ALLEN & HEATH SYS-LINK W31442-SLV2 Kit User manual

WZ31442 SYS-LINK Option Fitting Instructions AP5737 1
These are the instructions for fitting the SYS-LINK Version 2 console expander option to the MixWizard
WZ31442 console. Two consoles, each with SYS-LINK V2 installed, may be linked together using a single
37way cable such that one becomes a channel expander (slave) to the other (master). This links all the
mix buses and the PFL/AFL system. The WZ31442 may be used as a slave or master. The cable is not
supplied but may be ordered separately or sourced elsewhere. Fitting the option requires removal of the
covers to access the internal assemblies, installation of a circuit card assembly and ribbon harnesses,
and some soldering. This work should be carried out by technically competent service personnel.
For information on how to use SYS-LINK please refer to the Applications Note AP5736. For information
on using the WZ31442 console refer to User Guide AP5332. Should further assistance be required,
please contact Allen & Heath Technical Support (details on our web site www.allen-heath.com).
Before Starting
Read these fitting instructions carefully before starting. For trouble free installation and operation heed all
the precautions noted. The console must be fully unplugged and removed from its rack, plinth or other
furniture before carrying out the work.
Normal workshop tools are required. These include Pozi (crosshead) and Torx (starhead) screwdrivers,
and a fine tipped soldering iron. Provide a suitably large, well lit work surface such as a service workshop
bench. To avoid damage to the cosmetics of the console ensure that the work surface is clean and clear
of obstructions. Allow enough time to carry out the work properly and test the results.

IMPORTANT :
This work should be carried out by
competent technical personnel only.
Disconnect the mains power cord
before opening the unit.
Take care not to damage the panels or
internal assemblies during fitting. Prevent
loose parts or dirt from entering the console
as this may cause equipment failure if not
removed.
Fitting Instructions
Step 1: Preparation
Ensure the console is powered off.
Disconnect the mains power lead and all
connected cables.
Ensure the work surface is approximately twice
the depth of the unit.
Remove the console from its rack or other
furniture and place on the work surface.
Step 2: Remove the base
Start by removing the side trims if fitted: four
M4x10 Pozi screws per side.
Turn the console upside down.
Release the two M4x8 flange Pozi head pod
securing screws and rotate the connector pod to
gain access to the three M3x6 Torx rear base
fixing screws.
Remove these screws and rotate the pod again
to remove the four M3x6 Torx underside base
screws.
Carefully lift off the base.

Step 3: Open the connector panel
Remove the two M3x6 Torx screws from each
side of the connector panel. Remove the six
M3x6 Torx screws from the rear of the connector
panel. Carefully tilt the connector panel away
from the console so that it is flat on the work
surface.
Step 4: Remove the clamp bracket
and blanking plate
Remove the five M3 nuts that fix the clamp
bracket to the connector pod chassis. Remove
the clamp bracket. Remove the three M3
blanking plate screws from the rear of the
connector pod. Remove the blanking plate.
Step 5: Fit the SYS-LINK card to the
console
The SYS-LINK circuit card assembly is fixed to
the connector panel using four M4 D-type
connector nuts. These are supplied already
fitted to the card’s sockets. Remove the nuts
and place the card into the connector panel
slots, observing the correct orientation. Secure
the SYS-LINK card by refitting the D-type nuts,
ensuring that they are fully tightened.
Step 6: Connect the SYS-LINK power
The option gets its power from the console +15V
and -15V rails.
Hand solder the SYS-LINK card’s sleeved red
and black wires to the connector card: red to pin
P1 (+15) and black to pin P2 (-15). Check that
the solder joints are of good quality. Cable tie
the wires at point 1 (see diagram).

Step 7: Plug in the IDC harnesses
Taking the six-connector end of harness AL5731,
Plug each connector, starting with the last, into
the RIGHT (CN2), LEFT (CN3), GROUP 4, 3, 2
and 1 (CN6) cards respectively.
Plug harness AL5732 into CN7 on the Left card.
Run both harnesses back through the console,
passing the unc onnected ends through the
second opening of the chassis connector.
Run both harnesses along and over the
connector card as shown above.
Plug harness AL5732 into the left connector on
the SYS-LINK card (marked CN3 – SYS IN). Plug
harness AL5731 into the right connector on the
SYS-LINK card (marked CN4 – SYS OUT).
Loosely cable tie both harnesses at points 2 and
3 as shown above.
Step 8: Refit the clamp bracket
The clamp bracket securing nuts should
be tightened just enough to prevent excessive
movement of the IDC harnesses. Do not
overtighten as this may cause damage to the
harnesses.
Refit the clamp bracket using the five M3 nuts.
The positions of the IDC harnesses may need
adjusting to allow enough slack on either side
when the clamp is tightened.
Step 9: Refit the connector panel
Check your work carefully and ensure that there
is no dirt or debris inside the connector pod.
Ensure that all IDC harnesses are correctly
inserted and positioned.
Carefully refit the connector panel to the console.
Replace the ten M3x6 Torx screws - six at the
rear of the connector panel and two at each side.
Step 10: Refit the base
Check your work and that all harnesses are
correctly inserted and positioned, then carefully
replace the base panel and refit the four
underside base M3x6 Torx screws. Rotate the
connector pod and refit the three rear base fixing
screws. Rotate the pod again and secure it in
place with the two M4x8 flange Pozi screws.
Refit the side trims if required using the four
M4x10 Pozi screws.
Step 11: Test
With all panels refitted, connect to the mains
supply. Power on and check for correct
operation
