Multimedia Polska SA (Poland) choose Allied Telesis for Triple Play.
The Challenges
Multimedia needed to build a network that could be scaled to cover the entire country of Poland.
Additionally, Gigabit Ethernet was required, to provide the necessary throughput for video, high
definition video and data. In order to maintain the network, similar products needed to be
deployed in multiple locations, allowing the approved trial network to be extended across the
country with the minimal amount of effort.The network also had to be compatible with the
existing SDH backbone network that inter-connected all the cities. All this had to be achieved,
whilst also staying within a price limit that allowed Multimedia to return a profit on their
investment.
The Solution
To meet their requirements, Multimedia selected a solution based on multicast routing. Choosing
multicast routing, as opposed to unicast, lessened the total amount of traffic, whilst also simplifying
their equipment requirements. However, this meant that the routers selected had to be able to
use Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) and be capable of routing multicast packets
extremely well under high load conditions, whilst also maintaining excellent latency for the video
traffic.This was especially important for the HD television streams.
After evaluating a number of vendors, Multimedia selected two products from Allied Telesis - the
AT-9924T, a 24 copper port Gigabit Layer 3 switch, and the AT-9924SP switch, an SFP port version
that is compatible with a wide range of optical modules. A local System Integrator,Tritech
performed the installation and commissioning of the equipment.

Triple Play provider in Poland, Multimedia

customers (as of 30 June 2007). Multimedia
offers a service that combines television,
voice and broadband internet in a single
package. Digital TV channels include both
Standard and High Definition quality.

AT-9900 Gigabit Ethernet switches build on technology introduced in the Fast Ethernet AT-8948
switch. AT-9900 Series switches complement the AT-8948 - with the same software release,
feature set and capabilities.The two product series are essential building blocks for a high-
performance network topology.The AT-9900 Series has also evolved from the successful AT-9800
Series, and incorporates the same proven AlliedWare features.
The final solution involves at least one AT-9900 series switch being installed at each Point of
Presence (PoP). Currently, over 70 switches are deployed, which are used to carry 100 standard
television channel streams, and also 4 HD channels, each requiring at least 8Mbps of bandwidth.
Each switch is effectively routing up to 400Mbps of traffic, using Protocol Independent Multicast
(PIM).
Future extensions to the network are planned, as Multimedia extends this service to include more
of its customer base.
