) and
slight electrical current leakage in the electronic circuit.
Adjusting is performed when the pen is placed in the
penholder, i.e. in a dark chamber without any sample
present.
• It is important to adjust the instrument each
time the instrument is turned on and when
the pen tip is replaced.
White calibration
The White calibration is essential in reflectance
measurements and adjusts for any differences in
measuring conditions and variation of pen tips. The
white calibration is performed on a special calibration
device, which is stored under the lid, protected from
light and dust.
• The White calibration should be performed
prior to each single, sporadic measurement
and prior to each series of measurements
(max 20 measurements per series).
Installation and environment
Recommended ambient temperature is 18 – 25°C
and humidity must not be condensing. Ensure that the
instrument is protected from dirt and direct sunlight.
• Make sure that the instrument is acclimatised
to room temperature before use.
• Water or any other liquid should not be in
contact with the instrument.
• Please check the surroundings environment
with respect to strong electromagnetic radia-
tion. It might interfere with proper operation.
Your NycoCard™READER II is supplied with 3
rechargeable NiMH batteries (1.2 V) (16). Before
using the new instrument, be sure that the batteries

are sufficiently charged. The connection plug of the
battery charger is inserted into the outlet (17) located
at the rear side of the instrument box.
• Be sure that the batteries are inserted in the
right direction.
• Be certain that the outlet voltage has the
same rating as the charger.
The Reader pen has a modular plug (18). The
NycoCard™READER II is equipped with RS-232 port
for PC-connection (19).
Using the instrument
Functions
The instrument is operated by three push buttons:
Select
ON
To switch on the instrument and to screen
the main menus and the sub menus.
Enter
To enter and activate the menu selected by
the Select button.
Quit
To exit the current menu or function.
The menu
Four main menus are available for selection:
Main menu/Calibrate instructs the instrument to
measure the White Calibration Device.
Main menu/Enter test contains sub menus cor-
responding to each of the NycoCard™tests that are
available.
Main menu/Options contains three sub menus:
- Enter language: To change the language on the
display.
- HbA1c: To select between the measuring units %,
mmol/mol or % & mmol/mol.
- New white: To measure a new value of white when
a message “Error Recalibrate” appears on the
display. The white value will change with ageing,
even if pen tips and calibration devices are replaced.
Main menu/Off followed by “ENTER” will turn off the
instrument. Pressing QUIT and ENTER simultaneously
will also turn off the instrument, regardless of the posi-
tion in the menu.
Operating procedure
The following three steps must be performed before
the result of a NycoCard™test is obtained:
1. Adjusting
Make sure that the pen is placed in
the penholder and turn the Reader
on. The instrument performs auto-
matically “Adjusting”. Allow the
Adjusting procedure to complete
without touching the pen. A single
beep will indicate that the Adjusting
is completed correctly.
• Make sure that the pen tip is free from dust
and scratches.
• Make sure that the penholder is clean.
2. White calibration
Press ENTER to activate the menu
and follow the instructions in the
display. When the message “Place
pen…” is displayed, lift the pen out
of the holder and place it on the
White Calibration Device. Hold the
pen steady until a single beep indi-
cates that the calibration is finished.
• Make sure that the white calibration surface
is free from dust and scratches.
• Remember to close the lid after white
calibration is performed.
3. Measuring the NycoCard™test
The requested NycoCard™test is
chosen from Main menu / Enter test.
While the pen is in the pen holder,
press Enter shortly and follow the
instructions on the display. The
measurement starts when the pen
sleeve is pushed down.
After a few seconds the test result
will be displayed as a concentration
value.
• The NycoCard™test should be placed on the
Reader pad (7) when measuring the result.
Measuring without using the pad may lead to
wrong results.
• Follow general laboratory precautions when
handling blood samples. Be aware that the
pen tip and pen ring will be in contact with
diluted blood/urine.
• Be aware that measurement is in progress
when “Active Wait...” is shown on the display.
Make sure that this message is not displayed
before the sleeve is pushed down on the
sample. Keep the sleeve down and steady
until the result is displayed.

If the instrument is placed on stand-by for about
10 minutes, it will automatically switch-off. When
the instrument is turned on again, the last measured
value will automatically be displayed.
Maintenance
The NycoCard™READER II has three replaceable
accessories, the white calibration device, (9) the pen
tip (14) and the pen ring (13). It is recommended
that these accessories are inspected regularly and
replaced if dirty or damaged.
Replace the pen tip: remove the pen tip, carefully snap
the tip off with your fingers. Replace the new pen tip.
Replace the pen ring: remove the pen ring, hold the
case shield with one hand and carefully wriggle the
ring off with the other hand. Replace the new pen ring.
Make sure it fits correctly.
Replace the calibration device: remove the device by
simultaneously pressing the small handle down and
the opposite side upwards. Place the new calibration
device.
• Be careful not to touch the optics of the
Reader pen.
• Any dirt or damages of the pen tip or
white calibration device may cause wrong
measurements.
Replace the batteries:
Step 1. Use a screwdriver to open the battery lid (15).
Step 2. Remove the old batteries (16).
Step 3. Replace the batteries with three new batteries.
Step 4. Replace the battery lid. New batteries need to
be charged before using the instrument.
• Be sure that the batteries are inserted in the
right direction.
• When disposing the batteries, please follow
recommendations from the supplier.
Disposal of the NycoCard™ READER II
For correct disposal according to the Directive
2012/19/EU (WEEE), please contact your
local NycoCard™READER supplier.

Troubleshooting
The following conditions or problems may occur when using the NycoCard™READER II. If your problem still
exists after corrective action is taken, please contact your local distributor.

The warrant is limited to providing a replacement NycoCard™READER II.
Tampering with the internal components, damage due to operating errors, misuse and overlooking essential
information with respect to warnings and precautions described in this User Manual will invalidate the warranty.
The acknowledgment of claims shall immediately be reported to your local NycoCard™READER II supplier.

Verwendungszweck des NycoCard™
READER II
Der NycoCard™ Reader II ist ein kleines,
batteriebetriebenes Reflektometer zur Auswertung
der NycoCard™ Testkassetten. Hierbei wird
der Farbumschlag der Testkassette mittels
Spektralreflexion in 3 Bereichen des sichtbaren
Farbspektrums gemessen.

Funktionsweise
Der NycoCard™READER II besteht aus dem Geräte-
gehäuse (1), der Betriebs- und Auswertungseinheit
und dem Lesestift (5), als Messeinheit. Die Haupt-
bestandteile des Gerätegehäuses sind der Mikro-
prozessor, das LCD-Display (3) und die Drucktasten
(2) für die Bedienung. Die wichtigsten Bestandteile
des Lesestifts sind die Leuchtdioden (LEDs) (11),
eine Photodiode (12), ein hell/dunkel-Detektor (10)
und der funktionelle Aufbau. Ein Lesestiftkabel (4)
verbindet den Lesestift mit dem Gerätegehäuse. Die
Lesestifthalterung befindet sich rechts vom Display
im Gerätegehäuse. Vor der Halterung befindet sich
eine Klappe (6), auf deren Rückseite die weiße
Kalibrationskassette (9) eingesetzt wird.
• Die Lesestifte dürfen nicht zwischen unter-
schiedlichen Geräten ausgetauscht werden.
Die spezifischen Kalibrierungsdaten werden
im Gerät gespeichert.
• Zum Schutz der Optik vor Staub und
Beschädigungen sollte der Lesestift bei
Nichtgebrauch in die Halterung gestellt
werden.
Grundlegende Information
Der Lesestift enthält drei LED-Paare: rot, grün und
blau. Das von der Testprobe reflektierte Licht wird
durch einen lichtempfindlichen Photodiodenkreislauf
gemessen und zu einer weißen Probe ins Verhältnis
gesetzt. Nach der Auswahl eines bestimmten Tests
aus dem Menü des NycoCard™READER II, wird
die zu messende Probe von dem entsprechenden
LED-Paar beleuchtet. Ein Teil des Lichts wird von der
Probe reflektiert. Dieses reflektierte Licht wird von der
Photodiode erkannt und gemessen.
Wird der Lesestift über der Probe positioniert und
der Schaft fest heruntergedrückt, registriert der hell/
dunkel-Detektor eine Veränderung der Helligkeit von
hell nach dunkel und das Gerät beginnt automatisch
mit der Messung. Der Schaft ermöglicht eine stabile
vertikale Positionierung, so dass kein Licht von außen
eindringen kann.
Justierung
Die Justierung kompensiert den Anteil des reflektierten
Lichts aus dem Inneren der Lesestiftspitze (14) sowie
leichte Stromschwankungen. Sie erfolgt, wenn der
Lesestift in die Halterung gestellt wird, d.h. er befindet
sich in einer dunklen Kammer und es ist keine Probe
vorhanden.
• Diese Justierung muss bei jedem Einschalten
des Gerätes und beim Zurückstellen des Lese-
stiftes in die Halterung durchgeführt werden.
Weißeichung
Die Weißeichung ist für die Durchführung der
Reflektionsmessungen unbedingt erforder-
lich und gleicht mögliche Unterschiede in den
Messbedingungen und durch Veränderungen der
Lesestiftspitze aus. Die Weißeichung wird mit einer
speziellen Kalibrationskassette durchgeführt. Diese
befindet sich unter einer Klappe und ist somit vor Licht
und Staub geschützt.
• Die Weißeichung muss vor jeder einzelnen
Messung und vor jeder Serie von Messungen
(max. 20 Messungen pro Serie) durchgeführt
werden.
Inbetriebnahme und Umgebung
Die empfohlene Raumtemperatur liegt bei
18 - 25°C und einer nicht zur Kondensation
führenden Luftfeuchtigkeit. Das Gerät muss vor
Verunreinigungen und direkter Sonneneinstrahlung
geschützt werden.

• Vor der Verwendung muss sich das Gerät
lange genug im Raum befinden, um an die
Raumtemperatur angepasst zu sein.
• Das Gerät darf nicht mit Wasser und anderen
Flüssigkeiten in Berührung kommen.
• Die Umgebung des Geräts muss auf starke
elektromagnetische Strahlungen überprüft
werden.
Diese könnten den ordnungsgemäßen
Betrieb stören.
Ihr NycoCard™READER II wird mit 3 aufladbaren
NiMH-Batterien (1,2 V) (16) geliefert. Die Batterien
müssen vor der ersten Inbetriebnahme ausreichend
lange aufgeladen werden. Der Verbindungsstecker
des Batterieladegerätes wird in die Buchse (17) auf
der Rückseite des Gerätegehäuses gesteckt.
• Überprüfen Sie die korrekte Position der
Batterien.
• Überprüfen Sie, ob die Spannung des
Steckplatzes der des Batterieladegerätes
entspricht.
Der Lesestift verfügt über einen modularen Stecker
(18). Der NycoCard™READER II ist mit einer RS-232
Schnittstelle für den PC-Anschluss (19) ausgestattet.
Bedienungsanleitung
Funktionen
Für die Bedienung des Gerätes stehen drei
Drucktasten zur Verfügung:
Select
ON
Einschalten des Gerätes und Auswahl der
Haupt- und Untermenüs.
Enter
Öffnen des mit «Select» ausgewählten
Menüs.
Quit
Verlassen des aktuellen Menüs oder der
aktuellen Funktion.
Menü
Es stehen vier Menüs zur Auswahl:
Hauptmenü/Eichung weist das Gerät an, die
Weißeichung durchzuführen.
Hauptmenü/Test beinhaltet die Untermenüs zu allen
verfügbaren NycoCard™-Tests.
Hauptmenü/Optionen beinhaltet drei Untermenüs:
- Sprache auswählen: Ändern der Sprache auf dem
Display.
- HbA1c: Auswahl der Maßeinheit %, mmol/mol oder
% & mmol/mol.
- Neues Weiß: Führt bei der Fehlermeldung
«Fehler, neu kalibrieren» auf dem Display eine
neue Weißeichung durch. Der Weißwert verändert
sich mit der Zeit, auch wenn Lesestiftspitzen und
Kalibrationskassetten ausgetauscht wurden.
Hauptmenü/Ausschalten stellt das Gerät nach
Bestätigung durch die «Enter»-Taste aus. Das
Gerät kann ebenfalls durch gleichzeitiges Drücken
der Tasten QUIT und ENTER, unabhängig von der
Position im Menü, ausgeschaltet werden.
Arbeitsschritte
Die folgenden drei Schritte sind erforderlich, bevor Sie
das Ergebnis eines NycoCard™-Tests erhalten:
1. Justierung
Überprüfen Sie, ob der Lesestift in
der Lesestifthalterung steckt und
schalten Sie den Reader ein. Das
Gerät führt eine automatische
«Justierung» durch. Während der
Justierung darf der Lesestift nicht
berührt werden. Ein einzelner
Piepton zeigt das Ende der
Justierung an.
• Der Lesestift muss frei von Staub und
Kratzern sein.
• Die Lesestifthalterung muss sauber sein.
2. Weißeichung
Zum Öffnen des Menüs ENTER
drücken und den Anweisungen auf
dem Display folgen. Erscheint die
Anweisung «Kalibrieren weiß/Stift
platzieren...» auf dem Display,
nehmen Sie den Lesestift aus der
Halterung und setzten Sie ihn auf
die Kalibrationskassette. Den Lese-
stift so lange ruhig halten, bis ein
einzelner Piepton anzeigt, dass die
Kalibrierung beendet ist.
• Die Oberfläche für die Weißeichung muss frei
von Staub und Kratzern sein.
• Schließen Sie nach Beendigung der
Weißeichung die Klappe.
