6. WARRANTY
Alpha Technologies warrants its equipment to be free of manufacturing defects in
material and workmanship for a period of 24 months from the date of manufacture.
The liability of Alpha Technologies under this warranty is solely limited to repairing,
replacing, or issuing credit for such equipment (at the discretion of Alpha Technologies),
providedthat:
1. AlphaTechnologies’CustomerServiceDepartmentispromptlynotified,byfacsimile
or telephone, that a failure or defect has occurred.
2. Alpha Technologies’ Customer Service Department issues a Return Materials
Authorization (RMA) number, and designates the service location. The RMA must be
clearly marked on the outside of the shipping container.
3.Purchaserisresponsibleforall in-bound shipping and handlingcharges (COD and
freight collect will not be accepted without prior approval from Alpha Technologies);
AlphaTechnologieswillpayout-boundsurfaceshippingcharges forreturnofrepaired
equipment.
4. A satisfactory examination of the returned unit by Alpha Technologies’ Service
personnel shall disclose that defects have not been caused by misuse, neglect,
improper installation, repair, alteration, or accident, or failure to follow instructions
furnishedbyAlphaTechnologies. IfAlphaTechnologies’Servicepersonneldetermine
that the unit has been damaged due to one of these causes, or if the unit is free of
defects, a handling or repair fee may be assessed prior to returning the unit.

THE UPS SHOULD BE SERVICED BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL
ONLY.
WARNING: This unit contains sealed lead-acid batteries with high
energy and chemical hazards. Carefully read this manual
regarding safe battery handling, maintenance, and dis-
posal. Inspection and replacement should be performed by
qualified personnel only.
Carefully unpack the UPS. Report any shipping damage immediately.
Read the operator’s manual. If you have questions regarding the safe
installation or operation of the UPS, contact Alpha Technologies.
When not in service, charge the UPS batteries at least once every 3
months to ensure optimum performance and battery life.
Install the UPS in a well ventilated area that is free of dust and mois-
ture.
Before installing the UPS, verify the voltage requirements of the
equipment to be protected (load), the AC input to the UPS (line), and
the output voltage of the UPS.
The utility service panel should be equipped with a circuit breaker that
is rated (amperage) for use with the UPS.
Notify fire or emergency personnel that a UPS is installed in the
building by placing a notification or warning label on the electrical
panel.
When connecting a load to the UPS, do not exceed the UPS’s output
rating.
Use proper lifting techniques when handling the UPS or external
battery pack.

The UPS contains more than one live circuit. AC power may be
present at the UPS output, even if AC power is not present at its input.
Do not allow live battery wires to touch the UPS chassis. Shorted
battery wires could cause a fire or explosion.
Inspect the batteries once a year for signs of cracks, leaking or swell-
ing.
Always replace batteries with batteries of identical type and rating.
Never install old or untested batteries.
Do not use uninsulated tools or other conductive materials when
handling batteries or working inside the UPS.
Remove all rings, watches, and other jewellery before servicing
batteries.
Proper disposal of batteries is required. Refer to local regulations for
disposal procedures.

uAdvanced Power Protection Technology
The Alpha Nexsys uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) provides continu-
ous and conditioned AC power to equipment such as computers, telephone
key switches, and other ancillary phone equipment.
uAdvanced Communications
An RS–232 port allows remote supervision of the UPS.
uSmart Charging
Alpha’s smart charge technology ensures the internal batteries are
consistently at peak performance level and automatically selects higher
charge current when an external battery pack is connected.
uTower Installation
The Nexsys UPS can be configured to stand on the floor next to the loads.
The external battery pack can be joined to the UPS.
uWall Mount Installation
The Nexsys UPS mounts easily on a wall adjacent to key systems. The
external battery pack can be wall mounted near the UPS.
uRack Mount Installation
The Nexsys UPS mounts easily in a standard equipment rack to provide
power to other modules in the rack. The external battery pack can also be
rack mounted.
uExpandable Runtime Capabilities
Nexsys external battery packs can be daisy chained to increase backup

Notice
The UPS generates, uses, and can radiate radio frequency energy if not
installed and used in accordance with the instructions contained in the manual.
The UPS has been tested and found to comply with the limits established for a
Class A computing device pursuant to Part 15 of FCC rules and the radio
interference regulations of DOC which are designed to provide reasonable
protection against such interference when this type of equipment is operated in
a commercial environment. If the UPS appears to cause interference to radio or
television reception, which can be determined by switching the unit off and on,
relocate the equipment and/or use an electrical circuit other than that used by
the UPS.

Carefully remove the UPS from its shipping container and inspect the
contents. If items appear to be damaged or missing, contact Alpha
Technologies and the shipping company at once. Most shipping companies
have a short claim period. Make sure that the following items are included:
1. One Nexsys UPS with an AC line cord (only included with North American
units with an IEC inlet).
2. One Operator's manual.
3. Installation kit with:
•Two multi-purpose brackets.
•Four #10 screws for mounting multi-purpose bracket.
•Four screw-mounted rubber feet.
•Four #8 screws for mounting rubber feet.
•Four adhesive backed rubber feet.
•One horizontal layout control panel overlay label.
•One wall mounting template.
•Four #12 tapping screws for wall mounting the UPS.
4. Any other ordered options.
SAVE THE ORIGINAL SHIPPING CONTAINER
If the UPS needs to be returned to the manufacturer for service, package it in
its original shipping container. If the original container is not available, make
sure that the unit is packed with at least three inches of shock-absorbing
material to prevent shipping damage. Do not use popcorn-type material. Alpha
Technologies is not responsible for damage caused by improper packaging of
returned units.

Become familiar with your UPS front and side panels by reviewing the
drawings and illustrations in this manual before starting installation. If you have
questions regarding safe installation or operation, contact Alpha Technologies.

8. Slide the new batteries into the UPS until the batteries are sticking out
about 2 inches (5 cm).
9. Attach the battery cables onto the battery posts of the new batteries.
The red cable should be attached to the positive post and the black
cable to the negative post.
10. Plug in the red/blue battery connector and slide the batteries all the way
in. Reinstall the battery holding bracket and its foam block.
For the Nexsys 900 and 1250:
4. Undo the two screws on the battery holding bracket and remove the
battery holding bracket and the battery holding foam block.
5. Pull out the batteries about 2 inches (5 cm) and disconnect the battery
cable connectors. This disconnects the UPS from internal battery
power.
6. Remove the batteries and the filler foam block from the chassis.
7. Slide the new batteries into the UPS until the batteries are sticking out
about 2 inches (5 cm).
8. Attach the battery cable connectors to the battery tabs of the new
batteries. The red cable should be attached to the positive tab and the
black cable to the negative tab.
9. Slide the batteries all the way in and position the filler foam block.
10. Reinstall the battery holding bracket and its foam block.
For all models:
11. Close the cover and reinstall the five screws.
12. If the UPS has an external battery pack attached, go to Step 15.
13. Press the Mute and % Batt buttons at the same time for 3 seconds to
exit the Hot Swap mode. The On Line LED will come on.
14. Press the % Batt button to check the battery capacity.
15. If the UPS is shut off, turn it on and make sure the unit starts. Unplug
the UPS while it is running and check that there is normal AC power at
the output. The UPS output will fail if the batteries have not been
installed correctly. Do not perform this test when running critical loads.

The Nexsys UPS is easy to use and extremely adaptable. Each Nexsys model is
available in two versions; one for 120 V, 60 Hz applications and the other for
230 V, 50 Hz. The integrated front control and display panel provides many
information management options. The rear panel hosts low profile output
receptacles or optional terminal blocks and a serial interface/alarm connector to
facilitate your most demanding power and communication needs.

and allows the operator to invoke a self-test to confirm proper operation.

1.5 Nexsys UPS Rear Panel
Cooling Fans
This UPS uses cooling fans to ensure maximum cooling protection in all operating
modes.
External Battery Pack (EBP) Connector
This connector accepts a standard plug for an Alpha external battery pack which
extends available backup time. The UPS's smart charge system will automatically
select a higher charge current.
Nameplate Label
The nameplate label displays vital UPS information. Always verify the input
voltage and frequency (e.g., 120 VAC / 60 Hz) before using the UPS.
Communication/Alarm Interface Connector
This communication/alarm RS–232 interface connects to a host computer for
remote monitoring, control, and calibration of the UPS. A special serial cable to
connect the UPS to the computer is available from Alpha Technologies. The part
numbers for the cables are:
•870-540-21 Cable Assembly, Nexsys–PC, RS–232, DE–9M to DB–25F
•870-540-22 Cable Assembly, Nexsys–PC, RS–232, DE–9M to DE–9F
Input/Output Receptacle Plate
The standard Nexsys UPS comes with an input/output receptacle plate with the
following:
AC Input Circuit Breaker
The AC input circuit breaker automatically disconnects the UPS from the
utility line AC power if an overcurrent is applied to the UPS input.
AC Output Receptacles
The equipment to be protected is connected to these UPS output recep-
tacles. The style of the output receptacle varies, depending on country,
frequency, and voltage.
AC Line Cord Connector
An AC line cord is supplied with the UPS for North American customers.
Optional Terminal Block
A terminal block connection box can be used instead of the standard input/output
receptacle plate.

IMPORTANT: Read the safety precautions at the front of this manual before
proceeding.
WARNING: Do not short out the battery terminals. Do not lay tools or parts on
top of the batteries. Do not allow tools or leads to contact the
chassis during assembly or disassembly.
WARNING: The UPS does not need to be shut off to change the batteries, but if
it does not have external batteries attached, and the input power
fails during the change out procedure, the output power of the UPS
will also fail. Do not change the batteries while operating critical
systems. The loads are not protected when changing internal
batteries without an external battery pack attached to the UPS.
Once a year, inspect the batteries for signs of cracks, leaks, or swelling and
always replace them with batteries of identical type and rating. Never install
old or untested batteries. Order batteries from Alpha Technologies.
The batteries are hot swappable. They can be changed without shutting off the
UPS.
Procedure:
For all models:
1. If the UPS has an external battery pack attached and is running
properly, go to Step 3.
2. Switch the UPS into Hot Swap mode by following the procedure in
Section 3.6.9, “Hot Swap Mode.”
3. Undo the five screws that secure the front panel and swing the front
panel open.
For the Nexsys 600:
4. Undo the two screws on the battery holding bracket. Remove the
battery holding bracket and the battery holding foam block.
5. Unplug the red/blue battery connector. This disconnects the UPS from
internal battery power.
6. Pull out the batteries about 2 inches (5 cm) and unscrew the battery
leads from the battery terminals. Wrap the leads in electrical tape to
prevent the leads from shorting.
7. Remove the batteries from the chassis.

5.1 Maintenance
The electronic components used in the UPS require no maintenance. If the
unit fails to perform a specific function, refer to the troubleshooting section.
The guide lists typical symptoms, causes, and solutions to problems, starting
with the most obvious and working systematically through the unit.
By following the guidelines contained in this manual, your UPS will continue to
provide years of trouble-free service.
The maintenance–free batteries used in the UPS will be affected by many
variables including operating temperature, number of discharges over the life
of the battery, charging characteristics, and low voltage cell cutoff. The Nexsys
UPS complies with all factory recommendations for charging and discharging
batteries to ensure optimum performance and the longest possible battery life.
During normal operation, the UPS batteries will tend to increase in capacity
over the first three to twelve months of service. After the first ten to fifteen
battery discharges, the available backup power may increase by 20%. Once
the batteries reach this peak, they will slowly lose capacity and, eventually, will
be unable to provide the required backup power.
To determine the maximum amount of battery run time available, run this test
at least once a year. The length of the test varies from several minutes to
many hours and should not be done while critical loads are running, depending
on the UPS's output. This test discharges the batteries, so backup power may
not be available during a utility power failure.
Procedure:
1. Unplug the AC line cord from the wall receptacle. The front panel On
Battery LED comes on. Record this start time.
2. Record the time when the Low Battery warning LED starts to flash and
subtract the start time. This is the backup time available. The test can
be interrupted here by plugging the AC line cord back into the wall
receptacle.
CAUTION: The next step shuts down the UPS.
3. Allow the UPS to continue to a complete shutdown. Record the time
when the UPS goes into the shutdown state with the LEDs flashing
sequentially. Subtract this time from the Low Battery warning time to
determine the available reserve time.
4. Switch off the UPS and the load(s). Plug the AC line cord back into the
wall receptacle and start the UPS. The batteries will begin recharging.

Site Preparation
Install the UPS in a well-ventilated, dust-free environment. Do not mount it on any
surface unable to fully support its weight.
Install the UPS near the equipment to be protected. The AC line socket and the
output receptacles must be easily accessible in case of an emergency.
Utility Circuit Breaker
The UPS should be installed on a dedicated circuit with a properly sized circuit
breaker to protect the UPS from short circuits or over-currents. Check the UPS
nameplate for the appropriate current rating.
For UPS's equipped with terminal blocks, mark the circuit breaker controlling the
power going to the UPS for emergency disconnection from utility line AC power.
Grounding
Many older facilities may have an electrical system that is incapable of supporting
current grounding requirements. A qualified electrician should inspect the existing
wiring in the building prior to installation to verify proper grounding. Use the
external ground lug on the UPS's rear panel if required.
Standby Generators
The UPS is equipped with a frequency sense circuit, along with a frequency
synchronization circuit, to optimize operation with most standby generators. Prior
to installation, compare the output voltage of the generator to the voltage
requirements of the UPS (see the UPS nameplate label).
By switching the UPS to Generator Mode, the acceptable ranges of input voltage
and frequency can be broadened to accommodate fluctuations inherent to
generator power.
Alpha Technologies recommends using a generator equipped with electronic
speed and voltage control. Generators equipped with mechanical governors can
cause the UPS to run continuously in On Battery mode due to the unstable
frequency of the generator. The generator should produce less than 10%
voltage total harmonic distortion (THD).

4.2.9 Calibration
Calibration allows you to customise the UPS detection and warning
characteristics. Normally, these factory settings do not have to be changed.
CAUTION: Improper calibration parameter values may cause permanent
damage to the UPS. The calibration must be done by well trained
personnel only. Parameter values are relative numbers that only make
sense when viewed through the UPS control system. Contact Alpha
Technologies before making any adjustment.
Slow Detect Hi Lmt
Decreasing this value makes the UPS more sensitive to a slow, high
amplitude line disturbance (sustained overvoltage) by lowering the
overvoltage detection level.
NOTE: The Slow Detect Hi Hys Ref should also be adjusted by the same
amount.
Slow Detect Lo Lmt
Increasing this value makes the UPS more sensitive to a slow, low
amplitude line disturbance (brownout) by raising the brownout detection
level.
NOTE: The Slow Detect Lo Hys Ref should also be adjusted by the same
amount.
Slow Detect Lo Hyst
Increasing this value raises the voltage level where the UPS resumes On
Line mode after a line disturbance has been corrected.
Slow Detect Hi Hyst
Decreasing this value lowers the voltage level where the UPS resumes
On Line mode after an overvoltage condition has been corrected.
Slow Detect Boost High
Increasing this value raises the re-transfer voltage from Boost mode to
On Line mode.
Slow Detect Boost Low
Increasing this value raises the transfer voltage from On Line mode to
Boost mode.
Bat Charge Current
Increasing this value increases the battery charging current.

Volt Amps
The apparent output power of the UPS is calculated by multiplying the
output voltage by the output current. The total UPS output VA may not
equal the sum VA drawn from the connected equipment. This is due to
different power factor rating for each piece of equipment.
Power in Watts
The real output power of the UPS is calculated in Watts. This is equal to the
sum of the real output power for all equipment connected to the UPS.
Power Factor
The ratio of true power (power actually consumed) to apparent power
(simple product of voltage and current) at the input of the UPS expressed
as a decimal (e.g., 0.89).
4.2.7 Battery
Battery Temperature
Displayed in degrees C, Ambient Temperature is measured inside the UPS
in the vicinity of the battery compartment.
Battery Voltage
Voltage indicates the average DC voltage of UPS batteries.
4.2.8 Maintenance
Maintenance allows you to start the test mode and shut down the output.
Battery test options
A self test can be initiated or cancelled by selecting this menu. The test
duration can be set in steps of 0.5 seconds. The default is 120 steps which
equals 60 seconds.
Output Shutdown
The output of the unit can be turned off by sending a command via the RS–
232 port using a computer or terminal. The shutdown delay can be set in
steps of 0.5 seconds. The default is 0. The Test LED flashes when a delay
is set and a UPS Output Shutdown is pending.
Inverter On/Off
Switches the inverter on or off. This option is used when the unit is in the
On Battery mode to prevent a deep battery discharge. The UPS does not
respond to this command when it is not in On Battery mode. Inverter Off
delay can be set in steps of 0.5 seconds. The default is 0. The Test LED
flashes when a delay is set and a UPS I nverter Off state is pending.

2.2.2 External Battery Pack Installation
1. To join an external battery pack (EBP) to the UPS, first install the four rubber
feet to the bottom of the EBP.
2. On the sides where the UPS will join the EBP, remove the two upper and
lower screws on both the UPS and the EBP.
3. Loosen but do not remove the remaining UPS and EBP front panel screws.
4. Slide the braces behind the EBP front panel and chassis at the upper and
lower screw holes where the screws have been removed. Align the slots of
the braces with the screw holes and insert the screws. Adjust the braces so
that they are aligned parallel to the top and bottom chassis surfaces. Tighten
the screws.

4.2.4 Menus and Commands
The RS–232 menus are hierarchical. The top level menu, the Main menu, can
be accessed by pressing Enter which sends a carriage return character. This
menu lists the numbers used for accessing sub-menus and shows the status
of the AC line voltage and pending alarms.
Figure 4.3 shows the opening menu screen which displays menu Option 1
through 4. Current line status, output status, faults, and alarms (if any exist)
are also displayed.

4.2 RS-232 Communication
4.2.1 Introduction
This section describes how to monitor, control, and calibrate the UPS using
RS–232 ASCII commands and how to navigate through the program using the
menus.
Terminal emulation software is used to program the RS–232 serial interface.
Parameters and commands can be accessed through the menus or by typing a
number associated with the desired functions.
4.2.2 Terminal Emulation Set-up
If you are using a terminal emulation package, such as Procomm , to communi-
cate with the UPS, use the following setup:
NOTE: The Back-Space and Delete keys are ignored by the program.
If a command is typed in incorrectly, press Enter and type the
command again.
Microsoft Windows can also be used to set up these parameters:
•Windows 3.x: Click the Terminal icon.
•Windows 95 or Windows 98 path: Start/Programs/Accessories/Communica-

2.3 Wall Mounting
Tools Required:
• Masking tape
• Drill and drill bits for pilot holes
• Mounting hardware kit (included with unit)
Install the UPS on a 1.25 inch (3 cm) thick wood mounting board. Attach the
wood mounting board securely to the wall so that it can safely support the
UPSs weight. Four #12 x 1.25 inch tapping screws are supplied for attaching
the UPS to the wood mounting board.
•The UPS requires 6 inches (15 cm) of clearance on the rear panel side for
ventilation and cable connections, and 7 inches (18 cm) of clearance on the
front panel side for internal battery replacement.
•Install the UPS so its AC input cord can reach a grounded power outlet and
make sure the cords connecting the loads are long enough to reach the
loads.
•The UPS can be mounted with the front panel facing right or left but the
internal batteries are easier to remove if the front panel is facing right.
1. Place the mounting template on the wood mounting board with the top of
the template facing up.
2. Use a level to align the template at the template leveling line. Use masking
tape to temporarily secure the template to the wood mounting board.
3. Drill four pilot holes through the template at the screw locations marked S in
the template.
4. Remove the template.
5. Use the tapping screws to install the lower bracket onto the wood mounting
board. Level the top surface of the mounting bracket and tighten the
screws.

4.1.2 RS-232 Connection
A male DE–9 connector is required when connecting the UPS's RS–232 port
to a PC to run ASCII commands. Figure 4.1, “Pin Assignment DE–9 Female
Connector” shows the wiring configuration.
NOTE: Use only fully shielded cables to make connections to any of the DE–9
connectors.

2.4 Rack Mounting
1. Mount the multipurpose brackets on the sides of the UPS cabinet. The
brackets can be mounted in the centre of the chassis or flush with the front
panel.
NOTE: By changing the orientation of the multipurpose bracket, the UPS
can be mounted in a 19 or 23 inch rack. However, the standard multipur-
pose bracket is not strong enough to be mounted flush with the front panel
in the 23 inch rack configuration. A thicker multipurpose bracket is available
from Alpha Technologies for that purpose.

2. Lift the UPS into position and secure the brackets to the rack.
WARNING: The unit is heavy! Use proper lifting techniques.
3. If an external battery pack (EBP) is being installed, mount it to the rack in
the same way as the UPS module. Connect the EBP to the UPS using the

4.1 Interface Port
The UPS is equipped with a DE–9 female connector for remote communica-
tion. When linked to a PC with a terminal emulation package, the PC can
monitor, control, and calibrate the UPS using RS–232 ASCII commands.
4.1.1 Pin Assignments
•Pin–1: Inverter Shtdwn
The UPS shuts down the inverter (no output voltage) when a RS–232
high level (+7 to +15 volts) signal is applied to Pin–1 for 2.5 seconds.
The UPS responds to this signal only when in On Battery mode.
•Pin–2: Not Connected
•Pin–3: Line Fail, Line Fail Alarm (N.O.), 10 mA maximum
Along with COM (Pin–4), this opto-isolated open collector pin
simulates a relay contact closure whenever the AC line is out of
tolerance (e.g. On Battery mode except in Test mode).
•Pin–4: COM, Common for Pin 3 and 5
This is the common signal for Line Fail and Low Battery alarm signals.
This pin is not internally connected to the logic ground. If required, the
connection to the logic ground should be provided externally.
•Pin–5: Low Batt, Low Battery Alarm (N.O.), 10 mA maximum
This opto-isolated, open-collector pin and COM (Pin–4) simulates a
relay contact closure whenever the battery runtime is low.
•Pin–6: +V, +7V to +12V, 20 mA maximum
This pin provides a positive voltage whenever the UPS is powered up.
The positive voltage can be used to either shutdown the inverter by
placing a switch/relay contact between Pin–6 and Pin–1 (Shutdown) or
to provide a pull up voltage for the Line Fail and Low Batt signals.
•Pin–7: Tx, RS-232 Transmit
•Pin–8: Rx, RS-232 Receive
•Pin–9: GND, logic GND for RS-232 and +V.
